VA: Return of the Creeps - The Singles, 1995 Creep Records

Αναμφισβήτητα η Creep Records ήταν μία από τις πρώτες και ίσως η σημαντικότερη δισκογραφική εταιρεία στο χώρο του ανεξάρτητου Ελληνικού Rock. Σε πέντε δημιουργικά χρόνια από το 1982 έως το 1987 κυκλοφόρησε το υλικό μερικών από τα πιο σημαντικά συγκροτήματα στην κατηγορία του new wave-post punk. Μέσα από αρκετές δυσκολίες και ιδιοτροπίες της εποχής η Creep Records ανέδειξε τη σκοτεινή πλευρά του Ελληνικού ανεξάρτητου ροκ έτσι ώστε να δώσει και βήμα έκφρασης σε κάποιες μπάντες που σήμερα θεωρούνται πλέον "βασικές" από τους ανθρώπους που ακούν και ασχολούνται με το συγκεκριμένο είδος μουσικής. Δεν είναι καθόλου τυχαίο ονόματα σαν τους The Reporters, Villa 21, South of No North, Yell-O-Yell, Cpt Nefos, Metro Decay και άλλα, σήμερα να αποτελούν τον ακρογωνιαίο λίθο της μοντέρνας ανεξάρτητης ροκ μουσικής στην Ελλάδα, αλλά και στην Ευρώπη. Για εμάς εδώ στο 10.000 eyes blog, οι μουσικές αυτές ήταν και είναι η αφετηρία για ένα πανέμορφο μουσικό ταξίδι σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα και θέλουμε να ευχαριστήσουμε με την ευκαιρία όλους τους συντελεστές της Creep για την καταπληκτική μουσική που μας έδωσαν.

Όσον αφορά την συλλογή "Return of the Creeps, The Singles" που ανεβάζουμε σήμερα, αποτελεί την "κληρονομιά" των 7-ιντσων κυκλοφοριών της Creep. Συμμετέχει ολόκληρο το δυναμικό των συγκροτημάτων της εκτός από εκείνα τα οποία δεν κυκλοφόρησαν ποτέ 7", όπως είναι οι South of No North, οι Rehearsed Dreams και οι Angelo & His Egos. Τέλος, να σημειώσουμε πως μέσα στο βιβλιαράκι του cd υπάρχει κείμενο του ιδρυτή, Μπάμπη Δαλίδη και πως η συλλογή αυτή αφιερώνεται στους πρόωρα χαμένους Φιλώτα Βασκαλή (Yell-O-Yell) και Κώστα Ποθουλάκη (Reporters, Villa 21). ENG: Undoubtedly, one of the first and perhaps the most important record label in the independent Greek Rock scene was Creep Records. Surviving five creative years from 1982 to 1987 Creep Records released the material of some of the most significant Greek new wave and post punk bands. Throughout the difficulties and the whims of an era, this particular label highlighted the dark side of the local independent scene by giving the initiation to some once insignificant but nowadays essential bands such as The Reporters, Villa 21, South of No North, Yell-O-Yell, Cpt Nefos, Metro Decay, etc. Today some of those bands are considered to be the cornerstones of the local as well as the European new wave/post punk scene. For us the people behind Ten Thousand Eyes Blog the music released through Creep Records was and still is the beginning of a great musical journey on a worldwide scale and we'd like to thank all the people who worked with Creep for this.

Now about today's post, the compilation "Return of the Creeps - The Singles" is the "legacy" of all the 7inch releases, except for South of No North, Rehearsed Dreams and Angelo & His Egos. Those three bands never released a 7" single. Let's not forget to mention the introductory note by the founder of Creep Records Babis Dalidis in both Greek and English inside the cd booklet. Finally, this compilation is a tribute to Filotas Vaskalis (Yell-o-Yell) and Kostas Pothoulakis (The Reporters, Villa 21) who died at early age. Have a good listening to this one!!!

Headleaders: What It Means To Me 1983, Creep Records

Ένα από τα μεγάλα ζωντανά κεφάλαια της ελληνικής ανεξάρτητης σκηνής είναι ο Σπύρος Φάρος. Έχουμε ήδη ασχοληθεί με τη συμμετοχή του σε συγκροτήματα όπως οι Rehearsed Dreams και οι Spider's Web ενώ μελλοντικά πρόκειται να ασχοληθούμε και με τους "τρανούς" Yell-O-Yell. Ενώ ο Σ. Φάρος δούλευε με τους Y-O-Y, συμμετείχε εμβόλιμα και ως μπασίστας στους Headleaders, οι οποίοι ήταν επίσης ένα από τα συγκροτήματα που κυκλοφόρησαν το υλικό τους (ένα 7" "Voices" και ένα LP "What It Means To Me") μέσω της περίφημης Creep Records των σκοτεινών post punk συγκροτημάτων...

