Σήμερα παρουσιάζουμε ένα μικρό διαμάντι με τιτλο “The Present Years” μοναδική κυκλοφορία των Unicorn εν έτει 1991 μέσω της άγνωστης Monokeros Records. Δεν είναι εύκολο να βρεί κανείς πολλές πληροφορίες για τους Unicorn σε έντυπα ή στο διαδίκτυο. Μόνο το οπισθόφυλλο έχει πληροφορίες για τα μέλη του group και φυσικά η μουσική τους σε αυτό το mini LP που μαρτυρά τις επιρροές τους και την έμπνευσή τους. Το “The Present Years” είναι ένας δίσκος που αποκαλύπτεται σιγά σιγά, και που κατακτά τον ακροατή του από το δεύτερο άκουσμα και μετά. Είναι σε ύφος new wave με αρκετές garage πινελιές εδώ κι εκεί. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό πως όσο μελαγχολικό μπορεί να το χαρακτηρίσει κανείς, άλλο τόσο αισιόδοξο μπορεί να φανεί σε κάθε άκουσμα. Κάθε τραγούδι είναι μια όμορφη σύνθεση με απλές αλλά ευρηματικές μελωδίες και κάποια εφέ στην κιθάρα ενώ το μπάσο με την ντράμς δουλεύουν σαν καλοκουρδισμένο ρολόϊ. Υπάρχουν και άλλα όργανα που ακούγονται, όπως πιάνο και βιολί και εμπλουτίζουν τις συνθέσεις. Κάθε κομμάτι είναι πανέμορφο, αλλά σίγουρα αυτά που ξεχωρίζουν είναι τα “Rain in my eyes” και “World of Lies”. Απολαύστε το “The Present Years” ΕΔΩ...

Today we are presenting a mini LP entitled “The Present Years”, sole release of a band called Unicorn via the unknown Monokeros Records. It is a rare to find vinyl, and it is also difficult to find further information for the band in the press or the internet. On the back cover you can find some info about the group and the release. The music however is the only witness of Unicorn's inspiration and influences. “The Present Years” is a record that reveals itself slowly and satisfies the listener with the second time. The music style is New wave with plenty Garage influences here and there. What is mostly characteristic about “The Present Years” is that once you listen to it you might decide that it is a melancholic album, and if you listen to it another time it might sound quite an optimistic album after all. Each song is beautifully composed of original guitar melodies and effects, while the rhythm section works like a well-tuned clock. Furthermore, piano and violin enrich the music. Each song is beautiful, however those who stand out are “Rain in my eyes” and World of Lies”. Enjoy “The Present Years” HERE...

Πρόκειται για την συλλογή “Unexplored 1982-1986” της άγνωστης Strange Weekend Records με άγνωστα συγκροτήματα από άγνωστες Νεο-Ζηλανδέζικες ανεξάρτητες δισκογραφικές εταιρείες με όμορφα δείγματα της εκεί new wave σκηνής της περιόδου 1982-1986. Δυστυχώς δεν μπορέσαμε να βρούμε πολλές πληροφορίες για την Strange Weekend Records, οι λιγοστές γνώσεις μας είναι από τα credits στο εσώφυλλο του δίσκου. In today's post – offered by our friend The Unspeakable – we present a record from the distant (unless you live there) New Zealand. This is about the “Unexplored 1982-1986” compilation LP released by the less-known Strange Weekend Records, including groups from other less-known independent record labels of New Zealand. It is a beautiful collection of songs of the independent new wave scene between 1982-1986. Unfortunately we could not find much about Strange Weekend Records or any of the other labels, all we know comes from the credits of the inner sleeve. If you happen to know more about the labels or the bands included, let us know too.

