Scoria: Both 1986, Famous Music Records

Είχαμε παρουσιάσει τους Scoria και το πρώτο τους ομώνυμο e.p. σε κάποια από τις πρώτες αναρτήσεις μας τον Αύγουστο του 2010. Σήμερα έχουμε τη δεύτερη και τελευταία αγγλόφωνη κυκλοφορία τους με τίτλο "Both" στην Famous Music (σημερινή F.M. Records). Οπωσδήποτε ήταν ένα από τα πιο χαρακτηριστικά συγκροτήματα της δεκαετίας του 1980 με δικό τους ήχο και με μεγάλη εμπειρία ζωντανών εμφανίσεων από το 1984 έως το 1987. Παρόλ' αυτά δεν συνέχισαν περαιτέρω την εμπνευσμένη και καλή πορεία τους έως ότου επανεμφανίστηκαν στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 1990 για άλλο ένα δίσκο - αυτή τη φορά με ελληνικό στίχο. Το "Both" του 1986 [με αυτό το πανέμορφο εξώφυλλο] είναι ένα άριστο LP φτιαγμένο πάνω στα χνάρια του πρώτου και καταπληκτικού ομότιτλου e.p. Το "Both" επίσης εξερευνά κυρίως τα γνώριμα σε μας post punk μονοπάτια επιμένοντας στον καυστικό στίχο. Ξεχωρίζουν με την πρώτη τα "Time is Money", "X", και το καταπληκτικό "Phobia" που ανοίγει την Β πλευρά. Επίσης υπάρχει και μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα διασκευή στο "The Passion of Lovers" των Bauhaus, την οποία οι Scoria έχουν πραγματικά φέρει στα μέτρα τους (σημειώνουν στο οπισθόφυλλο: "cause we love this song"). Τα υπόλοιπα κομμάτια δεν θα αφήσουν κανέναν ασυγκίνητο. Αν και το παρόν άλμπουμ έχει "ανέβει" και παλιότερα σε φιλικό blog, αυτό είναι ένα καινούργιο και καθαρότερο 'rip'. Καλή ακρόαση.

One of our first posts back in August 2010 was Scoria's first homonymous e.p. Today we present their second and last "English-versed" release entitled "Both" on Famous Music Records (today's F.M. Records, famous release distributor in Greece and abroad). Scoria were definitely one of the most distinctive post punk groups of the 1980's, they had their own style and a large experience of live performances from 1984 up to 1987. Despite their great reputation they disbanded in 1987 but returned in the mid 90's with a new Greek-versed release. "Both" LP released in 1986 [with this beautiful front cover] is an outstanding release upon the same infallible post punk vein of their 1985 e.p. It explores familiar new wave/post punk trails and insists on quality and caustic verse. Upon first hearing "Time is Money", "X" and the astounding "Phobia" are to be distinguished. In addition, there's a quite interesting cover of Bauhaus' "The Passion of Lovers" that Scoria have mastered into their own style (as they note in the back cover "cause we love this song"). As for the rest of the songs, they are quite interesting too. Even if this LP has been re posted by a friendly blog, we have brought a fresh rip here. Have a good listening to this excellent LP.

Three 12'' eps/mlps for the end of March 2011 (Neon Judgement, The Passion of A Primitif, Hula)

1. Neon Judgement: Cockerill Sombre 12'' (Anything But Records, 1983)

Οι Neon Judgement από την μικρή πόλη Leuven του Βελγίου, πρωτοπόροι σε dark wave, ebm, επιθετικούς industrial ρυθμούς και σκοτεινές μελωδίες φτιαγμένες από ψυχρά synthesizer και drum-machine, αλλά και τα ιδιοφυή μυαλά του συγκροτήματος. Επιρροές κυρίως από Suicide, Cabaret Voltaire, Wire. Αν και πέρασαν αρκετές μεταμορφώσεις, και η αλήθεια είναι πως τα κλισέ δεν τους ταίριαζαν ποτέ, με τη διάρκεια των ετών έχουν πειραματιστεί πάνω σε πολλές φόρμες της "βιομηχανικής", και όχι μόνο, μουσικής. Εδώ έχουμε το πρώτο τους 12'' από το 1983 στο οποίο ήδη διαφαίνεται η πρωτοπόρα ορμή τους. Ανάμεσα στα 4 κομμάτια, σίγουρα αυτό που θα σας τραβήξει την προσοχή είναι το παγερό "Too Cold to Breathe", όχι πως τα υπόλοιπα πάνε πίσω από έμπνευση και δύναμη. Αναλόγως τη διάθεση λοιπόν...

