Less Words/More Music Issue #14

Άθελά μας τόσο καιρό φτιάχναμε φανταστικές αναρτήσεις στο μυαλό μας, ώσπου έγινε πραγματικότητα η δέκατη τέταρτη έκδοση του "Less Words/More Music" με τρείς εξαιρετικές συλλογές που βρέθηκαν στο δρόμο μας πρόσφατα.
ENG: Αll this time we've been inadvertently planning imaginary posts through introspective routes. The fourteenth issue of "Less Words, More Music" is a product of our imaginary posts, only this time it's real. Presented in the fourteenth issue are three outstanding compilations that we've recently come across.

1. Various/5 Miles to Midnight mLP [Pax Records-1981]
Αυτή τη συλλογή την είχαμε δεί μόνο στο μπλογκ "A Viable Commercial" αλλά αυτό ήταν πολύ καιρό πριν. Στο οπισθόφυλλο αναφέρει πως περιέχονται οι The Doormen και I Scream Brothers που έχουν από δύο συμμετοχές και οι Mortuary In Wax με μία. Επίσης αναφέρεται πως υπήρχε και τέταρτη συμμετοχή από τους I Suggested Darkness αλλά το κομμάτι τους δεν μπήκε τελικά στο δίσκο λόγω τεχνικών δυσκολιών. Πάντως τα τρία συγκροτήματα που θα ακούσετε (The Doormen, I Scream Brothers και Mortuary In Wax) έρχονται από το Sheffield και πειραματίζονται με την post punk. Δεν μπορεί να είναι σύμπτωση πως στα δύο κομμάτια των I Scream Brothers έχουν κάνει την παραγωγή οι Cabaret Voltaire. Απολαύστε λοιπόν μουσική που ακόμα ακούγεται φρέσκια.
ENG: This is a compilation that we've only seen posted on the "A Viable Commercial" blog, but that was a long time ago. However, there's some info on the mini album cover writing that it consists of five songs; The Doormen and I Scream Brothers have two songs each, whereas Mortuary in Wax has only one. There's also another band mentioned, called I Suggested Darkness but they didn't make it to the pressing of the compilation due to technical setbacks. The music comes from Sheffield and is experimental post punk and it can't be a coincidence that the two songs by I Scream Brothers were produced by Cabaret Voltaire. Enjoy some music that still sounds fresh.

2. Various/The Wonderful World of Glass (volume one) LP [Glass Records-1981] 

Αυτή είναι πασίγνωστη συλλογή και εδώ είναι ο πρώτος τόμος, με συγκροτήματα από τον κατάλογο της θρυλικής Glass Records. Έχει post punk, new wave, minimal synth, καθώς και αθάνατα πειραματικά σχήματα. Μην την προσπεράσετε επειδή πρόκειται για καλή ψηφιοποίηση από βινύλιο που έχει αρκετή φθορά.
ENG: This is the first volume of a well-known and classic compilation and it contains the early roster of the legendary Glass Records. There is post punk music, there's new wave, there's minimal synth as well as a few undying experimental acts. Don't miss out, since it is a nice rip despite originating from relatively worn media.

3. Various/Never Mind The Jacksons... Here's The Pollocks mLP [Abstract Sounds-1985]
Η συλλογή "Never Mind The Jacksons... Here's The Pollocks" μπορεί να μοιάζει λιγότερο σημαντική σε σχέση με τις προηγούμενες, αλλά στην πραγματικότητα είναι αρκετά ενδιαφέρουσα καθώς αποτελείται από ευρύ φάσμα μουσικής της δεκαετίας ΄80: post punk, anarcho punk, new wave, ακόμη και απαγγελία. Αν και ο δίσκος δεν κρατάει πάνω από 30 λεπτά, δεν είναι από τις συλλογές που ξεχνά κανείς.
ENG: Compared to the previously mentioned 80's releases, "Never Mind The Jacksons... Here's The Pollocks" might seem less essential, but indeed it's an appealing one as it comprises bands from a wide range 80's rock; post punk, anarcho punk, new wave, even spoken word. Even though the whole album doesn't really last more than 30 minutes, you won't forget it until after you've listened to it.

VA: Fuck Your Dreams, This Is Heaven LP 1986, Music Box

Η συλλογή που ανεβάζουμε σήμερα φέρει τον πνευματώδη τίτλο "Fuck Your Dreams, This Is Heaven" και αποτελεί τη μουσική επένδυση της ομώνυμης ταινίας που σκηνοθέτησε ο Patrick De Geetere το 1986.
Το άλμπουμ είναι μια εξαιρετική συλλογή τραγουδιών τόσο πολύ διαφορετικών μεταξύ τους αλλά και τόσο όμοιων σε ό,τι αφορά την κοινή άποψη, την προσπάθεια και το αποτέλεσμα. Μέλη των Tuxedomoon και των Minimal Compact συνεργάστηκαν με άλλους μουσικούς όπως η Niki Mono και ο Bruce Geduldig (The Weathermen) για να δημιουργήσουν μια καινούργια συλλογή ηχητικών απολαύσεων που αποτελούνται από τραγούδια του 1960 και του 1970, δηλαδή γνωστά κομμάτια που διασκευάστηκαν με εξαίσιο τρόπο.
Οι παραπάνω μουσικοί κλήθηκαν να επεξεργαστούν και να διασκευάσουν τραγούδια από τους Jefferson Airplane, τους Pink Floyd και τον Syd Barrett, την Patti Smith, τους The Yardbirds και τους The Velvet Underground.
Δεν θεωρούμε πως αυτά τα κομμάτια "βεβηλώθηκαν" με κάποιον τρόπο, αντιθέτως ανανεώθηκαν και αποκαταστάθηκαν προς τις προτιμήσεις των οπαδών της new wave, της avant garde αλλά και άλλων πειραματικών ειδών για τα επόμενα χρόνια. Καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: The compilation we bring you in this post carries the witty title "Fuck Your Dreams, This Is Heaven" and it is the soundtrack to a video-film made by some Patrick De Geetere in 1986.
What's more, "Fuck Your Dreams" is an exceptional collection of songs so far diverse but so close to a common concept. Members from Tuxedomoon and Minimal Compact collaborated with other musicians like Niki Mono and Bruce Geduldig (The Weathermen) to create a new collection of sonic pleasures consisting of relics from the 60's and the 70's past, covering well-known songs extraordinarily transformed.
The above mentioned musicians were called to cover songs from Jefferson Airplane, Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett, Patti Smith, The Yardbirds and The Velvet Underground.
We don't believe that these songs were desecrated in any way, on the contrary, they were renewed and restored to the liking of the fans of the new wave, avant garde and experimental genre(s) for the years to come. Enjoy...

