Blue Light: Blue Light LP 1988, Δικαίωμα Διάβασης

Εν μέσω μίνι καύσωνα αποφασίσαμε να ανεβάσουμε ένα μελωδικό, ελαφρύ, αλλά και σπάνιο άκουσμα, τους Blue Light. Κυκλοφόρησαν το ομότιτλο άλμπουμ τους μέσω της θρυλικής 'Δικαίωμα Διάβασης' [DiDi Music] το 1988. Πριν από αυτό, συμμετείχαν με δύο κομμάτια στη συλλογή της Pegasus Records "Cicadas (an electric guide to the greek underground)" το 1987 [θα το βρείτε στους Urban Aspirines].

Όπως είπαμε πιο πάνω, η μουσική των Blue Light είναι ελαφριά αλλά όχι εντελώς pop. Σε ολόκληρο το άλμπουμ υπάρχει η αίσθηση πως αυτό που ακούγεται είναι new wave ήχος με έντονο χρώμα και επιρροές από την δεκαετία του 60. Αυτό ίσως συμβαίνει επειδή τα πλήκτρα είναι κυρίαρχα σε όλα ανεξαιρέτως τα κομμάτια, ακόμα και στο χαμηλών τόνων κλασσικίζον "Menuet I", ενώ η κιθάρα είναι στη σωστή δόση και ένταση χωρίς υπερβολές. Πράγματι, τα περίτεχνα πλήκτρα έχουν τον καθοριστικό ρόλο και προσδίδουν ιδιαίτερο χαρακτήρα σε ολόκληρο το άλμπουμ.
Είναι περίεργο που αυτό το ένα και μοναδικό άλμπουμ των Blue Light δεν έχει φιλοξενηθεί σε κανένα κείμενο blog, ενώ και εμείς το είχαμε αφήσει στην άκρη για πολύ καιρό και αδίκως. Χωρίς να επιφυλάσσει εκπλήξεις είναι ένα όμορφο άκουσμα και μπορεί να το αγαπήσει κανείς για την απλότητα και την ευθύτητα του, αφού δεν καταντά κοινότυπο. Από τα πρώτα που ξεχωρίζουν είναι τα "Lighthouse", "About Lunch Time" και "No Play". Επιπλέον, φαίνεται πως δίνουν ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στα ορχηστρικά κομμάτια όπως το "Teens".
Για κάποιο απροσδιόριστο λόγο αυτό το άλμπουμ έμεινε στην αφάνεια. Ήρθε ίσως ο καιρός να θυμηθούμε πως ενίοτε η καλή μουσική παίζεται απλά. Καλή ακρόαση λοιπόν!

Despite the mini-heatwave we decided to post a melodic and light, a rare item from a band called Blue Light. They released the same title LP through the legendary Dikaioma Diavasis (tr: Right of Passage) -Di Di Music label in 1988. Before that, they had participated in the Pegasus Records compilation "Cicadas (an electric guide to the greek underground)" in 1987 (It's been posted over at Urban Aspirines).
As we mentioned above, the music of Blue Light is light but not entirely pop. Thoughout the album you get the sense of new wave music with lots of influence from the 60s. This might be because the keyboards are the most dominant instruments in every song, even on the low tempo "Menuet I" which has a distinct classical style. Additionally, the use of guitar is appropriate and with no exaggerations. Indeed, the keyboards are elaborate as they convey a distinctive sound throughout.
It's somehow odd that this sole album by Blue Light hasn't been posted in any relevant blog before. Not to mention that ourselves had forgotten all about it for sometime, which was unfair. Their music is simple and straighforward, thus it's easy to like; there are no flabbergastings and no cliches either. In our opinion, some of the songs that stand out are ""Lighthouse", "About Lunch Time" and "No Play". They even give a lot of emphasis on instrumentals like "Teens".
For whatever reason this album was left aside, it's time to recall good music that's played in a simple way. Have a good listening to this one!