Scoria: Scoria e.p., 1985 Famous Music Records

Ένα από τα συγκροτήματα που επέζησαν της δεκαετίας του '80' στην Ελλάδα με όσες αντιξοότητες και δυσκολίες που μπορεί να υπήρξαν ήταν οι Scoria (=Σκώρια)., οι οποίοι είχαν δύο πολύ καλές κυκλοφορίες καθώς και μερικά κομμάτια σε διάφορες συλλογές (δείτε εδώ). Σήμερα παρουσιάζουμε το πρώτο τους 12-ιντσο e.p. με τίτλο το όνομά τους. Όσον αφορά τον ήχο τους είναι σε post punk ύφος, και τα τραγούδια τους αρκετά δυναμικά. Ευρηματικές μελωδίες πλαισιώνουν το κάθε ένα από τα 4 τραγούδια αυτού του πρώτου αναγνωριστικού e.p., καταιγιστικές ντραμς και μπάσσο παιγμένα στην ακρίβεια. Όσο για τα φωνητικά, αυτά αποδίδουν μια συγκρατημένη παράνοια συγκερασμένη από στίχους που υποστηρίζουν αυτή την συγκρατημένη οργή και καταφανή ειρωνεία απέναντι σε ο,τιδήποτε σκουριασμένο. Ειδικά στο πρώτο (και ομώνυμο) κομμάτι τους είναι καθαρή η κοινωνική -και όχι μόνο- κριτική πως η σκουριά (=Scoria) είναι η μεγαλύτερη αρρώστεια της εποχής μας, πως τα πάντα τριγύρω έχουν σκουριάσει, και πως τελικά δεν υπάρχει ελπίδα αφού πια η επιστήμη απεφάνθη πως η σκουριά είναι μόνο μέσα στο μυαλό μας και τη φαντασία μας. Σίγουρα θα τους διαβάσετε... Το "Tired Lover" έχει μια από τις πιο έμμονες εισαγωγές με το πολύ χαρακτηριστικό μπάσσο και την κιθάρα που "ζωγραφίζει". Επίσης και το "No More Cries" με το πανέμορφο ρεφραίν του και την rock n roll μαεστρία στο ρυθμό είναι στα ίδια επίπεδα, απλά καταπληκτικό. Τέλος, το επικό λόγω τίτλου (και διάρκειας: 7 λεπτών) "Ladies And Gentlemen Please Welcome... Your New Golden God" κλείνει αυτό το καταπληκτικό e.p. στο ίδιο στυλ των προηγούμενων τραγουδιών με το μπάσσο κυριολεκτικά να οδηγεί το κομμάτι, τα σπαρταριστά σαρκαστικά φωνητικά και την κιθάρα που γεμίζει τα κενά. Ο τίτλος και οι στίχοι είναι μια κριτική κατά των υπερ-καταναλωτικών μας συνηθειών τις οποίες παρομοιάζουν με θρησκεία.

One of these bands that survived the 80s in Greece whatever difficulties may have been is Scoria (=rust), who actually managed to release 2 records during 1985 and 1986 and a few other tracks in various compilations (check here). Today we present their first omonymous post punk 12" e.p. It is consisted of 4 very dynamic songs with imaginative melodies, stormy drums and bass played in accuracy. As for the paranoid and sarcastic vocals they interpret the same as sarcastic and ironic lyrics who speak against whatever is 'rusted'. Especially in the first same titled track full of social criticism as they portray a world filled with rust (=Scoria) and that rust is the greatest disease. The diagnosis in the end, is that rust does not exist anywhere else but in our imagination. Read along as you listen... Next song "Tired Lover" starts off with one of the greatest bass riffs, that it may become obsessive - the guitar 'draws' along too. Next one "No More Cries" with the beautiful refrain and the rock n roll twist in its rhythm unfolds the group's skill and talent. Last song for the e.p. is "Ladies And Gentlemen Please Welcome... Your New Golden God" lasting 7 minutes long, an epic in terms of title, lyrics and length. Once again, the bass leads on the music, the quivering sarcastic voice and the guitar filling the gaps in beautiful ways. The title and the lyrics again criticize our over-consuming habits compared as some kind of religion.

