Pantheres Roses: Perversity LP 1985, Dragon Records

Το "Perversity" των Pantheres Roses είναι άλλο ένα άλμπουμ που από καιρό θέλαμε να αναρτήσουμε αλλά τεχνηέντως καθυστερούσαμε. Αιτία αυτής της καθυστέρησης ήταν το γεγονός πως οι πληροφορίες στο διαδίκτυο γι αυτούς είναι μηδαμινές και καθίσταται δύσκολο να αναφερθούμε περαιτέρω. Εκτός αυτού, αυτό το άγνωστο διαμάντι δεν έχει αναρτηθεί σε κανένα από τα "υποψιασμένα" blog. Πρόκειται για Γαλλική κυκλοφορία του 1985 στο ανεξάρτητο label Dragon Records. Προφανώς είναι Γάλλοι και φαίνεται πως έχουν άλλη μία κυκλοφορία με τίτλο "Le Sens Du Glamour" ένα χρόνο πριν. Καλωσορίζουμε οποιον/οποιαδήποτε έχει κάποιες πληροφορίες που θα μας βοηθούσαν να μάθουμε περισσότερα για το σχήμα αυτό.

Από μουσική άποψη οι Pantheres Roses κινούνται στο χώρο του post punk με κλίση στην εξερεύνηση και τον πειραματισμό. Το προφανές αποτέλεσμα είναι τραγούδια τα οποία έχουν τις ρίζες τους στην punk, new wave, ακόμα και στην ψυχεδελική μουσική. Τραγούδια τα οποία ακροβατούν μεταξύ πρωτοτυπίας, καινοτομίας και αυτοσχεδιασμού χωρίς να παύουν να χαρίζουν απόλαυση στον ακροατή. Όντες κάπως αυθαίρετοι, θα λέγαμε πως στο πρώτο άκουσμα θυμίζουν κάπως τους The Band of Holy Joy, με τη διαφορά που οι Pantheres Roses προβάλλουν λιγότερο θεατρικοί και είναι σποραδικά και ηθελημένα χαοτικοί. Πολύ χαρακτηριστικά, για να αναφέρουμε κάποια εξαιρετικά δείγματα της δουλειάς τους που μας έκαναν ιδιαίτερη εντύπωση, όπως τα λαμπρά "Panther's Eyes", "Squatter of Life" και "Kiwi".
Επειδή πρόκειται για ένα κρυμμένο αριστούργημα, προτείνουμε ανεπιφύλακτα να τους ακούσετε.

 ENG: Pantheres Roses' "Perversity" is one of the albums we meant to post a long time ago but intentionally delayed. The main reason for that delay is that we were searching for any information regarding Pantheres Roses. The fact is that there aren't much about them on the Web. Besides that, there have been no posts about them on any of the well-known blogs. They were of French origin and the album was released on Dragon Records in 1985. It came to our attention recently that there is another release the year before that We welcome anyone who might have some info on the band or its releases.
Pantheres Roses are a post punk band with an inclination towards music explorations and experimentation. The songs are obviously influenced by punk, new wave, even psychedelia, yet they waver between originality, innovation and improvisation for the pleasure of the listener. Being somehow arbitrary we'd say that P.R. bring to mind The Band of Holy Joy, notwithstanding the first are deliberately chaotic at times and altogether less theatrical than TBOHJ. If we mention some of the songs that make an impression, the splendid ones "Panther's Eyes", "Squatter of Life" and "Kiwi" are good examples.
This is a hidden gem, so don't miss it. It's recommended!

Libido Blume: Liquid Situation LP 1988, Δικαίωμα Διάβασης

Στους Libido Blume του Άκη Μπογιατζή έχουμε αναφερθεί ήδη άλλες δύο φορές όταν αναρτήσαμε τα "Colours Melting" και "Brilliant Names and Dames", κυκλοφορίες του 1986 και 1987 αντίστοιχα. Σήμερα ολοκληρώνουμε την ανάρτηση της δισκογραφία τους με το "Liquid Situation" του 1988. Όπως και τα άλλα, κυκλοφόρησε μέσω της "Δικαίωμα Διάβασης" (Di Di Music).

Στο "Liquid Situation" οι Libido Blume επιδεικνύουν την δέουσα ωριμότητα και τη απαραίτητη πρωτοτυπία. Θεωρούμε πως το άλμπουμ αυτό είναι ισάξιο των δύο προηγούμενων με μια μικρή στροφή σε πιο "εύπεπτες" μουσικές αναζητήσεις χωρίς να γίνεται έκπτωση στην ήδη γνωστή μελαγχολική χροιά της μουσικής τους. Πιθανόν να βρίσκεται στο μεταίχμιο του μουσικού προσανατολισμού του Άκη Μπογιατζή όπως εκφράστηκε αργότερα με τους Δέκα Μέτρα Δέντρα και ακόμη πιο μετά με τους Sigmatropic. Ακόμα και ο τίτλος του (μετάφρ. Ρευστή Κατάσταση) ίσως υποδηλώνει την κατεύθυνση του Μπογιατζή και των άλλων μελών εκείνη την εποχή.
Και βέβαια η φλέβα της έμπνευσης είναι αστείρευτη για τους Libido και τον Μπογιατζή, αφού και σε αυτό το τρίτο άλμπουμ εκπλήσσουν το ίδιο ευχάριστα με αρκετές νέες, ποικιλόχρωμες συνθέσεις. Εκτός από το ομώνυμο κομμάτι "Liquid Situation" που είναι και από τα καλύτερα τους, υπάρχει άλλο ένα που σίγουρα θα σας αγγίξει και δεν είναι άλλο από το ακουστικό διαμάντι "Under Your Blinding Shadow". Η δε επαναλαμβανόμενη μελωδία στα "Lily Rinds" και "Stormy Love, Rainy June" είναι από αυτές που εντυπώνονται για καιρό. Στα καλύτερα συγκαταλέγεται και το πανέμορφο instrumental "Down For You Is Up" (γνωρίζετε την αγάπη μας για τα instrumental). Βασικό προσόν των Libido είναι πως ακόμη και τα πιο απλά -σχεδόν ποπ- τραγούδια τους είναι δυνατά αριστουργήματα. Οπωσδήποτε προσέξτε τα "Off Hand", "Curious Eyes" και "Once Upon A Time... the Stars" γιατί με το πρώτο άκουσμα δεν θα σας αποκαλυφθούν. Τέλος, αφού περάσετε το κλασικό "House of Light" - πιστά κείμενο στο ύφος του συγκροτήματος - υπάρχει και το καταπληκτικό "Intoxicated" που ενώ δεν μοιάζει με ο,τιδήποτε άλλο έχουν γράψει οι Libido Blume, διατηρεί αυτή την μελαγχολική χροιά.
Καλή ακρόαση στο τελευταίο μεν, αλλά εξίσου απολαυστικό "Liquid Situation"

We have already mentioned "Coulours Melting" and "Brilliant Names and Dames" by Akis Boyatzis' Libido Blume in earlier posts. Only the LP "Liquid Sitation" was missing from a full reference to that excellent band. "Liquid Sitation" was released in 1988 via the Dikaioma Diavasis (Di Di Music) label.
In this third LP Libido Blume demonstrate maturity and originality at the same time. We believe that it is equally strong as its precedent LPs even though there is a slight turn towards more "pop-ish" direction as they manage to retain that already known melancholic hue. This LP is possibly upon the boderline of Akis Boyatzis' turning point as expressed with Deka Metra Dendra (Ten Metre Trees) and Sigmatropic later on. The title of the album may indicate some liquid situation regarding the group and its the members at the time.
Inspiration is inexhaustible for Libido Blume even in this last LP as they tend to surprise with new and colourful compositions. The same titled song "Liquid Situation" is indeed one of the best here, but apart from that, there's another one that you can't avoid loving it; that is "Under Your Blinding Shadow", an acoustic gem. The repeated tunes of "Lily Rinds" and "Stormy Love, Rainy June" will be imprinted in your head for a long time. Also, the excellent instrumental "Down for You is Up" is one of the best songs here. Libido Blume were good at making simple -even pop- songs, which were potential masterpieces, all of them. In other words, pay attention to "Off Hand", "Curious Eyes" and "Once Upon A Time... the Stars" because they don't reveal themselves too easily. Last, and beyond the classic trademark "House of Light", there's the extraordinary "Intoxicated", which is unlike anything else these guys have done, yet retaining that melancholic tone.
Have a good listening to their last but altogether delightful "Liquid Situation".