Art of Parties: Elements LP 1990, Pulse Records

Οι περισσότεροι γνωρίζουν τους Art of Parties από το καταπληκτικό new wave 7-ιντσο "Last Time/Central Room" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1984 από την θρυλική Creep Records και την συμμετοχή στην συλλογή "Return of the Creeps" που περιέχει όλο το 7-ιντσο υλικό της Creep.

Φαίνεται πως μετά την κυκλοφορία του "Last Time" και τη συμμετοχή τους στο περίφημο live στη Γκράβα, το συγκρότημα έμεινε ανενεργό για ένα διάστημα ως τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 90 οπότε και κυκλοφόρησαν το ολοκληρωμένο άλμπουμ "Elements", το οποίο είναι εντελώς διαφορετικό σε σχέση με την παλιότερη τους δουλειά. Το "Elements" είναι μεν μακριά από την new wave ζωντάνια του παρελθόντος, αλλά είναι γεμάτο διάσπαρτες επιρροές από art rock και jazz. Είναι λοιπόν ένα διαφορετικό LP, παραμένει όμως ένα αρκετά καλό άλμπουμ με ώριμες συνθέσεις και ήχο αρκετά κοντά στο στυλ των Japan (έχουν πάρει το όνομα τους από τραγούδι των Japan), πράγμα που θεωρούμε ως τολμηρή και φιλόδοξη προσπάθεια. Υποθέτουμε πως σε αυτό συντέλεσε και η ενασχόληση των Δημήτρη και Παναγιώτη Βασιλάκη (σαξόφωνο) με την jazz μουσική πράγμα που οδήγησε τους Art of Parties σε μια νέα μουσική κατεύθυνση. Πρόκειται για ένα ιδιαίτερο άκουσμα στο οποίο υπάρχουν αρκετά ενδιαφέροντα κομμάτια. Ευχόμαστε καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: Most of us have known the Art of Parties from the amazing new wave 7inch "Last Time/Central Room" released through the legendary Creep Records in 1984. The two songs were included in the "Return of the Creeps" compilation of all 7inch material released via Creep Records. It appears that after releasing "Last Time" and their appearance in the famous Grava Festival of Greek bands in 1984, the Art of Parties remained dormant until the early 90's and the release of the full LP "Elements", an album that was distinctively different from any previous release. "Elements" stands quite far from the new wave vividness of early songs, yet it is full of profound influences from art rock and jazz sounds. It is indeed a different LP and contains the qualitative elements of a mature collection of songs. In addition to that, there's a wide influence from Japan (David Sylvian's band) as well, which makes this LP a bold and ambitious effort (Art of Parties owe a lot to Japan including their name). Another factor that might have resulted in changing their style and sound, is that two of the members of the group (Dimitris and Panagiotis Vassilakis) have been extensively into the likes of jazz music. "Elements" is a special listening with plenty of interesting songs. Have a good listening to this one!