ENG: Neon Judgement come from a Belgian smalltown called Leuven. They are pioneers of dark wave, ebm, aggressive industrial rythms and obscure tunes born out of cold synths and drum machines, as well as the geniouses of the band. They were mainly influenced by Suicide, Cabaret Voltaire and Wire. Even though they have transformed and evolved along the years, they never matched with cliches because they constantly experimented with their sound on the terms of more than one music genre. Here is their first 12'' from 1983, where one can feel the primal urge of inspiration, constituted of 4 songs. The chilling "Too Cold to Breathe" will draw your attention at once. The rest are quite powerful, depending on the mood....

2. The Passion of A Primitif: Songs from the Ant-Hill 12'' mLP (Antler, 1987)

Επίσης συγκρότημα με καταγωγή τις Κάτω Χώρες και συγκεκριμένα το Βέλγιο. Οι Passion of A Primitif ήταν δημιούργημα του Herman Gillis, ενός πολυτάλαντου, παραγωγικού και ιδιοφυούς μουσικού ο οποίος ασχολήθηκε και με τη σύνθεση συμβατικών new wave κομματιών, αλλά αργότερα πειραματίστηκε και με πιο ηλεκτρονικούς ήχους. Η μετέπειτα πορεία του περιλαμβάνει μεταξύ των άλλων τους Company of State, τους Poesie Noire (στους οποίους ακόμα συμμετέχει). Από τις λίγες πληροφορίες που κυκλοφορούν στο διαδίκτυο, φαίνεται πως το "Songs from the Ant-Hill" πρέπει να είναι η πρώτη δισκογραφική δουλειά στην οποία συμμετέχει. Είναι ένα mini-LP με δυνατές new wave/post punk συνθέσεις με πολύ καλή rhythm secction, καλές κιθάρες και με στοιχεία πειραματισμού. Δώστε του την ευκαιρία...

ENG: This is also a group that comes from Belgium. The Passion of A Primitif were a creation of Herman Gillis, a multi-talented, productive and ingenious musician, who produced merely conventional new wave music in the beginning, but later he devoted himself to electronics. Later on he worked with Company of State and Poesie Noire (until the present). Few information coming from the internet tell us that "Songs from the Ant-Hill" 12'' mini-LP must be his first released work. This is a powerful 12'', all new wave/post punk music with great rhythm section and nice guitars, even with some elements of experimentation. Give it a chance...

3. Hula: Black Pop Workout (Red Rhino, 1982)

Οι Hula έρχονται από Sheffield της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας και είναι ένα επίσης πρωτοπόρο σχήμα στην new wave και industrial σκηνή. Με επιρροές και συναναστροφές από Cabaret Voltaire, μέχρι They Must be Russians και Clock DVA, αυτό το πρώτο 12'' δεν θα μπορούσε να περάσει απαρατήρητο. Με τον ωραίο τίτλο "Black Pop Workout" έδωσαν το έναυσμα στην δισκογραφική τους πορεία που συνεχίστηκε για ακόμα 10 χρόνια, κατά τη διάρκεια των οποίων άλλαξαν σε πιο χορευτικές και σύνθετες φόρμες αλλά και σε pop και funky στοιχεία. Το "Black Pop Workout" είναι πολύ διαφορετικό σχεδόν από ο,τιδήποτε άλλο έχουν κάνει, καθώς πρόκειται για ένα "ωμό" σκοτεινό αριστούργημα, όπου πίσω από τον βασικό new/dark wave μουσικό σκελετό, διαφαίνεται η διάθεση να πάει η μουσική τους ένα βήμα πιο πέρα. Τα παρανοϊκά φωνητικά και οι καταιγιστικές drums προσθέτουν στην ατμόσφαιρα που διαχέεται μέσα από τα αυλάκια του "Feeding the Animal" αλλά και των άλλων μικρών διαμαντιών. Μάλλον θα το λατρέψετε...