Chapter 24: Tin Invaders LP 1988, Δικαίωμα Διάβασης

Οι Chapter 24 [ή αλλιώς Κεφάλαιο 24] είναι ένα σχήμα που ξεκίνησαν σχεδόν 30 χρόνια πριν οι Αντώνης Λιβιεράτος και Βαγγέλης Μπουλουχτσής στα Ιωάννινα. Έδωσαν στο συγκρότημα το όνομα ενός τραγουδιού των Pink Floyd, γραμμένο από τον Syd Barrett, δείτε πληροφορίες για το συγκεκριμένο τραγούδι εδώ. Είναι μάλλον δύσκολο να κατατάξουμε τους Chapter 24 σε κάποια συγκεκριμένη κατηγορία αφού έχουν το προσόν να ακούγονται το ίδιο παλιομοδίτικοι μαζί και πρωτοποριακοί δημιουργώντας νέα συναρπαστική μουσική. Το "Tin Invaders" αποτελεί την πρώτη βινυλιακή κυκλοφορία τους μέσω της "Δικαίωμα Διάβασης" [Di Di Music] εν έτει 1988. Πρόκειται για ένα πρωτοποριακό άλμπουμ, στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος του προσανατολισμένο σε μινιμαλιστική synth ψυχεδέλεια με πειραματικό ύφος. Η αρχή γίνεται με το κ-α-τ-α-π-λ-η-κ-τ-ι-κ-ό instrumental "Black Baron's Theme", ίσως ένα από τα καλύτερα ορχηστρικά κομμάτια που έχετε ακούσει ποτέ και παρουσιάζει το άλμπουμ με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο. Ουσιαστικά πρόκειται για άψογο δείγμα ψυχεδελικής ιδιοσυγκρασίας με πρωτότυπη δουλειά στα synth, συνταγή που αποδίδει και στα εννιά καταπληκτικά κομμάτια. Στη συνέχεια ακολουθούν εξίσου αξιόλογα κομμάτια όπως το ομώνυμο "Tin Invaders" όπου συνειδητοποιούμε πως τα φωνητικά του Αντώνη Λιβιεράτου "δένουν" άψογα με την παγερή και  απόκοσμη μουσική. Η δομή των τραγουδιών είναι μεταβαλλόμενη. Ενίοτε λιτή με κιθάρα που κατακλύζεται από synth ("The Corpse", "Homecoming"), ενίοτε πιο σύνθετη όπως στο χειμαρρώδες ημι-παρανοϊκό "Alcohol Mind", στο παροξυσμικά ηλεκτρικό "(Elec)trick Death" αλλά και στο σκοτεινό αριστούργημα "Little Jack's Gun".  Το "The Collector" φυσικά και δεν υστερεί σε τίποτα, ούτε και το λαμπρό instrumental "Soundtrack" που κλείνει αυτό το θαυμάσιο δίσκο. Επιπλέον, το "Soundtrack" είναι όντως μουσική από ταινία μικρού μήκους (δείτε το οπισθόφυλλο).
Πρόκειται για ένα άλμπουμ που λειτουργεί ως βραδυφλεγής εκρηκτικός μηχανισμός που προκαλώντας τον ακροατή ταυτόχρονα χορταίνει τις αισθήσεις. Η μουσική μετατρέπεται σε χρώμα και το χρώμα ξανά σε μουσική...μαζί και ο χρόνος μοιάζει να διαστέλεται και να συστέλεται ξανά. Με τον ίδιο τρόπο αλλά πλέον με πιο σύγχρονη ενορχήστρωση ως Κεφάλαιο 24 συνεχίζουν να δημιουργούν καταπληκτική μουσική με μέσο έκφρασης τον ελληνικό στίχο χωρίς αυτό να είναι απαραίτητα περιοριστικό. Καλή ακρόαση σε αυτό το απολαυστικό άλμπουμ!

ENG: Chapter 24 are a band that was created almost 30 years ago in the provincial city of Ioannina, Greece by Antonis Livieratos and Vaggelis Boulouchtsis. They named the band after a Pink Floyd Song written by Syd Barrett - here's some info about the specific song. It would be rather hard to classify Chapter 24 into a particular music category (within the given alternative/experimental region) since they sound old-fashioned and avant-garde creating some new enthralling music. "Tin Invaders" LP is actually their first vinyl release in 1988 via Di Di Music label. This is a pioneer album oriented towards a psychedelic (so to speak) minimal synth wave, all through an experimental perspective. Starting with the instrumental "Black Baron's Theme" perhaps to be one of the best songs of this kind that you'll ever know. It's essentially a flawless specimen of psychedelic temper combined with original synthesizer composition, that is a "recipe" that applies to all nine superb songs. Similarly, the same titled "Tin Invaders" is another excellent song that proves how well Livieratos's voice matches the icy and unworldly style of Chapter 24. Nevertheless, the songs are of variable structure; sometimes there's a thrift guitar with some overflowing synth ("The Corpse", "Homecoming"), while at other times there are even more complex compositions such as the semi-paranoiac "Alcohol Mind", the paroxysmic wordplay of "(Elec)trick Death" as well as the dark masterpiece called "Little Jack's Gun". "The Collector" isn't inferior to any other song mentioned, nor the bright instrumental entitled "Soundtrack" that concludes this fine LP. By the way, "Soundtrack" is indeed music from an actual short film.
Apparently, "Tin Invaders" is a retardant explosive mechanism of music that challenges the listener and satisfies him at the same time. Psychedelically speaking, this music becomes colour and then turns to music again, whereas Time dilates and contracts again and so on...
Chapter 24 are now called Kefalaio 24 [Greek for Chapter 24], express themselves through greek verse and that's by no means a limitation. They've never ceased to astonish with new music perspective. We wish you an enjoyable listening to this one!

Exploiting the Prophets: Code of Coincidence LP 1984, plus The Thaw mini LP 1985, Eksakt Records

Ξεκινάμε το 2013 με τις καλύτερες ευχές για όλους και όλες και κάπως αργοπορημένα, αλλά τι πειράζει αφού είμαστε ακόμα εδώ...Δεν κρύβουμε την αδυναμία μας για την Ολλανδική new wave/post punk σκηνή και ξεκινάμε την πρώτη ανάρτηση της χρονιάς με ένα συγκρότημα από εκεί. Καιρό τώρα σκεφτόμαστε να κάνουμε ένα μακροσκελές αφιέρωμα σε μουσικές από αυτά τα μέρη και ακόμα επεξεργαζόμαστε πως θα γίνει και τι θα περιλαμβάνει.
Το σχήμα για το οποίο θα μιλήσουμε σήμερα είναι οι Exploiting the Prophets και δεν είναι από αυτά που συναντά κανείς πολύ συχνά στο διαδίκτυο, δηλαδή δεν υπάρχουν αρκετές πληροφορίες. Για την ιστορία μόνο θα αναφέρουμε πως φτιάχτηκαν στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1980 στην πόλη Tilburg και αρχικά λεγόντουσαν Exploiting the Profits. Έχουν τρεις κυκλοφορίες στο ανεξάρτητο Ολλανδικό label Eksakt Records (Miners of Muzo, Soviet Sex, κτλ) η πρώτη από αυτές σε κασσέτα με τίτλο "Thin King Man" (1983). Ακολούθησε το LP "Code of Coincidence" (1984) και τέλος το e.p. "The Thaw" (1985). Τις πληροφορίες που ήδη αναφέραμε τις συλλέξαμε από το discogs και από το blog του phoenix hairpins. Στο εν λόγω blog υπάρχουν και οι δύο κυκλοφορίες για κατέβασμα, όμως η σημερινή μας ανάρτηση επιπλέον προσφέρει την πρώτη τους κυκλοφορία και τις άλλες δύο σε ασύγκριτα καλύτερη ποιότητα.
Πάμε στο προκείμενο όμως... Οι Exploiting the Prophets είναι από τα σχήματα των οποίων τη μουσική την αγαπάς γιατί σου δίνει την αίσθηση και την χαρά πως ανακαλύπτεις εξ' αρχής την καλή μουσική με την ελπίδα πως υπάρχουν και άλλες συναρπαστικές μουσικές κάπου εκεί έξω. Το e.p. "The Thaw" του 1985 είναι εμφανώς πιο σκοτεινό και πιο βατό σε σχέση με το άλμπουμ "Code of Coincidence" του 1984, το οποίο έχει κάποιους πειραματισμούς και είναι πιο "δύσκολο". Όμως σας εγγυώμαστε πως θα τα αγαπήσετε γιατί προσφέρουν άλλη μια πτυχή της new wave/post punk μουσικής την οποία συχνά ξεχνάμε, ατόφια δημιουργία και έμπνευση στην αφετηρία τους, καθώς οι δύο αυτές κυκλοφορίες μοιάζουν σαν να αλληλοσυμπληρώνονται.
Τραγούδια όπως τα "Raymond's Room", "All of It...For Life", "Laschy", "Quiver Circle", "Glow Reality Shock Sigh" κ.α., βασίζεσαι πως πάντα θα σε εκπλήσσουν και σε αυτό δεν πρόκειται να σε απογοητεύσουν.