Strange Romance: Charms LP 1987, Risque Records

Οι Strange Romance από το Chicago των Η.Π.Α. είναι ακόμα ένα μυστήριο που καλούμαστε να φέρουμε στο φως, έστω και αν, η όποια αναζήτηση στο διαδίκτυο σχετικά με αυτούς απέβη άκαρπη. Το άλμπουμ "Charms" δεν είναι εύκολο να to κατατάξει κανείς σε ένα μόνο είδος μουσικής απλούστατα γιατί καλύπτει ένα ευρύ μουσικό φάσμα από άποψη δομής και μορφολογίας συνθέσεων. Θα λέγαμε πως υπό αυτή την έννοια θυμίζουν τους Rain Gods, τους οποίους αναρτήσαμε μέσα στο 2012.
Αν και υπάρχει μια pop/new wave απόχρωση στον ήχο των Strange Romance, εντούτοις τα κομμάτια χαρακτηρίζονται από ασφαλείς πειραματισμούς. Εάν και είναι σχετικά εύκολο να ξεχωρίσει κανείς κάποια κομμάτια, πιστεύουμε πως το άλμπουμ επιδρά συνολικά στον ακροατή. Η χρήση των συνθεσάϊζερ δεν κουράζει, αντίθετα προσδίδει μια ξεχωριστή σκοτεινή απόχρωση σε κάποια κομμάτια ("Dressed in Black", "The Hand in My Head", "Liturgy") και πλαισιώνεται από συμβατικά όργανα (κιθάρα, πιάνο, σαξόφωνο, φυσαρμόνικα). Τα επαναλαμβανόμενα loops μοιάζουν να αγκιστρώνονται στο μυαλό για αρκετή ώρα δημιουργώντας ένα παράξενο αλλά και γνώριμο ηχοτοπίο με μουσική που κινείται αιθέρια μεταξύ ονείρου και πραγματικότητας όπως στα "Heaven is Far Away" και "Time Falls, Run". Επιπλέον, υπάρχουν και δύο όμορφα ορχηστρικά κομμάτια, τα "Airplane Dreams" και "Klepsydra" στα οποία η μουσική μιλάει καλύτερα από στίχους. Ακούστε τους και ελπίζουμε να συμμερίζεστε έστω και στο ελάχιστο την άποψη μας για το συγκεκριμένο άλμπουμ.

ENG: Strange Romance come from Chicago, USA and they are another music mystery we are called to bring to light, even if we haven't found any info about the band. Apparently, their one and only LP entitled "Charms" isn't so easy to classify due to the wide variety of genres and song structure employed. In that respect, Strange Romance bring to mind the Rain Gods, another band that we had posted in 2012.
Even if there is a poppish/new wave hue throughout the LP, there is however some "safe" experimentation involved. There are some excellent songs here, but the album is more effective as a whole. The creative use of synth applies a unique moody atmosphere ("Dressed in Black", "The Hand in My Head", "Liturgy") aided by lots of analog instruments (guitar, piano, saxophone, harmonica). Similarly, the repeated loops and other traits create a strange but altogether familiar soundscape within the boundaries of the ethereal and dreamy as it proves in "Heaven is Far Away" and "Time Falls, Run". Additionally, there are two beautiful instrumentals ("Airplane Dreams", "Klepsydra") in which the music speaks louder than words. After listening to "Charms", we hope that you might share our opinion regarding this LP.

Certain General: November's Heat LP 1984, L' Invitation Au Suicide

Το συγκρότημα που παρουσιάζουμε σήμερα, οι Certain General παίζουν new wave/post punk και κατάγονται από την Νέα Υόρκη. Δημιουργήθηκαν στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 80 και γρήγορα απέκτησαν δραστηριότητα στις ζωντανές εμφανίσεις και στις δύο πλευρές του Ατλαντικού- πολλές από αυτές με ηχηρά ονόματα της Αμερικανικής αλλά και Ευρωπαϊκής ανεξάρτητης σκηνής όπως Green On Red, Rain Parade, Mission of Burma, New Order, Medium Medium, για να αναφέρουμε μερικούς. Το 1984 κυκλοφόρησαν ένα split LP με τους Band of Outsiders με τους οποίους μοιράστηκαν και τη σκηνή αρκετές φορές. Την ίδια χρονιά ο δρόμος τούς τους έφερε στην Μεγάλη Βρετανία αλλά και στη Γαλλία όπου και ξεκίνησαν τη συνεργασία τους με το ανεξάρτητο Γαλλικό label L' Invitation Au Suicide. Το προϊόν αυτής της συνεργασίας είναι το καταπληκτικό άλμπουμ "November's Heat", το οποίο, σημειωτέον, έκανε περίπου 20 χρόνια να κυκλοφορήσει στις ΗΠΑ. Τις παραπάνω πληροφορίες τις αντλήσαμε από την wikipedia από όπου μπορείτε να πληροφορηθείτε σχετικά με τους Certain General.
Το "November's Heat" αποτελείται από 11 μικρά αριστουργήματα σε low και mid tempo ρυθμούς. Ένδεκα μικρά κοφτερά post punk τραγούδια που θα σας κερδίσουν από το πρώτο κιόλας άκουσμα. Πολύ χαρακτηριστικά θα αναφέρουμε μερικά αγαπημένα μας - ασφαλώς θα έχετε και εσείς τα δικά σας αγαπημένα - όπως είναι τα "Maximum G", "Dachau Now", "My Gang in the Woods", "Pilgrim" και "The Shang". Καλωσήρθατε λοιπόν στον συναρπαστικό κόσμο των Certain General. Ευχόμαστε καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: The band we are presenting today, Certain General play new wave/post punk and originate from New York. They were created at the beginning of the 80's and had been pretty active in doing lots of live performances. The Green On Red, The Rain Parade, The Mission of Burma, The New Order and Medium Medium are but a few known bands that Certain General have supported in both the U.S. and Europe. In 1984 they released a split LP with the Band of Outsiders, another band from New York with whom the Certain General have shared the stage more than once. The same year more live performances brought them to the UK and then to France where they worked closely with the independent label L' Invitation Au Suicide. Consequently, they produced the amazing "November's Heat" LP which apparently hadn't been released in the U.S. until 20 years later. Most of that info came from wikipedia. This link will reveal more about Certain General.
"November's Heat" consists of eleven masterpieces played effectively in low and mid tempo. They reveal an edgy post punk sound that will grab your attention from the very beginning. Some of our favourite tracks are "Maximum G", "Dachau Now", "My Gang in the Woods", "Pilgrim" and "The Shang". Presumably, you will also have your own favourites after being introduced to the world of Certain General. Have a good listening to this one!