Telepathy Series Γ+Δ: Ding An Sich split w/ ΑΩ, 1998 CAPP Records

Εν μέσω καύσωνα, και σε συνέχεια από το προηγούμενο και σχετικό με τον "Γλαύκωψ" post είναι το σημερινό, που αφορά μια κυκλοφορία της Capp (της ιδιόκτητης ανεξάρτητης δισκογραφικής του) με τίτλο "Telepathy Series Γ+Δ". Μέρος από σειρά κυκλοφοριών οι οποίες ουσιαστικά είναι split ep's που απαρτίζονται από μουσικώς σχετικά αλλά και άσχετα μεταξύ τους συγκροτήματα. Όλες αυτές οι κυκλοφορίες τις έχει προσωπικά επιμεληθεί ο ίδιος ο "Γλαύκωψ", κυρίως από άποψη εξωφύλλων, αλλά και μουσικής παραγωγής. Στη συγκεκριμένη κυκλοφορία παίρνουν μέρος 2 συγκροτήματα της "σκοτεινής" gothic και dark electro εγχώριας σκηνής.

Στην πρώτη πλευρά του split έχουμε δύο κομμάτια των Ding An Sich, παλιό σχήμα της gothic rock σκηνής από τη δεκαετία του 80, τα "When Tears Have Eyes" και "Evening Wind". Τυπικά gothic rock τραγούδια με όμορφες μελωδίες στην κιθάρα και χαρακτηριστική rhythm section. Όσον αφορά το όνομά τους (για την ιστορία) αυτό προέρχεται από κεντρική ιδέα βιβλίου (Κριτική της Αγνής Λογικής) του φιλόσοφου Εμανουέλ Κάντ, και σημαίνει "το πράγμα αυτό καθαυτό".

Την δεύτερη πλευρά καταλαμβάνουν οι ΑΩ, ένα συγκρότημα της dark electro σκηνής ("Last Night's Vision", "Silence" και "New Dark Age") με όλα τα χαρακτηριστικά του είδους: ηλεκτρονικό ήχο με συνεχές beat στην drum machine, και χαοτικά synth. Όμως οι ΑΩ ξεχωρίζουν αρκετά λόγω των φωνητικών που είναι παραμορφωμένα και λόγω της μοναδικής

ατμόσφαιρας των κομματιών τους με τη βοήθεια παραμορφωμένων συνθεσάϊζερς και κιθάρας σε κάποια σημεία παρασύρουν τον ανυποψίαστο ακροατή σε εφιαλτικά ηχοτοπία και πραγματικά σκοτεινά μονοπάτια. Η εγρήγορση που προκαλείται από τον φρενήρη ρυθμό εντείνει αυτό το συναίσθημα του κυνηγητού και της αποξένωσης - πολύ γνώριμο σε όσους ζουν σε μεγάλες πόλεις.

Η συγκεκριμένη κυκλοφορία είναι αρκετά σπάνια πια και είναι σημαντική γιατί έφερε στην επιφάνεια 2 συγκροτήματα που ζούσαν ως τότε στην αφάνεια και στην αγάπη μόνο των (υποθέτουμε) λιγοστών φανατικών οπαδών τους. Είμαστε σίγουροι πως γνωρίζοντάς τα θα ανακαλύψετε μια ακόμα πτυχή στην ιστορία της ανεξάρτητης Ελληνικής σκηνής. Θα βρείτε το λινκ εδώ.

Amidst heatwave, today's post is a continuation of the previous one about Glafx and deals with a release from Capp Records (Glafx's own independent record company) entitled "Telepathy Series Γ+Δ". It is part of a series of released split e.p.'s constituted by similar and non similar bands/projects. Each part of this "Telepathy Series" is edited by Glafx himself - especially the cover artwork - and sometimes the music production. In "Telepathy Series - 3+4" 2 groups of the gothic rock and dark electronic local scene partcipate.

On side one there are two songs by Ding An Sich ("When Tears Have Eyes" and "Evening Wind") which is a band that comes from the 80s. These are two typical songs from the gothic genre with beautiful melodies on guitar and a robust rhythm section. As for their name now (cause it might ring a bell) its borrowed by Immanuel Kant's book "Critique of Pure Reason", and the precise meaning is "a thing to itself".

Side two is occupied by ΑΩ (pronounced Alfa Omega) and three songs "Last Night's Vision", "Silence" and "New Dark Age". ΑΩ were a dark electro group, whose sound must be familiar those who know the style: electronic sounds and samplers with a frenzy drum machine filled-in by chaotic synth effects. Although that might sound stereotypical, ΑΩ are somehow special in the way of unique altered vocals and the atmosphere enriched by distorted synthesizers and guitars. Effectively, that sound lures the unsuspected listener towards nightmarish dark soundscapes and introverse mental states, while the frenzy beat intenses the emotion of chase and isolation - we find it quite familiar as to the anxiety built in by everyday urban life.

