Simonics: Under A Glass Bell 12'' ep Arcadia 1984 & In This Heat/Insect Sun 12'' edition Thin Sliced Records 1985

Άλλη μία καθυστερημένη ανάρτηση που είναι ταυτόχρονα και αποχαιρετισμός στο 2018. Ανεβάζουμε τους Simonics ένα σχήμα από Μεγ. Βρετανία που ανακαλύψαμε τυχαία. Αν και είναι άγνωστοι και οι πληροφορίες για αυτούς λιγοστές, έχουν κυκλοφορήσει ωραία και ενδιαφέρουσα μουσική. Το μουσικό τους ύφος είναι δύσκολο να το περιγράψει κανείς με λόγια, αλλά θα λέγαμε πως είναι new wave με μια δόση πειραματισμού (στο discogs τους έχει και την ταμπέλα gothic rock).
Οι περισσότερες πληροφορίες για τους Simonics βρέθηκαν μετά από πολύ ψάξιμο στην προσωπική ιστοσελίδα της μουσικού Virginia Astley στο facebook. Εν συντομία, η Virginia Astley συμμετείχε στην δημιουργία του πρώτου 12'' με τίτλο "Under A Glass Bell" το 1984. Μας λέει επίσης πως το συγκρότημα αποτελούνταν από δύο μέλη με το όνομα Simon (Simon Walker kai Simon Smith) και τρία μέλη με το όνομα Nick (Nick Page, Nick Smith και Nick Pretzel), και έτσι ονομάστηκαν Simonics.
Οι μουσικοί που απαρτίζαν τους Simonics ήταν μαζί στο παρελθόν σε μια κολεκτίβα 13 μουσικών υπό το όνομα Enemies of the Earth, όπου συμμετείχε και η Astley.
Τώρα όσον αφορά το ουσιαστικό μέρος της ανάρτησης μας, τη μουσική. Ανεβάζουμε το πρώτο τους 7ιντσο "In This Heat/Insect Sun" (αρχικής κυκλοφορίας 1982) στην 12ιντση έκδοση του 1985 με επιπλέον δύο κομμάτια, τα "Medium Sweet Lizard" και "Suffocate Waters" που αποτελούσαν το soundtrack της ταινίας "Kamil". Επίσης θα βρείτε και το προαναφερόμενο "Under A Glass Bell" προφανώς εμπνευσμένο από το ομώνυμο βιβλίο της Αναΐς Νιν, όπου εκτός από το ομώνυμο κομμάτι, υπάρχουν και τα "Fear Is The Key" και "Kiss Your Hands And Weep". Έχουμε στριμώξει και τις δύο αυτές κυκλοφορίες σε ένα αρχείο για να σας είναι πιο βολικό στο κατέβασμα.

ENG:Here's another delayed post serving as a farewell to 2018. We're posting some stuff from a UK band called Simonics whose music we came across by accident, since they are not a renowned band and this accounts for not being able to find substantial info on them. Despite their being rather unknown, they have produced some interesting music. It is also hard to describe their music style, as it seems that they have been experimenting, but roughly we'd describe them as new wave (discogs has them under 'Goth Rock' as well).
Any info we've got on Simonics comes from Virginia Astley's facebook page where she writes a few things about the band. To cut the long story short, Astley was involved in the making of the band's first 12'' single "Under A Glass Bell" in 1984.
Anyway, the band comprised of two Simons (Simon Walker and Simon Smith) and three Nicks (Nick Page, Nick Smith and Nick Pretzel) hence the name Simonics. The band was formed from the ashes of an earlier 13 piece collective called Enemies of the Earth in which Astley was also involved.
Let's talk about the most significant part of this post, which is the music. We've uploaded for you Simonics' first 7'' single "In This Heat/Insect Sun" initially released in 1983, but here in the form of a 12'' with the addition of two more songs "Medium Sweet Lizard", "Suffocate Waters" which served as soundtrack to the film "Kamil" and re-released in 1985. We have also included their first 12'' single entitled "Under A Glass Bell" obviously inspired by Anaïs Nin's 1944 book. The 12'' single also includes the songs "Fear Is The Key" and "Kiss Your Hands And Weep". For convenience purposes we've crammed these two releases in one file, so click on either of the two titles above.

Less Words/More Music Issue #14

Άθελά μας τόσο καιρό φτιάχναμε φανταστικές αναρτήσεις στο μυαλό μας, ώσπου έγινε πραγματικότητα η δέκατη τέταρτη έκδοση του "Less Words/More Music" με τρείς εξαιρετικές συλλογές που βρέθηκαν στο δρόμο μας πρόσφατα.
ENG: Αll this time we've been inadvertently planning imaginary posts through introspective routes. The fourteenth issue of "Less Words, More Music" is a product of our imaginary posts, only this time it's real. Presented in the fourteenth issue are three outstanding compilations that we've recently come across.

1. Various/5 Miles to Midnight mLP [Pax Records-1981]
Αυτή τη συλλογή την είχαμε δεί μόνο στο μπλογκ "A Viable Commercial" αλλά αυτό ήταν πολύ καιρό πριν. Στο οπισθόφυλλο αναφέρει πως περιέχονται οι The Doormen και I Scream Brothers που έχουν από δύο συμμετοχές και οι Mortuary In Wax με μία. Επίσης αναφέρεται πως υπήρχε και τέταρτη συμμετοχή από τους I Suggested Darkness αλλά το κομμάτι τους δεν μπήκε τελικά στο δίσκο λόγω τεχνικών δυσκολιών. Πάντως τα τρία συγκροτήματα που θα ακούσετε (The Doormen, I Scream Brothers και Mortuary In Wax) έρχονται από το Sheffield και πειραματίζονται με την post punk. Δεν μπορεί να είναι σύμπτωση πως στα δύο κομμάτια των I Scream Brothers έχουν κάνει την παραγωγή οι Cabaret Voltaire. Απολαύστε λοιπόν μουσική που ακόμα ακούγεται φρέσκια.
ENG: This is a compilation that we've only seen posted on the "A Viable Commercial" blog, but that was a long time ago. However, there's some info on the mini album cover writing that it consists of five songs; The Doormen and I Scream Brothers have two songs each, whereas Mortuary in Wax has only one. There's also another band mentioned, called I Suggested Darkness but they didn't make it to the pressing of the compilation due to technical setbacks. The music comes from Sheffield and is experimental post punk and it can't be a coincidence that the two songs by I Scream Brothers were produced by Cabaret Voltaire. Enjoy some music that still sounds fresh.

2. Various/The Wonderful World of Glass (volume one) LP [Glass Records-1981] 

Αυτή είναι πασίγνωστη συλλογή και εδώ είναι ο πρώτος τόμος, με συγκροτήματα από τον κατάλογο της θρυλικής Glass Records. Έχει post punk, new wave, minimal synth, καθώς και αθάνατα πειραματικά σχήματα. Μην την προσπεράσετε επειδή πρόκειται για καλή ψηφιοποίηση από βινύλιο που έχει αρκετή φθορά.
ENG: This is the first volume of a well-known and classic compilation and it contains the early roster of the legendary Glass Records. There is post punk music, there's new wave, there's minimal synth as well as a few undying experimental acts. Don't miss out, since it is a nice rip despite originating from relatively worn media.

3. Various/Never Mind The Jacksons... Here's The Pollocks mLP [Abstract Sounds-1985]
Η συλλογή "Never Mind The Jacksons... Here's The Pollocks" μπορεί να μοιάζει λιγότερο σημαντική σε σχέση με τις προηγούμενες, αλλά στην πραγματικότητα είναι αρκετά ενδιαφέρουσα καθώς αποτελείται από ευρύ φάσμα μουσικής της δεκαετίας ΄80: post punk, anarcho punk, new wave, ακόμη και απαγγελία. Αν και ο δίσκος δεν κρατάει πάνω από 30 λεπτά, δεν είναι από τις συλλογές που ξεχνά κανείς.
ENG: Compared to the previously mentioned 80's releases, "Never Mind The Jacksons... Here's The Pollocks" might seem less essential, but indeed it's an appealing one as it comprises bands from a wide range 80's rock; post punk, anarcho punk, new wave, even spoken word. Even though the whole album doesn't really last more than 30 minutes, you won't forget it until after you've listened to it.