Rodondo Rocks: Standard Deviation LP 1983, CVR

Η σημερινή ανάρτηση αφορά άλλο ένα Θεσσαλονικιώτικο σχήμα αρκετά κοντά στο στυλ των Noise Promotion Company. Πρόκειται για τους Rodondo Rocks και το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ "Standard Deviation" το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε στην CVR, μάλλον δικό τους label. Σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες που βρήκαμε στο greekpostpunk.blogspot.com οι Rodondo Rocks δημιουργήθηκαν στην Θεσσαλονίκη το 1982 και την επόμενη χρονιά κυκλοφόρησαν το πρώτο άλμπουμ. Ακολούθησε άλλος ένας δίσκος με τον τίτλο "Land of Nod" το 1988 τον οποίο δεν έχουμε ακούσει.

Οι Rodondo Rocks κινούνται στο χώρο του new wave με αρκετές αναφορές στη funk μουσική με αποτέλεσμα να ελαφραίνει αρκετά ο ήχος τους. Οι πολύ καλές συνθέσεις που αποδίδονται στην ηγετική φυσιογνωμία του Stilpon Nestor (κιθάρα και φωνητικά) δεν αφήνουν περιθώρια για ποπ αμφισβητήσεις καθώς είναι φανερή η αναζήτηση ήχου και στυλ μέσω μικρών πειραματισμών, συχνά με επιτυχία. Εδώ πρέπει να πούμε ότι ο Stilpon Nestor είναι ένας μουσικός που ασχολήθηκε ενεργά με την Ελληνική ανεξάρτητη σκηνή αφού χρημάτισε μέλος και των Bicycle (μαζί με τον Τέρυ Παπαντίνα). Πάντως θα λέγαμε πως οι Rodondo Rocks είναι πρωτοπόροι στο είδος τους και οι συνθέσεις τους είναι αντάξιες άλλων διάσημων σχημάτων της εποχής. Για παράδειγμα προσέξτε την αμεσότητα που έχουν τα "Room Romance", "Love Has Passed You By" και "Strangers" και απολαύστε τη λιτή ενορχήστρωση. Καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: Today's post is about another band from Thessaloniki similar to the Noise Promotion Company. We're talking about Rodondo Rocks and the very first LP called "Standard Deviation" released under the independent label CVR (probably their own release). According to some info we found about the band, they were formed in Thessaloniki in 1982 and the next year they released their first album. Five years later a second LP entitled "Land of Nod" followed, however, we don't know much about it.
Rodondo Rocks' style is straight-forward new wave with an influence of funk. Even though funk makes their sound kind of 'pop-ish', there are great songs introduced here. The singer and guitarist Stilpon Nestor is the person who gets the credit for all the compositions. Undoubtedly the band was in search of original sound, thus there's an element of experimentation throughout. Ever since, Stilpon Nestor has been actively involved in the Greek alternative music scene, among others, he's been a member of the band Bicycle (along with Terry Papadinas). All in all, Rodondo Rocks were ahead of their time and their songs are more than worthy of other equivalent and renowned bands of that era. For instance, pay attention to the direct effect of "Room Romance", "Love Has Passed You By" and "Strangers", just to mention a few. Have a good listening to this one!