Entitled "Black Pop Workout" marks the beginning of a 10-year discography. During this period they evolved and changed constantly by adding danceable or complex industrial forms in their style as well as pop or funky aspects. "Black Pop Workout" stands out because it is a dark, 'raw' masterpiece where one can see potential behind the music. Paranoid vocals and tempestuous drumming add to the diffusing atmosphere of the first track "Feeding the Animal" and the rest of the songs that follow its lead. We believe that you will love it...

The Ophelia's Garden: Blood Wedding, 1997 Physis Records

...Λόγω μερικών δυσκολιών που προέκυψαν, αργήσαμε να "ξεκινήσουμε" το 2011. Όμως δεν εγκαταλείψαμε, άλλωστε δεν έχουμε τέτοιο σκοπό. Έστω και αργοπορημένα ευχόμαστε σε όλους τους φίλους και τις φίλες, όλους τους περαστικούς και μόνιμους αναγνώστες να έχετε μια καλή χρονιά, με υγεία και μπόλικη καλή μουσική. Τουλάχιστον για την μουσική θα βάλουμε και εμείς το χέρι μας.

Σήμερα λοιπόν, παρουσιάζουμε ένα Ελληνικό συγκρότημα της δεκαετίας του 1990, οι οποίοι εάν δεν είναι ήδη γνωστοί στους εραστές της ανεξάρτητης σκηνής, με αυτή την ανάρτηση θα θέλαμε να τους κάνουμε γνωστούς.
Ο λόγος φυσικά είναι για τους The Ophelia's Garden. Δημιουργήθηκαν στα 1994, από τους Κυριάκο Ηλιού και Πέτρο Τσαλπατούρο οι οποίοι ξεπήδησαν μέσα από τις στάχτες ενός παλιότερου συγκροτήματος που λεγόταν The Servants of Mephistopheles, και υπηρέτησαν τον γοτθικό ήχο μέσα από κάποιες εμφανίσεις, και δύο ντέμο κασέτες στις αρχές του 1990 (τίτλοι: "Necrophilia" και "Macabredance"). Την δεύτερη κασέτα τους μπορείτε να την βρείτε εδώ στο blog του tape recorder.

Οι Ophelia's Garden κυκλοφόρησαν την πρώτη τους ολοκληρωμένη δουλειά σε cd το 1997 με τον τίτλο "Blood Wedding" από την ανεξάρτητη Psysis Records. Το αποτέλεσμα σχεδόν δύο χρόνων δουλειάς (1995-1996) είναι ένα καταπληκτικό άλμπουμ ορόσημο και υποδειγματικό για ολόκληρη την Ελληνική σκηνή. Τα δύο κύρια μέλη του συγκροτήματος ήταν οι Κυριάκος Ηλιού (κιθάρα, μπάσο) και Πέτρος Τσαλπατούρος (στίχοι και φωνητικά), πλαισιωμένοι από τους Γιώργο Μπουσούνη (πλήκτρα), Γιώργο Γκίνη (ηχητικά εφέ) και τέλος την Μαρία Μπατιστάτου (από τους Ding An Sich) στα δεύτερα φωνητικά.