Μέσα στα πέντε χρόνια που λειτουργούμε το blog, σκεφτήκαμε αρκετές φορές να μνημονεύσουμε τον Ian Kevin Curtis (1957-1980) ανεβάζοντας μια ανάρτηση, σχεδόν ο,τιδήποτε. Πράγματι το πράξαμε μία φορά, αν και είναι ήδη φανερός ο θαυμασμός στο πρόσωπο του "ιδανικού αυτόχειρα" κάθε φορά που παρουσιάζουμε τη μουσική άλλων παρόμοιων καλλιτεχνών που -αναμφίβολα- επηρρεάστηκαν από τη δουλειά των Joy Division. Όμως ο Ian Curtis ως τραγουδιστής και στιχουργός τους ήταν μια εξέχουσα περίπτωση και χωρίς αυτόν οι J.D. ίσως να μην ήταν όπως τους γνωρίσαμε, ή και να μην υπήρχαν καθόλου. Αυτός όπως και ο Jim Morrisson έζησαν "κατά τον δαίμονα εαυτού" ("Possessed by a fury that burns from inside"). Ο πρόωρος θάνατος του τόν έκανε ήρωα στα μάτια κάθε έφηβου και έφηβης που ψιθύρισε, τραγούδησε τους στίχους που συνεχίζουν και θα συνεχίσουν να στοιχειώνουν τις ζωές μας.
Ο Ian Curtis ανέβηκε πρόωρα στο πάνθεον της αθανασίας για να μείνει εκεί για πάντα, μέσα από τα "The Eternal", "Decades", "Twenty-Four Hours", "Disorder", "Atmosphere", και πολλά άλλα τραγούδια, άφθαρτα στο διάβα του καιρού γιατί αφηγούνται βαθιά ανθρώπινες ιστορίες και όχι τον αυτοκτονικό παροξυσμό ενός επιληπτικού όπως κάποιοι υποστηρίζουν. Η καινοτόμος μουσική των J.D. και οι προσωπικοί στίχοι του Curtis θα είναι παντοτινά μαζί μας, κυρίως μέσω των μουσικών στους οποίους επέδρασαν άμεσα τα παραπάνω. Τέλος, υπάρχουν και αυτοί που διασκεύασαν μερικά από τα τραγούδια, κάποια από αυτά με εξαιρετικά καλό αποτέλεσμα.
Στην προηγούμενη ανάρτησή μας για τον Ian Curtis ανεβάσαμε μια συλλογή με διασκευές από Ιταλικά συγκροτήματα, η οποία τότε "κατέβηκε" κάπως απότομα (τώρα όμως την ανεβάσαμε ξανά). Σήμερα, ανεβάζουμε άλλη μία συλλογή με διασκευές από δώδεκα συγκροτήματα, αυτή τη φορά από τη Νορβηγία. Ανάμεσά τους βρίσκονται και κάποια αναγνωρίσιμα σχήματα όπως οι Beyond Dawn και οι Theatre of Tragedy που δίνουν τη δική τους ενδιαφέρουσα εκδοχή στις συνθέσεις των Joy Division. Καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: Running this blog for the past five years, it has been our intent to mention Ian Kevin Curtis (1957-1980) in a relevant post. Indeed, we have done this once. Nevertheless, our admiration towards such an outstanding "ideal suicide" cannot be subtle even when we post about similar artists who have undoubtedly been influenced by Joy Division. Ian Curtis as J.D's lead singer and lyricist was an exceptional figure; Joy Division may not have been the same without him, or they may not have been at all. He lived his short life like Jim Morrisson, true to his own spirit (Kata ton Daimona Eaftou/"Possessed by a fury that burns from inside"). Curtis' premature passing turned him into a hero for lots of people, mostlly adolescents; it is possible they have whispered or sung Curtis' haunting verses sometime in their life. Needless to say, these lyrics will keep on "haunting" our lives.
Ian Curtis rose up the pantheon of immortality to stay there forever; songs like "The Eternal", "Decades", "Twenty-Four Hours", "Disorder", "Atmosphere" and others witness that. These songs will remain timeless because the lyrics narrate true human tales and emotions and not the suicidal fits of an epileptic man, as some people argue.
Curtis' verses and Joy Division's novel music will always be here. Ever since the band's rename to New Order, there have been numerous musicians who were influenced by them. Also, there have been others who have covered J.D's songs with a few being successful at doing that.
On that previous post on Ian Curtis we had uploaded a compilation made of Italian artists who covered some Joy Division songs. You know that the link didn't stay up for too long-but now it's back on. Today, we have another Joy Division related compilation, this time including twelve bands from Norway. Some of them like Beyond Dawn and Theatre of Tragedy are better known. Despite fame or success, these bands transmit their own interesting versions of (now) classic Joy Division songs. Enjoy.

