Schwefel: Hot In Hong Kong LP 1988, Amigo Records

Οι Schwefel ήταν μια μπάντα που είχε τη βάση της στην Γερμανία. Παλιότερα κάναμε μια ανάρτηση για αυτούς όταν ανεβάσαμε το πρώτο τους mini LP, το "Schizophrenic Party" κυκλοφορίας 1986. Το σχήμα ήταν δημιουργία του μουσικού Norbert Schwefel (ο οποίος σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες που βρήκαμε στο ίντερνετ απεβίωσε το 2015). Σε αυτά τα πρώτα τους άλμπουμ, οι Schwefel εστίασαν κυρίως στον new wave ήχο με πλήθος επιρροές από kraut rock, κοντολογίς αυτό που λέγεται neu deutche welle.
Στην παρούσα ανάρτηση έχουμε την πρώτη τους μεγάλη κυκλοφορία με τίτλο "Hot In Hong Kong" κυκλοφορίας 1988. Έχουμε την πεποίθηση πως το συγκρότημα πήγε τη μουσική του ένα βήμα πιο πέρα, ίσως σε πιο εμπορικά μονοπάτια. Όμως, το "Hot In Hong Kong" πρόκειται για ένα δίσκο που αξίζει να ακούσετε και να προσέξετε. Σε πολλά μοιάζει στο "Schizophrenic Party" που προηγήθηκε, ωστόσο είναι εμπλουτισμένο με ευρύτερες επιρροές. Επιπλέον, περιέχει λιγότερους πειραματισμούς, άρα και λιγότερες εκπλήξεις. Όμως, είναι ένα αρκετά απολαυστικό άκουσμα καθώς είναι πιο rock, ή μάλλον πιο punk rock. Ελπίζουμε πως θα σας αρέσει.

ENG: Schwefel were a Germany-based band for whom we made a post back in 2010 about their first mini LP "Schizophrenic Party", released in 1986. Schwefel was the creation of Norbert Schwefel (who according to info we found online passed away in 2015). The band's musical focus on these early releases was mainly new wave given with a kraut rock twist (neu deutche welle).
Presently, we've got their first regular LP album entitled "Hot In Hong Kong", released in 1988. We believe the band took a step further into more commercial realms, nevertheless, "Hot In Hong Kong" is an album worth listening to and noticing, too. In many aspects it is similar to the "Schizophrenic Party" mini LP, but "Hot In Hong Kong" is also enriched with even more diverse influences. What's more, "Hot In Hong Kong" is less surprising in terms of experimentation, but that's alright, because it is enjoyable with rockier and punkier songs. We hope you like it.

Substanz: Substanz, 1985, Trikont Records

Άγνωστο παραμένει εάν ο σημερινός δίσκος, το Substanz από τους Substanz είναι συλλογή ή κανονική κυκλοφορία. Σαν σύνολο είναι ένα συνοθύλευμα πολλών ακουσμάτων που διαφοροποιούνται μεταξύ synth-pop με πειραματική διάθεση, new wave, dub, αλλά και blues!! Εκτός αυτού, και η εταιρεία που το κυκλοφόρησε (Trikont) φαίνεται πως δεν ασχολείται με ένα μόνο είδος. Είναι γεγονός ότι δεν καταφέραμε να βρούμε πολλές πληροφορίες για το συγκρότημα αυτό της NDW σκηνής. Ο λόγος που ανεβαίνει στο blog μας ένα τέτοιο άλμπουμ είναι γιατί είναι πολυδιάστατο, είναι δυσεύρετο (1000 κυκλοφορίες μόνο) με το εξώφυλλο που είναι ζωγραφισμενο εξ' ολοκλήρου στο χέρι, αλλά και γιατί περιέχει μερικά από τα ωραιότερα new wave κομμάτια, το "Falling Apart" και το "Doctor Χ". Θα ήταν κρίμα να μείνει εντελώς στην αφάνεια. Κατά τα άλλα ο δίσκος αυτός ενώ ως το κομμάτι "Zuckermelodie" έχει μια new wave/synth pop κατεύθυνση, από κει και μετά αλλάζει σε πιο dub ("True Love", "Special Tribute") και blues ("Blues for a Living") φόρμες, αυτό μας κάνει να πιστεύουμε πως πρόκειται για μια συλλογή εφ'όλης της ύλης (substance). Το rip είναι μια προσφορά του The Unspeakable όπως και οι φωτογραφίες που το συνοδεύουν. Εδώ είναι το "Substanz".

