VA: Crash, A Tribute to J.G. Ballard 1993, Elfish Records

Μπήκε για τα καλά ο Σεπτέμβρης και είπαμε να ανεβάσουμε τις ταχύτητες της μουσικής με κάτι αρκετά ξεχωριστό και επίσης αρκετά ηλεκτρονικό, ρυθμικό και ταυτόχρονα σκοτεινό. Πρόκειται για μια από τις κυκλοφορίες της Elfish Records, οι παραπάνω χαρακτηρισμοί είναι αρκετά ακριβείς αφού προσδιορίζουν ακριβώς τον "ήχο" της. Είναι ένα αφιέρωμα στον cyberpunk συγγραφέα James Graham Ballard, έχει τον κύριο τίτλο "Crash" παρμένο από το ομώνυμο βιβλίο του που γράφτηκε το 1973 και που οι περισσότεροι το γνωρίζουν από την επίσης ομώνυμη κινηματογραφική μεταφορά από τον σκηνοθέτη David Cronenberg. Το αφιέρωμα αυτό με μορφή συλλογής κυκλοφόρησε το 1993 μόνο σε cd και θα μπορούσε να ήταν επιτυχώς το soundtrack για την ταινία που προαναφέραμε. Απαριθμεί 17 συμμετοχές από τον εγχώριο αλλά και παγκόσμιο ηλεκτρονικό/industrial/darkwave μουσικό χώρο. Για μερικά από αυτά (κυρίως τα εγχώρια) γνωρίζουμε πως εδώ συμμετέχουν με ακυκλοφόρητα τραγούδια, δηλαδή αρκετά σπάνιες κυκλοφορίες τους. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, τα ελληνικά group που συμμετέχουν στο ιδιότυπο αφιέρωμα είναι: οι Electroware, Slow Motion, Raw, Coti K., Diva Futura, Aima, Forward Music Quintet και τέλος, οι In Trance 95. Κάποια από αυτά όπως οι Slow Motion και οι Forward Music Quintet είναι από τα πιο παλιά στο χώρο. Βέβαια και οι υπόλποιπες συμμετοχές είναι αξιόλογες. Επιγραμματικά μόνο θα πούμε για τους επίσης παλιούς Pankow (από τα πιο επιδραστικά industrial συγκροτήματα της Ιταλίας), αλλά και για τους Nova State Conspiracy που πρόκειται για project του ήδη γνωστού μας πολυπράγμωνα Alex Novak από την πρόσφατη ανάρτηση για τους The Tempest. Περιττά τα λόγια για τους πρωτοπόρους Clock DVA από το Sheffield της Μεγ. Βρετανίας.

Συνολικά πρόκειται για μια αξιόλογη συλλογή-αφιέρωμα με θέματα κυρίως παρμένα από την cyberpunk θεματολογία. Στους λάτρεις λοιπόν της λογοτεχνίας του φανταστικού, αλλά και της σκοτεινής ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής, αλλά και σε όλους τους αναγνώστες μας ευχόμαστε καλή ακρόαση!!!

ENG: Entered September for good and we thought we could upload some music for elevated heart rate...thus we have something special for you. Something in the electronic area, rhythmical and dark at the same time. This small intro is for one of those excellent Elfish Records Compilations and the previous statement focuses exactly on the sound of Elfish, electronic and dark. This Compilation is a tribute to the master of cyberpunk fiction James Graham Ballard and it is entitled "Crash" just like Ballard's same titled novel of 1973 and the film adaptation by David Cronenberg. This tribute was released only on cd in 1993 and successfully could serve as a soundtrack to the aforementioned film, but unfortunately it is not. Totally 17 groups participate in this compilation mostly from the electronic/industrial/darkwave genres. What we know for sure is that all the songs from the Greek groups (Electroware, Slow Motion, Raw, Coti K., Diva Futura, Aima, Forward Music Quintet, In Trance 95) are previously unreleased. Also, let us mention that Slow Motion, Forward Music Quintet, Pankow, Clock DVA are some of the oldest groups tracing youth back to the early 80's. Let us add one more information, the band called Nova State Conspiracy is a project of Alex Novak whom we have already mentioned in previous posts (The Tempest).

Overall "Crash, A Tribute to J.G. Ballard" is an outstanding compilation tribute filled with cyberpunk themed music, certainly a treat for the fans of Science Fiction and dark electronic music and of course to all our readers. Enjoy!!!

The Band of Holy Joy: Who Snatched the Baby 12'' 1986, Flim Flam

Κλείνοντας το μικρό αφιέρωμα στα 12ιντσα ep θα ασχοληθούμε με τους πολύ αγαπημένους μας Band of Holy Joy και το "Who Snatched the Baby?" που μας έρχεται από το 1986, είναι δηλαδή μία από τις πρώτες τους κυκλοφορίες. Η μουσική των Band of Holy Joy είναι κάπως ασυνήθιστη για το κοινό αυτί καθώς συνδυάζουν folk μαζί με μουσική cabaret και αρκετά συμβατικά new wave στοιχεία καθώς τους αρέσει να πειραματίζονται αρκετά. Οι δε στίχοι τους μοιάζουν μέσα από την απροβλεπτότητά τους λένε απλοϊκές ιστορίες. Τα παραπάνω χαρακτηριστικά δεν βρίσκουν καμία εξαίρεση στο "Who Snatched the Baby?" ep. Για παράδειγμα η waltz χαλαρότητα του ομώνυμου κομματιού με την ασυνήθιστη θεματολογία, ή το θλιμμένο "One Child" που θυμίζει κάτι μεταξύ νανουρίσματος και πένθιμου εμβατηρίου. Ο δίσκος κλείνει με ένα... ναυτικό τραγούδι, το "Yo!", γεμάτο χαρά και πανηγύρι ("Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum, I swear by the scar on my left thumb...."), αν και βέβαια θα υπάρχει και κάτι το τραγικό σε αυτή την παρωδία. Σίγουρα θα το απολαύσετε !!!