This particular release is a rare one and important as it brings to light two unknown bands that probably existed only in knowledge of their few closest fans. We are certain that once you know them, you will discover another hidden aspect about contemporary independent Greek scene. The link is that way...

Viridin Green: ΗΩ, 1988 Wipe Out Records

Κατ' αρχήν να ευχηθώ καλό μήνα και καλές διακοπές σε όσους τις έχουν ξεκινήσει. Καλό κουράγιο σε όσους έχουν απομείνει στα μετόπισθεν.

Η σημερινή ανάρτηση έχει να κάνει με μια μεγάλη μορφή της Ελληνικής Ανεξάρτητης (ιδιαίτερα της σκοτεινής) σκηνής, από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 80 μέχρι και σήμερα, και ελπίζουμε και προς το μέλλον. Πρόκειται για έναν καλλιτέχνη που έχει κάνει πράξη το "do it yourself", και για πάνω από 20 χρόνια ασχολείται με τη σκηνή γράφοντας και κυκλοφορώντας μουσική. Επίσης ασχολείται και με άλλες τέχνες και εκφράσεις όπως η ζωγραφική, η λογοτεχνία, η γλυπτική, κ.α. - πολλές φορές επενδύει τη δική του μουσική με δικά του εικαστικά δημιουργήματα. Πρόκειται για τον Στέφανο "Γλαυκωψ" Κουκουλομάτη, ο οποίος ανάμεσα στα πάμπολλα συγκροτήματα, projects και μουσικές πλατφόρμες που έχει δημιουργήσει, έχει στο ενεργητικό του και το σχήμα των Viridi(a)n Green. Κάποιες επιπλέον πληροφορίες για τον ίδιο και το έργο του μπορείτε να δείτε εδώ. Εδώ έχουμε τη πρώτη τους δισκογραφική δουλειά η οποία έχει τον ελπιδοφόρο τίτλο "ΗΩ" δηλαδή Αυγή, όπως σημειώνεται και στο ένθετο "Ηώ=Αυγή/Θεά Ηώ/Λυκόφως. Σχετικά με την Ηώ στην Αρχαία Ελληνική μυθολογία δείτε εδώ . Επιγραμματικά μόνο θα πούμε - για να μην ξεστρατίσουμε από την περιγραφή του δίσκου αυτού καθεαυτού - ότι Ηώ λατρευόταν από τους Αρχαίους Έλληνες και σύμφωνα με μία εκδοχή της μυθολογίας ήταν κόρη του Τιτάνα Υπερίωνα και της Τιτανίδας Θείας, αδελφή του Ήλιου και της Σελήνης, αντιπροσώπευε μέρος αυτής της διαδοχής από την Νύχτα στην Ημέρα. Εδώ υποθέτουμε πως ο τίτλος του δίσκου δεν συμβολίζει απλά μια (νέα) αρχή.

