1. Whipping Boy: Whipping Boy 12'' e.p. (Cheree Records-1990) 

Οι Whipping Boy έρχονται από το Δουβλίνο (Ιρλανδία) και πράγματι είναι το συγκρότημα που έκανε μεγάλη εμπορική επιτυχία με το single "We Don't Need Nobody Else" το 1995. Το e.p. που παρουσιάζουμε εδώ κυκλοφόρησε το 1990 και αποτυπώνει τις προφανείς επιρροές από τους Velvet Underground, τους Sonic Youth και τους The Fall. Στο ομώνυμο αυτό e.p. ο ήχος των Whipping Boy προσομοιάζει με ένα κιθαριστικό τείχος στο οποίο ενυπάρχουν διάσπαρτοι ψυχεδελικοί χρωματισμοί, οι οποίοι είναι κάπως πιο ακατέργαστοι σε σχέση με τους The Jesus And Mary Chain που είναι της ίδιας εποχής. ENG: Irish band Whipping Boy come from Dublin and they are the very same group that made a success with the single "We Don't Need Nobody Else" in 1995. Despite that posterior success, the earlier e.p. we present today was released in 1990 and apparently shows how the band was heavily influenced by The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth and The Fall. In the same titled e.p. the music of the W.B. seems like a guitar-wall-of-sound imprinted with scattered psychedelic configurations. Altogether, their sound is somewhat crude related to similar bands of the period such as The Jesus And Mary Chain. Enjoy!

2. Venus In Furs: Love Lies 12'' e.p. (Backs Records-1986)
Οι Venus In Furs είναι λίγο-πολύ γνωστοί στους οπαδούς της new wave/post punk αλλά και στους αναγνώστες των Δέκα Χιλιάδων Ματιών. Είναι το μουσικό όχημα  μέσω του οποίου οι Emery Times και Skot Lucy εξέφρασαν τις εκπληκτικές μουσικές τους ανησυχίες απαριθμώντας συνολικά πέντε ολοκληρωμένα άλμπουμ και αρκετά singles και e.ps. από 1983 έως 1990. Το κομμάτι "Love Lies" προέρχεται από το τρίτο τους LP "Real Moral Fibre" του 1986 και είναι ένα τυπικό δείγμα του ύφους των V.I.F. Για τους μη γνώστες, ο ήχος τους ακόμη και σε γρήγορους ρυθμούς είναι μελαγχολικός και υπνωτικός και σχεδόν εθιστικός. Καλή ακρόαση!
ENG: Venus In Furs are well known among the fans of new wave/post punk and the readers of Ten Thousand Eyes. The main members of the band, Emery Times and Skot Lucy expressed their musical intellect through V.I.F., counting a total of five LP's and several singles and e.ps from 1983 to 1990. "Love Lies" is a typical song from V.I.F. and comes from the third album "Real Moral Fibre" of 1986. For those who aren't familiar with V.I.F., their sound is melancholic and hypnotic, almost addictive even at fast tempos. Enjoy!

3. The Wasp Factory: Bait 12'' e.p. (Midnight Music-1989)
Από τον πολυποίκιλο κατάλογο της βρετανικής Midnight Music έχουμε τους The Wasp Factory και το ιδιότροπο e.p. τους "Bait". Για τους The Wasp Factory δεν έχουμε βρει απολύτως καμία πληροφορία. Εικάζουμε πως είναι Βρετανοί και πως ενδεχομένως πήραν το όνομα τους από την ομότιτλη νουβέλα του -επίσης Βρετανού- Iain Banks που κυκλοφόρησε το 1984. Η μουσική πάντως των Wasp Factory είναι ένα είδος πειραματικής post punk.
ENG: Out of the varied roster of the british label Midnight Music here's The Wasp Factory and their cranky "Bait" e.p. We haven't unearthed any info on them. We guess they are British and most probably got their name after Iain Banks' same titled novel of 1984 release. Now for the band's music style, they experiment with post punk throughout. Enjoy!

The Dispossessed: Sister Mary LP with bonus 7'', 1988 Di Di Music

Από το Hartford του Connecticut των Η.Π.Α. κατάγονται οι Dispossessed, το συγκρότημα της σημερινής μας ανάρτησης. Η δισκογραφία τους περιλαμβάνει το LP "Sister Mary" καθώς και ένα 7ιντσο με τίτλο "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite" τα οποία κυκλοφόρησαν το 1988, το πρώτο από την Dagger Records και το δεύτερο από την Dionysus Records αντίστοιχα. Όμως η ανεξάρτητη ελληνική δισκογραφική Di Di Music επανακυκλοφόρησε το "Sister Mary" σε μια ειδική έκδοση με την προσθήκη ενός 7ιντσου με δύο ακυκλοφόρητα τραγούδια. Σημειώνουμε πως τα δύο επιπλέον κομμάτια αποτελούν ακυκλοφόρητη μουσική και δεν προέρχονται από το "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite". Στο myspace υπάρχουν και άλλα κομμάτια τους που μπορείτε να ακούσετε. Πάντως, οι πληροφορίες στο διαδίκτυο για τους Dispossessed είναι ελάχιστες.
Σε ό,τι αφορά τη μουσική τους, βασικά πρόκειται για post punk με αρκετές ενέσεις από garage psych, ένα αμάλγαμα κιθαριστικό και σκοτεινό μαζί. Ενδεχομένως ανάμεσα στις νότες των καταπληκτικών συνθέσεων να εντοπίσετε τις επιρροές από άλλα μουσικά είδη, πράγμα που προσθέτει αξία στη μουσική των Dispossessed. Ανάμεσα στα εκπληκτικά κομμάτια που πλαισιώνουν το "Sister Mary" ξεχωρίζουν τα "Kingdom, Kingdom", "The World", "Sister Mary", "Half Life", αλλά και η εντυπωσιακή διασκευή στο "Waiting For The Sun" των Doors. Όσο για τα άλλα δύο κομμάτια του 7ιντσου, θα διαπιστώσετε οι ίδιοι πως δεν υστερούν σε τίποτα. Καλή ακρόαση!

