Spacelings: 2000 Megatons Of Love LP, 1988 Voices Of Wonder Records

Σήμερα παρουσιάζουμε μια νεο-ψυχεδελική μπάντα από την Νορβηγία οι οποίοι ονομάζονται Spacelings και με το μοναδικό τους LP με τίτλο "2000 Megatons Of Love" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1988 από την Voices Of Wonder Records. Δυστυχώς δεν υπάρχει καμία πληροφορία για το εξαιρετικό συγκρότημα της ανάρτησής μας εκτός από το discogs, όπου βλέπουμε πως πριν από το "2000 Megatons Of Love" ευθύνονται για την κυκλοφορία ενός 7" single και ενός  12" e.p.
Τώρα όσον αφορά τη μουσική αυτή καθεαυτή, το σύνολο του δίσκου αποτελεί ένα εξαιρετικό δείγμα δουλειάς και περιέχει αρκετά διαμάντια που κυριολεκτικά θα σας ενθουσιάσουν, ιδιαίτερα σε όσους/όσες αρέσει η νεοψυχεδελική και νεο-garage αναβίωση αλλά και σε όσους/όσες το όνομα Spacelings είναι άγνωστο. Ανάμεσα στα οκτώ κομμάτια του άλμπουμ βρίσκονται κάποια με ακουστικό ξεκίνημα και διαδοχικά ηλεκτρικά ξεσπάσματα, όπως άλλωστε συμβαίνει κυρίως στο "Not So Long Ago" και στο "Pictures". Ακόμα υπάρχει και το "Perils Of Pursuit" με έντονο garage ύφος αλλά και το "The Eye" που θα σας κεντρίσει την περιέργεια με το διακριτικό 'γέμισμα' της τρομπέτας. Τα πιο αγαπημένα μας είναι βέβαια τα "Book Of Lies" και "The Snake", τα οποία αποδίδονται με ένα μοναδικά ενισχυμένο και εξηλεκτρισμένο τρόπο. Τέλος, το "Wildside" ακολουθεί κατά πόδας στο ίδιο ύφος με μόνη διαφορά την βαριά μελωδία, αλλά και το "Jupiter Day" που συμπληρώνει το δίσκο. Ελπίζουμε πως οι Spacelings δεν θα αφήσουν κανέναν δυσαρεστημένο. Καλή ακρόαση!

ENG: Today's post is about a neo-psychedelic band from Norway called Spacelings, and their only full-length LP entitled "2000 Megatons Of Love" and released in 1988 via the Voices Of Wonder Records. Unfortunately there is absolutely no information concerning this outstanding band except on discogs where we find that they have been responsible for releasing a 7" single and a 12" e.p. prior to the "2000 Megatons Of Love".
Now as far as the music itself, the whole album is an outstanding piece of work, containing a few gems that will literally blow your mind - especially those of you who are enthusiasts of the neo-psychedelic and neo-garage revival and those to whom the name Spacelings doesn't sound familiar. Among the eight songs, there are acoustic ones with consecutive electric breakouts as it happens on "Not So Long Ago" and "Pictures", or pure garage-style tracks such as "Perils Of Pursuit". "The Eye" is another stand out song with a distinctive trumpet fill. Our favourite ones are "Book Of Lies" and "The Snake" both of which are exceptionally delivered in an intensified and electrified manner. Finally, "Wildside" follows suit with a slightly heavier tune, and "Jupiter Day" completes the LP. Hope the Spacelings won't disappoint you. Enjoy!

