Αν και αρχικά ήμαστε διστακτικοί όσον αφορά την ανάρτηση του mini LP "Esquisses" του ομώνυμου σχήματος/project, η εύρεση της σημασίας της λέξης "esquisses" μάς έδωσε περισσότερο θάρρος. Ακόμη και αν δεν είμαστε εντελώς σίγουροι για το ακριβές νόημα και περιεχόμενο της λέξης, πιστεύουμε πως σημαίνει "σκίτσο", ή "υπόνοια" και το συγκεκριμένο mini LP φαίνεται πως αντιπροσωπεύει και τις δύο έννοιες. Πρώτα-πρώτα είναι "σκίτσο" επειδή τα κομμάτια μοιάζουν να είναι ημιτελή και έπειτα είναι "υπόνοια" γιατί ο σκοπός και το νόημα των "μισοτελειωμένων" τραγουδιών παρέμεινε ασαφής. Χωρίς όμως να έχουμε την πρόθεση να φιλοσοφήσουμε περισσότερο, θεωρούμε ως ανάγκη μας να προσθέσουμε πως αρχικά μάθαμε για αυτό το επίτηδες πρόχειρο και ατελές διαμάντι (όπως κι πολλά άλλα) στο blog Phoenix Hairpins. Αν και η ανάρτηση είναι ακόμη εκεί, το αρχείο όμως λείπει και παρ' όλη τον αρχικό δισταγμό μας αισθανθήκαμε πως αυτό το υποδειγματικό άλμπουμ αξίζει μια νέα ψηφιοποίηση καθώς και νέα ανάρτηση.

Επιπλέον, ενώ τα κομμάτια αυτά είναι χτισμένα κάπως μινιμαλιστικά και λιτά, έχουν μια ξεχωριστή ποιητική δυναμική. Εννοείται πως θα θελήσετε να το ξανα-ακούσετε αρκετές φορές. Για εμάς η μουσική αυτή πρέπει να ντύνει φθινοπωρινά απογεύματα και μας κάνει να νιώθουμε ωραία καθώς ξυπνά την νοσταλγία. Καλή σας ακρόαση.

To our mind, it couldn't be truer than this because this particular mini LP is both; first of all a 'sketch' because its songs seem as if they were barely finished, and secondly a 'hint' because of them not being finished, therefore their meaning and purpose remained vague. However not wanting to be any more philosophical, we need to say that the first time we've become aware of the existence of this deliberately sketchy gem was through Phoenix Hairpins' blog. The blogpost is still there, but the download link isn't, and despite still being hesitant, we felt that this excellent mini LP deserved a new digitization and a repost as well.
Definitely most of you who are Tuxedomoon fans are already aware that Steven Brown played alto sax on three songs of the album ("No Sin", "First Things First #3" and "Last Time"), but besides that there is a discreet Tuxedomoon feel to the whole musical outcome, albeit not an effort to copy Tuxedomoon, but an honest creation in similar vein.
Similarly mentioned in Phoenix Hairpins' post, the band seems to be of Belgian origin, as the songs were recorded in a studio in Brussels. Additionally it's known that Tuxedomoon members were Brussels residents at the time and Steven Brown should have been around. Anyway, Esquisses' two main members were Mike Shelter and SPY; both must've been pseudonyms. Apart from Steven Brown there were a few musicians who aided in creating this beautiful record.
For those who wonder how the music of Esquisses is like, you won't be disappointed because even though it's a mini LP (approx 32 mins) it is glazed with non-pretentious melancholia and tuned with sincere darkness. The songs are rather minimal, unadorned and austere but they are overly solid and satisfactory with lyrical power. You will definitely want to listen to it a few times. To us, this is music for autumn afternoons and music that makes you feel good because it evokes nostalgia. We hope you enjoy its listen.