Μέσα από αυτό το πανέμορφο ντεμπούτο, ξεδιπλώνεται ένα συνολικό μουσικό αλλά και στιχουργικό ταλέντο, με αποτέλεσμα τα 9 φανταστικά τραγούδια να είναι το ένα καλύτερο από το άλλο. Όλα τους, λυρικά, μελαγχολικά, εμπνευσμένα με λιτές αλλά όμορφες ενορχηστρώσεις που αγκαλιάζουν την βαθιά και εκφραστική φωνή του Πέτρου Τσαλπατούρου - σήμα κατατεθέν τους από την εποχή των Servants of Mephistopheles. Σας προτρέπουμε να διαβάσετε και τους στίχους των τραγουδιών γιατί έτσι θα μπορείτε να ταξιδέψετε στον κόσμο των Ophelia's Garden, μαζί με χαμένους έρωτες, ασίγαστα πάθη, φαντάσματα του παρελθόντος και μυθικά πλάσματα. Είναι ένας παράλληλος παραμυθένιος κόσμος στον οποίο έρωτας και θάνατος αποκαλύπτονται ως δύο όψεις της Ζωής και όπου η Μοίρα έχει την πρώτη και τελευταία κουβέντα, ενώ η Δύναμη της Φύσης είναι ο καταλύτης όλων... Έτσι, σε συνδυασμό με τη μουσική και τα φωνητικά, ένα πραγματικά αιθέριο άλμπουμ, γεμάτο γοτθικό ρομαντισμό και γνήσια μελαγχολία που προτρέπει τις ψυχές σε αναζήτηση.
Σε όσους λοιπόν αρέσει η ποίηση των Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Baudelaire, (Lord) George Gordon Byron και άλλων καταραμένων ποιητών, συστήνουμε ανεπιφύλακτα το "Blood Wedding" για τις παγερές νύχτες του χειμώνα.

...Due to certain difficulties we are somehow starting late for 2011. Howerver, we have not "abandoned ship" as we don't mean to. Even at this late date, we'd like to wish you all, friends readers and passers a healthy new year filled with great music. At least for the music part we will work too.

Today, we present a Greek group from the 1990's, who if they are not already widely known to the lovers of Greek alternative scene, then we'd like to make them known through this post.

The Ophelia's Garden were created by Kyriakos Iliou and Petros Tsalpatouros through the ashes of an older band called The Servants of Mephistopheles and....served the gothic rock sound and genre with live shows and two demo tapes from 1988 to early 90's (Necrophilia, Macabredance). The second tape can be found following the link to the tape recorder blog.

The Ophelia's Garden released their first full length work in cd format in 1997, entitled "Blood Wedding" under the alternative label Physis Records. This nearly two year (1995-1996) outcome is an excellent landmark and exemplary album for the contemporary alternative Greek music scene. The two main members were (as aforementioned) Kyriakos Iliou (guitar, bass guitar) and Petros Tsalpatouros (vocals and lyrics) with the help of Giorgos Boussounis (piano, keyboards), Giorgos Ginis (treatments and effects) and last but not least, Maria Batistatou (of Ding An Sich) (backing vocals). An overall songwriting talent is unfolded through this beautiful debut cd, resulting to 9 excellent songs. All 9 songs are lyrical, melancholic, inspired, with simple instrumentation embracing Petros Tsalpatouros' excellent deep voice - their trademark since the days of The Servants of Mephistopheles.

We urge you to read the lyrics as well, because you will be able to wander in the realm of the Ophelia's Garden, with lost loves, endless passions, ghosts of the past and mythical creatures... A parallel fairy tale world is created here in which love and death appear to be the two faces of Life. Moreover, Fate decides for all and the Power of Nature is the resolving agent of everything. Thus, it is an ethereal music album, a combination of great music and lyrics, gothic romanticism and genuine melancholy, urging the souls to quest.

To all of you who love the poetry of E.A. Poe, Charles Baudelaire, (Lord) George Gordon Byron and other "cursed" poets, we suggest "Blood Wedding" for the cold winter nights.