1. Various/Eurowave (for Rednecks) LP (Parsley-1982)

Η συλλογή "Eurowave (for Rednecks)" δεν φαίνεται να έχει αναρτηθεί σε κάποιο blog ως τώρα. Αφού την ξεθάψαμε από ένα σωρό αρχεία που είχε ψηφιοποιήσει ο Unspeakable αρκετά χρόνια πριν, είπαμε πια να την ανεβάσουμε. Κυκλοφόρησε από την Parsley Records στα 1982 και περιέχει 13 εξαιρετικά new wave κομμάτια από γνωστά αλλά και άγνωστα συγκροτήματα του Βελγίου. Μεταξύ τους οι Arbeid Adelt!, Red Zebra, T.C. Matic και Luna Twist. Να περάσετε καλά.
ENG: "Eurowave (for Rednecks)" hasn't probably been posted before. We unearthed the files from Unspeakable's vault and here it is, posted at last! It was released on Parsley Records in 1982 and contains 13 excellent new wave songs from some bands we know a little about and others of whom we know nothing about. Among the familiar names are those of Arbeid Adelt!, Red Zebra, T.C. Matic and Luna Twist. Enjoy!

2. Various/Start Swimming LP (Stiff America-1981)
Η δεύτερη συλλογή για σήμερα με τίτλο "Start Swimming" είναι από την ηχογράφηση μιας πολλά υποσχόμενης ζωντανής εμφάνισης έξι Νεοϋορκέζικων συγκροτημάτων στο Λονδίνο στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 80. Η συναυλία αυτή έλαβε χώρα στο Rainbow Theatre τον Φεβρουάριο του 1981. Προφανώς δεν ήταν μία από τις καλύτερες εμφανίσεις και ένα από τα συγκροτήματα, οι Polyrock, δεν θέλησαν να συμπεριληφθούν σε αυτή την κυκλοφορία. Έτσι ο δίσκος περιέχει κομμάτια από τους Bongos, Raybeats, dB's, Bush Tetras και τους Fleshtones. Αρχικά η συλλογή είχε ανέβει στο blog "No More Forgotten Music" αλλά τώρα το link είναι ανενεργό. Επίσης, δείτε και την άποψη ενός από τα συγκροτήματα (dB's) για εκείνη την εμφάνιση. Καλή ακρόαση.
ENG: Today's second compilation bears the title "Start Swimming" and comes from a most promising live appearance of six bands from New York in London. The concert took place at the Rainbow Theater in February 1981. Apparently, it wasn't one of the best concerts and one of the bands, Polyrock, didn't want to get included in this release, so the album contains The Bongos, The Raybeats, The dB's, Bush Tetras and The Fleshtones. "No Longer Forgotten Music" had originally posted about this LP but now the link is inactive. Futhermore, check what one of the bands (The dB's) had to say about that particular concert in 1981. Have a good listening to this one!

VA: Strangers, Still 2011, Compiled by Psychopomp

 Ας επιστρέψουμε στη μουσική...Στις 10 Σεπτέμβρη είχαμε ανεβάσει τη συλλογή "Between Today and Tomorrow" κυκλοφορία της Midnight Records, η οποία δυστυχώς δεν έμεινε για πολύ καιρό αναρτημένη. Η google την κατέβασε μετά απο τρεις ημέρες λόγω καταγγελίας/αναφοράς από κάποιο οργανισμό πνευματικών δικαιωμάτων. Προφανώς αγγίξαμε κάποια ευαίσθητη χορδή, ίσως ανεβάσαμε μια πολύ mainstream κυκλοφορία και αυτό μας κόστισε την ανάρτηση, αλλά τι να κάνουμε, αυτά συμβαίνουν.

Όμως σας οφείλουμε μια συλλογή αντί αυτής που "κατέβηκε" τόσο γρήγορα. Αποφασίσαμε να ανεβάσουμε μια δική μας συλλογή, τα κομμάτια της οποίας μαζεύτηκαν τόσο από δικά μας βινύλια, όσο και από αναρτήσεις άλλων blogs (όπως π.χ. Phoenix Hairpins). Επειδή οι συλλογές αυτές εξυπηρετούν περισσότερο προσωπικά ενδιαφέροντα και γούστα, δεν νιώθουμε άνετα να τις ανεβάσουμε. Όμως επειδή δεν υπάρχει κάτι άλλο έτοιμο επί του παρόντος, αποφασίσαμε να ανεβάσουμε μία όχι και τόσο πρόσφατη συλλογή, αφού είναι από τον Ιούνιο του 2011. Ο γενικός τίτλος είναι "Strangers, Still" και η μουσική που θα ακούσετε δεν κινείται πολύ μακριά από τις μουσικές που αναρτούμε εδώ, δηλαδή new wave, post punk, gothic rock. Υπάρχει και ένα υποτυπώδες artwork που απαρτίζεται από πίνακες του Magritte που μας έκαναν εντύπωση. Ελπίζουμε να σας αρέσει, καλή σας ακρόαση.