Το "What It Means To Me", είναι ένα από τα πιο όμορφα άλμπουμ της ελληνικής ανεξάρτητης δισκογραφίας. Αν και δεν κουβαλάει μεγάλα νοήματα ή βαρύγδουπες εκφράσεις, αυτός ο δίσκος με την -σχεδόν ποπ- απλότητα που τον διακατέχει οπωσδήποτε κατατάσσεται στα διαμάντια της δεκαετίας του 80. Αν και οι Headleaders άνηκαν στην θρυλική Creep, εντούτοις το "What It Means To Me" είναι ένα πιο φωτεινό και αισιόδοξο LP κατά κάποιο τρόπο καταφέρνει να ξεχωρίζει κυρίως λόγω του γλυκόπικρου new wave μινιμαλισμού του, των απλών στίχων, ωστόσο χωρίς να πέφτει στην παγίδα του εύκολου ακούσματος. Το άλμπουμ είναι σίγουρα ένα από αυτά που θα αγαπήσετε και που θα σας κερδίζει κάθε φορά που θα το ακούτε. Περιέχονται δέκα αυτοβιογραφικά κομμάτια που περιγράφουν καθημερινές και γνώριμες (σε όλους) καταστάσεις δοσμένα με απλό και αρκετά εύστοχο στίχο. Από τα καλύτερα του δίσκου είναι βέβαια το "I'm Living Like A Fool" το οποίο ήταν b-side στο 7ιντσο "Voices" (1982) - Και τα τρία κομμάτια του 7ιντσου θα τα βρείτε εδώ. Το "I'm Living Like A Fool" υπάρχει σε πιο ώριμη εκτέλεση στο άλμπουμ. Επίσης αγαπημένο και ξεχωριστό το εκπληκτικό "Try", τα πάντα διαχρονικά και κοφτερά post punk διαμάντια "Pressure" και "I Give Up", επίσης και το σχεδόν garage "Feelings Of Madness". Κανένα τραγούδι του "What It Means To Me" δεν απογοητεύει... Στο σύνολό τους οι δέκα συνθέσεις αν και περιορισμένες στη βασική ενορχήστρωση που σου μένουν για πάντα, σχεδόν φέρνει νοσταλγία η μουσική... το όμορφα παιγμένο μπάσσο, τα έξυπνα πλήκτρα και οι νεοκυματικές πεντακάθαρες κιθάρες. Να προσθέσουμε πως στο σχήμα των Headleaders τα φωνητικά ανήκουν στον Ιωσήφ Μπασελιέ όπως και η ωραία δουλειά στα τύμπανα - μετέπειτα θήτευσε και στους Next To Nothing (πουπεριμένουν τη σειρά τους σε μελλοντική ανάρτηση), και οι έξοχες κιθάρες στον Λάκη Χαλκιόπουλο. Σίγουρα θα σας αρέσει αυτό το διαμάντι. Καλή ακρόαση φίλες και φίλοι.

ENG: One of the greatest still living chapters in the history of the Greek Independent scene is Spyros Faros. We have already mentioned in previous posts about his involvement with various groups such as Rehearsed Dreams and Spider's Web.In the near future we will have a post about the "grand" Yell-O-Yell, too. While Faros was still a member of Y-O-Y, he worked as a bass player with the Headleaders who were also another band from the roster of the famous Creep Records, home of most Greek post punk bands during the 80's.

The Headleaders released a 7inch single ("Voices") in 1982 and a full length LP in 1983 entitled "What It Means To Me" which we consider to be one of the most beautiful albums of the period. "What It Means To Me" is not a bearer of grandiose deliverance like most LPs from Creep Records were, on the contrary because of its simple "poppish" approach it could be labeled as gem. As mentioned above, the Headleaders were another band signed with Creep, however they didn't sound like other Creep bands; their sound was bright and optimistic. Their only one LP stands out because of its bittersweet new wave minimalism, the simple lyrics, the above didn't constitute an easy listening in the end. The album includes ten "autobiographical" songs whose lyrics plainly depict common everyday situations. One of the best songs of the LP is the well-known "I'm Living Like A Fool" (a different version of the song existed as b-side track of the "Voices" 7'')-All three songs of the 7'' are here. Another special and great song is "Try", there are also some timeless post punk sharply-shaped gems such as "Pressure" and "I Give Up" along with the garage-feel "Feelings Of Madness". Honestly, "What It Means To Me" is altogether a flawless album no matter how minimal and basic the ten songs are. Overall, an LP that stays with you because of the beautifull bass lines, the intelligently and thrifty played keyboards and certainly the new wavish clear cut guitar. Really makes people nostalgic at times. Let us also note that the rest of the Headleaders were Josef Baselie (vocals and drums) also a member of Next To Nothing later on, plus Lakis Halkiopoulos on the excellent guitar. We are certain that you will love this one. Have a good listening to it!!!