ENG: We're starting 2013 with our best wishes for all of you. Ok, we're late again but what does it matter anyway? We're still around...
By now you've realised that we have a soft spot for Dutch new wave/post punk, so we prefer to start with a Dutch group. It's been a while now that we consider doing a tribute to bands and albums from that country; still we don't know how or what it will include.
The band that we're bringing you today is called Exploiting the Prophets. Not very often mentioned around the net and not much to be found about them. We're only going to say that they come from the town of Tilburg and that they were originally named Exploiting the Profits. They have had three releases on Eksakt Records (Miners of Muzo, Soviet Sex, etc) of which the first one was on tape, entitled "Thin King Man" in 1983. Then the LP "Code of Coincidence" followed in 1984 and finally the mini LP "The Thaw" came out in 1985. We should give credit for our sources about the info mentioned above; EtP discography on Discogs and an older post about the two latter releases on Phoenix Hairpins blog which were extremely helpful. We chose to upload a fresh rip of the two vinyl releases plus a 128 kbps rip of the "Thin King Man" tape found on soulseek.
Exploiting the Prophets are one of those bands whose style you gotta love because it gives you the joy of re-discovering good music and at the same time it gives you the hope that there are still more good tunes out there that you haven't discovered yet. From the two viny releases, "The Thaw" mLP has got a darker music style, whereas the "Code of Coincidence" contains some experimentations, therefore it is less direct. Nevertheless, we guarantee that you will love them both as they illustrate the birth of pure creativity and inspiration, not to mention that both vinyl releases are actually two pieces that complete each other as in a jigsaw puzzle.
Songs like "Raymond's Room", "All of It...For Life", "Laschy", "Quiver Circle", "Glow Reality Shock Sigh" and more, are the kind that take you by surprise every single time and never disappoint you.

Drowning Pool: Drowning Pool LP 1987, Scarface Charley Records plus Nierika mini-LP 1988, Viva Records

Για το τέλος του 2012 είπαμε να ανεβάσουμε κάτι εξαιρετικό στο οποίο είχαμε αναφερθεί απλώς επιγραμματικά όταν ανεβάσαμε την συλλογή "The Fundamental Hymnal" της Fundamental Records. Ο λόγος γίνεται για το συγκρότημα των Drowning Pool από το Los Angeles των Η.Π.Α., γνωστό σε πολλούς που έχουν εντρυφήσει από καιρό στην ανεξάρτητη indie σκηνή των Η.Π.Α., αλλά και τα παρεμφερή σχήματα των Savage Republic, Red Temple Spirits, BPeople, Toiling Midgets, κ.α.. Τα "Drowning Pool" του 1987 και το "Nierika" mini-LP του 1988 θα είναι -μάλλον- το τελευταίο post για το 2012. Οι Drowning Pool κατέχουν μια ξεχωριστή θέση στις μουσικές που μας αρέσουν και θεωρούμε πως είναι ένα από τα συγκροτήματα που το αγαπήσαμε κυρίως για την ιδιαίτερη μουσική του αλλά και την αίσθηση/ατμόσφαιρα που αποπνέει κάθε τους τραγούδι ξεχωριστά. Αν θυμάστε το instrumental "Black Baghdad" από τη συλλογή που προαναφέραμε έχει ένα ιδιαίτερο και μυσταγωγικό χαρακτήρα. Εν ολίγοις, η μουσική των Drowning Pool είναι ένα αμάλγαμα διαφορετικών ήχων και επιρροών που θα μπορούσε να ξεκινά από παγανιστικούς ύμνους αυτόχθονων Αμερικανικών φυλών, να δανείζεται το στυλ και το ηχόχρωμα της post punk και πειραματικής ανεξάρτητης new wave της δεκαετίας του 80, αλλά και θα μπορούσε εν τέλει να ξεκινά κάτι ολότελα καινούργιο και ολόφρεσκο. Το καλό με την Αμερικάνικη σκηνή είναι πως ποτέ δεν παύει να εκπλήσσει, πάντα βρίσκεται ένα βήμα μπροστά με νέους και πάντα γνώριμους ήχους. Όπως προείπαμε, η μουσική των D.P. αποπνέει ένα μυσταγωγικό και ταυτόχρονα ηχητικά πλούσιο χαρακτήρα, θα λέγαμε παρόμοιο με τα συγκροτήματα της 4AD Records και πιο κοντά στους δραματικούς και σκοτεινούς Cindytalk.

Κατ' αρχήν, οι D.P. αφού κυκλοφόρησαν κάποιες κασσέτες (υλικό εκ των οποίων αποτελείται το ημιεπίσημο "Untitled" LP-εναλλακτικός τίτλος "Bloody Boy" [1986]), στη συνέχεια κυκλοφόρησαν το ομώνυμο "Drowning Pool" LP [1987] ή όπως αλλιώς είναι γνωστό "The Green Album". Ακολουθούν τα "Nierika" mini LP [1988] και το "Aphonia" LP [1989]. Κάπου στο 1987 παρεμβάλλεται και η διπλή συλλογή "Satori" που περιέχει πρώιμα κομμάτια και αρκετά άλλα από τις δύο κυκλοφορίες του 1987 και 1988. Προς το παρόν θα επικεντρωθούμε στα "Drowning Pool" και "Nierika" που έχουμε στην κατοχή μας.
Στο ομώνυμο άλμπουμ του 1987 υπάρχουν κάποια από τα καλύτερα κομμάτια τους. Στ' αλήθεια, μπορεί να χαρακτηρίσει κανείς το "Romans" το λιγότερο επικό, το "What of Singing Birds" αιθέριο και μελωδικό και το "Open Palms" σπαρακτικό - και τα τρία αυτά κομμάτια υπερβαίνουν τα υλικά όρια του δίσκου και ασυνείδητα μεταφέρουν την μουσική των D.P. σε ένα διαφορετικό, απόκοσμο επίπεδο. Το παράξενο "Broken Jawed Woman Sings" φέρνει στο νου τελετές αυτόχθονων φυλών της Αμερικής και συνδυασμό φωνητικών ασκήσεων, παρακάτω το "Edith, Hold Out Your Hand" ίπταται αιθέριο στα ίδια σκοτεινά και σχεδόν ψυχεδελικά μονοπάτια και το "Paradise Found" κινείται στην ίδια δραματική φλέβα όπως το "Open Palms". Τα υπόλοιπα κομμάτια είναι εξίσου σημαντικά αφού διατηρούν την ενότητα του δίσκου σε αυτό το σκοτεινό και παράδοξα αισιόδοξο concept. Στην τελειότητα αυτού του απόκοσμου και υγρού concept περαιτέρω συντελούν και τα αιθέρια φωνητικά (αλλά και οι στίχοι) του Andrew Crane και η άψογη ενορχήστρωση των Adam Elesh στην κιθάρα, Brett Smith στο μπάσσο και Jon Thomas στα τύμπανα.
Ομοίως, στο mini-LP "Nierika" εξακολουθεί να καλλιεργείται η ίδια ονειρική ατμόσφαιρα, αρχικά με το ορχηστρικό "House of Dreams" και έπειτα με το "Trueblood" το οποίο ο ήχος του μπάσσου ξεχωρίζει και μαζί με τις γνώριμες echo/chorus κιθάρες δίνει την τέλεια αίσθηση του βάθους, ενώ διαμέσω του "Shadows" στρώνει το δρόμο για το επίσης επικό επτάλεπτο "Nierika", ένα κομμάτι που δεν αποκαλύπτεται στο πρώτο άκουσμα, χρειάζεται να το ξανακούσετε. Εξαιρετική η δουλειά στο μπάσσο και τις κιθάρες, στο γνώριμο ατμοσφαιρικό ύφος, κατά τι λιγότερο απόκοσμο και περισσότερο γήινο σε προσέγγιση. Προσέξτε πως εξελίσσεται και κλιμακώνεται το κομμάτι από το τρίτο λεπτό και μετά, είναι καταπληκτικό.
Ελπίζουμε πως η ανάρτηση αυτή θα δώσει μια ολοκληρωμένη εικόνα των Drowning Pool κυρίως σε αυτούς που είναι ακόμα ανυποψίαστοι για αυτή τη μουσική. Πράγματι, οι D.P. ενσωματώνουν τόσα διαφορετικά μουσικά ακούσματα που είναι λογικό να αρέσουν σε πολύ κόσμο αλλά και να καταπλήξουν εξίσου αρκετό. Μακάρι η μουσική να έκλεινε τις πληγές που άφησε το 2012, μακάρι να ήταν τόσο εύκολο, όμως πιστεύουμε πως αφήνουμε για πάντα πίσω αυτή την δύστροπη και δίσεκτη χρονική περίοδο και την ξορκίζουμε με μουσική κοιτώντας το άγνωστο μέλλον με αισιοδοξία. Άραγε θα μάθουμε κάτι από το παρελθόν;
Θα δείξει...θα τα πούμε με το καλό τις πρώτες ημέρες του 2013. Να είστε καλά.