Spinalonga: 13th Relation mini-LP, 1994 Poeta Negra

Μπήκε ο Νοέμβριος και επίσημα...ο χειμώνας λοιπόν. Ας τον καλωσορίσουμε ακούγοντας το δεύτερο πόνημα των Spinalonga με τίτλο "The 13th Relation" που κυκλοφόρησε επίσης από την Poeta Negra εν έτει 1994. Είναι ένας δίσκος μικρότερης διάρκειας απ΄ ότι το "Bid Time Return", αλλά οπωσδήποτε όχι και μικρότερης σπουδαιότητας. Εξ' ίσου το "The 13th..." είναι μια εμπνευσμένη και σκοτεινή παρέα μουσικών κομματιών, μπορούμε να πούμε - το ένα καλύτερο από το άλλο. Από άποψη στυλ κινείται επίσης στο χώρο του dark ambient και dark wave, αποτελείται δε από ιδέες που προϋπήρχαν στο προηγούμενο άλμπουμ και εδώ βρίσκονται ένα βήμα πιο πέρα, αλλά και από μια πιο σύγχρονη χροιά στον ήχο με την χρήση του επαναλαμβανόμενου μοτίβου στα τύμπανα (ή drum-machine;). Άπλετο μυστήριο και σκοτάδι ξεχύνεται καθώς μπαίνει το πρώτο κομμάτι - χωρισμένο σε δύο ενότητες: 1a) "Elevation", 1b) "Phantom Supply". Το πρώτο λειτουργεί ως εισαγωγή στο δεύτερο. Η ατμόσφαιρα συνεχίζεται στο ογκώδες “Despair” με τα ταιριαστά βαθιά φωνητικά, αλλά και στο "Dalmatia". Τα υπόλοιπα 3 κομμάτια κινούνται στον ίδιο σκοτεινό και ομιχλώδη ήχο, ξεχωρίζει το "Culprits" και το ομώνυμο "The 13th Relation" με τα ψιθυριστά και αργόσυρτα φωνητικά. Το "Crusoe" είναι ουσιαστικά η εισαγωγή του "The 13th Relation" και μαζί κλείνουν το δίσκο χρησιμοποιώντας ένα κοινό θέμα, παρόμοιο με τον τρόπο που και τα "Elevation/Phantom Supply" ανοίγουν το δίσκο. Ας σημειωθεί πως όλα τα κομμάτια κρύβουν μια δυναμική που δεν αποκαλύπτεται από το πρώτο άκουσμα Τέλος, μην ξεχνάμε πως το εγχείρημα που λέγεται Spinalonga εδώ αποτελείται από ένα one-man-band άτομο με το όνομα Danny Drablow, όπως σημειώνεται στο οπισθόφυλλο.

Η Spinalonga δεν έχει δείξει όλες τις πτυχές και τα μυστικά της, μένει να ανακαλύψουμε πολλά ακόμα. Καλή ακρόαση.

Spinalonga: The 13th Relation mini-LP, 1994 Poeta Negra

It's already November… and officially winter, let us welcome this winter by listening to the second album by Spinalonga, entitled "The 13th Relation" also released by Poeta Negra Records in 1994. Compared to their first LP, "Bid Time Return" the "The 13th Relation" is shorter in length, but not shorter in quality. Just like their previous release, this mini-LP is an inspired and dark compilation of songs, each one better than the other along the way. Speaking of Style it is a dark ambient/dark wave mini-LP, full of ideas that seemed to exist dormant in the first LP and/or evolved here for the first time, forcing one step beyond into an up-to-date enrichment of sound, such is for example the repeated drum motif (or drum machine?). There's a pouring dark and mysterious atmosphere in their music even from the beginning of this record with the 2-unit first song: 1a) "Elevation" and 1b) "Phantom Supply". Same atmosphere continues even more massively on “Despair” with equally matching deep vocals. "Dalmatia" draws along in the same vein, too. The rest of the songs are in the same obscure and distinctive dark sound, both "Culprits" and "The 13th Relation" stand out, with "Crusoe" being the actual intro for the homonymous track. This couplet of songs closes the album more or less in the way "Elevation/Phantom Supply" open the album. Let’s note here that all the songs will revealed themselves progressively, but not too soon. Last, but not least that Danny Drablow is credited as the one-man-band, creator and composer of all songs, as you can see in the back cover notes.

Spinalonga has not shown all its aspects and secrets yet, lot more is expected along the way. Have a good listening to this one!!!

Forward Music Quintet: Vanishing Soldiers 1991, F.M.O. Records distr. by Wipe Out

Οι Forward Music Quintet είναι ίσως ένα από τα καλύτερα εγχώρια σχήματα, αν όχι το καλύτερο και το πιο πρωτοποριακό. Κυκλοφόρησαν τρείς μεγάλους δίσκους και κάποια κομμάτια σε συλλογές (βλ. Random Relations 2, Crash). Ο πρώτος δίσκος τους θεωρείται και ο καλύτερός τους (Mystery of a Dying Species, 1983), ο επόμενος κινείται στο ίδιο στυλ (Glory and Betrayal, 1985). Το 1991 που κυκλοφόρησε ο τρίτος και τελευταίος δίσκος τους (Vanishing Soldiers), πλέον σαν ντουέτο (Natasha + Shaman), ο ήχος τους ήταν διαφοροποιημένος, πιο ηλεκτρονικός και σε darkwave φόρμες. Εδώ κι εδώ πληροφορίες κι άλλα άλμπουμ τους.