Villa 21: Men Of Clay 1985, Creep Records

Πριν από ένα χρόνο -ίσως και περισσότερο- είχαμε παρουσιάσει τον πρώτο δίσκο των Villa 21 με τίτλο "A Ghost On the Move". Σήμερα θα παρουσιάσουμε το δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους που κυκλοφόρησε επίσης στην Creep Records το 1985 με τον τίτλο "Men Of Clay". Το εν λόγω άλμπουμ είναι κατά την ταπεινή μας γνώμη ισάξιο, αν όχι καλύτερο από το πρώτο. Ηχογραφήθηκε ζωντανά στο στούντιο και διατηρεί την ενέργεια μιας ζωντανής εμφάνισης σε όλη του τη διάρκεια. Άψογη ενορχήστρωση και εκτέλεση των τραγουδιών αρχής γενομένης από το ομώνυμο "Men Of Clay" που κυριολεκτικά 'σπάει κόκκαλα': "Men of clay fear not to pray..." και μόλις μια ανάσα μας χωρίζει από το το επίμονο τρέμολο στο μπάσο και τα χειμαρρώδη τύμπανα που καθοδηγούν αυτόν τον καταπληκτικό post punk δίσκο. Οι κιθάρες στριγγλίζουν από αγωνία ενώ ο Κώστας Ποθουλάκης ο οποίος απαγγέλει τους στίχους του σχεδόν σαν να προσπαθεί να εξορκίσει τον θάνατο, τη ζωή, τον έρωτα, την προδοσία, την μοναξιά... Μετά τα εξίσου καταπληκτικά "Meaning" και "Creature" έρχεται μιά ακόμη έκπληξη. Η επανεκτέλεση του δεύτερου τους single "Move" σε σχεδόν επτάλεπτη διάρκεια. Η ενέργεια που περιγράψαμε πιο πάνω διακατέχει και το νέο "Move", Ακούγοτάς το λίγο-πολύ καταλαβαίνουμε πως θα ήταν οι Villa 21 στη σκηνή, όσοι δεν προλάβαμε να τους δούμε ποτέ. Κι όμως εξήμισυ λεπτά περνούν πολύ γρήγορα...και το θορυβώδες "Still Can Burn" παίρνει τη σκυτάλη, φιλοδοξώντας να δώσει περισσότερη ενέργεια στον δίσκο. Όλα τα όργανα μοιάζουν σαν να παραβγαίνουν, με το μπάσο να είναι νικητής, έπειτα τα φωνητικά στη δεύτερη θέση, γεμάτα οδύνη. Γνώριμες μελωδίες επανέρχονται με το "New Days" που χαλαρώνει κάπως τους ρυθμούς σε ένα αργόσυρτο χορό με ξαφνικές μα παροδικές "εκρήξεις". Στο ίδιο μοτίβο κινείται και το "Birth". Τέλος, το πένθιμο "Damnation" ξεκινά με την κιθάρα που δεν ξεχωρίζει από την επίσης θρηνητική κραυγή του Ποθουλάκη η οποία μεταμορφώνεται σιγά σιγά σε τραγούδι...

Πρέπει εδώ να πούμε πως το LP "Men Of Clay" στέκεται στο χρονικό σημείο της μετέπειτα εξέλιξης του συγκροτήματος σε ένα καθαρόαιμο rock 'n' roll σχήμα με έντονες garage αποχρώσεις. Από εδώ και μετά οι Villa 21 ακούγονται αρκετά διαφορετικοί, καθόλου κακοί βέβαια και εννοείται πως θα ξανατιμήσουν το blog μας με τις υπόλοιπες κυκλοφορίες τους. Καλή ακρόαση λοιπόν, σίγουρα θα απολαύσετε αυτή τη δισκάρα.

ENG: About a year ago or even more, we presented Villa 21's first album "A Ghost On the Move". Today we bring their second LP also released by Creep records in 1985 and entitled "Men Of Clay". By the way, we humbly support the idea that this second LP is equivalent to the first if not better than the first. The album was recorded in one day live session at the studio, preserving the energy of a live performance all the way through. Nevertheless, the arrangement is effective in conveying the original style of Villa 21 even from the homonymous track "Men Of Clay" that literally "kicks ass": "Men of clay fear not to pray..." and just a breath away here comes the persistent trembling yet powerful sound of the bass guitar along with the roar of drums leading this excellent post punk music. The guitars scream in agony following the voice of Costas Pothulakis. He recites his verses almost as if he is trying to exorcise life, death, pain, love, betrayal, loneliness... After the equally great "Meaning" and "Creature" follows a surprise; there's a new version of their second single "Move"rambling on for almost 7 minutes. We believe that Villa 21 had been a great live band, too bad we never had the chance to enjoy them, yet this record should be reminiscent of their legendary stage performances. Nevertheless, seven minutes go by very fast and the noisy and violent post punk anthem "Still Can Burn" enters side Two. One might think that the instruments are involved in some kind of a race and the bass guitar is the winner, then Pothulakis' voice comes next striving with agony. Some familiar tunes swirl around as "New Days" and "Birth" are slowing down a bit. Finally, the mournful "Damnation" begins with the shrieking vocals which eventually become singing..."Ow-how, Ow-how"....

We must say here that after releasing the "Men Of Clay" LP Villa 21 gradually mutated into a rock n' roll/garage band. No matter what, we will post more of their work in the near future. Have a good listening to this one, we are certain that you will enjoy this great music.

Cpt Nefos: Cadillac Dreams 7'' 1983, Happening Records plus Silence Interrupted LP 1984, Creep Records

