Poppi UK: Walk on the Water, 1985, Poppi Disk

Συνεχίζοντας με υλικό από τη δισκοθήκη του The Unspeakable, έχουμε ένα συγκρότημα από τις Κάτω Χώρες, τους άγνωστους Poppi UK. Πιο συγκεκριμένα παρουσιάζουμε τον πρώτο τους δίσκο "Walk On The Water" του 1984 στην δική τους -υποθέτουμε- ανεξάρτητη Poppi Disk. Δυστυχώς δεν καταφέραμε να βρούμε πολλά γι αυτό το συγκρότημα πέραν της δισκογραφίας που παρέχεται στη σελίδα του www.discogs.com, όπου τους χαρακτηρίζει πως παίζουν μουσική new wave, art rock. Με το πρώτο άκουσμα είναι όντως ένα new wave συγκρότημα με πάρα πολλά πειραματικά στοιχεία, όπως επίσης και πολλές δυνατότητες, ακούγονται σαν πεπειραμένοι μουσικοί οι οποίοι αυτοσχεδιάζουν με μεγάλη άνεση, αλλά ταυτόχρονα φτιάχνουν δύσκολη και περίπλοκη μουσική. Οι γραμμές του μπάσσου είναι καταπληκτικές, ευρηματικές - θα τολμούσαμε να πούμε ότι θυμίζουν πάρα πολύ kraut συγκροτήματα αλλά και της new deutche welle σκηνής επίσης, και εμπλουτίζουν τις ήδη πλούσιες σε ήχους και εφέ συνθέσεις. Κάτι ακόμα που σου μένει είναι τα φωνητικά, γεμάτα σαρκασμό και ειρωνική διάθεση, μας θύμισαν κάτι από τους μάστορες του experimental Pere Ubu. Τέλος, οι ίδιοι οι τίτλοι και, ακούγοντας προσεκτικά, οι στίχοι των τραγουδιών έχουν μια απαισιόδοξη χροιά που μοιάζει εν τέλει να καταλύεται από το σαρκασμό που προαναφέραμε. Είναι ένα πολύ ενδιαφέρον άκουσμα και νομίζουμε πως δεν θα έπρεπε να περάσει καθόλου απαρατήρητο ιδιαίτερα από τους λάτρεις του είδους. Εδώ βρίσκεται, απολαύστε το.

Continuing to present the material from The Unspeakable's discotheque, there's a group of musicians from the Netherlands called Poppi UK. Specifically we bring to light their first LP "Walk On The Water" released under their own (we suppose) label Poppi Disk in 1984. Too bad, we couldn't find much about them on the web except their own discography through www.discogs.com, where they are labeled as new wave and art rock band. Once listening to them we realized that they are indeed a new wave group with plenty of experimental elements in their music. They also sound very capable and experienced musicians, as they improvise and create songs quite easily, these songs however look so complicated and difficult to follow, unless one is in the mood. The excellent and intuitive bass lines and turns - we dare to say - bring to mind German kraut rock bands or NDW bands too. All of their compositions are rich in styles and effects as well. In addition, the vocals have that sarcastic tone and irony reminiscent of the masters of experimental new wave music Pere Ubu. Finally, titles and lyrics as well tend to be pessimistic which eventually dissolves into sarcasm. We believe that "Walk on the Water" should be brought up because it is a very interesting LP to listen to, and should never be un-noticed especially by the fans of experimental new wave.