Σήμερα παρουσιάζουμε ακριβώς αυτόν τον τελευταίο δίσκο. Όπως προαναφέραμε, το "Vanishing Soldiers" του 1991, έχει αρκετά διαφορετικό ήχο από τα 2 προηγούμενα άλμπουμ τα οποία κινούνταν στο χώρο του post-punk. Αυτός ο τελευταίος τους δίσκος είναι επίσης ένα αριστούργημα φτιαγμένο με synth και drum machine, κινείται σε πιο σκοτεινά μονοπάτια από τους άλλους δύο. Σε αυτό συντελεί και η καταπληκτικά παγερή φωνή της Natasha S. (Νατάσα Συρεγγέλα), αλλά και οι ίδιες οι συνθέσεις που συνθέτουν ένα μικρό soundtrack για σκοτεινά όνειρα. Το δυσοίωνο ηχοτοπίο ξεκινάει με το mid-tempo "The Preserving Process", τα λόγια του οποίου κατά πάσα πιθανότητα περιγράφουν τον τρόπο ταρίχευσης στην αρχαία Αίγυπτο. Η απαγγελία του πρόσφατα χαμένου Shaman (Γιώργος Μακρίδης) στολισμένη με επιβλητικά synth και κάποιες κιθάρες. Έτσι ο ακροατής μπαίνει κατευθείαν στα "ενδότερα" και στην επική μπαλάντα "Words of Steel" με την Natasha S. να δίνει ίσως μια από τις καλύτερες ερμηνείες της. Έπεται η μεγάλη βουτιά..."The Big Dive Down" μελωδικό mid-tempo κομμάτι το οποίο "φορτώνει" προς το τέλος με τα καταπληκτικά φωνητικά και τους ψίθυρους που ακούγονται ενδιάμεσα. Το λιτό "All the Strangers" με την ήρεμη εισαγωγή, είναι instrumental. Το επόμενο ιδιαίτερα σκοτεινό "Legion" με χαρακτηριστική μελωδία και ρυθμό του αποτελεί μια γέφυρα προς το φανταστικό "For the Wicked", ένα darkwave ύμνο, με καταπληκτική μελωδία, κιθάρες που υπερφορτίζουν την ατμόσφαιρα, και τα -πάλι- εξαίσια φωνητικά με τις επίσης φανταστικές εξάρσεις... τί να πεις.... απλά το ξανακούς!!! Αμέσως μετά μια μικρή ανάσα με το πρόσταγμα "Attention" στην αρχή του "The Thorns of Desire" και την απρόσωπη απαγγελία της Natasha S. και του Shaman - τοποθετείται εν μέσω μάχης και πυροβολισμών, μέσω των στίχων μιλούν οι νεκροί στρατιώτες..... λόγια με υπαρξιακές προεκτάσεις. Forward Music Quintet perhaps were one of the best Greek bands, if not the best and the most pioneering. They released three LPs and had some compilation contributions (see Random Relations 2, Crash). Their first record (Mystery of a Dying Species, 1983) is considered to be their finest. The second one (Glory and Betrayal, 1985) is a good LP but not as great as the first. Six years after, in 1991, they released their third and last LP (Vanishing Soldiers) and being an actual duet (Natasha S. with the Shaman), their sound became darker and colder. Today we present to you this last one. As we mentioned above, 1991's "Vanishing Soldiers" is distinctively different from the previous 2 LPs, which had a post-punk sound. However, this last LP is more synth oriented, and much darker in style. This is a result of the cold and detached singing-reciting work by Natasha S. (Natasha Syrengela) along with the actual music by The Shaman, altogether to synthesize a soundrack for dark dreams. This ominous soundscape kicks off with the mid-tempo track "The Preserving Process", the lyrics most probably describe methods of embalming in ancient Egypt. The recitation by (the recently deceased) Shaman (George Makridis) ornamented with imposing synth and some guitar work. We are ready now to enter inner depths of the epic "Words of Steel", one of the best songs of the LP and Natasha's best singing moments, above all, an excellent song. Right after that we have to fall in.... "The Big Dive Down" a melodic mid-tempo track that becomes a high-tempo towards the end. Again here there are great vocals and whisper effects. Next is τhe austere and atmospheric instrumental "All the Strangers". "Legion" another beautiful tune is the bridge to the second greatest song of the LP, "For the Wicked", a fantastic darkwave anthem with great music as the guitars overcharge the atmosphere furthermore. Again here the great voice of Natasha S. stands out, pitching high at times.... you just have to listen again. Right after that, the command bursts: "Attention!!" as "The Thorns of Desire" takes off, where the duet recites in between battle effects [great lyrics by the way, with existential hints]. The record closes with the "Το Αέναον" (meaning: The Perpetual, The Everlasting), another atmospheric instrumental in the same vein of the rest of the album. Overall, an exceptionally pleasurable LP. Scoria: Scoria e.p., 1985 Famous Music Records