Drowning Pool: Aphonia LP 1989, Fundamental Recordings/Nate Starkman & Son

Με αυτή την ανάρτηση, δεν θα υπάρχει καμία αμφιβολία πως οι Drowning Pool από το Λος Άντζελες των Η.Π.Α. είναι ένα συγκρότημα που εκτιμάμε πάρα πολύ. Σύμφωνα με την ημερομηνία κυκλοφορίας του, το  LP "Aphonia" πρέπει να είναι η τελευταία τους κυκλοφορία. Επιπλέον, έχει την ιδιαιτερότητα να περιέχει αποκλειστικά ορχηστρικά κομμάτια (aphonia=αφωνία σημαίνει έλλειψη φωνής/φωνητικών). Πράγματι, έτσι είναι φτιαγμένος αυτός ο δίσκος, εκτός από το ότι οι μοναδικές φωνές που ακούγονται είναι προηχογραφημένες και έχουν μιξαριστεί στα τραγούδια.
Άσχετα από αυτό, η μουσική παραμένει εξαιρετική, ονειρική και απόκοσμη όπως συνήθως. Κάθε κομμάτι αποκαλύπτει μια ατμοσφαιρική πτυχή που είναι αδύνατο να τη συναντήσεις αλλού. Εδώ βρίσκεται και το "Black Baghdad", ένα από τα πιο επιβλητικά τους, που ήταν και στη συλλογή "Fundamental Hymnal".
Ευχόμαστε καλή ακρόαση στο πλέον αντισυμβατικό "Aphonia". Ευελπιστούμε πως αυτή δεν θα είναι και η τελευταία μας ανάρτηση αναφορικά με τους Drowning Pool, αλλά πως θα ακολουθήσει και η διπλή συλλογή "Satori" εν ευθέτω χρόνω.

ENG: Upon posting this, there'll be no doubt left that Drowning Pool from Los Angeles, U.S.A. are a band that we highly appreciate. According to the date of release, the "Aphonia" LP must be their final release. What's more, the title suggests that it is an album of instrumental songs (aphonia is greek for the absence of voice). Indeed that is the case as there aren't any vocals except for pre-recorded voice samples mixed within the songs.
Other than that, the music remains as extraordinary, dreamy and otherworldly as always. Each song reveals an atmospheric aspect that is almost unparalleled to match. Included is "Black Baghdad", one of their finest and most imposing songs, which was also in the "Fundamental Hymnal" compilation.
Have a good listening to the unconventional "Aphonia" LP. Hopefully, this isn't going to be our last post on Drowning Pool as we still have the double compilation "Satori" to offer in due time.

Phillip Boa & The Voodoo Club: Thirty Years of Blank Expression LP 1988, Di Di Music

Ο Phillip Boa είναι ένας Γερμανός πολυπράγμων μουσικός με ευρεία δραστηριότητα. Ίδρυσε το alternative rock/new wave/avantgarde σχήμα Phillip Boa & The Voodoo Club το 1985 και από τότε κυκλοφόρησε αρκετούς δίσκους.

Το 1989 η ελληνική ανεξάρτητη δισκογραφική Di Di Music έβγαλε μια συλλογή με τίτλο "Thirty Years Of Blank Expression" που περιέχει σκόρπια κομμάτια από τα άλμπουμ "Philister" (1985) και "Aristocracie" (1986). Στη συλλογή περιέχεται και ένα κομμάτι-συνεργασία ("Spike Milligans Tape Recorder") με τους Membranes από το 12'' miniLP "Spike Milligans Tape Recorder".
Η μουσική των Phillip Boa & The Voodoo Club κυμαίνεται από πιασάρικη, ατμοσφαιρική, μέχρι και rock ή punk rock. Είναι δηλαδή γεμάτη με αντιθέσεις. Αυτό δείχνει μια δυναμική πειραματισμού που είναι έκδηλη σχεδόν σε όλα τα κομμάτια της συλλογής. Το "Thirty Years Of Blank Expression" μπορεί να είναι όλα τα παραπάνω, δηλαδή ένα άλμπουμ που συνδυάζει την ποικιλία, την τελειότητα και την ιδιοτροπία. Οπότε η αξιολόγηση εξαρτάται από τον ακροατή. ENG: Phillip Boa is a German musician of varied skill and activity. He founded the alternative rock/new wave/avantgarde band Phillip Boa & The Voodoo Club in 1985 and released a number of records ever since.
In 1989, the Greek label Di Di Music issued a compilation entitled "Thirty Years Of Blank Expression" that contained songs taken from the albums "Philister" and "Aristocracie" released in 1985 and 1986 respectively. The compilation also contains a collaboration song ("Spike Milligans Tape Recorder") with the Membranes from their 12'' miniLP "Spike Milligans Tape Recorder".
Phillip Boa & The Voodoo Club's music can be catchy, atmospheric and rocky too. In other words, it is full of contrasts. This manifests from lots of experimental potential, apparent in most of the songs here. "Thirty Years Of Blank Expression" may be all the above; an album of diversity,  excellence and oddity. Therefore, it appeals to your senses to appreciate the songs. Enjoy!

VA: Fuck Your Dreams, This Is Heaven LP 1986, Music Box

Η συλλογή που ανεβάζουμε σήμερα φέρει τον πνευματώδη τίτλο "Fuck Your Dreams, This Is Heaven" και αποτελεί τη μουσική επένδυση της ομώνυμης ταινίας που σκηνοθέτησε ο Patrick De Geetere το 1986.
Το άλμπουμ είναι μια εξαιρετική συλλογή τραγουδιών τόσο πολύ διαφορετικών μεταξύ τους αλλά και τόσο όμοιων σε ό,τι αφορά την κοινή άποψη, την προσπάθεια και το αποτέλεσμα. Μέλη των Tuxedomoon και των Minimal Compact συνεργάστηκαν με άλλους μουσικούς όπως η Niki Mono και ο Bruce Geduldig (The Weathermen) για να δημιουργήσουν μια καινούργια συλλογή ηχητικών απολαύσεων που αποτελούνται από τραγούδια του 1960 και του 1970, δηλαδή γνωστά κομμάτια που διασκευάστηκαν με εξαίσιο τρόπο.
Οι παραπάνω μουσικοί κλήθηκαν να επεξεργαστούν και να διασκευάσουν τραγούδια από τους Jefferson Airplane, τους Pink Floyd και τον Syd Barrett, την Patti Smith, τους The Yardbirds και τους The Velvet Underground.
Δεν θεωρούμε πως αυτά τα κομμάτια "βεβηλώθηκαν" με κάποιον τρόπο, αντιθέτως ανανεώθηκαν και αποκαταστάθηκαν προς τις προτιμήσεις των οπαδών της new wave, της avant garde αλλά και άλλων πειραματικών ειδών για τα επόμενα χρόνια. Καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: The compilation we bring you in this post carries the witty title "Fuck Your Dreams, This Is Heaven" and it is the soundtrack to a video-film made by some Patrick De Geetere in 1986.
What's more, "Fuck Your Dreams" is an exceptional collection of songs so far diverse but so close to a common concept. Members from Tuxedomoon and Minimal Compact collaborated with other musicians like Niki Mono and Bruce Geduldig (The Weathermen) to create a new collection of sonic pleasures consisting of relics from the 60's and the 70's past, covering well-known songs extraordinarily transformed.
The above mentioned musicians were called to cover songs from Jefferson Airplane, Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett, Patti Smith, The Yardbirds and The Velvet Underground.
We don't believe that these songs were desecrated in any way, on the contrary, they were renewed and restored to the liking of the fans of the new wave, avant garde and experimental genre(s) for the years to come. Enjoy...

