Κατ' αρχήν να ευχηθώ καλό μήνα και καλές διακοπές σε όσους τις έχουν ξεκινήσει. Καλό κουράγιο σε όσους έχουν απομείνει στα μετόπισθεν.
Η σημερινή ανάρτηση έχει να κάνει με μια μεγάλη μορφή της Ελληνικής Ανεξάρτητης (ιδιαίτερα της σκοτεινής) σκηνής, από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 80 μέχρι και σήμερα, και ελπίζουμε και προς το μέλλον. Πρόκειται για έναν καλλιτέχνη που έχει κάνει πράξη το "do it yourself", και για πάνω από 20 χρόνια ασχολείται με τη σκηνή γράφοντας και κυκλοφορώντας μουσική. Επίσης ασχολείται και με άλλες τέχνες και εκφράσεις όπως η ζωγραφική, η λογοτεχνία, η γλυπτική, κ.α. - πολλές φορές επενδύει τη δική του μουσική με δικά του εικαστικά δημιουργήματα. Πρόκειται για τον Στέφανο "Γλαυκωψ" Κουκουλομάτη, ο οποίος ανάμεσα στα πάμπολλα συγκροτήματα, projects και μουσικές πλατφόρμες που έχει δημιουργήσει, έχει στο ενεργητικό του και το σχήμα των Viridi(a)n Green. Εδώ έχουμε τη πρώτη τους δισκογραφική δουλειά η οποία έχει τον ελπιδοφόρο τίτλο "ΗΩ" δηλαδή Αυγή, όπως σημειώνεται και στο ένθετο "Ηώ=Αυγή/Θεά Ηώ/Λυκόφως. Επιγραμματικά μόνο θα πούμε - για να μην ξεστρατίσουμε από την περιγραφή του δίσκου αυτού καθεαυτού - ότι Ηώ λατρευόταν από τους Αρχαίους Έλληνες και σύμφωνα με μία εκδοχή της μυθολογίας ήταν κόρη του Τιτάνα Υπερίωνα και της Τιτανίδας Θείας, αδελφή του Ήλιου και της Σελήνης, αντιπροσώπευε μέρος αυτής της διαδοχής από την Νύχτα στην Ημέρα. Εδώ υποθέτουμε πως ο τίτλος του δίσκου δεν συμβολίζει απλά μια (νέα) αρχή.Ας ξεκινήσουμε την περιήγηση μας στο δίσκο αυτό (mini-LP) και ιδιαιτέρως από το εξώφυλλο. Τα σχέδια ανήκουν στον ίδιο τον Γλαύκωψ και είναι ζωγραφισμένο στο χέρι! Υπάρχουν εκδοχές του δίσκου αυτού με ελαφρώς τροποποιημένο εξώφυλλο. Πρόκειται για σπάνιο δίσκο σήμερα, αφού άλλωστε "κόπηκε" μόλις σε 500 κόπιες. Έχει επίσης άλλη μία ιδιομορφία, πως γράφει ότι κυκλοφόρησε το έτος 4988 (ο Γλαύκωψ σημειώνει στο ένθετο πως η ημερομηνία δεν είναι λάθος....τα σχόλια δικά σας). Το "ΗΩ" αποτελείται από συνολικά 5 κομμάτια ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής που μπορούμε να τα χαρακτηρίσουμε άμπιεντ ποπ και που εξελισσονται με αρκετά πειραματική διάθεση. Από το πρώτο κομμάτι νιώθουμε τον δεμένο ήχο των Viridi(a)n Green χτισμένο γύρω από το μπάσσο και την drum machine με κάποια διακριτικά γεμίσματα synth και ίσως κάποιες κιθάρες. Ο τίτλος του πρώτου κομματιού "The Brightest Star" δένει απόλυτα με τον τίτλο του δίσκου και πράγματι δεν θα μπορούσε το ξεκίνημα να είναι διαφορετικό. Το δεύτερο κομμάτι "Go Action" είναι μουσικά στο ίδιο ύφος με το πρώτο πάλι με το μπάσσο στον πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο. Το τρίτο κομμάτι "The Ice Queen" ακούγεται πιο ρετρό, με νωχελικό ρυθμό, και τη βασική μελωδία παιγμένη από πνευστά και με τα συνθεσάϊζερ να καθορίζουν την ατμόσφαιρα. Τα "In the Book it Says" και "Da-ance Without Cats" είναι σαφώς σε πιο ποπ ρυθμούς, αλλά δεν θα τα χαρακτηρίζαμε εύπεπτα, αναδεικνύουν τη διάθεση του συγκροτήματος για πειραματισμό. Άν κάποιοι από εσάς έχετε ακούσει κάτι από τα μεταγενέστερα άλμπουμ των Viridian Green, εδώ δεν θα τους αναγνωρίσετε πολύ εύκολα. Παρόλαυτά είναι ένα πολύ καλό άλμπουμ, απολαύστε το.

Today's post has to do with a great personality of the Greek Independent scene (especially the dark and obscure one), ever since the 80's up until today and hopefully until tomorrow. It's all about an artist who has practiced "do it yourself" and for more than 20 years he is active compising and releasing music, besides that he is occupied with many other forms of art and expression such as painting, literature, sculpture, etc. - very often he uses more than one expression at the same time (ex: music with his own artwork). We are talking about Stefanos "Glafx" Koukoulomatis who among the various music platforms and bands he gave birth to, he also created Viridian Green, a project that many of you might know already throughout all its reincarnations (Viridin Green, Viridian Green, Viridian Grin). This is the first release of Viridian Green entitled "ΗΩ" (Io) which means Dawn, as inscribed in the insert ""ΗΩ"=Dawn=Goddess Dawn/Twilight. About Godess ΗΩ in the Ancient Greek mythology here's a reference that you might find interesting. In short, and in effort not to forget that we are presenting a record and not teaching mythology, Dawn was worshipped by the Ancient Greeks and according to one dominant version of the myth she was daughter of the Titan Hyperion and Theia who was sister of the Sun and Selene (moon). Dawn had her own part in this succession from Day to Night. We suppose that this title for the record ("ΗΩ") in this form means more than a new good start in the day.
Now about the record itself starting with the cover, as it is Glafx's sample of work and handmade! There are a few altered versions of this cover too. Needless to say that now it is an extinct and rare to find vinyl, since it was released only in 500 copies. Another... peculilarity is the date(s) indicated in the credits, as the music seems to be recorded in the year 4988 (instead of 1988) (you might as well comment on that). "ΗΩ" is consisted of 5 songs of electronic music, more specific in the style of ambient pop, eventually into experimental mood. Even from the first song one can listen to the solid and sound of V.G., built around the determined bass lines and the drum machine accompanied with synth fillings along with light guitars. The title of this first song, "The Brightest Star" is absolutely bonded with the album title. The second one "Go Action" is around the same vein with the bass lines on lead. The 3rd one called "The Ice Queen" sounds like a retro song, of indolent nature, with the help of sax and trumpet and the synths again determining a somewhat darker atmosphere. The last two songs "In the Book it Says" and "Da-ance Without Cats" are in a much more pop-ish style and rhythm, however not "digestible" as they bring the bands attitude towards more experimental treats. If some of you have listened to any of V.G.'s later (industrial) albums, in "ΗΩ" they will not be easily recognizable. Nevertheless it is a pretty good mLP, all you have to do is enjoy!!