Drowning Pool: Nierika mini-LP (Viva Records-1988)

ENG: We have chosen to post some extraordinary music for the end of 2012. We had already referred to the band hosted today when we posted "The Fundamental Hymnal" compilation. We are talking about the Drowning Pool from Los Angeles, U.S.A. who are definitely among the favourites of those who are already into the American alternative-indie music scene and other similar bands such as Savage Republic, Red Temple Spirits, BPeople, Toiling Midgets and more. It seems that Drowning Pool's "Drowning Pool" LP (1987) and "Nierika" mini-LP (1988) will be our very last post for 2012. We have a soft spot for Drowning Pool's music and that is because of their unique music style and the sense of atmosphere that each and every song reveals. Recall the song from "The Fundamental Hymnal" compilation we mentioned above, entitled "Black Baghdad", it has this unique and ceremonial style which is the exact trademark sound of Drowning Pool. In short, their music is an amalgam of various sounds and influences that could possibly involve tribe-like pagan-ceremonial chants, and/or the coloursound of the post punk and experimental new wave scene of the 80s, and/or altogether something entirely new and innovating. We find that the specific American indie scene is always one step ahead and keeps surprising us with both new and somewhat familiar sounds. As we have already mentioned, D.P.'s music retains a sacramental and atmospheric quality very similar to the 4AD Records set of groups; our personal estimation is that they are closer to Cindytalk.
To begin with, D.P. had already produced a few tapes and an early "Untitled" LP also known as "Bloody Boy" [1986] by the time they released their proper full-length "Drowning Pool" LP in 1987. It is commonly known as "The Green Album" because of its distinctive deep green colour on the cover - along with a photo of a spiral staircase. Then "Nierika" mini-LP (1988) followed, as well as the instrumental LP "Aphonia" (1989). The exceptional double LP compilation "Satori" came out around 1987 comprising of early releases as well as songs from "Drowning Pool" LP and "Nierika" mini-LP. For the time being we have focused on those two releases ("Drowning Pool" and "Nierika") whose vinyl versions we possess.
In the same-titled LP of 1987 we find some of their best songs ever, it's a fact that it is a real gem. How else can one classify songs such as "Romans", being no less than an epic; songs like the ethereal and lyrical "What of Singing Birds" and the agonizing "Open Palms". Εspecially those three tracks seem to transcend the music out of the material restrictions of vinyl into a totally outworldly level. Next, the strange "Broken Jawed Woman Sings" brings some tribal chants to mind along with some voice exercises. Furthermore, "Edith, Hold Out Your Hands" floats like an ethereal being in obscure, almost psychedelic fumes. Last but not least, "Paradise Found" draws into the same dramatical vein as "Open Palms". The rest of the songs we don't mention here are equally as important as far as the wholeness of the record is concerned - regarding this dark and paradoxically optimistic theme. What perfects this eerie and "humid" concept is also the great vocals (and lyrics, too) provided by Andrew Crane as well as the excellent atmospheric arrangement by Adam Elesh (guitar), Brett Smith (bass) and Jon Thomas (drums).
Subsequently, the same oneiric atmosphere applies to the mini-LP "Nierika"as well. At first with the instrumental "House of Dreams", then with "Trueblood" on which the bass alligns perfectly with the echo/chorus guitar, thus, incorporating greater sound depth. Then, "Shadows" paves the way for the outstanding seven minute epic "Nierika", a song that doesn't reveal itself right away, but takes its time as it incorporates excellent guitar arrangement and bass playing skills, somehow in less eerie yet more melodic and earthly approach. Pay attention on how the song climaxes amazingly from the third minute on.
We hope that this post will offer a fuller taste of Drowning Pool, especially to those who are still unaware of this music. It's a fact that D.P. incorporate so many different elements and as a consequence they are a favourite band to many, however they never cease to astonish us.
We wish that music would be able to heal the wounds of the previous year - if only it were so easy... We believe that since we're leaving this wayward leap year behind and exorcising it with more music, we're still having our minds set towards the unknown tomorrow in an optimistic manner. Are we ever going to learn from the past?

Magic de Spell: A Body in A Snare, 1983 Music Box

Οι Magic de Spell της εποχής 1980-1985 είναι ίσως ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά σχήματα στο χώρο της Ελληνικής ανεξάρτητης σκηνής. Είχαμε παλιότερα παρουσιάσει τη συλλογή της Music Box "The Best and the Rest" που περιέχει αρκετά ακυκλοφόρητα τραγούδια τους και υποσχεθήκαμε πως κάποια στιγμή θα κάναμε ένα αφιέρωμα στην υπόλοιπη διαθέσιμη δισκογραφία. Έτσι, αρχίζουμε από το ντεμπούτο "A Body in A Snare" το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε τον Ιανουάριο του 1983 επίσης στην Music Box. Αν εξαιρέσει κανείς την φτωχή παραγωγή και την ιδιότυπη προφορά της Αγγλικής γλώσσας δηλαδή τα κύρια αρνητικά χαρακτηριστικά όλων των Ελληνικών συγκροτημάτων εκείνης της περιόδου, τα οκτώ κομμάτια του "A Body in A Snare" θα μπορούσαν άνετα να χαρακτηριστούν ως κλασικά, ανυπέρβλητα και καινοτόμα. Το πρώτο αυτό άλμπουμ συγκαταλέγεται σε αυτά που εμείς εδώ στα 10.000 Μάτια θεωρούμε πως πρέπει να επανεκδοθούν/επανακυκλοφορήσουν άμεσα.

Στο "A Body in A Snare" δεν περισσεύει κανένα από αυτά τα οκτώ σπαρταριστά κομμάτια. Από τις πρώτες κιόλας νότες του καθίσταται γνωστό πως οι Magic de Spell μοιάζουν να αποκηρρύσουν το πρόσφατο punk παρελθόν και αγκαλιάζουν το -τότε πρωτόγνωρο- new wave/minimal synth είδος - είναι προφανείς οι επιρροές των O.M.D., Ultravox, κ.α. συγκροτημάτων της εποχής (πράγμα που φάνηκε περισσότερο αργότερα στο τρίτο LP "Cpt. Blind"). Οι λιτές συνθέσεις δένουν άψογα με τα ψυχρά-αποστασιοποιημένα φωνητικά του τραγουδιστή Μιχάλη Ασλάνογλου. Επίσης, οι στίχοι μοιάζουν και αυτοί να είναι στο πνεύμα της εποχής (1982-1983) με νωπά τα ίχνη της πάνκ αμφισβήτησης κυρίως στα "Brainwash" και "Religion Uber Alles". Εξαιρετική δε είναι και η επανεκτέλεση του "Poor Johnny's Lonely Blues" σαφώς διαφοροποιημένη από αυτήν στο 7'' e.p. "Nightmare" του 1981. Τέλος, τα "Faces", "(And the Burned) Puppet" και "A Body in A Snare" που αφορούν περισσότερο προσωπικές/υπαρξιακές αναζητήσεις, καθιστούν αυτόν το δίσκο αξεπέραστο για τους Magic de Spell, καθώς πρόκειται για μερικά από τα καλύτερα και πιο αλησμόνητα τραγούδια της πρώτης περιόδου τους. Ποιός στ' αλήθεια μπορεί να ξεχάσει στίχο σαν τον "I wanna live for you, I wanna die for me, so many reasons to be fond of lunatics" [από το "(And the Burned) Puppet"]. 'Οπως και να έχει πάντως, ακριβώς 30 χρόνια μετά την κυκλοφορία αυτού του δίσκου, και ενώ ο χρόνος έχει παρασύρει τα πάντα στο πέρασμα του, κάποια άλμπουμ σαν το "A Body in A Snare" επιμένουν να μην απογοητεύουν. ENG: Magic de Spell of the early 80s period may have been one of the most important bands of the Greek Alternative scene. In the past we had presented a compilation of their work ("The Best and the Rest") which was comprised of well-known songs as well as a few unreleased ones. Back then we promised that we would pay homage to the available discography (the 3 first LPs) in due time. And that is exactly what we're doing, starting with the debut LP "A Body in A Snare" which was released in January 1983 via Music Box label. Despite of the poor sound production and the peculiar English accent, which by the way were the two main negative characteristics of almost all the Greek bands of the period, the eight songs of the "A Body in A Snare" LP could have been placed among the new wave classics, as they are unexcelled and innovative, at the same time. For these reasons, that first album is included among the LPs we believe that should be reissued/re-released sometime soon.
In the "A Body in A Snare" LP there aren't any songs to be left aside. It is made known even from the first tunes that Magic de Spell have renounced their former 'punk' identity, embracing the novelty of (then) new wave/minimal synth genre. Their music has obviously been influenced by the likes of O.M.D., Ultravox, Fad Gadget, just to mention a few. Moreover, these distinct influences are even more evident in the "Cpt. Blind" LP. Anyway, the songs of "A Body in A Snare" are excellent in their doric and austere structure invigorated by Mihalis Aslanoglou's cold and detached singing. Also, the lyric themes are more or less in the spirit of the period still ifluenced by the punk attitude, most vividly expressed in "Brainwash" and "Religion Uber Alles". Also, there's a new outstanding version of "Poor Johnny's Lonely Blues" a lot different from the one that was in "Nightmare" 7'' e.p. of 1981. Additionally, there are some more great tunes: "Faces", "(And the Burned) Puppet" and "A Body in A Snare"; both of them touch personal and existential themes. All the above have made this record insuperable even for Magic de Spell, as it contains some of the most memorable songs of that early period. Who can really forget this line: "I wanna live for you, I wanna die for me, so many reasons to be fond of lunatics" [from "(And the Burned) Puppet"]? All in all, 30 years have passed since the release of this gem and time has taken away everything within its pass, nevetheless, certain LPs like "A Body in A Snare" still sound as great and fresh, never disappointing. Have a good listening to this one!