ENG: Let's go back to music...
On September 10 we posted a compiation entitled "Between Today and Tomorrow", released by Midnight Records. This post was deleted by google three days later due to a complaint issued by some copyright organisation. We suppose that we "pushed the wrong buttons", or perhaps posted quite a mainstream compilation, but OK, shit happens.
Nevertheless, we owe you a compilation, so we've decided to upload one of our own. The songs were gathered from our own vinyl LPs as well as from music we've found at other blogs (such as Phoenix Hairpins and more). It is true that home compiations are a matter of personal taste, so we still feel timid about posting even this one. However, we try to make this post from scratch, and it's all we have right now.
Anyway, the talk's about a compilation we assembled back in June 2011 entitled "Strangers, Still" full of music we love; new wave, post punk, gothic rock. You'll also find a rudimentary artwork inspired by impressive paintings of Magritte that fitted with our title. We hope you like it as a whole, have a good listening to this one.

VA: The Waking Dream LP 1985, Psycho Records

Για όσους φίλους του blog που παρέμειναν στις... επάλξεις και δεν πήγαν ακόμα διακοπές ανεβάζουμε μια συλλογή της ανεξάρτητης Psycho Records ειδικευμένης στα ακούσματα της αναβίωσης της ψυχεδελικής ροκ από την δεκαετία του '80 και μετά. Πρόκειται για μια αξιόλογη συλλογή με τίτλο "The Waking Dream" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1985 με εξώφυλλο ένα χαρακτηριστικό πίνακα του Casper David Friedrich. Συμμετέχουν πέντε χαρακτηριστικά συγκροτήματα από την Μεγάλη Βρετανία, οι Palace of Light, οι Mood Six, οι Sleep Creature and the Vampires, οι Green Telescope και οι Magic Mushroom Band. Η επιλογή των δεκατριών κομματιών είναι πετυχημένη καθώς περιέχονται χαρακτηριστικά "ονειρικά" ακούσματα από τα παραπάνω νεοψυχεδελικά σχήματα, μεταξύ αυτών και την εντυπωσιακή διασκευή του "I'm A Living Sickness" των Calico Wall από τους Green Telescope. Γενικά η συλλογή "The Waking Dream" είναι μια καλή εισαγωγή στην νεοψυχεδελική/νεοgarage αναβίωση και σας συνιστούμε να την ακούσετε. Καλή ακρόαση λοιπόν.

ENG: For all our friends who haven't been on vacation yet, we are uploading a compilation of the independent Psycho Records which was specialised in the psychedelic rock revival that took place in the 80's and on. It is a worthy compilation entitled "The Waking Dream" released in 1985 and illustrated with one of Casper David Friedrich's beautiful paintings. The compilation contains thirteen songs from five British bands of the era: the Palace of Light, the Mood Six, the Sleep Creature and the Vampires, the Green Telescope and the Magic Mushroom Band, all dedicated in the neo-psychedelic rock idiom. The choice of the thirteen songs has been quite effective as they all depict the typical dreamlike state of neo-psychedelia with a modern kick. There's also an impressive cover of the classic "I'm A Living Sickness" of the Calico Wall by the Green Telescope. We believe "The Waking Dream" to be a good introduction to the nepsychedelic/neogarage revival and it's highly recommended. Have a good listening to this one!

VA: The Fundamental Hymnal 1989, Fundamental Recordings

Οι 3-4 τελευταίες αναρτήσεις μας αφορούσαν συλλογές γνωριμίας με κάποιες ανεξάρτητες δισκογραφικές εταιρείες. Έτσι και αυτή η ανάρτηση δεν θα αποτελέσει έκπληξη αφού θα ασχοληθούμε με μία από τις πιο αντιπροσωπευτικές δισκογραφικές στην άλλη πλευρά του Ατλαντικού Ωκεανού, την Fundamental και πιο συγκεκριμένα την συλλογή με τίτλο "The Fundamental Hymnal" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1989 και περιέχει την αφρόκρεμα των συγκροτημάτων της. Η Fundamental έχει δώσει αρκετά δείγματα γραφής. Ας μην ξεχνάμε πως και οι πρωτοπόροι του αμερικάνικου post punk και πολύ αγαπημένοι στην Ελλάδα Savage Republic είναι ένα από τα συγκροτήματά της και οπωσδήποτε συμμετέχουν στην συλλογή. Επίσης συμμετέχουν και οι επίσης γνωστοί Shiva Burlesque, Naked Prey και Butthole Surfers, αλλά και οι λιγότερο γνωστοί Shock Therapy, Sylvia Juncosa και Eugene Chadbourne. Οι δε περισσότεροι από αυτούς σε indie-post punk-garage punk ύφος. Από την άλλη σε κάτι ιδιαίτερο, οι Drowning Pool με τις φαινομενικά-ατέλειωτες σπειροειδείς ηχομορφές δίνουν ένα ατμοσφαιρικό και ταυτόχρονα μελαγχολικό τόνο. Τέλος, κλείνοντας το δίσκο, οι "σύγχρονοι σαμάνοι" Red Temple Spirits που ακροβατούν μεταξύ new wave και progressive rock αναζητήσεων, κλείνουν την πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα αυτή συλλογή.

ENG: The last 3-4 posts were about compilations that help us get to know some alternative labels. This post will be no surprise since we are going to talk about one of the most representative labels across the Atlantic Ocean and that is Fundamental. The compilation's title is "The Fundamental Hymnal" and was released in 1989, compiling the elite of the label's catalogue. Fudamental is a label that has brought great bands to light. Let's not forget that the pioneers of the u.s. post punk Savage Republic are also one of the distinctive groups of Fundamental and they appear in this compilation too. The "Fundamental Hymnal" is also comprised of some well known groups; Shiva Burlesque, Naked Prey and Butthole Surfers and some less known ones; Shock Therapy, Sylvia Juncosa και Eugene Chadbourne, most of the above in indie-post punk-garage punk styles. In addition, there is a special treat, an unreleased song by the Drowning Pool whose seemingly-endless spiraling soundforms are distinctive of their excellent moody atmospherics. Finally, Red Temple Spirits end this interesting compilation, like "modern shamans" exploring new wavish prog rock and vice versa. Hope you like it!! Enjoy!!