ENG: Closing this monthly tribute to 12inch eps we will deal with our mostly favourites Band of Holy Joy and their "Who Snatched the Baby?" ep back from 1986, therefore it is one of their first releases. The music of The Band of Holy Joy is somehow unusual as they easily combine folk along with cabaret music and several conventional new wave elements on the basis of experimentation. Their unpredictable lyric themes seem to tell simple stories though. "Who Snatched the Baby?" ep is of course no exception: the waltzy smoothness of the odd-themed title track, the sadly "One Child" is the epitomy of a lullaby and a dead march. The ep closes with a...sailors song called "Yo!" in a feastful mood ("Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum, I swear by the scar on my left thumb...."), however I have to mention that something tragic sneaks beneath this parody. Enjoy !!!

Medium Medium: Splendid Isolation 12" 1982, Plexus Holland

Επιστρέψαμε και εμείς μετά από σύντομες διακοπές ξανά στον "Αύγουστο των 12ιντσων αναρτήσεων". Για την επιστροφή επιλέξαμε τους Medium Medium και το όχι τόσο γνωστό 12" e.p. "Splendid Isolation" του 1982. Από άποψη στυλ το "Splendid Isolation" είναι ένα βήμα πιο πέρα από το διάσημο "Hungry, So Angry" (αδιαμφισβήτητο new wave διαμάντι), αλλά και από την γόνιμη χαλαρότητα του LP "The Glitterhouse". Με άλλα λόγια, τα 3 κομμάτια "Splendid Isolation", "If You Touched, Her She'd Smear" και "7th Floor" έχουν περισσότερο από τα άλλα τους τραγούδια έντονο το funky στοιχείο, πάντα με το μινιμαλισμό που χαρακτηρίζει τους Medium Medium. Απολαύστε τους!

ENG: After a few days of vacation we returned to the August of 12" e.p. posting. Therefore we prepared for you Medium Medium's not-so-well-known "Splendid Isolation" e.p. back from 1982. In terms of style, this e.p. goes one step beyond the famous "Hungry, So Angry" single and "The Glitterhouse" LP. In other words, the 3 songs of the 12" e.p. "Splendid Isolation", "If You Touched, Her She'd Smear" and "7th Floor" contain more funky elements than ever. The minimalism that characterised Medium Medium's music is there too. Enjoy!

1000 Mexicans: The Last Pop Song 12'' 1984, Abstract Records

Σειρά έχουν σήμερα οι 1000 Mexicans, ένα Βρετανικό σχήμα new wave, από τα πιο εκκεντρικά και επαναστατικά στο χώρο τους, από μουσικής αλλά και πολιτικής άποψης. Απίστευτοι χιουμορίστες και καυστικοί όσον αφορά τους στίχους και ταυτόχρονα δημιουργικοί και πειραματικοί όσον αφορά τη μουσική. Στη σημερινή ανάρτηση φιλοξενούμε το πρώτο τους 12'' ep με τον ευφάνταστο τίτλο "The Last Pop Song" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1984. Σίγουρα δεν πρόκειται για το τελευταίο ποπ τραγούδι, αλλά σίγουρα για ένα από τα πιο ωραία new wave τραγούδια που γράφτηκαν ποτέ. Όσο για τα υπόλοιπα τρία κομμάτια που φιλοξενούνται σε αυτό το 12ιντσο, είναι ακριβώς αυτό που χαρακτήρισε τους 1000 Mexicans: αναρχικός στίχος και ρυθμός. Απολαύστε τους!!

ENG: It's 1000 Mexicans' turn today, they were a British new wave collective, one of the most eccentric and revolutionary in both musical and political ways. They were great in their caustic and humourous lyrics, and when it came to music they were creative experimental at the same time. In today's post we have their first 12inch ep of 1984 with the imaginable title "The Last Pop Song". Definitely it is not the 'last pop song' ever, it is however one of the best new wave tunes ever written. As for the three remaining songs of the ep, those are exactly what defined 1000 Mexicans: anarchic lyrics and rhythms. Enjoy!!