Trespass: Strange Times 1988, RCA-BMG [plus some more]

Η δεκαετία του 80 ήταν οπωσδήποτε μια παράξενη εποχή και οι Trespass το είχαν αντιληφθεί και ονόμασαν το μοναδικό τους άλμπουμ "Strange Times" προς τιμή εκείνων των παράξενων καιρών. Καθώς γράφουμε την παρουσίαση του δίσκου των Trespass συνειδητοποιούμε ότι ο τίτλος ταιριάζει απόλυτα στο παρόν. Πως αλλιώς να περιγράψει κανείς το παρόν της Ελλάδας σε Κρίση πολλών επιπέδων; Από τη μία η οικονομική κρίση την οποία η κυβέρνηση αντιμετωπίζει με περισσότερη λιτότητα και ο λαός υποφέρει από την φτώχεια και την εξαθλίωση, ενώ από την άλλη μια σκοτεινή ναζιστική οργάνωση με λαμπερό όνομα εκμεταλλεύεται τη δυσχερή οικονομική κατάσταση, την ξενοφοβία... Παράξενοι Καιροί στ' αλήθεια! Λίγες φορές θα μας ακούσετε να αναφερόμαστε σε πολιτικά θέματα μέσα από τα 10.000 Μάτια, όμως μας συνεπαίρνει το ορμητικό ρεύμα των καιρών. Αλλά ας πάμε πίσω στη μουσική των Trespass.

Οι Trespass είναι η φυσική συνέχεια του θρυλικού new wave/minimal synth σχήματος Alive She Died οι οποίοι έτυχαν cult αναγνώρισης στα Αθηναϊκά club στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του  '80 και δυστυχώς το μόνο που κυκλοφόρησαν ήταν μία κασέτα με τίτλο "Viva Voce" (1985) την οποία μπορείτε να κατεβάσετε εδώ. Οι Alive She Died μετονομάστηκαν σε Trespass όπου παρέμεινε η τραγουδίστρια Δάφνη Γερογιάννη και ο Ξενοφώντας Ξένιος στην κιθάρα και τα πλήκτρα, πλαισιωμένοι από τους Γιώργο Μπουσούνη (πλήκτρα), Άρη Ζαράκα (κιθάρα) και Γιώργο Κολλιόπουλο (τύμπανα). Οι Trespass έχουν λίγα κοινά στοιχεία με τους Alive She Died, αφού η συνθετική προσέγγισή τους είναι πιο mainstream. Όμως το αποτέλεσμα δεν είναι καθόλου απογοητευτικό αν κρίνει κανείς από τις καλοδουλεμένες συνθέσεις αλλά και την πάντα αισθησιακή φωνή της Δάφνης Γερογιάννη - η οποία πολύ αργότερα συμμετείχε στο ηλεκτρονικό σχήμα των Atria. Επιπλέον, οι Trespass είναι το 2ο Ελληνικό συγκρότημα μετά τους Λευκή Συμφωνία που εμφανίστηκαν με video-clip στο κανάλι MTV το 1990. Συνολικά το LP έχει αρκετά αξιόλογα κομμάτια τα οποία κινούνται σε ύφος new wave με ελαφρές progressive rock παρεκλίσεις ("The Day After the Battle"). Ξεχωρίζει το "Strange Times" (του οποίου το video-clip παίχτηκε από το MTV), καθώς και τα "Queen of Dreams", "Colours of Love", "Ultimate Cause" και οπωσδήποτε το νοσταλγικό "Last Day of Schools" το οποίο είναι ένα από τα κομμάτια που είχαν γράψει ως Alive She Died. Μαζί με το άλμπουμ έχουμε συμπεριλάβει ένα bootleg ντοκουμέντο των Trespass επί της σκηνής και ένα e.p. τους με τίτλο "Moving Sound" από το 1987-στο ίδιο αρχείο. Ουσιαστικά, το "Moving Sound" είναι παλιότερη εκτέλεση του "Colours of Love". Ευχόμαστε καλή ακρόαση!!



Trespass: Strange Times (RCA-BMG, 1988)

ENG: Definitely, the 80s were a strange era and having realised that, Trespass named their sole LP "Strange Times" to honour that period. Upon writing thε review of the aforementioned LP we happen to realise that the present times are also strange times. The title fits perfectly to Greece's situation today. How else one can describe present time Greece going through a multilevel Crisis? One one hand, there's the economic recess treated with austerity measures and memorandums (??) by a government that is deaf towards the needs of a people who suffers, being on the verge of poverty. On the other hand, there's a dark nazi organisation with a shiny name that has taken advantage of the difficult situation including xenophobia (perhaps an opportunity?) claiming the fruits... These are Strange Times, indeed. This is one of the few times that you might read politic talk in 10.000 Eyes, but what can we do? We are impulsed by the raging stream of our times. But let us go back to the music of Trespass.
Trespass are the natural continuation of the legendary new wave/minimal synth band called Alive She Died who enjoyed cult recognition during the mid-80s around the Athenian clubs. Alive She Died had only one (self) release on tape entitled "Viva Voce" in 1985 (if you are interested, you may find it here). Daphne Gerogianni (voice) and Xenophon Xenios (guitar, keyboards) transformed Alive She Died into Trespass with the help of Giorgos Boussounis (keyboards), Aris Zarakas (guitars) and Giorgos Kolliopoulos on drums. The music of Trespass doesn't really have too much in common with that of Alive She Died due to the fact that Trespass have a more mainstream approach. Nevertheless, the outcome isn't disappointing at all judging from the well-worked compositions and the -always sensual- voice of Daphne (who eventuall in the late 90s formed the electronic duo Atria). By the way, Trespass were the second Greek group whose video-clip was broadcast on MTV in 1990 (Lefki Symfonia were the first one). Overall, the LP "Strange Times" has some notable new wave songs with minor progressive rock deviation ("The Day After the Battle"). Also, some others that stand out are "Strange Times" (their one and only MTV appearance), "Queen of Dreams", "Colour of Love", "Ultimate Cause" and definitely "The Last Day of Schools" which was originally an Alive She Died demo song. We have included a bootleg recording of Trespass on stage plus "Moving Sound" ep from 1987 in the same file with the LP. For the record, "Moving Sound" is actually the older version of "Colours of Love". Have a good listening to those ones!

Rain Gods: In Some Waking Hour 1986, Thin Sliced Records

Σήμερα έχουμε άλλο ένα άλμπουμ το οποίο μας κέντρισε πολύ το ενδιαφέρον γιατί είναι, όπως θα δείτε και εσείς, γεμάτο ποικιλία και ενδιαφέρουσες μουσικές παρεκκλίσεις. Όλα αυτά συμβαίνουν μέσα στο "In Some Waking Hour", το πρώτο άλμπουμ των Βρετανών Rain Gods. Δυστυχώς στάθηκε αδύνατο να βρούμε ο,τιδήποτε σχετικά με τους Rain Gods, εκτός από την δισκογραφία τους στο discogs. Επιπλέον, τα μέλη του γκρούπ δεν έχουν πραγματικά ονόματα αλλά ψευδώνυμα, πράγμα που τους κάνει μεγαλύτερο μυστήριο. Συνολικά, το "In Some Waking Hour" μας έκανε εντύπωση για τον τρόπο που τα -εκ πρώτης όψεως- διαφορετικά κομμάτια δένουν ως σύνολο, αλλά και πως το κάθε ένα από αυτά είναι ένα άρτιο δείγμα μουσικής τελειότητας που συνδυάζει την εμπορική αναγνωρισιμότητα μαζί με τον πειραματισμό. Αν και τα πιο πολλά κομμάτια είναι χτισμένα με απλό τρόπο διατηρούν ένα "βελούδινο" σχεδόν ποπ χαρακτήρα ("Place of My Own", "Come Back", "13th Floor", "Executioner") κάποια άλλα συνδυάζουν και indie/alternative επιρροές και προσθήκες όπως το "Time to Stop Crying" και το φαινομενικά χαοτικό "Cockroach Chorus Rag". Τέλος, τα "Insect Sun" και "Somnambulist" δείχνουν μια διαφορετική -avant garde- θα λέγαμε τάση. Ειδικά το "Somnambulist" εξελίσσεται σε ένα πανέμορφο και εντυπωσιακό σκοτεινό διαμάντι, σχεδόν....υπνωτικό. Καλή ακρόαση σε όσους επιλέξουν να κατεβάσουν αυτό το άλμπουμ. Επίσης, αν γνωρίζετε κάτι για τους Rain Gods, θα μας ενδιέφερε αρκετά.