VA: 4AD Dark Paths 1982, WEA Greece

Η επιρροή της ανεξάρτητης δισκογραφικής 4AD στην σημερινή ανεξάρτητη rock (και όχι μόνο) μουσική σκηνή είναι αδιαμφισβήτητη. Μέσα από τον μεγάλο κατάλογο της αναδείχθηκε πλήθος καλλιτεχνών και συγκροτημάτων με δύο κύρια χαρακτηριστικά: πρώτον, την υψηλή ποιότητα έκφρασης τόσο σε μουσικό αλλά και σε εικαστικό επίπεδο, και δεύτερον τον πρωτοποριακό συχνά ατμοσφαιρικό και ονειρικό ήχο που έγινε "σήμα κατατεθέν".

Στην Ελλάδα γνωρίσαμε την 4AD κυρίως μέσα από ελάχιστες ραδιοφωνικές εκπομπές και παρουσιάσεις δίσκων στα λίγα μουσικά περιοδικά (Ήχος, Ποπ+Ροκ), Επίσης σημαντική υπήρξε και η κυκλοφορία της συλλογής που παρουσιάζουμε σήμερα και έχει τον "διαφωτιστικό" τίτλο "Dark Paths". Ως μία κυκλοφορία μοναδική για την εποχή της αποτέλεσε το sampler-πυξίδα των μουσικά ανήσυχων, αφού αποτύπωσε επιτυχημένα περισσότερες από τις φαινομενικά διαφορετικές μουσικές τάσεις της 4AD.

Επίσης η μοναδικότητα της "Dark Paths" έγκειται και στο γεγονός πως κυκλοφόρησε το 1982 μόνο στην Ελλάδα από την WEA (η οποία τότε πρέπει να διένειμε το υλικό της 4AD). Περιέχει 13 τραγούδια από 7 συγκροτήματα: Οι Bauhaus, Rema-Rema, Modern English, Colin Newman, Dance Chapter συμμετέχουν με δύο κομμάτια, ενώ οι Mass μόνο με ένα. Επιπλέον, συμμετέχει ο David Jay (Bauhaus) με δύο κομμάτια από την καταπληκτική συνεργασία του με τον ποιητή Rene Halkett - ο ίδιος ο ποιητής απαγγέλει. Τέλος, να επισημάνουμε πως στα δύο κομμάτια των Dance Chapter έχει γίνει λάθος στους τίτλους, δηλαδή το 'Demolished Sanctuary' είναι στην πραγματικότητα το 'She' και το 'Backwards Across Thresholds' λέγεται 'Attitudes'.

Φανταζόμαστε πως οι περισσότεροι έχετε ήδη γνωρίσει την 4AD. Πιστεύουμε πως η συλλογή αυτή, αν και δεν προσφέρει κάτι καινούργιο, οπωσδήποτε δίνει μια πιο "φρέσκια' εντύπωση.

The fact that independent label 4AD influenced modern independent rock music (and not only) is undisputed. Throughout its entire long catalogue emerged a multitude of artists and groups with at least two common features. First of all, there was a higher quality of expression in both musical and artistic fields (sleeve art and presentation). Secondly, there is the avantgard-ish atmospheric and dreamy sound that became 4AD's trademark over the years. Greece got to know about 4AD mostly through a few radio shows and record presentations in a couple music magazines (Sound, Pop+Rock). Also equally important was the release of the record we present today which has the "enlightening" title "Dark Paths". This was a unique release at the time came to be a guiding sampler for those who favoured this music genre, since it depicted successfully most of the diverse trends the label expressed.

This compilation is also unique because it was released solely in Greece in 1982 through the label WEA (probably a distributor for 4AD material at the time). "Dark Paths" contains 13 songs from 7 bands-artists: Bauhaus, Rema-Rema, Modern English, Colin Newman, Dance Chapter participate with two songs each, whereas Mass have only one song. In addition, there are two songs taken from the collaboration of David Jay (Bauhaus) and the poet Rene Halkett who actually recites the poems! Closing, let's also note that the two Dance Chapter titles were mispelled and the actual titles are 'She' instead of 'Demolished Sanctuary' and 'Attitudes' instead of 'Backwards Across Thresholds'.

Most probably most of our readers already know about 4AD and what it represented back in the 1980's. Perhaps this compilation doesn't serve as a new thing, but definitely gives a "fresher" impression.