The Tempest: Montezuma 12'', 1983 Anagram Records

Καλό μήνα φίλες και φίλοι, ειδικά εσείς που δεν έχετε πάει για διακοπές ακόμα - και ελπίζουμε να πάτε σύντομα. Είπαμε για τον Αύγουστο να τον αφιερώσουμε σε αναρτήσεις 12ιντσων και eps, έτσι για αλλαγή. Σήμερα έχουμε τους The Tempest και το 12ιντσο ep "Montezuma" του 1983. Οι The Tempest ήταν ένα new wave/post punk συγκρότημα του οποίου δημιουργός και κύριος συνθέτης ήταν ο Alex Novak. Άν αυτό το όνομα σας θυμίζει κάτι, είναι επειδή είναι μια προσωπικότητα στην ανεξάρτητη ροκ μουσική σκηνή και έχει δημιουργήσει και έχει δουλέψει-συνεργαστεί σε μερικά (εκτός των Tempest βέβαια) αξιόλογα μουσικά σχήματα όπως Religious Overdose (new wave), Venus Fly Trap (gothic/alternative rock σχήμα με τους οποίους θα ασχοληθούμε σε μελλοντική ανάρτηση). Επίσης έχει συνεργαστεί για ένα διάστημα και με τους Attrition (darkwave). Για παραπέρα πληροφορίες δείτε εδώ μια σελίδα σχετικά με τον Alex Novak. ENG: Wish you a great August my friends, especially to those who haven't been on vacation yet - wish you go on vacation pretty soon. We devoted this August in posting only 12'' eps, just for a change. In this post we present The Tempest and their 12'' ep entitled "Montezuma" from 1983. The Tempest were a new wave/post punk act whose creator and main author was Alex Novak. If this name rings a bell - and it should - it is because he is an essential figure of this music scene as he has created Religious Overdose (new wave), Venus Fly Trap (gothic/alternative rock - we will deal with them in the near future) and worked with bands like Attrition (darkwave). For more info, check this page about Alex Novak.Now coming back to "Montezuma" 12inch ep it is the second release by The Tempest. Their first one was the 7inch "Lady Left This" (Phoenix Hairpins blog has a post on this 7''). In addition, they have released an LP too entitled "5 Against The House" in 1984 of which we don't know much about. Have a good listening to this one!!!

Bazooka Joe: Two Thirds mLP 1989, Merkin Records

Κλείνουμε τον Ιούλιο με ένα συγκρότημα από τις ΗΠΑ, τους Bazooka Joe. Συμπτωματικά έχουν το ίδιο όνομα με τους Βέλγους Bazooka Joe, αλλά ελάχιστα είναι τα κοινά που έχουν. Οι δεύτεροι είναι γνωστοί κυρίως σε goth/industrial κύκλους. Όμως σήμερα σας παρουσιάζουμε τους Αμερικάνους Bazooka Joe και το mini LP τους "Two Thirds" του 1989, και το οποίο είναι ίσως από τους δίσκους που αν και δεν είναι σπάνιοι, δεν τους πολυβλέπεις. Ήταν άκαρπες οι προσπάθειες για ανεύρεση πληροφοριών μέσω του internet, αν κατά πάσα πιθανότητα το "Two Thirds" είναι η μία και μοναδική τους κυκλοφορία. Το μουσικό τους στυλ είναι καθαρόαιμο post punk, με την κιθάρα μόνιμα στην παραμόρφωση και το μπάσο κυριολεκτικά να "ζωγραφίζει". Μπορούμε να πούμε πως έχουν και κάποια punk-garage στοιχεία, αν κρίνουμε από το κλείσιμο του δίσκου "(She's) Just Like Mae West". Ένας καλός δίσκος που θα ικανοποιήσει ιδιαίτερα τους λάτρεις της post punk.

ENG: It's the end of July and we are bringing a group from the US called Bazooka Joe. By coincidence they have the same name with the known Belgian goth/industrial act Bazooka Joe, but besides the name there's nothing else in common. Nevertheless, today we are presenting the US folks whose mini LP "Two Thirds" from 1989 is a record that you don't come across very often. Once again our efforts in finding anything on the net about this band turned to be fruitless, and most probably "Two Thirds" mLP is the only release. In terms of style, they are a pure blooded post punk band, proved by the permanently distorted guitar, and the distinctive bass lines. There are some garage-punk elements as well, judging from the last song "(She's) Just Like Mae West". Overall a pleasant listening to satisfy particularly the post punk fans.

Vorgruppe: Im Herzen Von Nielsen 2 1981, Nielsen 2 Schallplatten

Φίλες και φίλοι η σημερινή ανάρτηση αφορά ένα συγκρότημα της Neue Deutche Welle σκηνής, τους Vorgruppe και το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ τους με τίτλο "Im Herzen Von Nielsen 2" του 1981. Δυστυχώς και γι αυτούς δεν υπάρχουν πολλές πληροφορίες διαθέσιμες στο διαδίκτυο (όπου και η μεγαλύτερη δεξαμενή πληροφοριών), εκτός από το γεγονός πως έχουν κυκλοφορήσει συνολικά τρείς μεγάλους δίσκους, δύο επτάϊντσα και ένα e.p. Το "Im Herzen Von Nielsen 2" έχει ανέβει παλιότερα και σε άλλα blogs με τα περισσότερα links να είναι πλέον ανενεργά. Θεωρήσαμε πως το LP αυτό είναι από τα καλύτερα του είδους και θα πρέπει να 'ανέβει' ξανά έτσι ώστε να το γνωρίσουν και οι αναγνώστες μας. Η μουσική των Vorgruppe έχει πολλά ηλεκτρονικά και minimal synth στοιχεία, αλλά και πολλά πειραματικά στοιχεία από τις προφανείς kraut rock επιρροές. Όπως είπαμε πιο πάνω, η χρήση των synthesizers καλύπτει ολόκληρο το φάσμα της μουσικής τους, αλλά και η κιθάρα εμπλουτίζει τον ήχο, όπως γίνεται για παράδειγμα στο φοβερό instrumental-ομώνυμο κομμάτι "Nielsen 2". Τα παραμορφωμένα φωνητικά είναι κι αυτά πρότυπα της kraut rock, και μαζί με τον γερμανικό στίχο προσθέτουν στην ατμόσφαιρα που χτίζουν τα 80's synthesizers. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι ένα εξαίσιο LP γεμάτο 13 δυναμικές συνθέσεις που οπωσδήποτε δεν περνούν απαρατήρητες.