ENG: Another peculiar album is being presented today! This LP has piqued our curiosity because of its interesting musical variety and deviations. All the above take place in the LP "In Some Waking Hour" by a British group called Rain Gods. We weren't able to find anything about them except for a discogs entry. All we know about the group members are their pseudonyms mentioned in the back cover. Needless to say, this makes them a greater mystery. What is altogether impressing and intriguing about "In Some Waking Hour" LP is that the seemingly variable in style set of songs actually works together quite well. Also, each and every one of those songs is a fine specimen of music perfection towards the direction of commercial recognition and experimentalism at the same time. While most of the songs are simply built, they maintain a rather "velvety" character ("Place of My Own", "Come Back", "13th Floor", "Executioner") and at the same time they combine certain indie/alternative influences mostly in "Time to Stop Crying" and the seemingly chaotic "Cockroach Chorus Rag". Finally, "Insect Sun" and "Somnambulist" seem to draw towards an avant-gard-ish direction. Especially "Somnambulist" evolves into a beautiful and impressive dark highlight, almost soporific. Have a good listening to those who choose to download this one. Also, if anyone happens to possess extra knowledge about Rain Gods, we would be very interested in finding out more.

De Div: Europa Is Hier 1982 plus Pasodoble cassette 1983, both Plexus Holland

Τους De Div από την Ολλανδία τους είχαμε πρωτοαναφέρει το καλοκαίρι του 2011 όταν αναρτήσαμε δύο κυκλοφορίες "Stap Voor Stap" (1981) και "Open Zee" (1984). Σήμερα και πάλι με τη ευγενική χορηγία του "The Unspeakable" ανεβάζουμε το πρώτο τους μεγάλο άλμπουμ με τίτλο "Europa Is Hier" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1982 αμέσως μετά το πρώτο e.p. "Stap Voor Stap". Το "Europa Is Hier" είναι πιστά χτισμένο στον χαρακτηριστικό ήχο των De Div με περίτεχνα κιθάριστικά riff και μινιμαλιστικές μελωδίες που αλληλοσυμπληρώνονται κάτω από μια σταθερή rhythm section. Τα φωνητικά είναι επίσης ταιριαστά - πιστεύουμε πως τα Ολλανδικά είναι κατάλληλα για αυτή τη μουσική. Επιπλέον, το σαξόφωνο εμπλουτίζει αυτές τις μελωδίες και τους προσδίδει νωχελικές αποχρώσεις. Οι κιθάρες είναι τόσο ευρηματικές και πολυποίκιλες, δεν μπορείς ποτέ να τις βαρεθείς. Οπωσδήποτε κάποια κομμάτια ξεχωρίζουν με το πρώτο άκουσμα. Το "Insekticide" ξεκινάει το δίσκο δυναμικά και επιβλητικά με τη rhythm section σε πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο και την κιθάρα να χτίζει τις μελωδίες μία προς μία ως την κορύφωση. Πιο κάτω το "Man In De Ruit" αποπνέει ενέργεια και φρεσκάδα - απόδειξη πως η μουσική τους σήμερα δεν είναι καθόλου ξεπερασμένη. Πιο κάτω συναντάμε το ομώνυμο κομμάτι "Europa Is Hier" που επιβάλλεται στην πανέμορφη επανεκτέλεση του "Stap Voor Stap" από το πρώτο e.p., κλείνοντας την πρώτη πλευρά. Το "Lichaam Op Het Laken" παίρνει την σκυτάλη στην άλλη πλευρά με το πολύ χαρακτηριστικό και εύθραυστο παίξιμο στο μπάσσο που θυμίζει το στυλ του Mick Karn και δίνει στο κομμάτι μια πιο σκοτεινή χροιά. Στο "Tegels" συνειδητοποιείς πως τα καλά τραγούδια δεν έχουν τελειωμό - το συγκεκριμένο στηρίζεται εξίσου στην επιτακτική rhythm section και στην κιθάρα που κυριολεκτικά "ζωγραφίζει". Στη συνέχεια, το "Sa-Ha-Ra" προκαλεί ενδιαφέρον και αφήνει καλή εντύπωση. Αμέσως μετά ακολουθεί το "Guerilla", ένα από τα κομμάτια που σου μένουν απλά γιατί ο ρυθμός του είναι ακαταμάχητος (όπως το "Insekticide"). Είναι ταυτόχρονα εκρηκτικό και συγκρατημένο, σε παρασύρει στο ρυθμό του, με κατάλληλα ηχητικά εφφέ σε όλη του την διάρκεια. Πράγματι ένα κλείσιμο αντάξιο ενός καταπληκτικού δίσκου.

Υστερόγραφο: Επειδή το υλικό των De Div είναι σχετικά δύσκολο να βρεθεί και πολλά από τα blog που φιλοξενούσαν αναρτήσεις σχετικές με τους De Div είτε έχουν κλείσει, είτε οι σύνδεσμοι σε αυτά πλέον δεν λειτουργούν, συμπεριλαμβάνουμε στο αρχείο και μια από τις πρώτες τους κασέτες με τίτλο "Pasodoble" κυκλοφορίας 1983, όπου μπορείτε να ακούσετε μια διαφορετική εκτέλεση του "Man In De Ruit" με τίτλο "Mann Gegenuber Mich", αλλά και άλλες εκτελέσεις στα "Sa-Ha-Ra", και "Guerilla". Η κασέτα αυτή έχει πειραματικό προσανατολισμό, επιπλέον περιέχει αρκετά ακυκλοφόρητα τραγούδια των De Div. Απολαύστε την καλή μουσική τους, επιμένουμε σε αυτούς, άλλωστε το αξίζουν!

ENG: The first time we referred to De Div from Holland it was the summer of 2011, posting two of their releases "Stap Voor Stap" (1981) and "Open Zee" (1984). Today and again with "The Unspeakeable's" sponsorhip we upload their first LP entitled "Europa Is Hier" (Europe is Here) released in 1982 right after their first e.p. "Stap Voor Stap". To begin with, the LP "Europa Is Hier" is faithfully built upon the distinct style of the band; with eloquent quitar tunes and minimal riffs all supported by the steadiness of a rhythm section. Also, the vocals couldn't be more appropriate - after all Dutch are quite suitable for De Div's music, not to mention it's their mother tongue. In addition to that, the saxophone enriches those tunes in an indolent yet charming way. As for the ingenious and varicoloured quitar fill-ins, you can't forget those. "Insekticide" sets off in a dynamic and imposing way, totally based on the rhythm section while the guitar builds up the climax. Furthermore, "Man In De Ruit" has a spirit of energy and freshness with it, hence, their music hasn't been out of date yet. Later on, the same-titled song "Europa Is Hier" - another great tune which blends in perfectly with the beautiful reprise of "Stap Voor Stap" from their first e.p.

The second side sets off with "Lichaam Op Het Laken"; its distinctive and fragile bass lines are reminiscent of Mick Karn, giving the song a darker approach. By the time you reach "Tegels" that means some more imperative bass and memorable guirar lines, you realise that this LP is crawling with outstanding compositions. "Sa-ha-ra" comes next and is an interesting effort, too. Last but not least comes the little gem "Guerilla". "Guerilla" is both dynamic and restrained which stays with and lures you into the its irresistable rhythm. It becomes even more compelling with the extra sound effects throughout. Indeed, an outstanding closing song.
Post Script.: Most of De Div's material posted around the net isn't there anymore, including "Pasodoble" a cassette released in 1983 which contains early and unreleased material of experimental nature. We have included a rip of "Pasodoble" we caught on soulseek, so you can enjoy a different version of "Man In De Ruit" entitled "Mann Gegenuber Mich" plus some intriguing versions of "Sa-ha-ra" and "Guerilla". The You And What Army Faction: Fixx cdr Self-release 2009 + Vent e.p., 2012 More Mars + Silk 7'', GAB Productions 2012

Σήμερα θα ασχοληθούμε με ένα καινούργιο συγκρότημα, πράγμα που δεν κάνουμε συχνά μέσω του blog μας, αφού συνεχώς και ακαταπαύστως βρισκόμαστε στο παρελθόν. Αφού λάβαμε το ενημερωτικό e-mail της ανεξάρτητης δισκογραφικής GAB Productions σχετικά με ένα νέο σχήμα τους The You And What Army Faction από την Αθήνα και τη κυκλοφορία τους σε 7'' με τίτλο "Silk". Έπειτα ακολούθησε και ένα mail του τραγουδιστή του συγκροτήματος και αναγνώστη του blog μας, που μας έκανε γνωστό ότι το σχήμα αυτό έχει κι άλλες κυκλοφορίες. Ο Dead C. (ή Raggedy Man) του οποίου το προσωπικό blog, μας έστειλε και τα links (soundcloud, bandcamp, κτλ) όπου και ακούσαμε μεγάλο μέρος από την ενδιαφέρουσα δουλειά των The You And What Army Faction. Το εν λόγω σχήμα δεν κάνει καμία εξαίρεση στις επιρροές και τις μουσικές εμπνεύσεις οι οποίες έρχονται από την σκοτεινή πλευρά του 80 και του 90. Μιλάμε για ιστορικά συγκροτήματα όπως Swans, Sonic Youth, The Fall, αλλά και τους πειραματικούς This Heat. Δεν θα αφήναμε απ' έξω τους Clock DVA, τους Cabaret Voltaire, ακόμα και τους Einsturzende Neubauten.