VA: Crash, A Tribute to J.G. Ballard 1993, Elfish Records

Μπήκε για τα καλά ο Σεπτέμβρης και είπαμε να ανεβάσουμε τις ταχύτητες της μουσικής με κάτι αρκετά ξεχωριστό και επίσης αρκετά ηλεκτρονικό, ρυθμικό και ταυτόχρονα σκοτεινό. Πρόκειται για μια από τις κυκλοφορίες της Elfish Records, οι παραπάνω χαρακτηρισμοί είναι αρκετά ακριβείς αφού προσδιορίζουν ακριβώς τον "ήχο" της. Είναι ένα αφιέρωμα στον cyberpunk συγγραφέα James Graham Ballard, έχει τον κύριο τίτλο "Crash" παρμένο από το ομώνυμο βιβλίο του που γράφτηκε το 1973 και που οι περισσότεροι το γνωρίζουν από την επίσης ομώνυμη κινηματογραφική μεταφορά από τον σκηνοθέτη David Cronenberg. Το αφιέρωμα αυτό με μορφή συλλογής κυκλοφόρησε το 1993 μόνο σε cd και θα μπορούσε να ήταν επιτυχώς το soundtrack για την ταινία που προαναφέραμε. Απαριθμεί 17 συμμετοχές από τον εγχώριο αλλά και παγκόσμιο ηλεκτρονικό/industrial/darkwave μουσικό χώρο. Για μερικά από αυτά (κυρίως τα εγχώρια) γνωρίζουμε πως εδώ συμμετέχουν με ακυκλοφόρητα τραγούδια, δηλαδή αρκετά σπάνιες κυκλοφορίες τους. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, τα ελληνικά group που συμμετέχουν στο ιδιότυπο αφιέρωμα είναι: οι Electroware, Slow Motion, Raw, Coti K., Diva Futura, Aima, Forward Music Quintet και τέλος, οι In Trance 95. Κάποια από αυτά όπως οι Slow Motion και οι Forward Music Quintet είναι από τα πιο παλιά στο χώρο. Βέβαια και οι υπόλποιπες συμμετοχές είναι αξιόλογες. Επιγραμματικά μόνο θα πούμε για τους επίσης παλιούς Pankow (από τα πιο επιδραστικά industrial συγκροτήματα της Ιταλίας), αλλά και για τους Nova State Conspiracy που πρόκειται για project του ήδη γνωστού μας πολυπράγμωνα Alex Novak από την πρόσφατη ανάρτηση για τους The Tempest. Περιττά τα λόγια για τους πρωτοπόρους Clock DVA από το Sheffield της Μεγ. Βρετανίας.

Συνολικά πρόκειται για μια αξιόλογη συλλογή-αφιέρωμα με θέματα κυρίως παρμένα από την cyberpunk θεματολογία. Στους λάτρεις λοιπόν της λογοτεχνίας του φανταστικού, αλλά και της σκοτεινής ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής, αλλά και σε όλους τους αναγνώστες μας ευχόμαστε καλή ακρόαση!!!

ENG: Entered September for good and we thought we could upload some music for elevated heart rate...thus we have something special for you. Something in the electronic area, rhythmical and dark at the same time. This small intro is for one of those excellent Elfish Records Compilations and the previous statement focuses exactly on the sound of Elfish, electronic and dark. This Compilation is a tribute to the master of cyberpunk fiction James Graham Ballard and it is entitled "Crash" just like Ballard's same titled novel of 1973 and the film adaptation by David Cronenberg. This tribute was released only on cd in 1993 and successfully could serve as a soundtrack to the aforementioned film, but unfortunately it is not. Totally 17 groups participate in this compilation mostly from the electronic/industrial/darkwave genres. What we know for sure is that all the songs from the Greek groups (Electroware, Slow Motion, Raw, Coti K., Diva Futura, Aima, Forward Music Quintet, In Trance 95) are previously unreleased. Also, let us mention that Slow Motion, Forward Music Quintet, Pankow, Clock DVA are some of the oldest groups tracing youth back to the early 80's. Let us add one more information, the band called Nova State Conspiracy is a project of Alex Novak whom we have already mentioned in previous posts (The Tempest).

Overall "Crash, A Tribute to J.G. Ballard" is an outstanding compilation tribute filled with cyberpunk themed music, certainly a treat for the fans of Science Fiction and dark electronic music and of course to all our readers. Enjoy!!!

VA: Red Flame... a Compilation circa 1984, Virgin-Red Flame-Ink Records

Αυτή τη φορά σας έχουμε ετοιμάσει μια συλλογή η οποία κυκλοφόρησε μόνο στην Ελλάδα περίπου το 1983 ή το 1984 από την Virgin και η οποία περιέχει συμμετοχές των ανεξάρτητων δισκογραφικών Red Flame και Ink Records με συγκροτήματα κυρίως από Μεγάλη Βρετανία και ένα από την Αυστραλία (Severed Heads). Ας πάρουμε ως αφετηρία την πρώτη πλευρά του δίσκου, δηλαδή τα κομμάτια 1-6, βλέπουμε πως κινούνται στο χώρο του κιθαριστικού new wave (Moodists, Decorators) αλλά και με funk στοιχεία (C Cat Trance από μέλη των Medium Medium) και σκοτεινό ηλεκτρονικό ήχο (David Harrow, γνωστός από τη συνεργασία του με την Anne Clark). Στην δεύτερη πλευρά (7-12) αφού ακούσουμε τους ηλεκτρονικούς Severed Heads και τους πειραματικούς Artery, μετά το τοπίο αλλάζει σε πιο jazzy-pop στυλ (Shiny Two Shiny, Cynthia Scott) αλλά και ethnic (Kabbala).
Τυπικός ο διαχωρισμός των στυλ ανά πλευρά την δεκαετία του 80, προσπαθώντας να συμπεριλάβει διάφορα ανομοιογενή είδη. Ελπίζουμε πως γενικά θα σας αρέσει η συλλογή αυτή, έστω και με τόση ποικιλία. Βέβαια ένας ακόμα λόγος που βρίσκεται εδώ κυρίως είναι για... εκθεσιακούς σκοπούς - αν και δεν πρόκειται για συλλεκτικό κομμάτι, αλλά επειδή την δεκαετία του 80 ήταν ελάχιστες οι συλλογές που κυκλοφορούσαν στην Ελλάδα. Η συγκεκριμένη μπορούμε να πούμε πως ήταν από τις πλέον αξιόλογες.