Είμαστε πεπεισμένοι πως το "Im Herzen Von Nielsen 2" υπήρξε έμπνευση για πολλά (νέα) συγκροτήματα της synth wave/minimal synth σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο από τότε. Κατά τη γνώμη μας, ένα μοναδικό άλμπουμ σημαντικό στην Ευρωπαϊκή new wave σκηνή, αξίζει να το ακούσετε!!!

ENG: Our friends, today's post is about a Neue Deutche Welle group called Vorgruppe and their first serlf-released album entitled "Im Herzen Von Nielsen 2" in 1981. Once again there aren't much to be found on the net except for their list of releases (three LPs, two 7-inch singles, and an e.p.). "Im Herzen Von Nielsen 2" LP has been posted in the past by other bloggers, however most of the links are inactive now. Nevertheless, we consider this LP to be excellent, therefore it should be reposted/reuploaded afresh so new readers will get to know it. Vorgruppe use lots of electronic/minimal synth elements, and at the same time they experiment a bit - definitely influenced by the German progressive/kraut rock scene. As mentioned above, the extensive use of synthesizers is their trademark here, however the guitar is also important and enriching (check the excellent instrumental track "Nielsen 2"). Equally, the kraut-like distorted vocals and the German lyrics add to the synth atmospherics. The result is an exquisite LP whose 13 powefull songs aren't easily unnoticed.

We are pretty convinced that the "Im Herzen..." LP has been an elementary influence for many new wave/minimal synth groups on a worldwide scale ever since. In our opinion, it's a fundamental album of the European scene, it's worth listening to it!!!

Statues In Motion: Statues In Motion, 1983 Three Eggs Records

Η σημερινή ανάρτηση είναι μια καλοκαιρινή έκπληξη-προσφορά από έναν πολύ καλό φίλο του blog που μας δάνεισε τον δίσκο για να τον ψηφιοποιήσουμε και εν συνεχεία να τον "παραδώσουμε" σε όλους εσάς. Εννοείται πως και εμείς ώς λάτρεις του βινυλίου επωφεληθήκαμε που είχαμε για λίγο στα χέρια μας αυτό το δυσεύρετο LP. Ευχαριστούμε λοιπόν τον πάρα πολύ καλό φίλο που μας εμπιστεύτηκε το πολύτιμο βινύλιο αλλά θέλησε παρολ' αυτά να μείνει ανώνυμη η χειρονομία του.

Αναφερόμαστε σε ένα από τα "cult" διαμάντια της Ελληνικής new wave δισκογραφίας. Μιλάμε βέβαια για το ομώνυμο LP "Statues In Motion" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1983 και που σήμερα πλέον φαντάζει ώς ένα από τα καλύτερα άλμπουμ στο είδος του - πάντα μιλάμε για τα ελληνικά δεδομένα. Οι Statues In Motion μοιάζουν σαν να ήρθαν από το πουθενά, είναι ακατόρθωτο να βρει κανείς πληροφορίες γι αυτούς στο διαδίκτυο, ακόμη και τα ονόματά τους (2 κύρια μέλη: Alvin Dean, Billy Knight) είναι ψευδώνυμα. Πάντως, εκτός από αυτό το LP δεν έχουν αφήσει άλλα ίχνη. Αυτό το LP λοιπόν είναι το κληροδότημά τους στο μέλλον (στο οποίο βρισκόμαστε εμείς τώρα), γιατί όσον αφορά το (δικό τους) παρόν, έμειναν στα αζήτητα, άγνωστοι για τους περισσότερους. Tο παράξενο είναι πως είχαν την υποστήριξη μεγάλης δισκογραφικής εταιρείας (η Three Eggs ήταν παρακλάδι της Μίνως Μάτσας και Υιός!!!). Τώρα πια (στο μέλλον) έχει αναγνωριστεί αλλά και μυθοποιηθεί η μουσική τους από τους θαυμαστές της new wave/dark wave σκηνής που άλλωστε έχουν αγκαλιάσει και πολλά από τα συγκροτήματα του ρομαντικού ήχου της δεκαετίας του 80, οπότε, γιατί όχι και τους Statues In Motion; Έτσι λοιπόν αυτό το μοναδικό LP με minimal synth στοιχεία, περιέχει 9 κομμάτια το ένα καλύτερο από το άλλο. Συνολικά είναι ένα μελαγχολικό αριστούργημα, άν και όχι τόσο σκοτεινό ή gothic, στέκεται άνετα στο ημίφως, στο σούρουπο της μουσικής αυτής. Αυτή η συγκρατημένη απαισιοδοξία που απορρέει από την μουσική τους, αυτός ο "σχεδόν χορευτικός" ήχος, τα υποτονικά αλλά αποφασιστικά φωνητικά και γενικά η χαμηλού προφίλ ενορχήστρωση κάνουν αυτό το "ασήμαντο" άκουσμα ένα μεγαλούργημα. Το μόνο που ξεπερνάει τα παραπάνω είναι το ίδιο το όνομα του συγκροτήματος που η σημασία του (απόδοση: "Αγάλματα σε Κίνηση") υποδηλώνει μια δυναμική, πως δηλαδή και το "αδύνατο μπορεί να συμβεί"... Κάτι ανάλογο του να λέμε πως "Οι Νεκροί Μπορούν να Χορέψουν" (Dead Can Dance).