Fourwaycross: Fourwaycross LP, 1988 Nate Starkman & Son

Στο παρελθόν, είχαμε αναρτήσει κάποια άλμπουμ από post punk σχήματα της Δυτικής Ακτής των Η.Π.Α., όπως τους Sleepers και τους BPeople και γνωρίζουμε καλά τη σημασία της ύπαρξής τους στο παγκόσμιο μουσικό γίγνεσθαι. Καιρό τώρα θέλαμε να ανεβάσουμε τους Fourwaycross και επιτέλους το κάναμε. Και για να είμαστε πιο συγκεκριμένοι, η σημερινή ανάρτηση αφορά την πρώτη ομότιτλη κυκλοφορία τους, η οποία  αρχικά εμφανίστηκε σε κασέτα το 1985 από τη δική τους δισκογραφική, Motiv Communications και επανακυκλοφόρησε το 1988 σε βινύλιο από την Nate Starkman & Son.

Το εξαιρετικό αυτό ντεμπούτο αποτελείται από οκτώ κομμάτια διανθισμένα με όργανα και μελωδίες που δεν έχουμε συνηθίσει στην post punk όπως για παράδειγμα το τσέλο που ακούγεται στο εισαγωγικό κομμάτι και μας προϊδεάζει για τη συνέχεια. Επιπλέον, το φλάουτο διατρέχει έξυπνα τις νευρικές post punk γραμμές και εμπλουτίζει τις συνθέσεις, δίνοντας μια άλλη προοπτική. Αυτοί οι πειραματισμοί έχουν όντως νόημα αν σκεφτεί κανείς πως από συνθετικής άποψης οι Fourwaycross δεν ήταν ποτέ στάσιμοι και διαρκώς άλλαζαν τον ήχο τους από άλμπουμ σε άλμπουμ.. Σας παρακινούμε να ακούσετε και τις επόμενες ενδιαφέρουσες κυκλοφορίες τους.

ENG: In previous posts, we had referred to some bands/albums from the U.S. West Coast like The Sleepers and BPeople knowing how important those bands were. We have always wanted to post something on Fourwaycross and finally we have. Getting into the point, today's blogspost is about Fourwaycross' first same-titled LP. Initially it was released on tape in 1985 on their own label  Motiv Communications, and was reissued in 1988 on Nate Starkman & Son.
This exceptional debut is full of songs adorned with the aid of instruments and tunes we haven't been accustomed to in post punk music. The cello on the introductory track sets the mood up for what comes next. In a few songs there's the flute enriching and blending into the edgy post punk compositions. Experimentations like these actually make sense if you take in account that Fourwaycross kept evolving their music constantly in everything they did from then on. We urge you to listen to their albums after this one.

Thanasis Zlatanos: Datura LP, 1993 Graffiti

Όπως είχαμε υποσχεθεί αρκετούς μήνες πριν, ετοιμάσαμε και το δεύτερο δίσκο του Θανάση Ζλατάνου με τον τίτλο "Datura". Το άλμπουμ κυκλοφόρησε το 1993 από τη δισκογραφική Graffiti. Πρόκειται για ένα βήμα ακόμη πιο πέρα από την ηλεκτρονική μουσική και πιο κοντά στην ατμοσφαιρική και ακουστική new age/instrumental με μεγαλειώδη προοπτική. Σκεφτείτε πως το κομμάτι "The Crystal Sight" παίρνει το χώρο ολόκληρης της πρώτης πλευράς με σχεδόν είκοσι λεπτά διάρκεια και με τουλάχιστον τέσσερις διαφορετικές αλλαγές θέματος. Αν μη τι άλλο, πρόκειται για ένα ενδιαφέρον εγχείρημα, ενώ η δεύτερη πλευρά αποτελείται από εξίσου ενδιαφέροντα και ποικίλα ακούσματα όπως είναι το "Gordian Knot", κατά τη γνώμη μας το αποκορύφωμα του "Datura". Καλή ακρόαση, είμαστε σίγουροι πως πολλοί θα ανυπομονείτε να το ακούσετε.

ENG: As promised several months ago, we've prepared the second album by Thanasis Zlatanos entitled "Datura". The album was released in 1993 through the Graffiti label. Its sound is a step further away from electronic music and at the same time a step closer to atmospheric and acoustic new age/instrumental with grand perspective. Have in mind that the song "The Crystal Sight" is almost twenty minutes long featuring at least four different themes. Overall, "Datura" is a bold attempt and the second side proves to be as interesting and diversive as the first, namely in "Gordian Knot" which in our opinion is the highlight of the album. Enjoy this one, especially those who have been expecting it for quite some time.

Drowning Pool: Untitled LP, 1986 Viva Records

Άλλο ένα συγκρότημα που μας αρέσει ιδιαίτερα είναι οι Drowning Pool. Προηγουμένως έχουμε αναρτήσει και άλλες δουλειές του πολύ σημαντικού αμερικάνικου σχήματος. Αυτή τη φορά ανεβάζουμε το άλμπουμ "Untitled", που κυκλοφόρησε και σε κασέτα το 1986 από την Scarface Charley Records. Το πλέον εμπλουτισμένο με τρία επιπλέον κομμάτια LP κυκλοφόρησε στην ιταλική Viva Records (οι περισσότεροι θα την γνωρίζετε από τις δύο συλλογές Viva Los Angeles) που είναι επίσης γνωστό και σαν "The Bloody Boy" λόγω του εξωφύλλου του. 'Οπως είχαμε αναφέρει και στην παλιότερη ανάρτησή μας για τους D.P. η μουσική τους αποτελεί εξαιρετικό δείγμα καθώς συνδυάζει αιθέρια και γήινα στοιχεία με μοναδικό και υπερβατικό τρόπο. Θα ακούσετε το "Ritual Regeneration" να συνενώνεται με το "Toy Soldiers", με αποτέλεσμα να δημιουργείται ένα 13-λεπτο συμπαγές αριστούργημα. Υπάρχουν επίσης τα μυστηριακά και πρωτότυπα "Muted Streak", "Art of Waiting" και "Fired from Within", τα οποία κατατάσσονται στα αγαπημένα μας εδώ και αρκετό καιρό. Προτείνουμε να ακούσετε το "Untitled" όσοι είστε οπαδοί των D.P. αλλά και όσοι είστε οπαδοί της αισθητικής που αποπνέουν οι πρώτες κυκλοφορίες της 4AD.

ENG: Here's another band we enjoy listening to, quite a lot indeed. We have previously posted stuff from the Drowning Pool, which we consider to be one of the most important U.S. bands in the independent post punk/experimental genre. This time we're posting the album "Untitled" also released on tape in 1986 via Scarface Charley Records. The LP which is expanded by three extra songs was issued by the Italian label Viva Records in 1988 (Viva Records is also known for the Viva Los Angeles compilations). "Untitled" is also known as "The Bloody Boy" mostly because of its front cover. As we've already mentioned in our post of "Drowning Pool" LP and "Nierika" mLP more than two years ago, their music is extraordinary because it combines both spiritual and earthly aspects in a unique and transcendental way. The album includes the song "Ritual Regeneration" which merges with "Toy Soldiers" in one lengthy and solid masterpiece. A triad of stunningly eerie songs, "Muted Streak", "Art of Waiting" and "Fired from Within" have also been on the repeat for quite a long time now. It is recommended for the fans of D.P. as well as the fans of early 4AD aesthetics.

Less Words/More Music Issue #6

ENG: Here's four 12'' e.ps that we keep listening to during the past weeks. Some of them might've been posted elsewhere. These are fresh rips, though. Enjoy!