Όντως ο ήχος τους παραπέμπει λιγότερο ή περισσότερο στα παραπάνω συγκροτήματα. Εμείς θα τους περιγράφαμε ως πειραματικούς, σκοτεινούς και χαοτικούς, με ύφος που παραπέμπει κατευθείαν στην παράνοια της εκβιομηχανοποιημένης-απάνθρωπης καθημερινότητας. Είναι αρκετά ηλεκτρικοί ώστε να είναι φορτισμένοι και πάρα πολύ καλοί στο να δημιουργούν ατμόσφαιρα, συγκεκριμένα αυτήν της σύγχρονης παρακμής και αποσύνθεσης. Θα θέλαμε να τους δούμε στη σκηνή να δημιουργούν, και γιατί όχι, να αυτοσχεδιάζουν αποδομώντας και αναπαριστώντας εικόνες και ήχους από την καθημερινή παράνοια. Οι κυκλοφορίες τους περιλαμβάνουν το άλμπουμ "Fixx" (Νοέμβριος του 2009, self-release), μέσα στον Μάρτιο του 2012 ήρθε το e.p. "Vent" (σε cdr από την More Mars) και αργότερα τον Ιούλιο του 2012 το νεότευκτο 7-ιντσο "Silk" (από την ΓΑΒ Productions).
Το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ "Fixx" μας έκανε την μεγαλύτερη εντύπωση αφού αποτελεί και την εναρκτήρια κυκλοφορία και επαφή με το ευρύ κοινό. Στο "Fixx" διατηρούν ατόφια την "εφηβική" δυναμική και ενέργεια, όμως "προδίδουν" και τις μουσικές επιρροές τους. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, ανάμεσα στις παραπάνω συγκαταλέγονται το μπάσσο και η κιθάρα των πρώιμων Sonic Youth, τα φωνητικά και οι industrial αναζητήσεις μαζί με τα επιβλητικά φωνητικά του Michael Gira και των Swans. Μηδενός εξαιρουμένου όλα τα τραγούδια είναι χτισμένα πάνω σε ένα βασικό post punk κορμό, από όπου εξορμούν ένα προς ένα τα κλαδιά (ή πλοκάμια αν προτιμάτε) προς κάθε κατεύθυνση. Βέβαια αυτό που ακούμε εν τέλει είναι οι ίδιοι οι The You And What Army Faction που επιβάλλονται πάνω σε κάθε επιρροή και αναδύονται στην δική τους επιφάνεια... έστω και αν αυτό που περιγράφουν είναι ο βρωμερός και γλιστερός βούρκος ή ένα συναίσθημα-ορμή-παρέκκλιση από και προς την αυτοκαταστροφή. Συναισθήματα όπως η ενοχή, η ζήλεια, το μίσος έχουν την τιμητική τους στο "Fixx". Ένας κόσμος τόσο σημερινός και ταυτόχρονα βγαλμένος από τα σκοτεινά υπόγεια του Ντοστογιέβσκι, τους ιλλιγιώδεις πύργους του Κάφκα και από τα μιαρά υπόγεια του Ε. Α. Πόε αναδύεται από την πρώτη νότα. Οι ρυθμοί είναι αργοί και βασανιστικοί σαν κάτι να σέρνεται και να στοιχειώνει τη μουσική. Είναι ό,τι καλύτερο για soundtrack στον χειρότερο μας εφιάλτη, δηλαδή την πραγματικότητα. Το πρώτο άλμπουμ γιορτάζει το θάνατο και την παρακμή, άραγε να υπάρχει τίποτε πέρα από κει για τους The You And What Army Faction;
Ακούγοντας και τις πιο πρόσφατες κυκλοφορίες "Vent" και "Silk" του 2012 ανακαλύψαμε πως ναι, υπάρχει κάτι πέρα από εκεί...Καταλαβαίνει κανείς πως κάτι έχει αλλάξει στον ήχο τους και πως έχουν ωριμάσει σημαντικά, πράγμα που έχει ως αποτέλεσμα πιο οργανωμένες συνθέσεις, και προσεγμένη παραγωγή χωρίς όμως να έχει αλλάξει ουσιαστικά το σκοτεινό αντικείμενο της μουσικής τους. Επιβάλλουν ακόμα πιο ονειρικά/εφιαλτικά ηχοτοπία τα οποία στην πιο φωτεινή τους έκφανση ζωγραφίζουν με ψυχεδελικό τρόπο και με τις πιο σκοτεινές νότες αγγίζοντας την noise-industrial. Ο ήχος είναι πιο παγερός από ποτέ, εστιάζει στο απόλυτο κενό της ύπαρξης και την κατάπτωση του μοντέρνου εαυτού μας, μοιάζει με ένα υποβλητικό "θόρυβο" που εκπέμπει απευθείας από το υποσυνείδητο. Μας άρεσαν πολύ τα "When It Comes to Adultery, I Am my Own Genre" από το "Vent" και "Drag What's Left of my Body in the Mud" από το "Silk". Ελπίζουμε πως δώσαμε μια γενική εικόνα της μουσικής τους και της φιλοσοφίας που την διακατέχει, έτσι ώστε να τους ανακαλύψετε και εσείς. Δίνουμε για download μόνο τα "Fixx" και "Vent" σε ένα αρχείο, γιατί το "Silk" βρίσκεται ήδη στα δισκοπωλεία.

ENG: Today we are going to talk about a rather new band; we've never done this before, as you may've noticed we're constanly referring to the past. After receiving a newsletter from GAB Productions label about a new band from Athens called The You And What Army Faction and their brand new 7'' release entitled "Silk", we received another e-mail from the singer/leader (Raggedy Man) of the band who happens to be following our blog for sometime now. He informed us about some older releases and sent us links to soundcloud and bandcamp sites where we were able to listen to more of their interesting material. The You And What Army Faction were greatly influenced by the darkest side of the 80's and 90's music. Some of those influences include The Swans, The Sonic Youth, The Fall, This Heat, Clock DVA, Cabaret Voltaire, even Einsturzende Neubauten.
Indeed, The You And What Army Faction's music reflects on the aforementioned bands. We would describe  them as being dark, experimental, chaotic, depicting on the modern inhuman industrialised paranoia. They are so electric as long as they need to be electrified with the ability to create the atmospherics of modern social/psychological decline. We'd love to see them perform on stage, improvising, decomposing and reenacting images and sounds from everyday insanity. Except from "Silk" 7'' released on July 2012 they have also released the full length cdr "Fixx" (self-release) in November 2009 and the e.p. "Vent" (cdr on 'More Mars' label).
To be honest, the first album was a striking surprise to us because we were able to experience their early "adolescent" vitality. Their influences are coming clear throughout the whole album. Specifically, you can hear the early Sonic Youth bass style merging with the vocal style and industrial experimentations of Michael Gira and the Swans. All the songs are basic post punk with branches-extensions (or tentacles if you like) stretching towards every direction. Finally, The You And What Army Faction impose upon their influences and therefore they come up crystal clear with their own music. They still depict on the human psyche as being a slimy sludge expressing emotion-urge-deviation; hence, a two way street to self destruction. Guilt, Jealousy, Hatred are dominant throughout the album "Fixx". It looks like they have created a world similar to our present time and simultanesously very similar to the dark vaults of Dostoyevsky, the vertiginous towers of Kafka and the abhorrent vaults of E.A. Poe. In most if not all the songs, the rhythm is slow paced as if something crawls and haunts into the music. It coud be the best soundtrack for our worst nightmares; reality, that is. In a nutshell, this is what the first album about. Besides that, is there anything else further beyond for the music of The You And What Army Faction?
After listening to both releases of 2012, "Vent" and "Silk" we realised that there is more about them. Their music has evolved and matured a lot, resulting in well-arranged compositions and flawless production, however, the dark object of music remains the same.The band enforce dreamish/nightmarish soundscapes which in their brightest version seem to approach a noise/industrial style in a dark psychedelic manner. The sound is colder than before, retains focus on the absolute nothingness of our existence and the decadence of our contemporary self. Overall, it sounds as if a low level noise transmits straight from our subconscious. Some of the highlights are "When It Comes to Adultery, I Am my Own Genre" from "Vent" and "Drag What's Left of my Body in the Mud" from "Silk". We are hoping to give you a clear idea of their musical philosophy so that you can get to know their music. Since "Silk" is still being sold, we have uploaded "Fixx" and "Vent" only (one file).