Noise Promotion Company: Silence! LP 1986, Ano Kato Records

Οι Noise Promotion Company ήταν ένα από τα πιο αξιόλογα new wave συγκροτήματα από την Θεσσαλονίκη. Έδρασαν από το 1984 μέχρι το 1989 και κατάφεραν να κυκλοφορήσουν δύο άξια άλμπουμ, το "Silence!" του 1986 και το "Catalogue" του 1988. Και τα δύο κυκλοφόρησαν από την Ano Kato Records, μια ανεξάρτητη δισκογραφική η οποία ανέθρεψε αρκετά νέα και ελπιδοφόρα συγκροτήματα. Σήμερα παρουσιάζουμε το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ με τον 'προστακτικό' τίτλο "Silence!".
Ο ήχος του άλμπουμ φαίνεται πως επιβεβαιώνει επαρκώς τις επιρροές από funk, blues, 70's rock και punk/new wave. Χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα του παντρέματος των παραπάνω επιρροών είναι το κομμάτι "Mercury Sulphate Blues", αλλά και η ωραία διασκευή στο κλασικό "Move On Up" του Curtis Mayfield, θρύλου της funk/r'n'b. Επιπλέον, είναι τέτοια η αφοσίωση τους στους funk ρυθμούς με αποτέλεσμα η rhythm section να λειτουργεί σαν καλοκουρδισμένη μηχανή. Έτσι, από τον καταιγιστικό ρυθμό του "Florence" που ξεκινάει το άλμπουμ μέχρι και τα καταπληκτικά "Bad Taste" και "Green Grains"  στ' αλήθεια δεν θα βρείτε ούτε μια βαρετή στιγμή σε ολόκληρο το LP.  Σας ευχόμαστε καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: The Noise Promotion Company were one of the most notable new wave bands of Thessaloniki. They lasted from 1984 to 1989 and managed to issue two worthy albums, namely "Silence!" in 1986 and "Catalogue" in 1988. They were both released under Ano Kato Records, an indepenent label which nurtured several promising bands at that period. Today we are presenting the first of the two LPs, the one with the imperative title "Silence!".
The Noise Promotion Company's sound in that first LP corresponds to their influences of funk, blues, 70's rock, punk and new wave. The success of blending all the above mentioned music genres is evident in the song "Mercury Sulphate Blues" as well as the Curtis Mayfield cover "Move On Up". Additionally, such is their devotion to the funk idiom, that the rhythm section functions in perfect timing. Even from the stormy tempo of "Florence" (the excellent opening track) to the amazing "Bad Taste" and "Green Grains" there isn't a dull moment throughout this LP. We wish you a good hearing on this one.

Sarean Quartar: Paris Need Not Be Warm 12'' e.p. 1986, Contempo Records

Για τη συνέχεια έχουμε τους Sarean Quartar για τους οποίους δεν έχουμε καμία πληροφορία, πέραν του ότι καταγόντουσαν από την περιοχή του Kent στην Αγγλία (στο σύνδεσμο διαβάστε το σχόλιο του χρήστη 'styreneboy'). Επιπλέον, έχουμε εντοπίσει και ένα βίντεο ("Head to Head") στο youtube το οποίο και παραθέτουμε στο τέλος της ανάρτησης.