Αλλά ας πάμε πάλι στη μουσική. θα ανακαλύψετε 9 πανέμορφα κομμάτια εμπνευσμένα είτε από τους παιδικούς/εφηβικούς έρωτες του E.A. Poe ("Virginia Clemm"), είτε από τους εφηβικούς ήρωες των Statues In Motion. Τα "Future Myth", "Let's Face the Heroes", "Autumn In Paris", "Statues" και τα υπόλοιπα αριστουργήματα αν και φτιαγμένα με απλοϊκά synth, υποτονικές κιθάρες, αλλά και πανέμορφους στίχους, παραπέμπουν στους προϋπάρχοντες ήρωες της μουσικής αυτής David Bowie, πρώιμους Ultravox, Joy Division, πρώιμου New Order, Bauhaus, Magazine, Danse Society και πάρα πολλούς άλλους. Ναί όντως οι επιρροές είναι εκεί, και ίσως ακούγοντας τους να σας έρθουν και άλλες στο μυαλό. Όμως το αποτέλεσμα είναι κάτι μοναδικό.

Αν και έχει ανέβει και σε κάποια φιλικά blogs παλιότερα, εδώ θα το βρείτε ψηφιοποιημένο κατ' ευθείαν από το αρχικό βινύλιο μαζί με υψηλής ποιότητας σαρώσεις εξώφυλλου/οπισθόφυλλου. Για όσους δεν το γνωρίζουν ή δεν έτυχε να το ακούσουν θα είναι μια ευχάριστη έκπληξη. Καλή ακρόαση σε όλους λοιπόν.

ENG: Today's post is a summertime surprise, an offer from one of our blog's great friend who lent us the record for ripping and then "delivering" to all our readers. It was nice for us the vinyl lovers to have this valuable LP even for a small period of time. Of course we thank him for entrusting the precious LP, however he wished to remain anonymous. This gesture results in having finally a good mp3 copy of this LP. We refer to one of the "cult" jewels of the Greek new wave discography. The long intro is about the Statues in Motion and their homonymous 1983 LP, nowadays is considered to be one of the best albums of it's genre - always talking about the Greek standards of the era.

The Statues in Motion seem to have come from the thin air, its impossible to find any information for them on the net, even their names (the main members: Alvin Dean, Billy Knight) are pseudonyms and besides this album there are no other traces of them. More specifically, this one LP is their legacy for the future, yet in their own present they were unknown to the most even though they had the support of a major Greek record label (Minos Matsas owned Three Eggs). Nowadays S.I.M. are renowned legends among the fans of new/dark wave music who embraced part of the romantic 80's music scene as well.

So this unique minimal synth LP contains nine excellent songs, all equally great. Altogether the "Statues in Motion" album is a melancholic masterpiece, even not so dark as to be called gothic, but surely stands in the penumbra of this genre. Their music is full of a moderate optimism, an almost danceable potential, the timid but determinative vocals and the overall low-profile arrangement turn this "nonessential" LP into a masterpiece. The only thins that overpowers our previous statement is the potential connoted by the meaning of their own name, as if something impossible to happen (the statues to move). Dare we say that it contains the same potential like the well known "Dead can Dance".

Let us return to the music again. What you are about to listen to is nine great songs inspired either by E.A. Poe's nubile love sentiments ("Virginia Clemm"), or the pubescent heroes of the group. Songs such as "Future Myth", "Let's Face the Heroes", "Autumn In Paris", "Statues" and the rest, are composed with the use of simple synth, low-profile guitars in addition to the wonderful lyrics, pay tribute to the heroes of this music; David Bowie, early Ultravox, Joy Division, early New Order, Bauhaus, Magazine, Danse Society and many many more. Regardless the traceable influences the result is unique.

Although this LP has already been uploaded by other blogs as well, here you will find a 10.000 eyes quality rip directly from the original vinyl along with high quality scans of the front/back covers. Cpt Nefos: Cadillac Dreams 7'' 1983, Happening Records plus Silence Interrupted LP 1984, Creep Records