Στη σημερινή -και κάπως καθυστερημένη- ανάρτηση σας παρουσιάζουμε με μεγάλη μας χαρά ένα από τα πλέον αγαπημένα μας new wave/post punk συγκροτήματα από την Ελλάδα, είναι επίσης ένα από τα πιο παλιά - σχεδόν από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1980. Μιλάμε για τους Cpt Neφos, το βραχύβιο αυτό μουσικό σχήμα που μας χάρισε το κλασικό "Cadillac Dreams". Οι Cpt Neφos είναι δημιούργημα του Άκη Μπογιατζή ο οποίος στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 80 σχημάτισε τους Libido Blume (με τα δύο LP και το ένα mLP τους θα ασχοληθούμε στο προσεχές μέλλον), ενώ τα τελευταία 20 χρόνια "τρέχει" με το τρένο των καταπληκτικών Sigmatropic. Όμως εδώ η ανάρτηση αφορά μόνο τους Cpt Neφos στους οποίους συμμετείχαν εκτός από τον Άκη Μπογιατζή (στα φωνητικά και στο μπάσσο) και οι Μάκης Βρεττός στα κρουστά, Ιάκωβος Μανής στην κιθάρα και στα δεύτερα φωνητικά και τέλος ο Γιώργος Τσουρλάκης στο σαξόφωνο. Δημιουργήθηκαν το 1982 εν μέσω της άνθησης του punk αλλά και post punk μουσικού κινήματος σύγχρονοι των Stress, Ausswich, Ανυπόφοροι, Metro Decay, Villa 21, South of No North κ.α. Μετά από πολλές πρόβες και κάποιες ζωντανές εμφανίσεις (είναι χαρακτηριστική η αφήγηση από την πρώτη τους εμφάνιση στου Γκύζη, όπου έπαιζαν μαζί με Stress και Ausswich και τελικά η συναυλία να διακόπτεται με την παρέμβαση της αστυνομίας (πηγή: www.anexartisi.gr). Όπως είπαμε και πιο πάνω, οι Cpt Neφos ήταν βραχύβιο σχήμα, κυκλοφόρησαν μόνο ένα 7ιντσο και ένα LP. Το 1983 ήταν η χρονιά κυκλοφορίας του 7ιντσου "Cadillac Dreams" (b-side "Enjoying") στην Happening Records. Και τα δύο κομμάτια του single ήταν δυναμικά δείγματα της μουσικής κατεύθυνσης του συγκροτήματος και μια γεύση του τι θα επακολουθούσε στο LP, δηλαδή μιλάμε για πρωτότυπη μουσική σε πρότυπα πολύ μπροστά από την εποχή της - πάντα αναφερόμαστε στα Ελληνικά δεδομένα. Πιστεύουμε πως το κομμάτι "Cadillac Dreams" είναι από τα πιο γνωστά και αγαπημένα πολλών οπαδών της μουσικής αυτής εντός και εκτός των γεωγραφικών ορίων της Ελλάδας. Την επόμενη χρονιά, 1984, κυκλοφόρησε και το LP τους με τίτλο "Silence Interrupted" αυτή τη φορά στην θρυλική Creep Records. To "Silence Interrupted" είναι απλά ένας τέλειος new wave δίσκος, κάθε κομμάτι καταπληκτικό, πρωτότυπο, με επίσης ωραίους και καλογραμμένους στίχους, άψογη ενορχήστρωση. Ακούγοντας τον δίσκο έστω και από το mp3 μπορεί κανείς να νοιώσει την ενέργεια της μουσικής αλλά και των δημιουργών της. Δεν μπορούμε να ξεχωρίσουμε κανένα κομμάτι από τα 11 που απαρτίζουν το "Silence Interrupted" ως "το καλύτερο" γιατί απλούστατα είναι όλα τους αξεπέραστα... θα το διαπιστώσετε ακούγοντάς τα, όταν μάλιστα θα θελήσετε να πατήσετε το replay για να το ακούσετε από την αρχή συν την ακόμα πιο ζωηρή επανεκτέλεση του "Cadillac Dreams". Επίσης, αυτό που κάνει τα τραγούδια τους ασύγκριτα, είναι το χαρακτηριστικό παίξιμο της κιθάρας και το πως δένει με το σαξόφωνο, το άψογο μπάσσο και φυσικά η χαρακτηριστική και απίστευτα εκφραστική και ασύγκριτη φωνή του Άκη που ακόμα και σήμερα είναι ίδια απαράλλαχτη στην μουσική των Sigmatropic. Ίσως μάλιστα σε αυτά τα πιο παλιά τραγούδια να θυμίζει ελαφρώς Robert Smith, αλλά πως να γίνει διαφορετικά, οι Cure ήταν μια από τις μεγαλύτερες επιρροές στην Ελληνική new wave/post punk σκηνή. Ευχόμαστε καλή ακρόαση, είμαστε σίγουροι πως θα ευχαριστηθείτε τη μουσική των Cpt Neφos. 7ιντσο και LP βρίσκονται στο ίδιο αρχείο.

ENG: In today's -somehow delayed- post we are very happy to present one of our ever favourite Greek new wave/post punk bands. It is also one of the oldest, back in the early 80's. This small intro is about Cpt Neφos (=Captain Nefos=Meaning Captain Smog in English) a short-lived group that gave us the classic "Cadillac Dreams" single. Cpt Neφos was the creation of Akis Boyatzis who also created new wave act Libido Blume in the mid 80's and the amazing Sigmatropic in the late 90's (we will deal with the releases of Libido Blume in the near future). But this post is about Cpt Neφos, isn't it? The band except Akis Boyatzis (vocals, bass guitar) included Makis Vrettos (drums, percussion), Iakovos Manis (guitar, backing vocals) and Giorgos Tsourlakis (saxophone). They emerged as a group in 1982, in the period that punk, new wave and post punk music were blooming in Greece. Contemporary and fellow bands included Stress, Ausswich, Anypoforoi (meaning=Intolerants), Metro Decay, Villa 21, South of No North. Cpt Neφos' ever first live appearance took place in the Ghyzi area in Athens along with Stress and Ausswich (punk bands) and it is said that the police interrupted and finally terminated the concert, so you know what we are talking about (source: www.anexartisi.gr). As mentioned above, Cpt Neφos was a short-lived group, released only a 7inch single and an LP. The 7 inch was released in 1983 under Happening Records and was entitled "Cadillac Dreams" (b-side "Enjoying"), both songs were samples of where their music orientation and what the following LP would be about. Always having in mind that we are referiing to Greek independent music scene during the 1980's, this LP is outstanding and original, in addition, the "Cadillac Dreams" is a lifetime classic new wave song, one of the most popular hits in Greece and abroad. The band next year released "Silence Interrupted" LP, this time through the legendary Creep Records. "Silence Interrupted" is simply a great album for new wave/post punk fans, every song an original with great music and lyrics, an overall flawless arrangement. By just listening to the LP - even in mp3 format - one is able to feel the energy of the music and the musicians as well, then you will want to listen to it again...not to mention that the LP contains a newer spirited and vivid version of "Cadillac Dreams". We avoid pointing any of the songs as the "best song" of the LP, simply because all of them are equally great. This is because of arious reasons: the great guitar play that merges beautifully with the sax, the flawless bass play, as well as the expressive and uncompared voice of Akis Boyatzis (still sounds the same even today with the music of Sigmatropic). Akis' voice may resemble a bit that of Robert Smith's at that time, nevertheless Robert Smith and The Cure were a great influence for the Greek independent scene. Villa 21: A Ghost on the Move, 1983 Creep Records - cd reissue 1995 Creep Records+F.M. Records