It is unknown to us whether "Substanz" by the omonymous band Sunstanz is a compilation or a regular LP. It is a patchwork of many styles, among all experimental synth-pop and new wave, dub, even blues!! Other than that, the label (Trikont) seems to deal with more than one music genre. Unfortunately it is a fact that we weren't able to find much about this NDW group. There are a few reasons why should one upload such a "difficult" and diverse LP. It is after all a multidimensional, hard to find (only 1000 hand made copies were printed), it contains two of the most beautiful new wave songs, "Falling Apart" and "Doctor X" ...it would be a pity if we left this record forgotten. Additionally, the album seems to go along a new wave/synth pop direction up until the track "Zuckermelodie". From then on the style changes to dub ("True Love", "Special Tribute") and blues ("Blues for a Living), and this is why we believe that this LP must be a compilation of all their substance. Κλείνουμε τον Ιούλιο με αυτή την ανάρτηση-συνέχεια στο διαρκές αφιέρωμα στο Νέο Γερμανικό Κύμα, το NDW. Μετά τους Schwefel, Giorbino/Eldorado, η νέα προσφορά του "The Unspeakable" που είναι ένα σπάνιο άλμπουμ από το 1982. Δεν μπορέσαμε να βρούμε πολλές πληροφορίες για τη μπάντα αυτή, παρά μόνο τα ονόματα των μελών. Tο "Hoch/tief" είναι η μοναδική τους κυκλοφορία από την AufRuhr Records οι κυκλοφορίες της οποίας κινούνται σε πειραματικό και εναλλακτικό ήχο. Πράγματι, ο ήχος είναι πειραματικός, με up-tempo διάθεση και εμφανείς επιρροές από την Kraut σκηνή. Όμως δεν είναι ελιτίστικος και σε αυτό βοηθούν αρκετά κομμάτια αρχής γενομένης με το 1+1=2 και το ομώνυμο Hoch/tief. Δώστε προσοχή στο πόσο δεμένη μπάντα είναι, πως η ντραμς κυριαρχεί στα περισσότερα κομμάτια, υποβοηθούμενη από μινιμαλιστικές πινελιές στην κιθάρα και τα πνευστά (σαξόφωνο) που δίνουν αυτή τη διαφορετική χροιά στον ήχο των Ein Jahr Garantie. Γενικότερα υπάρχει μια -θα λέγαμε- εύθυμη ατμόσφαιρα στις 12 συνθέσεις που απαρτίζουν αυτό το μικρό αριστούργημα. Όσοι έχουν τη διάθεση να πειραματιστούν και να ακούσουν κάτι διαφορετικό σίγουρα δεν έχουν τίποτα να χάσουν. Απολαύστε το !!!

It's the end of July and we decided to "close" this month by posting another sample of NDW, due to the informal tribute about this scene that we started with Schwefel and Giorbino/Eldorado. It is about a rare LP from 1982 also offered by "The Unspeakable". The truth is that we weren't able to find lots of information about this group except for the band members. "Hoch/tief" LP is their one and only release from AufRuhr Records whose releases deal with experimental/alternative music. "Hoch/tief" proves its experimental roots as each song reveals an up-tempo mood and distinct influences from the Kraut scene. However not as elitist, while some of the songs may sound 'friendlier': the intriguing guitar of "1+1=2" and the same titled "Hoch/tief". Pay attention to how tied up this band is, and how the drums is the protagonist of most of the songs, assisted by minimal guitar licks and the dominant saxophone. All these instruments together colour the music of Ein Jahr Garantie. The fun atmosphere in all 12 compositions adds to it. Whoever is in the mood of experimenting with their listening taste and want to listen to something different have nothing to lose. Enjoy !!!