Φαίνεται πως κυκλοφόρησαν μόνο δύο e.p. στην Ιταλική Contempo Records τα "Paris Need Not Be Warm" (1986) και "Precious" (1987) από τα οποία παρουσιάζουμε το πρώτο. Ο ήχος τους είναι γεμάτος πομπώδεις, σχεδόν gothic μελωδίες, σχεδόν space rock χωρίς όμως να είναι εύκολο να προσδιοριστεί. Αυτό δεν έχει καμία σημασία όμως γιατί και τα τρία κομμάτια, "Head to Head", "Paradise" και "Looking Back" είναι καταπληκτικά δείγματα μουσικής όσμωσης όλων των μουσικών ειδών που αναφέραμε πιο πάνω σε ένα neo-psychedelic μοτίβο. Σε περίπτωση που κάποιος/α έχει κάποια πληροφορία για το συγκρότημα με αυτό το παράξενο όνομα [παρεπιπτόντως η λέξη Sarean πρέπει να είναι ινδική] θα μας ενδιέφερε να μάθουμε περισσότερα για αυτούς. ENG: Continuing our 12'' eps review we present Sarean Quartar, a British act of whom we don't have a clue. Most probably they originated from Kent (check this link and the comment by 'styreneboy'). There is also a video of the band ("Head to Head") on youtube that you can watch at the bottom of this post. It seems that Sarean Quartar released two eps through the Italian label Contempo Records: "Paris Need Not Be Warm" (1986) and "Precious" (1987), of which only the first one regards this post. Their music orientation is somehow indefinable. All three songs "Head to Head", "Paradise" and "Looking Back"are melodic in a pompous -almost gothic- nature and at the same time almost space rock-like too. Since all three are great songs, style is not that important anyway. To set it all straight though, we can argue that all the above mentioned styles redound into beautiful neo-psychedelic rock music motifs. In case someone has extra information about the band with the bizarre name (suppose it's Indian of origin) we would be more than interested in finding out more. Enjoy!

Bunnydrums: Feathers Web 12'' e.p. 1983, Funk Dungeon Music, Inc

Σε συνέχεια των αναρτήσεων που αφορούν σε 12 ιντσες κυκλοφορίες έχουμε τους Bunnydrums από την Φιλαδέλφεια των Η.Π.Α. Για την ιστορία, οι Bunnydrums σχηματίστηκαν το 1980 από πρώην μέλη δύο punk rock σχημάτων, των Bonemen και των Autistics. Έκτοτε κυκλοφόρησαν δύο LP, ένα single και δύο eps. Θα μας απασχολήσει το πρώτο τους e.p. με τίτλο "Feathers Web" του 1983 το οποίο είναι μία από τις πρώτες τους κυκλοφορίες. Ο ήχος των Bunnydrums είναι κυρίως κιθαριστική post punk -με ελάχιστες ηλεκτρονικές αναφορές- αρκετά στοιχεία funκ κυρίως όσον αφορά στη χρήση του μπάσσου (πολύ έντονο στο "Too Much Time", αλλά και στο "Crawl"). Έχουν ιδιαίτερα σκοτεινό και ατμοσφαιρικό ήχο σε κάποια κομμάτια όπως το εισαγωγικό "Shiver" και το "Magazine". Η πολύ καλή ενορχήστρωση φαίνεται σε κομμάτια όπως το "Crawl", το οποίο συγκαταλέγεται στα καλύτερα οργανικά κομμάτια που έχουμε ακούσει. Συνολικά πρόκειται για μια αξιοσέβαστη και αψεγάδιαστη 12'' κυκλοφορία που θυμίζει περισσότερο Βρετανική post punk παρά τον Αμερικάνικο ήχο, αλλά αξίζει να το προσέξετε. Καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: In continuation of the 12'' related posts, here's Bunnydrums from Philadelphia, U.S.A. Fact is that Bunnydrums were formed by ex-members of two punk rock bands from Philadelphia namely The Bonemen and The Autistics. Ever since they have released two LPs, a 7" single and two 12'' eps. Today we will deal with the first one of those eps, the excellent "Feathers Web" issued in 1983. Bunnydrums were a post punk group mainly based on guitar while at times they indulged themselves into electronic fillings/traits. They also had a few funk elements by means of excellent bass play (in "Too Much Time" and "Crawl"). In addition, the Bunnydrums portrayed a dark and atmospheric sounding in certain songs such as "Shiver" and "Magazine". Having in mind the arrangement in "Crawl", it is one of the best instrumentals we've ever known as it shows the group's skill in writing eloquent music. All in all, "Feathers Web" 12'' e.p. is a respectable and flawless release in the vein of British post punk rather than the American way. Needless to say it calls for attention. Have a good listening to this one, too.