1. Pink Military: Blood & Lipstick 12'' e.p. (Eric's-1979)
Οι Pink Military ήταν βραχύβιο new wave/post punk σχήμα από το Liverpool της Αγγλίας. Το συγκρότημα δημιουργήθηκε το 1978 από την τραγουδίστρια των Big In Japan. Αρχικά είχαν κυκλοφορήσει το ζωντανό e.p. "Buddha Waking Disney Sleeping" και με ελαφρώς διαφορετικό όνομα (ως Pink Military Stand Alone). Στη συνέχεια και αφού σταθεροποίησαν το όνομά τους σε Pink Military, κυκλοφόρησαν το εξαιρετικό e.p. "Blood & Lipstick", και ακολούθησε το ολοκληρωμένο LP με τίτλο "Do Animals Believe In God?". Από τα δύο τελευταία επιλέξαμε να αναρτήσουμε το "Blood & Lipstick" το οποίο περιέχει κομμάτια γεμάτα με τη σπίθα της πρώιμης δημιουργίας, καθώς και πειραματισμούς. Καλό θα ήταν να προσθέσουμε πληροφοριακά πως μέσα από τους Pink Military ξεπήδησαν αρκετοί μουσικοί που αργότερα έγιναν γνωστοί, μεταξύ άλλων οι Tim Whitaker (Deaf School), Martin Dempsey (The Yachts/It's Immaterial), Chris Joyce (of The Durutti Column/Simply Red) και τον Budgie (The Slits/Siouxie & the Banshees). 2. Five or Six: Four from Five or Six 12'' e.p. (Cherry Red-1982)
Οι Five Or Six είναι από τα συγκροτήματα για τα οποία δεν βρίσκει κανείς πολλές πληροφορίες στο διαδίκτυο. Οι περισσότεροι τους ξέρουν ή τους αναφέρουν για τη συμμετοχή τους στην πασίγνωστη συλλογή "Pillows and Prayers", όμως στην πραγματικότητα οι Five Or Six παρέδωσαν αρκετά σημαντική και ενδιαφέρουσα μουσική στη μικρή διάρκεια ζωής τους. Τα δύο άλμπουμ και πλήθος singles/e.ps βγήκαν μεταξύ 1981 και 1982. Από αυτά θα αναρτήσουμε σήμερα το τελευταίο τους με τίτλο "Four From Five Or Six" το οποίο περιέχει καταπληκτικά κομμάτια. Μην το χάσετε!
ENG: Little info can be found on this experimental new wave/post punk group from U.K. Most of you should remember them from "Pillows and Prayers" compilation but Five Or Six have made some interesting and significant music throughout their short-lived existence. All releases including 2 LPs and a few singles and e.ps came out only a two-year period (1981-1982). Of those e.ps, the last one entitled "Four From Five Or Six" is the only one we can offer at the moment and it contains great music. Don't miss it!

3. The Legendary Pink Dots: Curious Guy 12'' e.p. (Play it Again Sam-1986)
Οι Legendary Pink Dots είναι από τα πιο γνωστά συγκροτήματα στο underground new wave/experimental rock. Φτιάχτηκαν από τους Edward Ka-Spel and Phil Knight στο Λονδίνο το 1980. Τέσσερα χρόνια αργότερα μετακόμισαν στο Άμστερνταμ και συνέχισαν να γράφουν μουσική εξερευνώντας νέους ήχους. Έκτοτε, έχουν κυκλοφορήσει πολλά άλμπουμ, έκαναν εκατοντάδες ζωντανές εμφανίσεις και ακόμη απέχουν από αυτό που αποκαλείται mainstream. Το 12'' e.p. "Curious Guy" βγήκε το 1986 από την ανεξάρτητη Play It Again Sam και είναι μία από τις πιο σημαντικές κυκλοφορίες τους που μετά από τόσα χρόνια εξακολουθεί και μας στοιχειώνει.
ENG: They are one of the most popular bands in the new wave/experimental rock underground. They were formed in London in 1980 by Edward Ka-Spel and Phil Knight. Four years later they moved to Amsterdam to further explore music paths. They've released tons of music, took part in hundreds of live shows but they're still away from the mainstream. "Curious Guy" 12'' released in 1986 through Play It Again Sam is one of those early original releases that maintain that haunting feeling.

4. Bonemen of Barumba: Driving the Bats Thru Jerusalem 12'' e.p. (Fever Records-1982)
Οι Bonemen of Barumba ήταν ένα βραχύβιο post punk συγκρότημα από το Chicago των Η.Π.Α. και δημιουργήθηκαν το 1980. Κυκλοφόρησαν δύο e.p. καθώς και ένα LP. Σας παρουσιάζουμε το δεύτερο e.p. με τον παράξενο τίτλο "Driving the Bats Thru Jerusalem" που βγήκε το 1982. Από τον ήχο τους καταλαβαίνει κανείς πως ενώ ήταν απόλυτα σοβαροί σε αυτό που έκαναν, το διασκέδαζαν αρκετά. Από τα κομμάτια του e.p. τα "Pity It Ain't" και "Thick Promise" τραβούν αμέσως την προσοχή, ενώ τα άλλα δύο "Talk Is Fat", "Toombah For Ronnie" θέλουν το χρόνο τους.

Less Words/More Music Issue #5

1. Agents of Decay: Searching for Pleasure 12" e.p. (Pudding Records-1985)
Οι Agents of Decay κατά πάσα πιθανότητα κατάγονται από την πόλη Volendam και έχουν κυκλοφορήσει μόνο αυτό το πολύ καλό e.p. Χωρίς να είναι κάτι το επαναστατικό από άποψη συνθέσεων, η μουσική τους είναι εξαιρετική και ρέει σε ένα πολύ όμορφο σύνολο πέντε υποδειγματικών new wave/post punk συνθέσεων. Ακούστε το οπωσδήποτε!
ENG: Agents of Decay most probably originate from a town called Volendam and this good e.p. is their sole release. Not being extremely revolutionary on musical terms, this is excellent and direct music that flows through a beautiful set of five exemplary new wave/post punk songs. Don't miss this one!

2. Kiem: Kiem LP (Plexus Holland-1984)
Οι Kiem είναι ένα βραχύβιο σχήμα από το Rotterdam. Σύμφωνα με το discogs το όνομα τους είναι ακρωνύμιο του "Klank Improvisatie Elektronische Muziek" (στα ελληνικά σημαίνει "Ηχητικός Αυτοσχεδιασμός Ηλεκτρονικής Μουσικής"). Όπως υποννοεί το όνομα, η μουσική τους αποτελείται από πειραματικούς αυτοσχεδιασμούς προς μια industrial κατεύθυνση με ψήγματα από new wave, rock, αλλά και jazz. Επίσης συναρπαστικό είναι πως ο ντράμερ (Cees Meurs) χρησιμοποιεί τα μεταλλικά απομεινάρια ενός ρυμουλκού πλοιαρίου ως τύμπανα. Μπορείτε να το φανταστείτε σε συνδυασμό με σαξόφωνο και φωνητικά; Αν όχι, ακούστε το. Επίσης, χωρίς να θέλουμε να συγκρίνουμε, γενικότερα δεν σας θυμίζουν κάτι από Einsturzende Neubauten; Ευκαιρία να το ανακαλύψετε λοιπόν.
ENG: Kiem are a short lived band from Rotterdam. According to info from discogs their name is an abbreviation of "Klank Improvisatie Elektronische Muziek" which means "Sound Improvisation Electronic Music". As their name implies, their style is improvisational and experimental and of a somehow industrial sounding fragments of new wave, rock, as well as jazz. It is also fascinating that the drummer (Cees Meurs) uses a metal-kit for drums which used to be part of a wrecked tow-boat. Can you imagine this alongside improvisational saxophone and random vocals? If not, then listen to it. Not to say they're alike, doesn't that sound a bit like Einsturzende Neubauten? Let's find out then!

3. Sammie America's Mam - Sammie America's Mam LP (Wereld Rekord-1983)
Οι Sammie America's Mam αναφέρονται στο discogs ως δημιούργημα του τραγουδιστή Tom America, και πως είναι σχήμα με συνεχείς αλλαγές στο όνομα και εκτεταμένη δισκογραφία. Πάντως, αυτό είναι το ομώνυμο υπό την ονομασία Sammie America's Mam. Φαίνεται πως κατάγονται από την πόλη Tilburg και η μουσική τους είναι σε ύφος new wave με αρκετά πειραματικά στοιχεία δημιουργώντας ένα σύνθετο και αρκετά ατμοσφαιρικό στυλ. Πρόκειται για ένα άλμπουμ που θέλαμε να ανεβάσουμε από καιρό καθώς είναι ένα από τα αγαπημένα μας, λόγω της παράξενης και ιδιότροπης ατμόσφαιρας που το διακατέχει και που πραγματικά το άκουσμα του συνεπαίρνει τον ακροατή.
ENG: The info about Sammie America's Mam on discogs says that it's a band from Tilburg and that the singer Tom America is a central figure. Anyway, Sammie America's Mam is merely a reincarnation of the original name of a band with a rather long discography. Apparently their music style is new wave with several experimental aspects indicating a complex and atmospherical sound. Not to mention that it is an album we meant to post a long time now as it is one of our favourites because of the moodiness and atmosphere it runs through and is really overwhelming.