Στη σημερινή ανάρτησή μας παρουσιάζουμε τον πρώτο δίσκο ενός από τα πιο σπουδαία και πολυσχιδή ελληνικά συγκροτήματα της αγγλόφωνης ανεξάρτητης σκηνής οι οποίοι ήταν ενεργοί για περίπου μια δεκαετία (1981-1991). Ο λόγος φυσικά για τους Villa 21 οι οποίοι πέρασαν από πολλά μουσικά στυλ στο φάσμα της ανεξάρτητης ροκ, και στη δεκαετία της ύπαρξης και ακμής τους εκφράστηκαν μέσω new/dark wave ήχων, έως ότου κατέληξαν προοδευτικά από τη μια κυκλοφορία τους στην άλλη έχοντας πια garage punk μουσικές φόρμες. Το συγκρότημα ήταν δημιούργημα του ταλαντούχου Κώστα Ποθουλάκη (φωνή, κιθάρα) οποίος μετά από τη θητεία στο θρυλικό σχήμα Παρθενογένεσις και την δημιουργία των Reporters μπήκε σε πιο ώριμα μουσικά μονοπάτια φτιάχνοντας τους Villa 21. Περισσότερες πληροφορίες για τη σύνθεση και τη δισκογραφία τους θα βρείτε εδώ, αν και με αυτή την ανάρτηση ουσιαστικά υποσχόμαστε πως θα αναρτήσουμε εν καιρώ όλα τους τα άλμπουμ. Πρέπει να πούμε εδώ ότι εμπνεύστηκαν το όνομά τους από το την ψυχιατρική πτέρυγα που είχε δημιουργήσει ο ψυχίατρος David Graham Cooper στο Λονδίνο, και στην οποία "φιλοξενούσε" νεαρούς σχιζοφρενείς.

"Καλωσήρθατε στη Βίλλα 21...."

Με αυτό το στίχο ξεκινάει ο πρώτος μεγάλος δίσκος των Villa 21 με τίτλο "A Ghost on the Move". Έτσι, ο Κώστας Ποθουλάκης μας καλωσορίζει και μας παρουσιάζει στην υπαρκτή παράνοια του μοντέρνου κόσμου, στην μοναξιά, στην αποξένωση και την τρέλα. Έτσι χτίζεται σιγά-σιγά και το "A Ghost on the Move". Από το πρώτο κομμάτι "Welcome to the Villa 21" φαίνεται η μουσική κατεύθυνση του συγκροτήματος, πλέον αρκετά διαφορετική από τους Reporters. Είναι τόσο χαρακτηριστικά διαφορετικό το παίξιμο της κιθάρας του Ποθουλάκη, καθώς και τα φωνητικά του, λέξεις και κραυγές, γρυλλίσματα και αναστεναγμοί, συναινούν σε ξαφνική ωριμότητα έστω αν κυκλοφόρησε το "Bare Hands" μόλις μια χρονιά πριν και μοιάζει τόσο διαφορετικό. Αμέσως μετά αναλαμβάνει το "In the Darkened Night" με τις κοφτές νότες στο μπάσο του Ανδρέα Παπαδόπουλου και το αλά-Stranglers ρεφραίν. Το πολλές φορές απόκοσμο