Camberwell Now: Greenfingers 12'' e.p. 1987, INK Records

Οι Camberwell Now, το σχήμα που δημιούργησε ο Charles Hayward από τις στάχτες των This Heat ήταν για μας μια αποκάλυψη την οποία αποτυπώσαμε στην ανάρτηση του LP "The Ghost Trade" τον Νοέμβριο του 2011. Βέβαια το "The Ghost Trade" στέκει στην κορυφή ως ένα μαγευτικό συνονθύλευμα έμπνευσης, πειραματισμού με τη συμμετοχή εξαιρετικά καλών μουσικών. Σήμερα θα αναφερθούμε στην κυκλοφορία που ακολούθησε το LP, δηλαδή το 12'' e.p. "Greenfingers" του 1987, το οποίο αν και μικρότερης διάρκειας είναι το ίδιο σημαντικό σε ενέργεια και δυναμική, καθώς κινείται και πειραματίζεται ακούραστα σε μινιμαλιστικά μονοπάτια στα όρια μεταξύ μουσικής σύνθεσης και τυχαίας δημιουργίας. Το ομώνυμο "Greenfingers" είναι από αυτά που σε ταξιδεύουν, και αυτό εδώ επιτυγχάνεται με την ακατάπαυστη rhythm-section και τις αινιγματικές επαναλαμβανόμενες μελωδίες που διαρκούν επτά και κάτι συναρπαστικά λεπτά. Παρακάτω όμως η απλότητα του "Know How" ίσως φανεί ως έκπληξη στους περισσότερους. Εδώ αποκαλύπτεται η κρυφή και ήρεμη δύναμη του μινιμαλισμού, μακριά από υπνωτικά τύμπανα, tapes και άλλα εφέ. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο παρατείνεται το ταξίδι στον μεγαλοπρεπή κόσμο των Camberwell Now. Απολαύστε το.

ENG: Camberwell Now was the group that Charles Hayward formed after This Heat disbanded. They were a revelation for us, so we posted the LP "The Ghost Trade" back in November 2011. "The Ghost Trade" is an album of high musical value, a magical mixture of inspiration and experimentation with the aid of great musicians. The following short lengthed "Greenfingers" 12'' ep is equally important in aspects of energy and potential. For instance, the same titled piece "Greenfingers" is the kind of song that carries your mind away by means of ceaseless rhythm-section and mystifying grooves all the way through its 7-minute duration. With this in mind, one may be surprised by the simplicity of "Know How". In that case the hidden and meek strength of minimalism is revealed, pointing away from compelling percussions, tapes and other effects and prolonging the listener's journey into the magnificence of Camberwell Now. Enjoy.