Thanasis Zlatanos: ARTificial LP, 1987 Lollipop Records

Η σημερινή ανάρτηση αφορά κάτι διαφορετικό και ταυτόχρονα δυσεύρετο στην διαδικτυακή πραγματικότητα. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, αναφερόμαστε στον δεύτερο προσωπικό δίσκο του Θανάση Ζλατάνου, ο οποίος εκτός από τη μουσική έχει ασχοληθεί και με ραδιοφωνικές εκπομπές αλλά και την σύνθεση διαφημιστικών jingles .
Ο Θανάσης Ζλατάνος έχοντας δουλέψει από νεαρή ηλικία σε διάφορα σχήματα στην Ελλάδα αλλά και στο εξωτερικό, κατά το 1982 κυκλοφορεί σε συνεργασία με τους Trygve Mathiesen και Sven Kalmar το LP "Nekropolis", ένα από τα πρωτοποριακά άλμπουμ της ελληνικής πειραματικής ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής. Στα 1987 κυκλοφορεί το LP "ARTificial" το οποίο εξακολουθεί να συμβαδίζει με την πειραματική πλευρά, όμως όχι τόσο με την ηλεκτρονική καθώς πρόκειται για ένα σύνολο δέκα άτιτλων ακουστικών new age/instrumental κομματιών. Αυτά τα δέκα κομμάτια ποικίλλουν σε διάρκεια αλλά και σε διάθεση, καθώς κάποια έχουν πιο σκοτεινά ή και μελαγχολικά ηχοχρώματα, ενώ κάποια άλλα είναι πιο ελαφριά στο άκουσμα. Όπως και νά'χει, πιστεύουμε πως ένα τέτοιο άλμπουμ ακούγεται ολόκληρο και όχι αποσπασματικά (σε αντίθεση με το προηγούμενο "Nekropolis" που είχε πιο συγκεκριμένες συνθέσεις). Είναι στα σχέδια μας να αναρτήσουμε στο μέλλον και το τρίτο LP του Ζλατάνου με τίτλο "Datura". Ως τότε, καλή ακρόαση στο "Artificial".


Thanasis Zlatanos: ARTificial LP (Lollipop Records-1987)

ENG: We've been occupied with something slightly different than usual, a rather hard-to-find gem around the net. To be more specific, we refer to the second album by Thanasis Zlatanos whose variety of works don't just involve music but radio shows and the composing of jingles. Having been involved with various music acts in Greece and abroad, even from a young age, Th. Zlatanos with the help of Trygve Mathiesen (vocals-keyboards) and Sven Kalmar (drum-percussions) released the LP "Nekropolis", one of the most pioneering albums of greek experimental electronic music. Later on, in 1987 he issued the LP "ARTificial" which keeps up with the experimental part but it is rather acoustic in style and contains ten untitled new age/instrumental tracks. These ten tracks vary in length, style and mood; there are some melancholic ones included, as well as some other ones of lighter intent. On the other hand, if you consider these ten tracks as a unity we believe that you actually maximize the listening effect. That is unlike the first LP "Nekropolis" which contains less abstract music. We plan to post Zlatanos's third LP "Datura" sometime soon. Until then, have a good listening to "Artificial".

Party Boys: No Aggro LP 1984, L' Invitation Au Suicide

Να τι θεωρούμε ένα ξεχωριστό τρόπο να αποχαιρετήσει κανείς το 2013! Το άλμπουμ "No Aggro" των Party Boys δεν έχει ανάγκη από πολλά λόγια, απλούστατα γιατί ο δίσκος αυτός μιλάει από μόνος του, αλλά και μέσω της φήμης του φυσικά. Ήταν υποχρέωσή μας να τον αναρτήσουμε για σας αφού μάλιστα είναι κάπως δύσκολο να εντοπιστεί αυτόν τον καιρό διαδικτυακά. Άλλωστε οι περισσότεροι από εσάς - και γιατί όχι όλοι; - πρόκειται να εκτιμήσετε δεόντως τη χειρονομία μας καθώς αυτό το θρυλικό άλμπουμ ουσιαστικά περιέχει την "πρώτη ύλη" από την οποία φτιάχτηκε μεγάλο μέρος της αμερικάνικης ανεξάρτητης rock σκηνής. Πέρα από το γεγονός πως οι Party Boys κατάγονται από το Los Angeles δεν θα πούμε περισσότερα, αφού στο διαδίκτυο θα βρείτε αρκετές πληροφορίες για αυτούς. Γεγονός είναι πως το άλμπουμ τους αυτό κυκλοφόρησε αρχικά το 1981 από την Independent Projects, η δε ψηφιοποίηση μας έγινε από την επανέκδοση της Γαλλικής L'Invitation Au Suicide που κυκλοφόρησε το 1984.
Απολαύστε ξανά τους γνώριμους χαοτικούς ρυθμούς: ό,τι ακούγεται σαν Joy Division, μα δεν είναι. Ό,τι μοιάζει με ακούσματα των Savage Republic, ό,τι θα μπορούσε να είναι Normil Hawaiians, όμως δεν είναι...
Πράγματι, το LP "No Aggro" ξεχειλίζει από κλασικά post punk διαμάντια και με το άκουσμά τους, όποια μουσικά ακούσματα έχετε γευτεί μέσω του blog μας θα ενωθούν μεμιάς.

ENG: Here's what we consider a special way to bid 2013 a farewell! Party Boys' "No Aggro" LP needs no introduction simply because it is an album that speaks for itself and its reputation. It has been our obligation to post this legendary album for you since it's been a-hard-to-find on the net nowadays. Not to mention that most of you - and why not all of you - are going to appreciate the posting of "No Aggro" as it is full of that raw material that the American independent rock scene is made of. Let alone the fact that they came from the Los Angeles area, we aren't going to say much considering that there's lots of info about them on the net. Originally released on Independent Projects in 1981, our rip comes from the L'Invitation Au Suicide re-release of 1984.
Be happy to listen to that familiar chaotic rhythm once again, what sounds like Joy Division but it isn't, what has been the place where Savage Republic were nurtured, what could have been the Normil Hawaiians, yet it isn't...
Indeed, "No Aggro" is full of classic post punk, tribal driven gems and upon listening to this LP, most of the music you have already experienced through our blog, eventually will come together. Art of Parties: Elements LP 1990, Pulse Records

Οι περισσότεροι γνωρίζουν τους Art of Parties από το καταπληκτικό new wave 7-ιντσο "Last Time/Central Room" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1984 από την θρυλική Creep Records και την συμμετοχή στην συλλογή "Return of the Creeps" που περιέχει όλο το 7-ιντσο υλικό της Creep.