παίξιμο του synthesizer-keyboards από την Άντα Λαμπάρα, όπως στο επικό 9-λεπτο "Like the First Time" δίνει αυτή τη σκοτεινή και δυσοίωνη ατμόσφαιρα στον ήχο τους - χαρακτηριστικό του ήχου της Creep Records βέβαια - όμως όλα τα τραγούδια αυτού του δίσκου είναι καταπληκτικά. Οι συνθέσεις φανερώνουν έναν ή και περισσότερους εμπνευσμένους δημιουργούς. Ο ορυμαγδός των τυμπάνων του Μπάμπη Δαλίδη (ιδρυτή-ιδιοκτήτη της Creep) δίνει το στίγμα σε κάθε τραγούδι ξεχωριστά, την οργή που ξεσπάει προς τα έξω, "you crave for recovery from the human disease" (στίχος του "Like the First Time"). Όμως η οργή φέρνει και την απελπισία, καθώς φτάνει το αναποφάσιστο "Too Much Nothing", και έπειτα, η απομόνωση "gates are closed to the world outside" από το "Losing Control" και "all thoughts stuck on an endless start", στίχοι που αποτυπώνονται για πάντα, ανακαλούν την αναζήτηση του (χαμένου) εαυτού, της ανθρώπινης επαφής, αλλά και την μόνιμη εγκατάσταση της αποξένωσης από ο,τιδήποτε οικείο. Το πλέον κλασικό "Annie's Animal" με την ορμή και τους χαρακτηριστικά διφορούμενους στίχους έχει κι αυτό τη θέση του ανάμεσα στα μεγάλα τραγούδια. Ο δίσκος κλείνει με το "Death Career" άλλο ένα έπος των 10 λεπτών αυτή τη φορά, με δίλεπτη εισαγωγή, εναλλαγές στο ρυθμό και τις μελωδίες και η αργόσυρτη κιθάρα προετοιμάζει τα φωνητικά του Ποθουλάκη...."Separated lives can't exist for long/getting fooled by the eyes that are watching all/the dreams, the hopes and the terrible fears/all are so real in a death career...". Επίσης να πούμε πως επιπλέον φωνητικά στα "Too Much Nothing" και "Death Career" κάνει ο πολύ καλός φίλος του συγκροτήματος Feel ή Fill Scars (Φιλώτας Βασκαλής) από τους Yell-o-Yell.

Πρόκειται για ένα αριστουργηματικό δίσκο. Είμαστε σίγουροι πως όσοι δεν τον έχετε ακούσει, θα τον αγαπήσετε. Ας σημειωθεί ότι το mp3 προέρχεται από την επιλεκτική επανέκδοση του καταλόγου της Creep Records σε cd μέσω της F.M. Records. Θα βρείτε στίχους και εξώφυλλα επίσης.

In today's post we present the very first LP record by one of the most important and multifarious bands of the greek independent scene. We are talking about Villa 21 of course, who were active for a decade (1981-1991) having changed many music styles in the range of independent/alternative rock genre: they primarily expressed themselves through dark/post punk until they settled in garage punk in the latter years. Villa 21 were the creation of Costas Pothulakis (guitar+vocals), who also worked in the past with the legendary Parthenogenesis, then formed The Reporters, however entered more mature music paths with Villa 21. You will find more information about the band here, but we promise that we will post all their LPs in time. Here we should say that the band was named after a psychiatric wing for young schizophrenics founded by Dr David Graham Cooper in London .

The LP "A Ghost on the Move" opens with this verse: "Welcome to the Villa 21..., " Costas Pothulakis introduces us into the modern world of paranoia, loneliness, alienation and madness, thus "A Ghost on the Move" is being built... From the very first song it shows that the music direction is very much different compared to The Reporters LP, even Pothulakis' guitar skill is so characteristically different as well as his way of singing, the cries, the growls and moans consent to a musical maturity on his behalf. "In the Darkened Night" takes over with cut-down bass lines of Andreas Papadopoulos and the Stranglers-like refrain. The keyboards played by Anda Labara produce an eerie atmosphere, especially in the next song, the 9 minute long epic "Like the First Time" where the setting seems to be more ominous and darker. Of course this is the "Creep Records sound", but overall this record and every one of the songs are astonishing. Every composition reveals one or more inspired masterminds. The never-ending beating of drums by Babis Dalidis (founder and owner of Creep Records) gives position to each song - unfolding the outbreak of rage as "you crave for recovery from the human disease" (lyrics from "Like the First Time"). The rage however brings in the despair too as the "undeciding" "Too Much Nothing" draws in, and after that portraying isolation with "Losing Control" ("gates are closed to the world outside") and "all thoughts stuck on an endless start" forever imprinted in our minds recall each one's request for the lost oneself, human touch, and the fact that alienation is installed forever. There's also the classic "Annie's Animal" with the rushing music and the ambiguous verses, and the record closes with "Death Career", another epic of 10 minute length, a 2 min introduction, an alternation of pace and instrumentation up until the slow paced guitar prepares Pothulakis' vocals....."Separated lives can't exist for long/getting fooled by the eyes that are watching all/the dreams, the hopes and the terrible fears/all are so real in a death career..."

Let us note that extra vocals in "Too Much Nothing" and "Death Career" are by Feel (or) Fill Scars (real name: Filotas Vaskalis) of Yell-o-Yell.

"A Ghost on the Move" is a masterpiece of the greek post punk scene. We are certain for those of you who have never listened to this record, it will be one of your favorites. Finally, we should say that the rip is from the cd reissue of the original LP via F.M. Records in 1995. You will also find the lyrics and covers as well.