The Flowers of Romance: Love Means Death 12'' e.p. 1992, Wipe Out Records

"'Ερωτας σημαίνει Θάνατος..." Με αυτή τη δήλωση ο Μ. Πούγουνας και οι Flowers of Romance ξεκίνησαν το 1992 τη δεύτερη κυκλοφορία τους ξανά μέσω της Wipe Out Records. Πρόκειται για το "Love Means Death" ένα 12-ιντσο e.p. με τρία καταπληκτικά κομμάτια. που βρίσκει τους Flowers of Romance ένα σκαλοπάτι πιο πάνω από το ντεμπούτο τους "Dorian Grey" του 1990 (ανάρτηση Ιουνίου 2012). Ήδη ακούγονται πιο ώριμοι με κατασταλαγμένο -ολόδικό- τους gothic rock ήχο και την ικανότητα να γράφουν τραγούδια-σταθμούς και ήδη έχει γίνει αλλαγή μελών αφού ο Δημήτρης Μπέης αντικατέστησε τους Πλάτωνα Παπαδημητρίου και Αχιλλέα Γερομόσχο στις κιθάρες. Η αρχή στο νέο e.p. γίνεται με ένα τραγούδι-σταθμός της gothic rock, το ομώνυμο "Love Means Death" που αποτυπώνει με ποιητικό τρόπο την ρομαντική άποψη πως ο έρωτας συνδέεται άμεσα με τον θάνατο. Ό,τι θα μπορούσε να γραφτεί σε σελίδες επί σελίδων περί αυτού, οι Flowers of Romance κατάφεραν να το πούν σε ένα τραγούδι σχεδόν 5 λεπτών. Το e.p. περιλαμβάνει άλλα δύο εξίσου δυνατά κομμάτια, εκ των οποίων το ένα είναι μια κα-τα-πλη-κτι-κή διασκευή στο πιο "μαύρο" τραγούδι που έγραψαν οι Rolling Stones, το "Paint it Black", δοσμένο με δραματική δεινότητα και μελαγχολικό τόνο. Οι διασκευές δεν είναι κάτι εύκολο, αλλά οι F.O.R. φαίνεται πως εντρύφησαν στην ουσία αυτού του κομματιού, και η συγκεκριμένη είναι ίσως η καλύτερη διασκευή που έχει γίνει από gothic rock συγκρότημα. Τέλος, το τελευταίο κομμάτι του e.p. είναι το "Autumn Kids" (βρίσκεται και στη συλλογή "Wipe Out Presents 12 Raw Greek Groups" της Wipe Out) είναι άλλο ένα διαμάντι, ένα τραγούδι που δείχνει την έμπνευση αλλά και τη ικανότητα να ολοκληρώνουν άψογες συνθέσεις. Συνολικά, το 12-ιντσο "Love Means Death" είναι μια ολοκληρωμένη (όχι σε ποσότητα, αλλά σε ποιότητα) και καλοδουλεμένη κυκλοφορία που αν μη τι άλλο προϊδεάζει τον ακροατή για την μετέπειτα δισκογραφική πορεία των Flowers of Romance. Καλή ακρόαση!

ENG: "Love Means Death..." A statement by Mike Pougounas and The Flowers of Romance that kickstarted their second release; a three song 12'' e.p. in 1992 through Wipe Out Records. The Flowers of Romance have moved a level up above 1990's "Dorian Grey" in both composition and quality terms. They have also become more mature and solidified their trade mark sound. In addition, Dimitris Beys has taken over the guitars from Platonas Papadimitriou and Achilleas Geromoschos. The outstanding song "Love Means Death" opens this e.p.with a poetic reference to the romantic idea that love is directly related to death. Pages over pages could have been written on the subject, however The F.O.R. have managed to elaborate this notion in an anthem of less than five minutes long.
Furthermore, this e.p. contains another two great songs. The first is a cover of Roling Stones' "blackest" tune, "Paint It Black", given with such dramatic skill and melancholy tone at the same time. Suppose that covering another band's song is a difficult task, but The Flowers of Romance seem to have indulged into the essence of this particular song; perhaps the best cover of "Paint It Black" made by a gothic rock band. The final song of this landmark e.p. is "Autumn Kids" which has also been included in the Wipe Out 1988 compilation "Wipe Out Presents 12 Raw Greek Groups" and it is definitely another gem that shows inspiration and mastery in putting through some flawless songs. Overall, "Love Means Death" 12'' e.p. is a full and qualitative release that absolutely presages the band's future releases. Have a good listening to this one, friends!

Jih: The Shadow to Fall 1986, Jungle Records/Breadth of Vision Records

Το "The Shadow to Fall" από τους Jih είναι ένα από τα άλμπουμ που μας έκαναν ιδιαίτερη εντύπωση και το ανακαλύψαμε μέσω των αναρτήσεων του φίλου 'bx-59cppw' στο δικό του blog από τον Ιούνιο του 2010. Τα περισσότερα link στο εν λόγω blog είναι πια ανενεργά και είπαμε να προσφέρουμε ένα φρέσκο rip. Βρήκαμε κάποιες πληροφορίες για τους Jih στο retrodundee.blogspot. Φαίνεται πως βασικός πυρήνας του συγκροτήματος είναι ο Βρετανός Grant McNally (τραγουδιστής και βασικός συνθέτης) με δορυφόρους διάφορους μουσικούς μεταξύ των άλλων και μέλη των Associates. Φαίνεται δε πως υπάρχει ακόμη στενότερη σχέση με τους προαναφερθέντες γιατί ο  McNally έχει συνεργαστεί αρκετά στενά με τον Billy MacKenzie σε τραγούδια των Associates και το αντίστροφο. Το γεγονός είναι πως οι Jih υπάρχουν από το 1983 και έχουν κυκλοφορήσει εκτός από το LP του 1986 επιπλέον τρία 12'' ep από το 1985 έως το 1988. Πάντως το "The Shadow to Fall" κάνει αίσθηση με το πρώτο άκουσμα, έχει μια φρεσκάδα σαν να γράφτηκε μόλις χθες αλλά μοιάζει επίσης σαν να βρίσκεται κρυμμένη κάποια new wave σούπερ-μπάντα πίσω από το όνομα "Jih" γιατί κάθε ένα από τα τραγούδια σίγουρα θα σας θυμίσει κάτι, ίσως συγκεκριμένο (όπως τα "Big Blue Ocean" και "The Gift" θυμίζουν εμπορικούς Echo & the Bunnymen) ή και κάτι ακαθόριστο αλλά πολύ οικείο. Είναι πράγματι άξιο απορίας γιατί δεν έγιναν πιο γνωστοί. Πέρα από την προφανή ευκολία του ακούσματος θα βρείτε αρκετές από τις συνθέσεις μοναδικές με αποκορύφωμα το ορχηστρικό "As U Fall" με τον καταπληκτικό καταιγισμό κιθάρας και ντραμς. Επίσης υπάρχουν αναφορές στον David Bowie (ή μήπως στους Associates;) με το "Closer Now". Επίσης, τα "This is my House" και "Let the Sun Beat Down on Me" θα ακουστούν αρκετά οικεία - σαν θολές μνήμες από ένα μακρινό σας παρελθόν. Ευχόμαστε καλή ακρόαση!

ENG: The LP "The Shadow to Fall" by Jih is one of the albums that surprised us while discovering bx59cppw.blogspot back in June 2010. Since 'bx-59cppw' is a friend who provides us every now and then with some material and most of the links at bx59cppw blogspot are down, we decided to offer you a "fresh" digital rip of this LP and a fresh look, too. Most of the info concerning Jih came from retrodundee.blogspot and it's worth a visit. Apparently, Jih is the one-man-band musician Grant McNally, who with a little help from musician friends like Billy MacKenzie and other 'Associates' members maintained this band. There seems to be an even closer relation to The Associates since McNally and MacKenzie have written songs for each other's bands. In addition, we must say that Jih are an experienced band that dates back to 1983 and have totally four releases including this LP. In any case, one may notice the uniqueness of the "The Shadow to Fall" LP from the start, because it sounds fresh and modern and because it sounds as perfect as if it was composed by a 'new wave super group'. Most of the songs are reminiscent of the 80's period and may sound extremely familiar ("Big Blue Ocean" and "The Gift" may remind you of  commercial-era Echo & the Bunnymen). A question is raised, why didn't they ever become famous? Despite of the familiarity and the Bunnymen-like stimulation there's more to this LP as there are songs such as the astonishing instrumental "As U Fall" where you will definitely enjoy the raging guitar and drums. There are also light referencess to David Bowie (or to The Associates if you prefer) in the song "Closer Now". Also, "This is my House" and "Let the Sun Beat Down on Me" will make a familiar impression - the way memories echo through the hazy and distant past. Have a good listening to this one!