Normil Hawaiians: Gala Failed 12'' e.p. 1981, Red Rhino Records

Μετά από τη σύντομη απουσία μας, επανερχόμαστε με ένα μικρό αφιέρωμα στα 12" e.p. καθ' όλη τη διάρκεια του Απριλίου. Κάνουμε την αρχή με τους Normil Hawaiians και το εξαιρετικό "Gala Failed" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1981 από την Red Rhino. Έχουμε ασχοληθεί και στο παρελθόν με τους Normil Hawaiians όταν παρουσιάσαμε τα δύο ολοκληρωμένα LP τους. Στην πραγματικότητα το "Gala Failed" προηγείται κατά ένα χρόνο του "More Wealth Than Money" και αποτυπώνει ξεκάθαρα τον ήχο των N.H. στο ξεκίνημα τους. Υπάρχουν δε μερικά από τα στοιχεία που συναντήσαμε στις μετέπειτα 'τεράστιες' δημιουργίες της κολλεκτίβας, έστω και σε αχνή, πρωτόλεια μορφή. Η μινιμαλιστική και ενίοτε αφηρημένη διάθεση στις συνθέσεις μαζί με την πρωτοτυπία είναι αναπόσπαστα χαρακτηριστικά των N.H.. Είναι γεγονός πως το e.p. "Gala Failed" αποτελείται από πέντε ισάξια και εκπληκτικά κομμάτια των οποίων το μουσικό στίγμα είναι σαφώς η post punk με ισχνές αναφορές στα 60s-70s. Μένει να το ανακαλύψετε και μόνοι σας. ENG: Soon after our short recess we return in active blogging with an April's dedication to 12'' eps. First and foremost comes Normil Hawaiians' excellent "Gala Failed" e.p. from 1981 via Red Rhino Records. Not long ago we had posted the LPs ["More Wealth Than Money", "What's Going On?"] from this great band. Actually, "Gala Failed" had been released the year before "More Wealth Than Money", yet it depicted the band's distinctive sound at the beginning. Additionally, there are certain elementary characteristics that one can also see (or hear) even in those early releases. Quite distinctive of N.H's music is the combination of minimalistic and abstract ideas with magnificence and originality. To that end, "Gala Failed" contains five excellent and equally important songs with a clear-cut post punk feel, at times combined with influences from the 60s and the 70s. We leave this for you to decide. Have a good listening to this one.

Movement: Untitled m-LP 1984, Contorsion Records

Άλλο ένα μουσικό διαμάντι που ενώ είναι γνωστό στους οπαδούς της post punk και λείπει από τα ειδικευμένα blogs (βέβαια μπορεί να βρεθεί σε P2P [soulseek]) είναι το καταπληκτικό μίνι LP "Untitled" των Γάλλων Movement. Βεβαίως και για αυτούς είναι δύσκολο να βρεθεί οποιαδήποτε πληροφορία στο διαδίκτυο αφού δυστυχώς, το σύντομο μεν, αριστούργημα δε, "Untitled" αποτελεί την μοναδική τους δουλειά εν έτει 1984, μέσω της Contorsion Records. Οι Movement φαίνεται πως είχαν ανάλογες επιρροές οι οποίες σε συνδυασμό με την έμπνευση μας χάρισαν έξι συναρπαστικά post punk διαμάντια, από τα οποία κατά τη γνώμη μας ξεχωρίζουν τα "Silent Guard" και "Figure Head". Ο ήχος τους είναι γενικά σκοτεινός, μυστηριώδης αλλά και με πομπώδη ξεσπάσματα - σχεδόν gothic. Έχει δηλαδή όλα τα προσόντα να είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα άλμπουμ του είδους. Καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: Another well-known post punk gem which hasn't been posted on any blog and for no obvious reason  (can be found in P2P sharing machines such as soulseek) is Movement's "Untitled" mini LP issued on the unknown Contorsion Records in 1984. Besides the fact that they are of French origin,  there isn't much about them on the net, since "Untitled" constitutes their one and only recorded and issued effort. Apparently, they had all the proper influences mastered with inspirational force which resulted in bringing out six of the finest post punk songs. In this light, pay close attention to "Silent Guard" and "Figure Head". Attempting to describe their sound, it is dark and mysterious with outbursts of pompous nature, almost gothic-like. In a nutshell, it is qualified as one of the best albums of the genre. Have a good listening to this one!