South of No North, Live@Grava Lyceum 1984

Τί να πει κανείς για τους South of No North;;; Κατά τη γνώμη μου είναι το μεγαλύτερο darkwave συγκρότημα που έβγαλε αυτή η χώρα. Κυριάρχησαν σε δύσκολους καιρούς κατά τους οποίους ήταν δύσκολες οι οποιεσδήποτε διαφορετικές "φωνές" εκτός κατεστημένου ήχου και στη ρόκ αλλά και στην εγχώρια μουσική...βιοτεχνία γενικότερα. Μπορεί να πει κανείς πολλά για αυτούς...πως είναι παραγνωρισμένοιαλλά και υπερτιμημένοι, και τα περισσότερα μπορεί και να ισχύουν, αλλά είναι η μουσική τους τέτοια που αναπτύχθηκε από δίσκο σε δίσκο με πολύ ωραίο και δημιουργικό τρόπο. Ώσπου έβγαλαν το ομώνυμο άλμπουμ τους το 1990, το οποίο είναι το τελειότερο και τους έκανε γνωστούς στο ευρύ κοινό. Όχι βέβαια πως τα 2 προηγούμενα δεν ήταν αξιόλογα. Προσωπική μας άποψη είναι πως το καλύτερο - πιο "θανατερό" άλμπουμ είναι το δεύτερο "Fell Frozen", αλλά το πιο ολοκληρωμένο μουσικά είναι το τρίτο (ομώνυμο και τελευταίο). Όσο για το πρώτο "La Crimae Christi", είναι η τραχιά και πρωτόλεια μορφή με τις καταφανείς επιρροές τους. Η σημερινή ανάρτηση δεν αφορά κανένα από τα μεταγενέστερα άλμπουμ, αλλά μια πειρατική κυκλοφορία που αφορά το πρώτο τους live, την πρώτη τους ζωντανή εμφάνιση στο Λύκειο της Γκράβας (μαζί με άλλα συγκροτήματα της εποχής Art of Parties, Cpt Nefos, Metro Decay) το Μάρτιο του 1984, υποθέτω λίγο πριν την κυκλοφορία του πρώτου La Crimae Christi. Περιέχει κομμάτια τα οποία βρίσκονται στον πρώτο τους δίσκο αλλά και κομμάτια τα οποία δεν βρίσκονται πουθενά αλλού και είναι τιτλοφορημένα ως "Unreleased" - και κάποιος μπορεί να αναρωτηθεί γιατί ποτε δεν κυκλοφόρησαν το υλικό αυτό. Το πρώτο .... ίσως λέγεται "The Other Side (of the room)", το δεύτερο δεν αναγνωρίζεται, αλλά το τρίτο είναι μια ιδιότυπη διασκευή στο "Exercise One" των Joy Division με ίδια τη μουσική αλλά στίχους των South. Το κομματι αυτό υπάρχει στην επανέκδοση του Fell Frozen από την Dead Scarlet Records.

Πάντως ξεδιπλώνουν όλο το ταλέντο τους και την ικανότητά τους για ζωντανές εμφανίσεις. Όσοι τους είδαν (με ελαφρά αλλαγμένη σύνθεση) στη επανασύνδεσή τους το 2003 (Elfentanz 2), αλλά και όσοι τυχεροί τους είχαν δει σε οποιαδήποτε εμφάνιση κατά τα χρόνια της ακμής τους σίγουρα ξέρουν γιατί μιλάμε.

Λοιπόν οι South of No North σε πρωτόλεια ζωντανή εμφάνιση εδώ... απολαύστε τους.

What is there to say about South of No North??? In our opinion, they are the greatest darkwave band of Greece. They dominated in those difficult years, where any difference from the "established" culture (and sub-culture) in rock and local music scene was difficult to handle.

One can say a lot about South of No North...for example that they were unrecognized or even overvalued, and most of the above might be true, but their music evolved from one record to the other nicely and smoothly. In 1990 they released their Omonymous LP which is their finest and made them known to a wider audience. That doesn't mean that the previous 2 LPs were not worthy at all. Our personal opinion is that their "deadliest" LP is their 2nd entitled "Fell Frozen" (Creep Records, 1986), but their most complete is their 3rd omonymous "South of No North" (Wipe out, 1990). As for the first -but not least- "La Crimae Christi" (Creep Records, 1984), it is actually the amateur effort with all the obvious influences (Joy Division, Bauhaus). Today's post isn't about any of their official releases, but about a pirate release of their first live appearance ever at the Grava Lyceum (along with other legendary bands of the era, the Art of Parties, Cpt Nefos, Metro Decay) , supposedly before they ever released "La Crimae Christi". This live recording contains songs from their 1st LP, as well as 3 more "unreleased" songs - wonder why they never released those great extras. The possible title for the first of those unreleased might be "The Other Side (of the room)", the second can't be recognized, but the third is a special cover of Joy Division's "Exercise One" but with lyrics changed by the South of No North. There is a studio version of this track added to the re-release of "Fell Frozen" by Dead Scarlet Records.

The band unfolds their talent and ability to perform live. Whoever saw their live reunion appearance at the Elfentanz 2 festival in 2003 and those really lucky ones who have seen them playing live along the years of their heyday, really know what we are talking about.

The Reporters, "Bare Hands" 1983 (Creep Records)

Ελπίζουμε πως δεν αργήσαμε πολύ για την επόμενη ανάρτηση!!!! Σήμερα παρουσιάζουμε την πρώτη σε δίσκο 33 στροφών κυκλοφορία της Creep Records, μιας εταιρείας που συνέβαλε τα μέγιστα στην ιστορία του ελληνικού ανεξάρτητου ροκ. Θα μας απασχολήσει μελλοντικά σε κάποιο αφιέρωμα είτε με συνδέσμους, είτε με μελλοντικές αναρτήσεις και άλλων εξαφανισμένων κυκλοφοριών. Ο πρώτος μεγάλος δίσκος της Creep ήταν το “Bare Hands” του 1983 από τους Reporters. Ένα κλασικό new wave σχήμα με κιθάρες μπασο, ντραμς και συνθεσάϊζερ, και μια μεγάλη χαρισματική προσωπικότητα στα φωνητικά. Η σύνθεση (από myspace) ήταν Κώστας Ποθουλάκης (κιθάρα, φωνή), Γιώργος Ρουμάνης (τύμπανα) Σόλων Σταθόπουλος (μπάσο), Χρυσόστομος Μουράτογλου (πλήκτρα), Παρασκευάs Καραμικές (κιθάρα). Ο Κώστας Ποθουλάκης ίδρυσε αργότερα και τους Villa 21, ένα σχήμα αρχικά κοντινό στον ήχο των Reporters, το οποίο όμως ανέπτυξε πιο garage και rock n roll φόρμες. Το “Bare Hands”, είναι ένας δίσκος αναφορά για το ελληνικό post punk και new wave, με πολύ καλές συνθέσεις ντυμένες με ατμοσφαιρικά synth και τα εξαιρετικά φωνητικά του Ποθουλάκη. Σίγουρα αφού τον ακούσετε θα σιγοψιθυρίζετε τα “I Live in Lies”, “You and I”, “Shades”. Επίσης, οι στίχοι είναι αρκετά λιτοί και σκοτεινοί με υπαρξιακές αναφορές και ανησυχίες.