Φαίνεται πως μετά την κυκλοφορία του "Last Time" και τη συμμετοχή τους στο περίφημο live στη Γκράβα, το συγκρότημα έμεινε ανενεργό για ένα διάστημα ως τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 90 οπότε και κυκλοφόρησαν το ολοκληρωμένο άλμπουμ "Elements", το οποίο είναι εντελώς διαφορετικό σε σχέση με την παλιότερη τους δουλειά. Το "Elements" είναι μεν μακριά από την new wave ζωντάνια του παρελθόντος, αλλά είναι γεμάτο διάσπαρτες επιρροές από art rock και jazz. Είναι λοιπόν ένα διαφορετικό LP, παραμένει όμως ένα αρκετά καλό άλμπουμ με ώριμες συνθέσεις και ήχο αρκετά κοντά στο στυλ των Japan (έχουν πάρει το όνομα τους από τραγούδι των Japan), πράγμα που θεωρούμε ως τολμηρή και φιλόδοξη προσπάθεια. Υποθέτουμε πως σε αυτό συντέλεσε και η ενασχόληση των Δημήτρη και Παναγιώτη Βασιλάκη (σαξόφωνο) με την jazz μουσική πράγμα που οδήγησε τους Art of Parties σε μια νέα μουσική κατεύθυνση. Πρόκειται για ένα ιδιαίτερο άκουσμα στο οποίο υπάρχουν αρκετά ενδιαφέροντα κομμάτια. Ευχόμαστε καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: Most of us have known the Art of Parties from the amazing new wave 7inch "Last Time/Central Room" released through the legendary Creep Records in 1984. The two songs were included in the "Return of the Creeps" compilation of all 7inch material released via Creep Records. It appears that after releasing "Last Time" and their appearance in the famous Grava Festival of Greek bands in 1984, the Art of Parties remained dormant until the early 90's and the release of the full LP "Elements", an album that was distinctively different from any previous release. "Elements" stands quite far from the new wave vividness of early songs, yet it is full of profound influences from art rock and jazz sounds. It is indeed a different LP and contains the qualitative elements of a mature collection of songs. In addition to that, there's a wide influence from Japan (David Sylvian's band) as well, which makes this LP a bold and ambitious effort (Art of Parties owe a lot to Japan including their name). Another factor that might have resulted in changing their style and sound, is that two of the members of the group (Dimitris and Panagiotis Vassilakis) have been extensively into the likes of jazz music. "Elements" is a special listening with plenty of interesting songs. Have a good listening to this one!

Strange Romance: Charms LP 1987, Risque Records

Οι Strange Romance από το Chicago των Η.Π.Α. είναι ακόμα ένα μυστήριο που καλούμαστε να φέρουμε στο φως, έστω και αν, η όποια αναζήτηση στο διαδίκτυο σχετικά με αυτούς απέβη άκαρπη. Το άλμπουμ "Charms" δεν είναι εύκολο να to κατατάξει κανείς σε ένα μόνο είδος μουσικής απλούστατα γιατί καλύπτει ένα ευρύ μουσικό φάσμα από άποψη δομής και μορφολογίας συνθέσεων. Θα λέγαμε πως υπό αυτή την έννοια θυμίζουν τους Rain Gods, τους οποίους αναρτήσαμε μέσα στο 2012.
Αν και υπάρχει μια pop/new wave απόχρωση στον ήχο των Strange Romance, εντούτοις τα κομμάτια χαρακτηρίζονται από ασφαλείς πειραματισμούς. Εάν και είναι σχετικά εύκολο να ξεχωρίσει κανείς κάποια κομμάτια, πιστεύουμε πως το άλμπουμ επιδρά συνολικά στον ακροατή. Η χρήση των συνθεσάϊζερ δεν κουράζει, αντίθετα προσδίδει μια ξεχωριστή σκοτεινή απόχρωση σε κάποια κομμάτια ("Dressed in Black", "The Hand in My Head", "Liturgy") και πλαισιώνεται από συμβατικά όργανα (κιθάρα, πιάνο, σαξόφωνο, φυσαρμόνικα). Τα επαναλαμβανόμενα loops μοιάζουν να αγκιστρώνονται στο μυαλό για αρκετή ώρα δημιουργώντας ένα παράξενο αλλά και γνώριμο ηχοτοπίο με μουσική που κινείται αιθέρια μεταξύ ονείρου και πραγματικότητας όπως στα "Heaven is Far Away" και "Time Falls, Run". Επιπλέον, υπάρχουν και δύο όμορφα ορχηστρικά κομμάτια, τα "Airplane Dreams" και "Klepsydra" στα οποία η μουσική μιλάει καλύτερα από στίχους. Ακούστε τους και ελπίζουμε να συμμερίζεστε έστω και στο ελάχιστο την άποψη μας για το συγκεκριμένο άλμπουμ.

ENG: Strange Romance come from Chicago, USA and they are another music mystery we are called to bring to light, even if we haven't found any info about the band. Apparently, their one and only LP entitled "Charms" isn't so easy to classify due to the wide variety of genres and song structure employed. In that respect, Strange Romance bring to mind the Rain Gods, another band that we had posted in 2012.
Even if there is a poppish/new wave hue throughout the LP, there is however some "safe" experimentation involved. There are some excellent songs here, but the album is more effective as a whole. The creative use of synth applies a unique moody atmosphere ("Dressed in Black", "The Hand in My Head", "Liturgy") aided by lots of analog instruments (guitar, piano, saxophone, harmonica). Similarly, the repeated loops and other traits create a strange but altogether familiar soundscape within the boundaries of the ethereal and dreamy as it proves in "Heaven is Far Away" and "Time Falls, Run". Additionally, there are two beautiful instrumentals ("Airplane Dreams", "Klepsydra") in which the music speaks louder than words. After listening to "Charms", we hope that you might share our opinion regarding this LP.

Camberwell Now: Greenfingers 12'' e.p. 1987, INK Records

Οι Camberwell Now, το σχήμα που δημιούργησε ο Charles Hayward από τις στάχτες των This Heat ήταν για μας μια αποκάλυψη την οποία αποτυπώσαμε στην ανάρτηση του LP "The Ghost Trade" τον Νοέμβριο του 2011. Βέβαια το "The Ghost Trade" στέκει στην κορυφή ως ένα μαγευτικό συνονθύλευμα έμπνευσης, πειραματισμού με τη συμμετοχή εξαιρετικά καλών μουσικών. Σήμερα θα αναφερθούμε στην κυκλοφορία που ακολούθησε το LP, δηλαδή το 12'' e.p. "Greenfingers" του 1987, το οποίο αν και μικρότερης διάρκειας είναι το ίδιο σημαντικό σε ενέργεια και δυναμική, καθώς κινείται και πειραματίζεται ακούραστα σε μινιμαλιστικά μονοπάτια στα όρια μεταξύ μουσικής σύνθεσης και τυχαίας δημιουργίας. Το ομώνυμο "Greenfingers" είναι από αυτά που σε ταξιδεύουν, και αυτό εδώ επιτυγχάνεται με την ακατάπαυστη rhythm-section και τις αινιγματικές επαναλαμβανόμενες μελωδίες που διαρκούν επτά και κάτι συναρπαστικά λεπτά. Παρακάτω όμως η απλότητα του "Know How" ίσως φανεί ως έκπληξη στους περισσότερους. Εδώ αποκαλύπτεται η κρυφή και ήρεμη δύναμη του μινιμαλισμού, μακριά από υπνωτικά τύμπανα, tapes και άλλα εφέ. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο παρατείνεται το ταξίδι στον μεγαλοπρεπή κόσμο των Camberwell Now. Απολαύστε το.

ENG: Camberwell Now was the group that Charles Hayward formed after This Heat disbanded. They were a revelation for us, so we posted the LP "The Ghost Trade" back in November 2011. "The Ghost Trade" is an album of high musical value, a magical mixture of inspiration and experimentation with the aid of great musicians. The following short lengthed "Greenfingers" 12'' ep is equally important in aspects of energy and potential. For instance, the same titled piece "Greenfingers" is the kind of song that carries your mind away by means of ceaseless rhythm-section and mystifying grooves all the way through its 7-minute duration. With this in mind, one may be surprised by the simplicity of "Know How". In that case the hidden and meek strength of minimalism is revealed, pointing away from compelling percussions, tapes and other effects and prolonging the listener's journey into the magnificence of Camberwell Now. Enjoy.