ENG: Today's post The Dispossessed come from Hartford, Connecticut U.S. Their entire discography includes an LP, "Sister Mary" and a 7inch single, "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite" both of which were released in 1988 by Dagger Records and Dionysus Records respectively. But it was the greek independent label Di Di Music which re-released "Sister Mary" LP with two additional songs in 7inch format. We note that those two extra songs were not included in "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite" either. You can listen to more unreleased material from The Dispossessed on their myspace fanpage.
Their music is basically post punk with plenty of garage psych buildup, effectively, an amalgam of guitar sound with lots of dark hues and intonations altogether. Nevertheless, there is more to their sound, especially for the trained ear. Among the excellent pieces of "Sister Mary", the most prominent ones are "Kingdom, Kingdom", "The World", "Sister Mary", "Half Life" as well as the impressive cover of The Doors' "Waiting For The Sun". Also, the two extra songs included in the bonus 7inch are quite superb. Enjoy listening to this one!

TVC: TVC LP 1982, Vertigo/PolyGram

Οι TVC είναι από τα παλιότερα new wave σχήματα της εγχώριας σκηνής και είναι κρίμα που δεν κανένα άλμπουμ να ανεβάσουμε νωρίτερα. Πρόσφατα έπεσε στα χέρια μας το πρώτο τους LP και αδράξαμε την ευκαιρία. Όπως μας πληροφορεί το έγκυρο Tribe4mian.wordpress.com αρχικά λεγόντουσαν Video, στη συνέχεια άλλαξαν το όνομα τους σε Tender Violent Century και αργότερα σε Tender Violent Chords. Μπορείτε να διαβάσετε την υπόλοιπη ανάρτηση καθώς και άλλες σχετικά στο μπλόγκ. Το γεγονός πως το  ντεμπούτο άλμπουμ κυκλοφόρησε εν έτει 1982 μέσω της πολυεθνικής Polygram δείχνει πως ήταν ένα πολλά υποσχόμενο σχήμα. Επίσης φαίνεται πως ήταν αρκετά δραστήριοι με πολλές ζωντανές εμφανίσεις στα Αθηναϊκά στέκια της εποχής. Τα μέλη τους ήταν οι Ανδρέας Κουμπαρούλης (κιθάρα/φωνή), Φάνης Φωτόπουλος (μπάσσο), Νίκος Λουίζος (πλήκτρα) και Δημήτρης Δημητράκας (τύμπανα). Ο τελευταίος μάλιστα διατέλεσε μέλος πολλών συγκροτημάτων πριν τους TVC αλλά και μετά. Στη σελίδα του μπορείτε να διαβάσετε περισσότερα για τη δράση του.

Όσον αφορά αυτόν τον πρώτο δίσκο που φέρει το όνομα του γκρούπ, βρίθει συνθέσεων που προσδίδουν τη ζωντάνια και την ενέργεια ενός σχήματος που "πατάει" σε σχετικά νέο έδαφος. Οι ένδεκα πρωτότυπες συνθέσεις δείχνουν την ικανότητα του συγκροτήματος να αφομοιώνει επιρροές και εξωτερικά ερεθίσματα, με όχημα κυρίως την punk και να παράγει δικό του ήχο. Τα τραγούδια του δίσκου είναι μεν σύντομα αλλά πολυδιάστατα και τα περισσότερα από αυτά έχουν άμεσο χαρακτήρα. Γι'αυτό και μας άρεσαν ιδιαίτερα τα "Wash Your Brain", "Brave New World", "Let's Say No" και το "Hard Time Glory" που μοιάζει σαν να ήταν το επόμενο βήμα του ελληνικού new wave. Καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: TVC were one of the earliest bands in Greece's new wave scene of the 1980's and it is too bad we didn't have any of their work to post. Recently we came across their first LP and here's the opportunity. Based on the valid blog of Tribe4mian from which we got most of the info, the band's first name was Video, then they changed their name to Tender Violent Century, eventually finalizing on Tender Violent Chords, hence TVC. Here's the link for the specific post. The fact that TVC's debut LP was released via the international label Polygram reads that they might've been a promising new group. It seems that they had paved their way to success with numerous live acts at live bars of Athens. The members of the group were Andreas Koumbaroulis on guitar and vocals, Fanis Fotopoulos on bass guitar, Nikos Louizos on keyboards and Dimitris Dimitrakas on drums. Dimitrakas has been a member of a number of bands throughout the years. Here's his webpage for more info.

As for the debut and same titled LP of TVC, it is full of songs that show the vigor and energy of a new group that treads on relatively new "ground". There are eleven original songs which prove TVC to be capable of assimilating influences and stimuli. Also, by utilizing punk forms they came to produce their own sound. Most of the songs in the LP are short, yet diverse and direct. This is why we mostly favored "Wash Your Brain", "Brave New World", "Let's Say No" and "Hard Time Glory". The last one shows as if it were the next step of the Greek new wave. Have a good listening to this one!