Μέσα στα πέντε χρόνια που λειτουργούμε το blog, σκεφτήκαμε αρκετές φορές να μνημονεύσουμε τον Ian Kevin Curtis (1957-1980) ανεβάζοντας μια ανάρτηση, σχεδόν ο,τιδήποτε. Πράγματι το πράξαμε μία φορά, αν και είναι ήδη φανερός ο θαυμασμός στο πρόσωπο του "ιδανικού αυτόχειρα" κάθε φορά που παρουσιάζουμε τη μουσική άλλων παρόμοιων καλλιτεχνών που -αναμφίβολα- επηρρεάστηκαν από τη δουλειά των Joy Division. Όμως ο Ian Curtis ως τραγουδιστής και στιχουργός τους ήταν μια εξέχουσα περίπτωση και χωρίς αυτόν οι J.D. ίσως να μην ήταν όπως τους γνωρίσαμε, ή και να μην υπήρχαν καθόλου. Αυτός όπως και ο Jim Morrisson έζησαν "κατά τον δαίμονα εαυτού" ("Possessed by a fury that burns from inside"). Ο πρόωρος θάνατος του τόν έκανε ήρωα στα μάτια κάθε έφηβου και έφηβης που ψιθύρισε, τραγούδησε τους στίχους που συνεχίζουν και θα συνεχίσουν να στοιχειώνουν τις ζωές μας.
Ο Ian Curtis ανέβηκε πρόωρα στο πάνθεον της αθανασίας για να μείνει εκεί για πάντα, μέσα από τα "The Eternal", "Decades", "Twenty-Four Hours", "Disorder", "Atmosphere", και πολλά άλλα τραγούδια, άφθαρτα στο διάβα του καιρού γιατί αφηγούνται βαθιά ανθρώπινες ιστορίες και όχι τον αυτοκτονικό παροξυσμό ενός επιληπτικού όπως κάποιοι υποστηρίζουν. Η καινοτόμος μουσική των J.D. και οι προσωπικοί στίχοι του Curtis θα είναι παντοτινά μαζί μας, κυρίως μέσω των μουσικών στους οποίους επέδρασαν άμεσα τα παραπάνω. Τέλος, υπάρχουν και αυτοί που διασκεύασαν μερικά από τα τραγούδια, κάποια από αυτά με εξαιρετικά καλό αποτέλεσμα.
Στην προηγούμενη ανάρτησή μας για τον Ian Curtis ανεβάσαμε μια συλλογή με διασκευές από Ιταλικά συγκροτήματα, η οποία τότε "κατέβηκε" κάπως απότομα (τώρα όμως την ανεβάσαμε ξανά). Σήμερα, ανεβάζουμε άλλη μία συλλογή με διασκευές από δώδεκα συγκροτήματα, αυτή τη φορά από τη Νορβηγία. Ανάμεσά τους βρίσκονται και κάποια αναγνωρίσιμα σχήματα όπως οι Beyond Dawn και οι Theatre of Tragedy που δίνουν τη δική τους ενδιαφέρουσα εκδοχή στις συνθέσεις των Joy Division. Καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: Running this blog for the past five years, it has been our intent to mention Ian Kevin Curtis (1957-1980) in a relevant post. Indeed, we have done this once. Nevertheless, our admiration towards such an outstanding "ideal suicide" cannot be subtle even when we post about similar artists who have undoubtedly been influenced by Joy Division. Ian Curtis as J.D's lead singer and lyricist was an exceptional figure; Joy Division may not have been the same without him, or they may not have been at all. He lived his short life like Jim Morrisson, true to his own spirit (Kata ton Daimona Eaftou/"Possessed by a fury that burns from inside"). Curtis' premature passing turned him into a hero for lots of people, mostlly adolescents; it is possible they have whispered or sung Curtis' haunting verses sometime in their life. Needless to say, these lyrics will keep on "haunting" our lives.
Ian Curtis rose up the pantheon of immortality to stay there forever; songs like "The Eternal", "Decades", "Twenty-Four Hours", "Disorder", "Atmosphere" and others witness that. These songs will remain timeless because the lyrics narrate true human tales and emotions and not the suicidal fits of an epileptic man, as some people argue.
Curtis' verses and Joy Division's novel music will always be here. Ever since the band's rename to New Order, there have been numerous musicians who were influenced by them. Also, there have been others who have covered J.D's songs with a few being successful at doing that.
On that previous post on Ian Curtis we had uploaded a compilation made of Italian artists who covered some Joy Division songs. You know that the link didn't stay up for too long-but now it's back on. Today, we have another Joy Division related compilation, this time including twelve bands from Norway. Some of them like Beyond Dawn and Theatre of Tragedy are better known. Despite fame or success, these bands transmit their own interesting versions of (now) classic Joy Division songs. Enjoy.

Fra Lippo Lippi: Fra Lippo Lippi LP+12'', 1986 Divine Records

Οι Fra Lippo Lippi κατάγονται από την Νορβηγία και δημιουργήθηκαν γύρω στο 1980 στην πόλη Nesodden έξω από το Oslo. Το όνομά τους προέρχεται από ένα ποίημα του Robert Browning για τον αναγεννησιακό ζωγράφο Filippo Lippi (1412-1469).
Ο πρώτος τους δίσκος με τον τίτλο "In Silence" κυκλοφόρησε το 1981 στην νορβηγική Uniton. Όπως ήδη θα γνωρίζετε οι περισσότεροι, το συγκεκριμένο άλμπουμ έχει έντονη την επιρροή των Joy Division. Είναι μια ανθολογία κομματιών τόσο τελειοποιημένων ζοφερών όσο και μελαγχολικών στο σύνολό τους. Αποτελούν δε την τέρψη του μέσου λάτρη της post punk/darkwave/goth. Από αυτά τα τραγούδια υπάρχουν κάποια που αφήνουν άμεση εντύπωση, όπως είναι τα "Out of the Ruins", "In Silence", "The Inside Veil", και φυσικά το υπνωτικό "Lost".
Μετά την κυκλοφορία του "In Silence", οι Fra Lippo Lippi συνέχισαν την πορεία τους εξερευνώντας πιο εμπορικά γούστα. Για εμάς τους ρομαντικούς η ύπαρξη και μόνον αυτού του πρώτου δίσκου είναι αρκετή. Όπως και νά'χει, να σημειώσουμε πως η ανάρτηση αφορά την επανέκδοση της Divine υπό τον τίτλο "Fra Lippo Lippi" που περιέχει και το αρχικό "In Silence" αλλά και το εκπληκτικό 12ιντσο "Say Something" του 1984.

ENG: Fra Lippo Lippi come from Norway and they were formed around 1980 in Nesodden outside of Oslo. Their name has derived from Robert Browning's poem about the Renaissance painter Filippo Lippi (1412-1469).
Their first album entitled "In Silence" was released in 1981 through the Norwegian label Uniton. As most of you already know "In Silence" LP has a deep feel of Joy Division influence. It's an actual anthology of perfectly bleak and gloomy songs working together from the first to the last for the pleasure of the average post punk/darkwave/goth fan. Among these songs there are a few which make the greatest impression such as "Out of the Ruins", "In Silence", "The Inside Veil", and of course the mesmerizing "Lost".
After releasing "In Silence", Fra Lippo Lippi went on to explore more commercial musical tastes. For us romantics, the existence of that first full-lenth LP is just compensating... Anyway, in this post we have uploaded the Divine reissue entiled "Fra Lippo Lippi" which contains both the tracks from the original "In Silence" LP and the remarkable "Say Something" 12'' single from 1984.