Ένα από τα συγκροτήματα που επέζησαν της δεκαετίας του '80' στην Ελλάδα με όσες αντιξοότητες και δυσκολίες που μπορεί να υπήρξαν ήταν οι Scoria (=Σκώρια)., οι οποίοι είχαν δύο πολύ καλές κυκλοφορίες καθώς και μερικά κομμάτια σε διάφορες συλλογές (δείτε εδώ). Σήμερα παρουσιάζουμε το πρώτο τους 12-ιντσο e.p. με τίτλο το όνομά τους. Όσον αφορά τον ήχο τους είναι σε post punk ύφος, και τα τραγούδια τους αρκετά δυναμικά. Ευρηματικές μελωδίες πλαισιώνουν το κάθε ένα από τα 4 τραγούδια αυτού του πρώτου αναγνωριστικού e.p., καταιγιστικές ντραμς και μπάσσο παιγμένα στην ακρίβεια. Όσο για τα φωνητικά, αυτά αποδίδουν μια συγκρατημένη παράνοια συγκερασμένη από στίχους που υποστηρίζουν αυτή την συγκρατημένη οργή και καταφανή ειρωνεία απέναντι σε ο,τιδήποτε σκουριασμένο. Ειδικά στο πρώτο (και ομώνυμο) κομμάτι τους είναι καθαρή η κοινωνική -και όχι μόνο- κριτική πως η σκουριά (=Scoria) είναι η μεγαλύτερη αρρώστεια της εποχής μας, πως τα πάντα τριγύρω έχουν σκουριάσει, και πως τελικά δεν υπάρχει ελπίδα αφού πια η επιστήμη απεφάνθη πως η σκουριά είναι μόνο μέσα στο μυαλό μας και τη φαντασία μας. Σίγουρα θα τους διαβάσετε... Το "Tired Lover" έχει μια από τις πιο έμμονες εισαγωγές με το πολύ χαρακτηριστικό μπάσσο και την κιθάρα που "ζωγραφίζει". Επίσης και το "No More Cries" με το πανέμορφο ρεφραίν του και την rock n roll μαεστρία στο ρυθμό είναι στα ίδια επίπεδα, απλά καταπληκτικό. Τέλος, το επικό λόγω τίτλου (και διάρκειας: 7 λεπτών) "Ladies And Gentlemen Please Welcome... Your New Golden God" κλείνει αυτό το καταπληκτικό e.p. στο ίδιο στυλ των προηγούμενων τραγουδιών με το μπάσσο κυριολεκτικά να οδηγεί το κομμάτι, τα σπαρταριστά σαρκαστικά φωνητικά και την κιθάρα που γεμίζει τα κενά. Ο τίτλος και οι στίχοι είναι μια κριτική κατά των υπερ-καταναλωτικών μας συνηθειών τις οποίες παρομοιάζουν με θρησκεία.