Chapter 24: Tin Invaders LP 1988, Δικαίωμα Διάβασης

Οι Chapter 24 [ή αλλιώς Κεφάλαιο 24] είναι ένα σχήμα που ξεκίνησαν σχεδόν 30 χρόνια πριν οι Αντώνης Λιβιεράτος και Βαγγέλης Μπουλουχτσής στα Ιωάννινα. Έδωσαν στο συγκρότημα το όνομα ενός τραγουδιού των Pink Floyd, γραμμένο από τον Syd Barrett, δείτε πληροφορίες για το συγκεκριμένο τραγούδι εδώ. Είναι μάλλον δύσκολο να κατατάξουμε τους Chapter 24 σε κάποια συγκεκριμένη κατηγορία αφού έχουν το προσόν να ακούγονται το ίδιο παλιομοδίτικοι μαζί και πρωτοποριακοί δημιουργώντας νέα συναρπαστική μουσική. Το "Tin Invaders" αποτελεί την πρώτη βινυλιακή κυκλοφορία τους μέσω της "Δικαίωμα Διάβασης" [Di Di Music] εν έτει 1988. Πρόκειται για ένα πρωτοποριακό άλμπουμ, στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος του προσανατολισμένο σε μινιμαλιστική synth ψυχεδέλεια με πειραματικό ύφος. Η αρχή γίνεται με το κ-α-τ-α-π-λ-η-κ-τ-ι-κ-ό instrumental "Black Baron's Theme", ίσως ένα από τα καλύτερα ορχηστρικά κομμάτια που έχετε ακούσει ποτέ και παρουσιάζει το άλμπουμ με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο. Ουσιαστικά πρόκειται για άψογο δείγμα ψυχεδελικής ιδιοσυγκρασίας με πρωτότυπη δουλειά στα synth, συνταγή που αποδίδει και στα εννιά καταπληκτικά κομμάτια. Στη συνέχεια ακολουθούν εξίσου αξιόλογα κομμάτια όπως το ομώνυμο "Tin Invaders" όπου συνειδητοποιούμε πως τα φωνητικά του Αντώνη Λιβιεράτου "δένουν" άψογα με την παγερή και  απόκοσμη μουσική. Η δομή των τραγουδιών είναι μεταβαλλόμενη. Ενίοτε λιτή με κιθάρα που κατακλύζεται από synth ("The Corpse", "Homecoming"), ενίοτε πιο σύνθετη όπως στο χειμαρρώδες ημι-παρανοϊκό "Alcohol Mind", στο παροξυσμικά ηλεκτρικό "(Elec)trick Death" αλλά και στο σκοτεινό αριστούργημα "Little Jack's Gun".  Το "The Collector" φυσικά και δεν υστερεί σε τίποτα, ούτε και το λαμπρό instrumental "Soundtrack" που κλείνει αυτό το θαυμάσιο δίσκο. Επιπλέον, το "Soundtrack" είναι όντως μουσική από ταινία μικρού μήκους (δείτε το οπισθόφυλλο).
Πρόκειται για ένα άλμπουμ που λειτουργεί ως βραδυφλεγής εκρηκτικός μηχανισμός που προκαλώντας τον ακροατή ταυτόχρονα χορταίνει τις αισθήσεις. Η μουσική μετατρέπεται σε χρώμα και το χρώμα ξανά σε μουσική...μαζί και ο χρόνος μοιάζει να διαστέλεται και να συστέλεται ξανά. Με τον ίδιο τρόπο αλλά πλέον με πιο σύγχρονη ενορχήστρωση ως Κεφάλαιο 24 συνεχίζουν να δημιουργούν καταπληκτική μουσική με μέσο έκφρασης τον ελληνικό στίχο χωρίς αυτό να είναι απαραίτητα περιοριστικό. Καλή ακρόαση σε αυτό το απολαυστικό άλμπουμ!

ENG: Chapter 24 are a band that was created almost 30 years ago in the provincial city of Ioannina, Greece by Antonis Livieratos and Vaggelis Boulouchtsis. They named the band after a Pink Floyd Song written by Syd Barrett - here's some info about the specific song. It would be rather hard to classify Chapter 24 into a particular music category (within the given alternative/experimental region) since they sound old-fashioned and avant-garde creating some new enthralling music. "Tin Invaders" LP is actually their first vinyl release in 1988 via Di Di Music label. This is a pioneer album oriented towards a psychedelic (so to speak) minimal synth wave, all through an experimental perspective. Starting with the instrumental "Black Baron's Theme" perhaps to be one of the best songs of this kind that you'll ever know. It's essentially a flawless specimen of psychedelic temper combined with original synthesizer composition, that is a "recipe" that applies to all nine superb songs. Similarly, the same titled "Tin Invaders" is another excellent song that proves how well Livieratos's voice matches the icy and unworldly style of Chapter 24. Nevertheless, the songs are of variable structure; sometimes there's a thrift guitar with some overflowing synth ("The Corpse", "Homecoming"), while at other times there are even more complex compositions such as the semi-paranoiac "Alcohol Mind", the paroxysmic wordplay of "(Elec)trick Death" as well as the dark masterpiece called "Little Jack's Gun". "The Collector" isn't inferior to any other song mentioned, nor the bright instrumental entitled "Soundtrack" that concludes this fine LP. By the way, "Soundtrack" is indeed music from an actual short film.
Apparently, "Tin Invaders" is a retardant explosive mechanism of music that challenges the listener and satisfies him at the same time. Psychedelically speaking, this music becomes colour and then turns to music again, whereas Time dilates and contracts again and so on...
Chapter 24 are now called Kefalaio 24 [Greek for Chapter 24], express themselves through greek verse and that's by no means a limitation. They've never ceased to astonish with new music perspective. We wish you an enjoyable listening to this one!

Drowning Pool: Drowning Pool LP 1987, Scarface Charley Records plus Nierika mini-LP 1988, Viva Records

Για το τέλος του 2012 είπαμε να ανεβάσουμε κάτι εξαιρετικό στο οποίο είχαμε αναφερθεί απλώς επιγραμματικά όταν ανεβάσαμε την συλλογή "The Fundamental Hymnal" της Fundamental Records. Ο λόγος γίνεται για το συγκρότημα των Drowning Pool από το Los Angeles των Η.Π.Α., γνωστό σε πολλούς που έχουν εντρυφήσει από καιρό στην ανεξάρτητη indie σκηνή των Η.Π.Α., αλλά και τα παρεμφερή σχήματα των Savage Republic, Red Temple Spirits, BPeople, Toiling Midgets, κ.α.. Τα "Drowning Pool" του 1987 και το "Nierika" mini-LP του 1988 θα είναι -μάλλον- το τελευταίο post για το 2012. Οι Drowning Pool κατέχουν μια ξεχωριστή θέση στις μουσικές που μας αρέσουν και θεωρούμε πως είναι ένα από τα συγκροτήματα που το αγαπήσαμε κυρίως για την ιδιαίτερη μουσική του αλλά και την αίσθηση/ατμόσφαιρα που αποπνέει κάθε τους τραγούδι ξεχωριστά. Αν θυμάστε το instrumental "Black Baghdad" από τη συλλογή που προαναφέραμε έχει ένα ιδιαίτερο και μυσταγωγικό χαρακτήρα. Εν ολίγοις, η μουσική των Drowning Pool είναι ένα αμάλγαμα διαφορετικών ήχων και επιρροών που θα μπορούσε να ξεκινά από παγανιστικούς ύμνους αυτόχθονων Αμερικανικών φυλών, να δανείζεται το στυλ και το ηχόχρωμα της post punk και πειραματικής ανεξάρτητης new wave της δεκαετίας του 80, αλλά και θα μπορούσε εν τέλει να ξεκινά κάτι ολότελα καινούργιο και ολόφρεσκο. Το καλό με την Αμερικάνικη σκηνή είναι πως ποτέ δεν παύει να εκπλήσσει, πάντα βρίσκεται ένα βήμα μπροστά με νέους και πάντα γνώριμους ήχους. Όπως προείπαμε, η μουσική των D.P. αποπνέει ένα μυσταγωγικό και ταυτόχρονα ηχητικά πλούσιο χαρακτήρα, θα λέγαμε παρόμοιο με τα συγκροτήματα της 4AD Records και πιο κοντά στους δραματικούς και σκοτεινούς Cindytalk.