Στη σημερινή -και κάπως καθυστερημένη- ανάρτηση σας παρουσιάζουμε με μεγάλη μας χαρά ένα από τα πλέον αγαπημένα μας new wave/post punk συγκροτήματα από την Ελλάδα, είναι επίσης ένα από τα πιο παλιά - σχεδόν από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1980. Μιλάμε για τους Cpt Neφos, το βραχύβιο αυτό μουσικό σχήμα που μας χάρισε το κλασικό "Cadillac Dreams". Οι Cpt Neφos είναι δημιούργημα του Άκη Μπογιατζή ο οποίος στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 80 σχημάτισε τους Libido Blume (με τα δύο LP και το ένα mLP τους θα ασχοληθούμε στο προσεχές μέλλον), ενώ τα τελευταία 20 χρόνια "τρέχει" με το τρένο των καταπληκτικών Sigmatropic. Όμως εδώ η ανάρτηση αφορά μόνο τους Cpt Neφos στους οποίους συμμετείχαν εκτός από τον Άκη Μπογιατζή (στα φωνητικά και στο μπάσσο) και οι Μάκης Βρεττός στα κρουστά, Ιάκωβος Μανής στην κιθάρα και στα δεύτερα φωνητικά και τέλος ο Γιώργος Τσουρλάκης στο σαξόφωνο. Δημιουργήθηκαν το 1982 εν μέσω της άνθησης του punk αλλά και post punk μουσικού κινήματος σύγχρονοι των Stress, Ausswich, Ανυπόφοροι, Metro Decay, Villa 21, South of No North κ.α. Μετά από πολλές πρόβες και κάποιες ζωντανές εμφανίσεις (είναι χαρακτηριστική η αφήγηση από την πρώτη τους εμφάνιση στου Γκύζη, όπου έπαιζαν μαζί με Stress και Ausswich και τελικά η συναυλία να διακόπτεται με την παρέμβαση της αστυνομίας (πηγή: www.anexartisi.gr). Όπως είπαμε και πιο πάνω, οι Cpt Neφos ήταν βραχύβιο σχήμα, κυκλοφόρησαν μόνο ένα 7ιντσο και ένα LP. Το 1983 ήταν η χρονιά κυκλοφορίας του 7ιντσου "Cadillac Dreams" (b-side "Enjoying") στην Happening Records. Και τα δύο κομμάτια του single ήταν δυναμικά δείγματα της μουσικής κατεύθυνσης του συγκροτήματος και μια γεύση του τι θα επακολουθούσε στο LP, δηλαδή μιλάμε για πρωτότυπη μουσική σε πρότυπα πολύ μπροστά από την εποχή της - πάντα αναφερόμαστε στα Ελληνικά δεδομένα. Πιστεύουμε πως το κομμάτι "Cadillac Dreams" είναι από τα πιο γνωστά και αγαπημένα πολλών οπαδών της μουσικής αυτής εντός και εκτός των γεωγραφικών ορίων της Ελλάδας. Την επόμενη χρονιά, 1984, κυκλοφόρησε και το LP τους με τίτλο "Silence Interrupted" αυτή τη φορά στην θρυλική Creep Records. To "Silence Interrupted" είναι απλά ένας τέλειος new wave δίσκος, κάθε κομμάτι καταπληκτικό, πρωτότυπο, με επίσης ωραίους και καλογραμμένους στίχους, άψογη ενορχήστρωση. Ακούγοντας τον δίσκο έστω και από το mp3 μπορεί κανείς να νοιώσει την ενέργεια της μουσικής αλλά και των δημιουργών της. Δεν μπορούμε να ξεχωρίσουμε κανένα κομμάτι από τα 11 που απαρτίζουν το "Silence Interrupted" ως "το καλύτερο" γιατί απλούστατα είναι όλα τους αξεπέραστα... θα το διαπιστώσετε ακούγοντάς τα, όταν μάλιστα θα θελήσετε να πατήσετε το replay για να το ακούσετε από την αρχή συν την ακόμα πιο ζωηρή επανεκτέλεση του "Cadillac Dreams". Επίσης, αυτό που κάνει τα τραγούδια τους ασύγκριτα, είναι το χαρακτηριστικό παίξιμο της κιθάρας και το πως δένει με το σαξόφωνο, το άψογο μπάσσο και φυσικά η χαρακτηριστική και απίστευτα εκφραστική και ασύγκριτη φωνή του Άκη που ακόμα και σήμερα είναι ίδια απαράλλαχτη στην μουσική των Sigmatropic. Ίσως μάλιστα σε αυτά τα πιο παλιά τραγούδια να θυμίζει ελαφρώς Robert Smith, αλλά πως να γίνει διαφορετικά, οι Cure ήταν μια από τις μεγαλύτερες επιρροές στην Ελληνική new wave/post punk σκηνή. Ευχόμαστε καλή ακρόαση, είμαστε σίγουροι πως θα ευχαριστηθείτε τη μουσική των Cpt Neφos. 7ιντσο και LP βρίσκονται στο ίδιο αρχείο.

ENG: In today's -somehow delayed- post we are very happy to present one of our ever favourite Greek new wave/post punk bands. It is also one of the oldest, back in the early 80's. This small intro is about Cpt Neφos (=Captain Nefos=Meaning Captain Smog in English) a short-lived group that gave us the classic "Cadillac Dreams" single. Cpt Neφos was the creation of Akis Boyatzis who also created new wave act Libido Blume in the mid 80's and the amazing Sigmatropic in the late 90's (we will deal with the releases of Libido Blume in the near future). But this post is about Cpt Neφos, isn't it? The band except Akis Boyatzis (vocals, bass guitar) included Makis Vrettos (drums, percussion), Iakovos Manis (guitar, backing vocals) and Giorgos Tsourlakis (saxophone). They emerged as a group in 1982, in the period that punk, new wave and post punk music were blooming in Greece. Contemporary and fellow bands included Stress, Ausswich, Anypoforoi (meaning=Intolerants), Metro Decay, Villa 21, South of No North. Cpt Neφos' ever first live appearance took place in the Ghyzi area in Athens along with Stress and Ausswich (punk bands) and it is said that the police interrupted and finally terminated the concert, so you know what we are talking about (source: www.anexartisi.gr). As mentioned above, Cpt Neφos was a short-lived group, released only a 7inch single and an LP. The 7 inch was released in 1983 under Happening Records and was entitled "Cadillac Dreams" (b-side "Enjoying"), both songs were samples of where their music orientation and what the following LP would be about. Always having in mind that we are referiing to Greek independent music scene during the 1980's, this LP is outstanding and original, in addition, the "Cadillac Dreams" is a lifetime classic new wave song, one of the most popular hits in Greece and abroad. The band next year released "Silence Interrupted" LP, this time through the legendary Creep Records. "Silence Interrupted" is simply a great album for new wave/post punk fans, every song an original with great music and lyrics, an overall flawless arrangement. By just listening to the LP - even in mp3 format - one is able to feel the energy of the music and the musicians as well, then you will want to listen to it again...not to mention that the LP contains a newer spirited and vivid version of "Cadillac Dreams". We avoid pointing any of the songs as the "best song" of the LP, simply because all of them are equally great. This is because of arious reasons: the great guitar play that merges beautifully with the sax, the flawless bass play, as well as the expressive and uncompared voice of Akis Boyatzis (still sounds the same even today with the music of Sigmatropic). Akis' voice may resemble a bit that of Robert Smith's at that time, nevertheless Robert Smith and The Cure were a great influence for the Greek independent scene. We wish you a good listening, we are certain that it will be enjoyable. Both 7inch and LP rips are in the same .rar file.