ENG: This time we have a compilation prepared. It was only released in Greece circa 1984 by Virgin Records and contained groups mainly from the U.K. and one from Australia (Severed Heads). Let's take a closer look on the first side of the record (songs 1-6). The reason why we do that is because side one is much different than side two in terms of style. So οn the first side some groups belong to the guitar oriented new wave style (Moodists, Decorators), others are more funk-oriented (C Cat Trance, once members of Medium Medium), as well as darker new wave tunes (David Harrow, also known from his collaboration with Anne Clark). On side two the musicscape is different as it begins qith somehow electronic-oriented new wave (Severed Heads) and experimental sounds (Artery). From then on it is totally different, as Shiny Two Shiny and Cynthia Scott give a much more poppish-jazzy colour and the compilation endswith an ethnic tune from Kabbala.

This was quite typical in the 80's, to mix different music styles in result to contain more heterogeneous genres in one compilation. We hope that you will like the compilation as a whole, even though it is musically diverse. However the reason we post it is also exhibitional, even though it isn't about a collector's item, those kind of compilations were rare in Greece in the 1980's. However, this particular one was one of the most notable.

VA: Something About Joy Division, Vox Pop 1990

Για τους περισσότερους που τους αρέσει η post punk, new/dark wave και παρεμφερή μουσικά είδη, ο μήνας Μάϊος είναι γνωστός για την αυτοκτονία του Ian Curtis (15/08/1956 – 18/05/1980), την ηγετική φιγούρα των Joy Division, ενός από τα πιο επιδραστικά συγκροτήματα της μετα-πάνκ περιόδου, από την δεκαετία του 80 και μέχρι σήμερα. Αποφασίσαμε λοιπόν και μείς σε ανάμνηση της μουσικής των Joy Division - επειδή ως γνωστόν με το τέλος του Ian Curtis ήρθε και το τέλος των Joy Division - να ανεβάσουμε ένα μάλλον άγνωστο άλμπουμ με διασκευές, ένα αφιέρωμα στον Curtis και τους J.D. με τίτλο "Something About Joy Division". Από την γειτονική μας Ιταλία, 12 συγκροτήματα που μουσικά φαίνονται πως ανήκουν περισσότερο στον new wave ήχο, σαφώς ελαφρύτερο από αυτόν των J.D. καταθέτουν την άποψή τους πάνω σε 12 αντίστοιχα γνωστά τραγούδια. Αυτό ακριβώς είναι που κάνει αυτό το Tribute ενδιαφέρον, η διαφορετική άποψη και όχι απαραίτητα η πιστή εκτέλεση σε τραγούδια που για πολλούς από εμάς είναι κλασικά, απαραίτητα και λίγο πολύ τα θεωρούμε ως ακρογωνιαίους λίθους της μουσικής αυτής. Aκούγοντας την πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα ακουστική εκτέλεση του "Atrocity Exhibition" από τους Subterranean Dining Rooms, ή τους The Carnival of Fools που διασκευάζουν το "Love Will Tear Us Apart" ή τους Allison Run στο "Ceremony", μπορούμε να δούμε ίσως και μια διαφορετική πλευρά στα τόσο αγαπημένα μας τραγούδια. Ακούστε το και κρίνετέ το ανάλογα.

ENG: For most people into post punk, new/dark wave music and the familiar genres the month of May is known for the suicide of Ian Curtis (15/08/1956 – 18/05/1980), singer and leader of Joy Division, one of the most influential groups of the post punk period through the 1980's and up to today. Unfortunately, the suicide of Ian Curtis was inevitably the death of J.D. as well. So in memory of their music we decided to post a rather unknown tribute to Joy Division and Ian Curtis entitled "Something About Joy Division". Twelve new wave bands from Italy not quite in the same vein as J.D's music offer their point of view upon certain well-known Joy Division songs. That exactly is what makes this tribute so interesting, because it is not about 'faithful' versions of these songs, that most of us love and consider them to be classic, elementary, more or less cornerstones of this kind of music. When listening to a most interesting version of "Atrocity Exhibition" by the Subterranean Dining Rooms, or The Carnival of Fools covering "Love Will Tear us Apart", or even Allison Run on "Ceremony", then we can see a somewhat different side to those beloved songs. Listen to it and jugde for yourselves.

VA: Random Relations 2, 1992, Elfish Records

Συνέχεια προηγούμενης ανάρτησης της 27ης Ιουλίου 2010 είναι η σημερινή και αφορά το δεύτερο μέρος της συλλογής Random Relations της ανεξάρτητης δισκογραφικής Elfish. Μελλοντικά θα αναρτήσουμε κι άλλες "χαμένες" και σπάνιες κυκλοφορίες της εταιρείας αυτής, αλλά επιλέξαμε να ξεκινήσουμε με αυτές τις δύο συλλογές Random Relations οι οποίες είναι χαρακτηριστικές όσον αφορά το μουσικό είδος και γενικά τον "ήχο" της Elfish. Η δεύτερη συνέχεια της λοιπόν, κυκλοφόρησε κι αυτή το 1992, αυτή τη φορά με περισσότερα Βορειο-Ευρωπαϊκά συγκροτήματα και λιγότερα Ελληνικά, και επίσης ανομοιογενής μουσικά όπως η πρώτη. Τα περισσότερα σχήματα κινούνται σε ηλεκτρονικό ήχο, αλλά υπάρχουν και πιο indie pop, new wave τραγούδια, και άλλα με διάθεση για πειραματισμό, όμως όλα τα τραγούδια που απαρτίζουν αυτή τη συλλογή είναι καταπληκτικά. Από τις Κάτω Χώρες συμμετέχουν οι No Comment, Lord Litter, Tresspassers W, από την Γερμανία οι Con Brio, από την Φινλανδία οι Johnny Spunky, Alice in Wasteland, Sub, και από Ελλάδα οι Raw, Nesfindonimus, Forward Music Quintet και τέλος οι Sound Devise. Στις ελληνικές συμμετοχές υπάρχουν δύο εκπλήξεις, το κομμάτι των F.M.Q. "Angels of the Steel Heart" δεν υπάρχει σε καμία άλλη επίσημη κυκλοφορία τους, μουσικά κινείται στο στυλ του τελευταίου τους δίσκου "Vanishing Soldiers" (στο οποίο θα αναφερθούμε εκτενέστερα σύντομα), ενώ οι Sound Devise βρίσκονται εδώ διασκευάζοντας το πανέμορφο "All Cats are Gray" των Cure από το άλμπουμ Faith του 1981.