Κατ' αρχήν, οι D.P. αφού κυκλοφόρησαν κάποιες κασσέτες (υλικό εκ των οποίων αποτελείται το ημιεπίσημο "Untitled" LP-εναλλακτικός τίτλος "Bloody Boy" [1986]), στη συνέχεια κυκλοφόρησαν το ομώνυμο "Drowning Pool" LP [1987] ή όπως αλλιώς είναι γνωστό "The Green Album". Ακολουθούν τα "Nierika" mini LP [1988] και το "Aphonia" LP [1989]. Κάπου στο 1987 παρεμβάλλεται και η διπλή συλλογή "Satori" που περιέχει πρώιμα κομμάτια και αρκετά άλλα από τις δύο κυκλοφορίες του 1987 και 1988. Προς το παρόν θα επικεντρωθούμε στα "Drowning Pool" και "Nierika" που έχουμε στην κατοχή μας.
Στο ομώνυμο άλμπουμ του 1987 υπάρχουν κάποια από τα καλύτερα κομμάτια τους. Στ' αλήθεια, μπορεί να χαρακτηρίσει κανείς το "Romans" το λιγότερο επικό, το "What of Singing Birds" αιθέριο και μελωδικό και το "Open Palms" σπαρακτικό - και τα τρία αυτά κομμάτια υπερβαίνουν τα υλικά όρια του δίσκου και ασυνείδητα μεταφέρουν την μουσική των D.P. σε ένα διαφορετικό, απόκοσμο επίπεδο. Το παράξενο "Broken Jawed Woman Sings" φέρνει στο νου τελετές αυτόχθονων φυλών της Αμερικής και συνδυασμό φωνητικών ασκήσεων, παρακάτω το "Edith, Hold Out Your Hand" ίπταται αιθέριο στα ίδια σκοτεινά και σχεδόν ψυχεδελικά μονοπάτια και το "Paradise Found" κινείται στην ίδια δραματική φλέβα όπως το "Open Palms". Τα υπόλοιπα κομμάτια είναι εξίσου σημαντικά αφού διατηρούν την ενότητα του δίσκου σε αυτό το σκοτεινό και παράδοξα αισιόδοξο concept. Στην τελειότητα αυτού του απόκοσμου και υγρού concept περαιτέρω συντελούν και τα αιθέρια φωνητικά (αλλά και οι στίχοι) του Andrew Crane και η άψογη ενορχήστρωση των Adam Elesh στην κιθάρα, Brett Smith στο μπάσσο και Jon Thomas στα τύμπανα.
Ομοίως, στο mini-LP "Nierika" εξακολουθεί να καλλιεργείται η ίδια ονειρική ατμόσφαιρα, αρχικά με το ορχηστρικό "House of Dreams" και έπειτα με το "Trueblood" το οποίο ο ήχος του μπάσσου ξεχωρίζει και μαζί με τις γνώριμες echo/chorus κιθάρες δίνει την τέλεια αίσθηση του βάθους, ενώ διαμέσω του "Shadows" στρώνει το δρόμο για το επίσης επικό επτάλεπτο "Nierika", ένα κομμάτι που δεν αποκαλύπτεται στο πρώτο άκουσμα, χρειάζεται να το ξανακούσετε. Εξαιρετική η δουλειά στο μπάσσο και τις κιθάρες, στο γνώριμο ατμοσφαιρικό ύφος, κατά τι λιγότερο απόκοσμο και περισσότερο γήινο σε προσέγγιση. Προσέξτε πως εξελίσσεται και κλιμακώνεται το κομμάτι από το τρίτο λεπτό και μετά, είναι καταπληκτικό.
Ελπίζουμε πως η ανάρτηση αυτή θα δώσει μια ολοκληρωμένη εικόνα των Drowning Pool κυρίως σε αυτούς που είναι ακόμα ανυποψίαστοι για αυτή τη μουσική. Πράγματι, οι D.P. ενσωματώνουν τόσα διαφορετικά μουσικά ακούσματα που είναι λογικό να αρέσουν σε πολύ κόσμο αλλά και να καταπλήξουν εξίσου αρκετό. Μακάρι η μουσική να έκλεινε τις πληγές που άφησε το 2012, μακάρι να ήταν τόσο εύκολο, όμως πιστεύουμε πως αφήνουμε για πάντα πίσω αυτή την δύστροπη και δίσεκτη χρονική περίοδο και την ξορκίζουμε με μουσική κοιτώντας το άγνωστο μέλλον με αισιοδοξία. Άραγε θα μάθουμε κάτι από το παρελθόν;
Θα δείξει...θα τα πούμε με το καλό τις πρώτες ημέρες του 2013. Να είστε καλά.

ENG: We have chosen to post some extraordinary music for the end of 2012. We had already referred to the band hosted today when we posted "The Fundamental Hymnal" compilation. We are talking about the Drowning Pool from Los Angeles, U.S.A. who are definitely among the favourites of those who are already into the American alternative-indie music scene and other similar bands such as Savage Republic, Red Temple Spirits, BPeople, Toiling Midgets and more. It seems that Drowning Pool's "Drowning Pool" LP (1987) and "Nierika" mini-LP (1988) will be our very last post for 2012. We have a soft spot for Drowning Pool's music and that is because of their unique music style and the sense of atmosphere that each and every song reveals. Recall the song from "The Fundamental Hymnal" compilation we mentioned above, entitled "Black Baghdad", it has this unique and ceremonial style which is the exact trademark sound of Drowning Pool. In short, their music is an amalgam of various sounds and influences that could possibly involve tribe-like pagan-ceremonial chants, and/or the coloursound of the post punk and experimental new wave scene of the 80s, and/or altogether something entirely new and innovating. We find that the specific American indie scene is always one step ahead and keeps surprising us with both new and somewhat familiar sounds. As we have already mentioned, D.P.'s music retains a sacramental and atmospheric quality very similar to the 4AD Records set of groups; our personal estimation is that they are closer to Cindytalk.
To begin with, D.P. had already produced a few tapes and an early "Untitled" LP also known as "Bloody Boy" [1986] by the time they released their proper full-length "Drowning Pool" LP in 1987. It is commonly known as "The Green Album" because of its distinctive deep green colour on the cover - along with a photo of a spiral staircase. Then "Nierika" mini-LP (1988) followed, as well as the instrumental LP "Aphonia" (1989). The exceptional double LP compilation "Satori" came out around 1987 comprising of early releases as well as songs from "Drowning Pool" LP and "Nierika" mini-LP. For the time being we have focused on those two releases ("Drowning Pool" and "Nierika") whose vinyl versions we possess.
In the same-titled LP of 1987 we find some of their best songs ever, it's a fact that it is a real gem. How else can one classify songs such as "Romans", being no less than an epic; songs like the ethereal and lyrical "What of Singing Birds" and the agonizing "Open Palms". Εspecially those three tracks seem to transcend the music out of the material restrictions of vinyl into a totally outworldly level. Next, the strange "Broken Jawed Woman Sings" brings some tribal chants to mind along with some voice exercises. Furthermore, "Edith, Hold Out Your Hands" floats like an ethereal being in obscure, almost psychedelic fumes. Last but not least, "Paradise Found" draws into the same dramatical vein as "Open Palms". The rest of the songs we don't mention here are equally as important as far as the wholeness of the record is concerned - regarding this dark and paradoxically optimistic theme. What perfects this eerie and "humid" concept is also the great vocals (and lyrics, too) provided by Andrew Crane as well as the excellent atmospheric arrangement by Adam Elesh (guitar), Brett Smith (bass) and Jon Thomas (drums).
Subsequently, the same oneiric atmosphere applies to the mini-LP "Nierika"as well. At first with the instrumental "House of Dreams", then with "Trueblood" on which the bass alligns perfectly with the echo/chorus guitar, thus, incorporating greater sound depth. Then, "Shadows" paves the way for the outstanding seven minute epic "Nierika", a song that doesn't reveal itself right away, but takes its time as it incorporates excellent guitar arrangement and bass playing skills, somehow in less eerie yet more melodic and earthly approach. Pay attention on how the song climaxes amazingly from the third minute on.
We hope that this post will offer a fuller taste of Drowning Pool, especially to those who are still unaware of this music. It's a fact that D.P. incorporate so many different elements and as a consequence they are a favourite band to many, however they never cease to astonish us.
We wish that music would be able to heal the wounds of the previous year - if only it were so easy... We believe that since we're leaving this wayward leap year behind and exorcising it with more music, we're still having our minds set towards the unknown tomorrow in an optimistic manner. Are we ever going to learn from the past?