VA: Red Flame... a Compilation circa 1984, Virgin-Red Flame-Ink Records

Αυτή τη φορά σας έχουμε ετοιμάσει μια συλλογή η οποία κυκλοφόρησε μόνο στην Ελλάδα περίπου το 1983 ή το 1984 από την Virgin και η οποία περιέχει συμμετοχές των ανεξάρτητων δισκογραφικών Red Flame και Ink Records με συγκροτήματα κυρίως από Μεγάλη Βρετανία και ένα από την Αυστραλία (Severed Heads). Ας πάρουμε ως αφετηρία την πρώτη πλευρά του δίσκου, δηλαδή τα κομμάτια 1-6, βλέπουμε πως κινούνται στο χώρο του κιθαριστικού new wave (Moodists, Decorators) αλλά και με funk στοιχεία (C Cat Trance από μέλη των Medium Medium) και σκοτεινό ηλεκτρονικό ήχο (David Harrow, γνωστός από τη συνεργασία του με την Anne Clark). Στην δεύτερη πλευρά (7-12) αφού ακούσουμε τους ηλεκτρονικούς Severed Heads και τους πειραματικούς Artery, μετά το τοπίο αλλάζει σε πιο jazzy-pop στυλ (Shiny Two Shiny, Cynthia Scott) αλλά και ethnic (Kabbala).
Τυπικός ο διαχωρισμός των στυλ ανά πλευρά την δεκαετία του 80, προσπαθώντας να συμπεριλάβει διάφορα ανομοιογενή είδη. Ελπίζουμε πως γενικά θα σας αρέσει η συλλογή αυτή, έστω και με τόση ποικιλία. Βέβαια ένας ακόμα λόγος που βρίσκεται εδώ κυρίως είναι για... εκθεσιακούς σκοπούς - αν και δεν πρόκειται για συλλεκτικό κομμάτι, αλλά επειδή την δεκαετία του 80 ήταν ελάχιστες οι συλλογές που κυκλοφορούσαν στην Ελλάδα. Η συγκεκριμένη μπορούμε να πούμε πως ήταν από τις πλέον αξιόλογες.

ENG: This time we have a compilation prepared. It was only released in Greece circa 1984 by Virgin Records and contained groups mainly from the U.K. and one from Australia (Severed Heads). Let's take a closer look on the first side of the record (songs 1-6). The reason why we do that is because side one is much different than side two in terms of style. So οn the first side some groups belong to the guitar oriented new wave style (Moodists, Decorators), others are more funk-oriented (C Cat Trance, once members of Medium Medium), as well as darker new wave tunes (David Harrow, also known from his collaboration with Anne Clark). On side two the musicscape is different as it begins qith somehow electronic-oriented new wave (Severed Heads) and experimental sounds (Artery). From then on it is totally different, as Shiny Two Shiny and Cynthia Scott give a much more poppish-jazzy colour and the compilation endswith an ethnic tune from Kabbala.

This was quite typical in the 80's, to mix different music styles in result to contain more heterogeneous genres in one compilation. We hope that you will like the compilation as a whole, even though it is musically diverse. However the reason we post it is also exhibitional, even though it isn't about a collector's item, those kind of compilations were rare in Greece in the 1980's. However, this particular one was one of the most notable.

De Div: Stap Voor Stap e.p. 1981 plus Open Zee mini LP 1984 both Plexus Holland Records