Αυτό που κάνει εντύπωση πάντως είναι το αινιγματικό εξώφυλλο, το οποίο απεικονίζει μπροστά δύο χέρια που χαιρετιούνται, έχουν διαφορετικό χρώμα το καθένα και το ένα από τα δύο σκίζεται, στη δε πίσω πλευρά, ξανά χαιρετιούνται αλλά το ένα χέρι είναι ραμμένο. Νομίζω πως παίρνει πολλές ερμηνείες, και είναι μοναδικό, δεν το έχω δεί αλλού. Ίσως οι στίχοι του ομώνυμου τραγουδιού να είναι κάπως διαφωτιστικοί… “see these bare hands, they can kill you now, they can break your neck……don’t challenge me, don’t bother me, I can reach to the end”.

We hope that we haven’t been too late for the next post!!!!! Today we present the first Long Play record ever issued by Creep Records, the independent record company that contributed the most to the Greek independent rock scene. In the future we will deal more with Creep Records either in the form of music links and/or our own posts.

The first LP by Creep Records was “Bare Hands” in 1983 by a band called The Reporters which were a classic new wave formation with guitar, bass guitar, drums, lots of synth and a charismatic voice. The actual band composed of: Costas Pothoulakis (guitar, vocals), Giorgos Roumanis (drums), Solon Stathopoulos (bass), Chrysostomos Mouratoglou (keyboards), Paraskeyas Karamikes (2nd guitar). Costas Pothoulakis later founded Villa 21, a group who sounded very much like The Reporters at first, but eventually evolved into a garage and rock n roll band. “Bare Hands” is a reference LP for the Greek new wave/post punk scene, with beautiful compositions filled with atmospheric keyboards and Costas’ excellent vocal work. I am sure that after you finished listening to the record, you might find yourselves singing “I Live in Lies”, “You and I”, or “Shades”, the three most outstanding tracks… The lyrics are laconic and dark in an existential way.

Finally, what is also impressive about this album is the cover. It is enigmatic. On the front side it shows a handshake of two different in colour hands, and one hand gets ripped apart. On the back side another handshake and the ripped hand appears to be sewn. Perhaps the lyrics of the same-titled track are more enlightening…“see these bare hands, they can kill you now, they can break your neck……don’t challenge me, don’t bother me, I can reach to the end”.

Προβαρισμένα Ονειρα !!! (Rehearsed Dreams: Repulsion 1985, Creep Records)

Σήμερα παρουσιάζουμε άλλο ένα δίσκο ορόσημο. Δυσεύρετος πια στα δισκοπωλεία, κάποτε σε πληθώρα, τώρα πια σπάνιος και πανάκριβος.

Ηχητικά αυτός ο δίσκος δεν μπορεί να ήταν ιδιαίτερα δημοφιλής, όμως είναι από τους λίγες δημιουργίες σ' αυτό το στυλ από Ελληνικό συγκρότημα. Είναι το Repulsion από τους Rehearsed Dreams ηχογραφημένος το 1985 και κυκλοφόρησε από την ιστορική Creep. Post punk ήχος, τολμώ να πω πως -αν εξαιρέσουμε τους Yell-o-Yell που είχαν παρόμοιο ήχο- αγγίζει τα όρια του death rock κυρίως από άποψη θεματολογίας: θάνατος και παρακμή αγγίζουν ό,τι μας περιβάλλει, η ιερότητα της αυτοκτονίας ως μία λύση, και τέλος ένας ανολοκλήρωτος έρωτας... όλα αυτά εμπλουτίζουν την ατμόσφαιρα και φορτίζουν συναισθηματικά του ακροατή. Αυτός ο δίσκος αποτελεί μύηση σε σκοτεινότερα μονοπάτια της ανθρώπινης ύπαρξης. Κυρίως για τους μυημένους....που θα νοιώσουν σίγουρα την ανατριχίλα της απόγνωσης.

We are presenting another landmark record, rare to find in the local second-hand record shops, and if found, it wοuld be quite expensive. It's all about the Repulsion LP from the Rehearsed Dreams recorded in 1985 and published by the legendary Creep Records. Definitely in the post punk genre (if we exclude the similarly sounding Yell-o-Yell) Rehearsed Dreams have a 'death-rock' touch mostly in lyrics themes: Death and decay over everything that surrounds our existence, the sacredness of the suicide solution and finally an unfinished love affair. All these enrich the atmosphere and (over)charge the listener's emotions. This record is an initiation into the darkest paths of human existence. Especially for those who know...they will sense the chill of despair.