Ας ξεκινήσουμε την περιήγηση μας στο δίσκο αυτό (mini-LP) και ιδιαιτέρως από το εξώφυλλο. Τα σχέδια ανήκουν στον ίδιο τον Γλαύκωψ και είναι ζωγραφισμένο στο χέρι! Υπάρχουν εκδοχές του δίσκου αυτού με ελαφρώς τροποποιημένο εξώφυλλο. Πρόκειται για σπάνιο δίσκο σήμερα, αφού άλλωστε "κόπηκε" μόλις σε 500 κόπιες. Έχει επίσης άλλη μία ιδιομορφία, πως γράφει ότι κυκλοφόρησε το έτος 4988 (ο Γλαύκωψ σημειώνει στο ένθετο πως η ημερομηνία δεν είναι λάθος....τα σχόλια δικά σας). Το "ΗΩ" αποτελείται από συνολικά 5 κομμάτια ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής που μπορούμε να τα χαρακτηρίσουμε άμπιεντ ποπ και που εξελισσονται με αρκετά πειραματική διάθεση. Από το πρώτο κομμάτι νιώθουμε τον δεμένο ήχο των Viridi(a)n Green χτισμένο γύρω από το μπάσσο και την drum machine με κάποια διακριτικά γεμίσματα synth και ίσως κάποιες κιθάρες. Ο τίτλος του πρώτου κομματιού "The Brightest Star" δένει απόλυτα με τον τίτλο του δίσκου και πράγματι δεν θα μπορούσε το ξεκίνημα να είναι διαφορετικό. Το δεύτερο κομμάτι "Go Action" είναι μουσικά στο ίδιο ύφος με το πρώτο πάλι με το μπάσσο στον πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο. Το τρίτο κομμάτι "The Ice Queen" ακούγεται πιο ρετρό, με νωχελικό ρυθμό, και τη βασική μελωδία παιγμένη από πνευστά και με τα συνθεσάϊζερ να καθορίζουν την ατμόσφαιρα. Τα "In the Book it Says" και "Da-ance Without Cats" είναι σαφώς σε πιο ποπ ρυθμούς, αλλά δεν θα τα χαρακτηρίζαμε εύπεπτα, αναδεικνύουν τη διάθεση του συγκροτήματος για πειραματισμό. Άν κάποιοι από εσάς έχετε ακούσει κάτι από τα μεταγενέστερα άλμπουμ των Viridian Green, εδώ δεν θα τους αναγνωρίσετε πολύ εύκολα. Παρόλαυτά είναι ένα πολύ καλό άλμπουμ, απολαύστε το.

First of all, have a good month and happy vacation to all who are in vacation. And to those who have stayed behind still working (like us), have courage!!

Today's post has to do with a great personality of the Greek Independent scene (especially the dark and obscure one), ever since the 80's up until today and hopefully until tomorrow. It's all about an artist who has practiced "do it yourself" and for more than 20 years he is active compising and releasing music, besides that he is occupied with many other forms of art and expression such as painting, literature, sculpture, etc. - very often he uses more than one expression at the same time (ex: music with his own artwork). We are talking about Stefanos "Glafx" Koukoulomatis who among the various music platforms and bands he gave birth to, he also created Viridian Green, a project that many of you might know already throughout all its reincarnations (Viridin Green, Viridian Green, Viridian Grin). Some extra info about his work as well as short reviews you may find here . This is the first release of Viridian Green entitled "ΗΩ" (Io) which means Dawn, as inscribed in the insert ""ΗΩ"=Dawn=Goddess Dawn/Twilight. About Godess ΗΩ in the Ancient Greek mythology here's a reference that you might find interesting. In short, and in effort not to forget that we are presenting a record and not teaching mythology, Dawn was worshipped by the Ancient Greeks and according to one dominant version of the myth she was daughter of the Titan Hyperion and Theia who was sister of the Sun and Selene (moon). Dawn had her own part in this succession from Day to Night. We suppose that this title for the record ("ΗΩ") in this form means more than a new good start in the day.

Now about the record itself starting with the cover, as it is Glafx's sample of work and handmade! There are a few altered versions of this cover too. Needless to say that now it is an extinct and rare to find vinyl, since it was released only in 500 copies. Another... peculilarity is the date(s) indicated in the credits, as the music seems to be recorded in the year 4988 (instead of 1988) (you might as well comment on that). "ΗΩ" is consisted of 5 songs of electronic music, more specific in the style of ambient pop, eventually into experimental mood. Even from the first song one can listen to the solid and sound of V.G., built around the determined bass lines and the drum machine accompanied with synth fillings along with light guitars. The title of this first song, "The Brightest Star" is absolutely bonded with the album title. The second one "Go Action" is around the same vein with the bass lines on lead. The 3rd one called "The Ice Queen" sounds like a retro song, of indolent nature, with the help of sax and trumpet and the synths again determining a somewhat darker atmosphere. The last two songs "In the Book it Says" and "Da-ance Without Cats" are in a much more pop-ish style and rhythm, however not "digestible" as they bring the bands attitude towards more experimental treats. If some of you have listened to any of V.G.'s later (industrial) albums, in "ΗΩ" they will not be easily recognizable. Nevertheless it is a pretty good mLP, all you have to do is enjoy!!