Συνεχίζουμε τις καλοκαιρινές μουσικές αναζητήσεις-αναρτήσεις μας με τους De Div, ένα new wave συγκρότημα από την Ολλανδία με χαρακτηριστικό ήχο και μέλωδίες τόσο φρέσκιες σαν να πρόκειται για σύγχρονη μπάντα. Επιπρόσθετα, έχουν την ωραία επιμονή να ντύνουν τη μουσική τους με στίχους στη δική τους γλώσσα (Ολλανδικά) ίσως αδιαφορώντας για την φήμη και την επιτυχία έξω από τα γεωγραφικά όρια των Κάτω Χωρών. Όλα τα παραπάνω αναδεικνύουν τους De Div ως ξεχωριστούς και κάνουν τη μουσική τους διακρίσιμη, και πλέον σχεδόν 30 χρόνια μετά αρκετά νοσταλγική. Στην πρώτη τους κυκλοφορία του 1981 το πρώτο e.p. με τίτλο "Stap Voor Stap" ("Βήμα προς Βήμα") και τους απλούς μεν αλλά και σύνθετους ρυθμούς των καλοδουλεμένων τραγουδιών (τα οποία στην εποχή τους ίσως ήταν και χορευτικά hit), συμμετέχει στην παραγωγή ο Dirk Polak των Mecano. Οι De Div αποδεικνύονται ένα πολύ δεμένο σχήμα και γι αυτό η μουσική τους είναι ατόφια και τόσο χαρακτηριστικά αβίαστη, με την rhythm section από τη μία να χτίζει αποφασιστικά τα τραγούδια και τις ωραίες ερασιτεχνικές μεν, αριστοτεχνικές δε, κιθάρες από την άλλη, να "δουλεύουν" στην λεπτομέρεια. Δεν μπορέσαμε να ξεχωρίσουμε ως καλύτερο κανένα από τα 4 τραγούδια αυτού του πρώτου τους e.p. γιατί πολύ απλά πρόκειται για ένα καταπληκτικό ντεμπούτο.

Επιπλέον, αναρτούμε και την τέταρτη κυκλοφορία τους, το μίνι-LP "Open Zee" ("Ανοιχτή Θάλασσα") του 1984, που στέκεται μερικά σκαλιά πιο πάνω από το ντεμπούτο "Stap Voor Stap", κυρίως από άποψη ωριμότητας. Στο "Open Zee" λοιπόν, ο ήχος είναι πιο "ηλεκτρικός" και ορμητικός, εστιασμένος στην κιθάρα, χωρίς βέβαια να χάνει καθόλου σε δύναμη η χαρακτηριστική rhythm section. Ακόμα και τα φωνητικά στο "Open Zee" ακούγονται πιο παθιασμένα σε σχέση με τα συγκρατημένα φωνητικά του πρώτου e.p. Δεν προσπαθούμε να συγκρίνουμε τις δύο κυκλοφορίες γιατί αντιπροσωπεύουν διαφορετικές χρονικές περιόδους, άλλωστε μεταξύ τους έχουν μεσολαβήσει και άλλες, αλλά οπωσδήποτε είναι εμφανής η ωρίμανση του συγκροτήματος, στα μεταβατικά στάδια προς την ακμή, ή ακόμα και προς την φθορά.

Πιστεύουμε πως θα σας αρέσουν αρκετά οι De Div, ιδιαίτερα όσοι δεν τους γνωρίζατε από πριν. Όπως πάντα, περιμένουμε τα σχόλιά σας και την γνώμη σας. Και οι δύο κυκλοφορίες σε ένα αρχείο ΕΔΩ.

ENG: We continue our summertime posts/quests with De Div, a new wave group from Holland with characteristic sound features, as fresh as if they were modern. They insisted in using Dutch lyrics and perhaps this may have been an obstacle concerning their fame outside the borders of The Netherlands. All the above imply that they are a special kind of group with distinctive music, yet it becomes somehow nostalgic 30 years later... The e.p. "Stap Voor Stap" is their ever first release pulsating with simple yet complex rhythms (may have been quite danceable at that time). A great figure of the Dutch new wave, Dirk Polak of Mecano is on production as well. All in all, De Div prove to be a well bound group, their music comes solid and characteristically unconstrained; the songs are mainly built on the rhythm section, the guitars no matter how amateurish, they are well played, "knitting" in detail. Overall, it is a great debut e.p., all 4 songs are equally outstanding.

Additionally, we present their fourth release as well, the 1984 mini LP entitled "Open Zee", where De Div seem to move forward and become more mature. At the same time, their music seems to be more impulsive and electrified, focusing on the guitar play, yet the distinct rhythm section is still there, solid. Even the vocals are more passionate in the "Open Zee" mini LP, compared to the restrained vocals of the first e.p. Of course, we cannot compare those two releases since they are not time-contiguous. However the group's maturation is quite apparent in "Open Zee", no matter where the next releases got them to, either prime or decay.

We strongly believe that De Div will become one of your favourites, especially to those who never heard of this band before.

The Mirrorshades: Updated!!!

Ζητούμε συγγνώμη από όσους κατέβασαν το ντέμο των Mirrorshades, γιατί υπήρχε ένα λάθος στην αντιστοίχιση δύο τραγουδιών. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, το "Time" ήταν στη θέση του "Give Me A Chance to Change" από λάθος βέβαια και όχι σκόπιμα. Για όσους λοιπόν πήραν το ντέμο ώς την Κυριακή 5 Ιουνίου, κάντε τον κόπο απλά να αλλάξετε τα ονόματα-τίτλους των 2 τραγουδιών. Δηλαδή το "Time" είναι ουσιαστικά το "Give Me A Chance...". Για όσους το κατεβάζουν από σήμερα και μετά, η σειρά είναι σωστή. Και πάλι συγγνώμη για τον κόπο αλλά που και που συμβαίνουν και αυτά.


ENG: We apologize to those who downloaded the Mirrorshades demo tape until yesterday Sunday June 5. Apparently, 2 of the songs were repectively mistitled!!! Specifically, "Time" was in the the place of "Give Me A Chance to Change" by mistake and of course, not intentionally. So, all you friends have to do is just rename the two songs respectively (song #3 is "Give Me A Chance..." and song#4 is "Time".