Giorbino & Eldorado: Ivanhoe!, Zick Zack Records 1981

Η σημερινή ανάρτηση μοιάζει λίγο σαν συνέχεια της προηγούμενης που αφορούσε τους Schwefel ως δείγμα της NDW σκηνής. Σήμερα παραθέτουμε άλλο ένα δείγμα της underground αυτής σκηνής, επίσης προσφορά του "The Unspeakable". Πρόκειται για μια ιδιότυπη συνεργασία με λαμπρό αποτέλεσμα, ο Andy Giorbino και Jaki Eldorado, δύο "ομιχλώδεις" φιγούρες της Γερμανικής new wave σκηνής ένωσαν τις δυνάμεις τους και έμπνευση φτιάχνοντας το "Ivanhoe!", ένα (σχεδόν) instrumental LP, καθαρόαιμο post-punk, με ελάχιστα ορατά ψήγματα-πινελιές επιρροών από ψυχεδέλεια και kraut rock. Μιλάμε για ένα "επικό" άλμπουμ κομματιών τα οποία με κανένα τρόπο δεν κοιμίζουν τον ακροατή. Έντεχνα "γεννούν" συνεχώς ευρηματικές μουσικές ροές με συνοδούς τα μινιμαλιστικά riff της κιθάρας καθώς και την καθοριστική αλλά εντέχνως χαλαρή rhythm session. Κάθε ένα από τα κομμάτια αυτά δίνει την εντύπωση πως είτε είναι μια ζωντανή εκτέλεση, ή πίσω του υπάρχει μια ομάδα μουσικών που απλά "τζαμάρει" και δημιουργεί ας πούμε "τυχαία" καλοκουρδισμένα πρότυπα post-punk μουσικής. Κλείνοντας να προσθέσουμε ότι συνολικά το "Ivanhoe!" δεν είναι ένα "βαρύ" άκουσμα και δεν έχει πρόθεση να προβληματίσει τον ακροατή, αλλά αντίθετα να τον βάλει σε μια πιο 'up-tempo" διάθεση.

SOMETHING ABOUT THE ALBUM....

Today's post is a continuation of the last concerning Schwefel as our first NDW specimen. Today we are presenting another sample of this underground scene, again offered by "The Unspeakable". It is about an odd collaboration with a brilliant outcome between Andy Giorbino and Jaki Eldorado two "obscure" characters of the German new wave scene, as they joined forces and inspiration in making "Ivanhoe!", an (almost) instrumental LP of pure post punk, with a few distinctive traces of psychedelia and kraut rock. We are talking about an "epic" music album of songs which don't let the listener get bored, because they are constantly give birth to imaginative music flows accompanied by the minimal guitar riffs as well as the determined but arty loose rhythm section. Each one of the tracks gives either the impression of being a live act, or that the musicians are just "jamming" along, creating random well-tuned standards of post punk music. On the whole, "Ivanhoe!" isn't a "heavy" listening and it's not intendedto make the listener concerned of anything in particular, but instead to introduce them into an up-tempo mood.

Schwefel "Schizophrenic Party", 1986, Schuldige Scheitel Records

Σήμερα παρουσιάζουμε κάτι διαφορετικό.....όχι όμως τόσο πολύ ώστε να αλλάξει το χαρακτήρα του blog. Από τώρα και μετά εγκαινιάζουμε και την ανάρτηση-παρουσίαση δίσκων που δεν ανήκουν στο ελληνικό ρεπερτόριο. Δηλαδή οι της ελληνικής προέλευσης με τους της αλλοδαπής προέλευσης δίσκων θα εναλλάσονται, και αυτό θα γίνεται και για τον εμπλουτισμό του blog αλλά και γιατί τα album της διεθνούς σκηνής που θα παρουσιάζουμε κατά καιρούς έχουν το χαρακτήρα του σπάνιου και του δυσεύρετου για τα ελληνικά δεδομένα.