In continuation of a previous post (July 27th 2010) about Elfish's Random Relations part 1, we bring you the 2nd part of Random Relations. In the near future we plan to post more "lost" and rare releases from the independent label Elfish Records, but we chose to start with these two because they are characteristic of the Elfish sound and music genre(s). Part two was released in 1992, included mostly bands/projects from Northern Europe and some from Greece, combining heterogenous music styles such as electronic, indie pop, new wave, experimental and more. From Netherlands there's the participation of No Comment, Lord Litter and Tresspassers W, from Germany there's Con-Brio, from Finland there's Johnny Spunky, Alice in Wasteland and Sub. Finally from Greece the participation of Raw, Nesfindonimus, Forward Music Quintet and Sound Devise. F.M.Q.'s song "Angels of the Steel Heart" is an unreleased gem in the musical vein of their last LP "Vanishing Soldiers" (on which we will post pretty soon). Sound Devise's song is a cover of Cure's "All Cats are Gray" from 1981's Faith LP.

Πρόκειται για την συλλογή “Unexplored 1982-1986” της άγνωστης Strange Weekend Records με άγνωστα συγκροτήματα από άγνωστες Νεο-Ζηλανδέζικες ανεξάρτητες δισκογραφικές εταιρείες με όμορφα δείγματα της εκεί new wave σκηνής της περιόδου 1982-1986. Δυστυχώς δεν μπορέσαμε να βρούμε πολλές πληροφορίες για την Strange Weekend Records, οι λιγοστές γνώσεις μας είναι από τα credits στο εσώφυλλο του δίσκου. In today's post – offered by our friend The Unspeakable – we present a record from the distant (unless you live there) New Zealand. This is about the “Unexplored 1982-1986” compilation LP released by the less-known Strange Weekend Records, including groups from other less-known independent record labels of New Zealand. It is a beautiful collection of songs of the independent new wave scene between 1982-1986. Unfortunately we could not find much about Strange Weekend Records or any of the other labels, all we know comes from the credits of the inner sleeve. If you happen to know more about the labels or the bands included, let us know too.

VA: Random Relations 1, 1992, Elfish Records

Λυπόμαστε πολύ για τη μεγάλη καθυστέρηση στις αναρτήσεις, ήταν κυρίως λόγω κάποιων τεχνικών προβλημάτων. Επανήλθαμε όμως και σας παρουσιάζουμε μια συλλογή της Elfish Records, την Random Relations 1, με διάφορους καλλιτέχνες του ανεξάρτητου Ελληνικού μουσικού στερεώματος.

Η Elfish, ήταν μια από τις πιο "αθόρυβες" αλλά όχι ασήμαντες ανεξάρτητες δισκογραφικές εταιρείες στην Ελλάδα με δράση κυρίως στα πρώτα χρόνια της δεκαετίας του 1990, με λίγες αλλά πολύ σημαντικές πληροφορίες για την ιστορία της σκηνής. Όπως καταλάβατε αυτή είναι μια γενική εισαγωγή για την Elfish, επειδή είναι δύσκολο να προλογίσει κανείς μια συλλογή, της οποίας εξ' ορισμού το υλικό είναι ανομοιογενές (....experimental, ambient, electronic, industrial, pop). Ίσως έτσι είναι πιο εύκολο να προσεγγίσουμε το μουσικό προσανατολισμό της συλλογής αυτής, η οποία είναι πολυσυλλεκτική. Ονόματα όπως οι Sub, Raw, In Trance 95, Rehearsed Dreams (ίσως η μοναδική τους κυκλοφορία εκτός του Repulsion), Coti K., Spider's Web, Sound Device, Spiros Faros, ακόμα και De Traces σε πιο dub/reggae ακούσματα.

Η πρώτη Random Relations είναι γεμάτη διαμάντια και πολύτιμα ακούσματα, όπως και η δεύτερη που θα αναρτηθεί σύντομα μαζί με άλλες κυκλοφορίες της Elfish. Μη χάσετε την ευκαιρία να τους ρίξετε μια ματιά.

We apologize for the long delay of our posts, due to certain technical issues. However we are back to bring you a compilation from Elfish Records, "Random Relations 1" compiled of various artists from the independent Greek music scene. Elfish Records was one of the most "silent" but nevertheless important independent labels in Greece, whose action was limited among the first years of the 90's releasing a few but significant numbers. You understand that this is a general introduction of the Elfish sound....experimental, ambient, electronic, industrial, pop.

It is difficult to present a music compilation of such heterogenous soundscapes. Perhaps this is the easiest way to approach the orientation of "Random Relations 1", as it includes groups(or) projects such as Sub, Raw, In Trance 95, Rehearsed Dreams (perhaps the only release except Repulsion), Coti K., Spider's Web, Sound Device, Spiros Faros, even De Traces who belong in the dub/reggae genre.

Number 1 of "Random Relations" is full of gems and valuable music. The same goes for "Random Relations 2" that we are going to post soon (along with other rare and forgotten releases by the Elfish label). Dont miss the chance of checking these out.