Εν κατακλείδι, σε αυτή την ανάρτηση θέλουμε και να παρουσιάσουμε και την νέα συμμετοχή του φίλου The Unspeakable, ο οποίος θα συνεισφέρει στο blog μας, με δικά του rip, αρκετό υλικό. Όπως καταλαβαίνετε αυτό επίσπευσε την ανάγκη για αναρτήσεις από το διεθνές ρεπερτόριο.

Το πρώτο άλμπουμ το οποίο προσφέρει και ο φίλος Unspeakable έρχεται από την Γερμανία, και είναι το "Schizophrenic Party" των Schwefel.

Οι Schwefel ανήκουν στο νέο κύμα της Γερμανικής ρόκ, δήλαδή την Γερμανική "new deutche welle" σκηνή. Στο μέλλον θα παρουσιάσουμε αρκετά από αυτή. Είναι η post punk/new wave σε Γερμανική έκδοση, με την πλούσια επιρροή του Kraut Rock και συγκροτημάτων όπως οι Can, Amon Duul, κ.α. Οι Schwefel είναι η δημιουργία του Norbert Schwefel ο οποίος είναι και ο βασικός συνθέτης-τραγουδιστής και φαίνεται πως τουλάχιστον στις πρώτες κυκλοφορίες έχει τον πλήρη έλεγχο των συνθέσεων και της ενορχήστρωσης. Από το πρώτο ομώνυμο κομμάτι νοιώθει κανείς την ενέργεια του συγκροτήματος. Οι χαρακτηριστικά κοφτές κιθάρες-απομεινάρι της πάνκ, παίρνουν που και που μια ψυχεδελική χροιά.

Στο δεύτερο κομμάτι ο ήχος είναι πιο συγκεκριμένος, και το new wave σαξόφωνο εμπλουτίζει τη μελωδία. Επίσης το τρίτο και τέταρτο κομμάτι κινούνται στο ίδιο μοτίβο, με έντονες τις kraut-ψυχεδελικές αποχρώσεις. Και εδώ ερχόμαστε στο τελευταίο (σχεδόν) instrumemtal κομμάτι του "Schizophrenic Party", είναι το καλύτερο κλείσιμο.... σαξόφωνο και κιθάρα μπλέκουν τις μελωδίες τους σε έναν αυτοσχεδιαστικό παροξυσμό και έτσι χαρακτηριστικά τελειώνει το "Πάρτυ".

IN OTHER WORDS...

Today we present something different.....but not completely, in terms of altering the blog's nature. From now on we inaugurate the posting/presentation of records that don't belong in the greek underground repertoire, so we will alternate greek and non greek posts. The general purpose is first of all to enrich the blog, and secomndly to present foreign (non-greek) LPs that are rare and/or hard to find in Greece.

Concluding, we also want to present and welcome our friend "The Unspeakable" who will also contribute his own rips to the blog - hope they are many.

"The Unspeakable's" fist "gift" is an LP that comes from Germany's post punk scene and it's called "Schizophrenic Party" by a band named Schwefel. They belong to the new wave of German independent scene, also known as "new deutche welle". In the future we will present more bands from this scene. Let me note here only that the sound of "new deutche welle" independent scene is also influenced by Germany's legendary Kraut Rock scene (Can, Amon Duul, etc). Schwefel are the "child" of Norbert Schwefel who was the sole composer/singer of the group - at least in the first years. Starting with the first song one can feel Schwefel's energy flowing. Sharp guitar playing is a characteristic of the punk groups, but in this case the sound has

a more psychedelic hue. The drums are loud and compelling. The 2nd song has a more specific post punk sound , with the new wavi-sh saxophone enriching the tune. The 3rd and 4th songs are more or less in the same direction, of dim kraut/psychedelic rock influences. The last song the almost instrumental proves to be the best way to end a party (schizophrenic it is...), saxophone, guitar and drums entangled into a paroxysmic improvisation and calls the party over.