One of these bands that survived the 80s in Greece whatever difficulties may have been is Scoria (=rust), who actually managed to release 2 records during 1985 and 1986 and a few other tracks in various compilations (check here). Today we present their first omonymous post punk 12" e.p. It is consisted of 4 very dynamic songs with imaginative melodies, stormy drums and bass played in accuracy. As for the paranoid and sarcastic vocals they interpret the same as sarcastic and ironic lyrics who speak against whatever is 'rusted'. Especially in the first same titled track full of social criticism as they portray a world filled with rust (=Scoria) and that rust is the greatest disease. The diagnosis in the end, is that rust does not exist anywhere else but in our imagination. Read along as you listen... Next song "Tired Lover" starts off with one of the greatest bass riffs, that it may become obsessive - the guitar 'draws' along too. Next one "No More Cries" with the beautiful refrain and the rock n roll twist in its rhythm unfolds the group's skill and talent. Last song for the e.p. is "Ladies And Gentlemen Please Welcome... Your New Golden God" lasting 7 minutes long, an epic in terms of title, lyrics and length. Once again, the bass leads on the music, the quivering sarcastic voice and the guitar filling the gaps in beautiful ways. The title and the lyrics again criticize our over-consuming habits compared as some kind of religion.

Telepathy Series Γ+Δ: Ding An Sich split w/ ΑΩ, 1998 CAPP Records

Εν μέσω καύσωνα, και σε συνέχεια από το προηγούμενο και σχετικό με τον "Γλαύκωψ" post είναι το σημερινό, που αφορά μια κυκλοφορία της Capp (της ιδιόκτητης ανεξάρτητης δισκογραφικής του) με τίτλο "Telepathy Series Γ+Δ". Μέρος από σειρά κυκλοφοριών οι οποίες ουσιαστικά είναι split ep's που απαρτίζονται από μουσικώς σχετικά αλλά και άσχετα μεταξύ τους συγκροτήματα. Όλες αυτές οι κυκλοφορίες τις έχει προσωπικά επιμεληθεί ο ίδιος ο "Γλαύκωψ", κυρίως από άποψη εξωφύλλων, αλλά και μουσικής παραγωγής. Στη συγκεκριμένη κυκλοφορία παίρνουν μέρος 2 συγκροτήματα της "σκοτεινής" gothic και dark electro εγχώριας σκηνής.

Στην πρώτη πλευρά του split έχουμε δύο κομμάτια των Ding An Sich, παλιό σχήμα της gothic rock σκηνής από τη δεκαετία του 80, τα "When Tears Have Eyes" και "Evening Wind". Τυπικά gothic rock τραγούδια με όμορφες μελωδίες στην κιθάρα και χαρακτηριστική rhythm section. Όσον αφορά το όνομά τους (για την ιστορία) αυτό προέρχεται από κεντρική ιδέα βιβλίου (Κριτική της Αγνής Λογικής) του φιλόσοφου Εμανουέλ Κάντ, και σημαίνει "το πράγμα αυτό καθαυτό".

Την δεύτερη πλευρά καταλαμβάνουν οι ΑΩ, ένα συγκρότημα της dark electro σκηνής ("Last Night's Vision", "Silence" και "New Dark Age") με όλα τα χαρακτηριστικά του είδους: ηλεκτρονικό ήχο με συνεχές beat στην drum machine, και χαοτικά synth. Όμως οι ΑΩ ξεχωρίζουν αρκετά λόγω των φωνητικών που είναι παραμορφωμένα και λόγω της μοναδικής

ατμόσφαιρας των κομματιών τους με τη βοήθεια παραμορφωμένων συνθεσάϊζερς και κιθάρας σε κάποια σημεία παρασύρουν τον ανυποψίαστο ακροατή σε εφιαλτικά ηχοτοπία και πραγματικά σκοτεινά μονοπάτια. Η εγρήγορση που προκαλείται από τον φρενήρη ρυθμό εντείνει αυτό το συναίσθημα του κυνηγητού και της αποξένωσης - πολύ γνώριμο σε όσους ζουν σε μεγάλες πόλεις.

Η συγκεκριμένη κυκλοφορία είναι αρκετά σπάνια πια και είναι σημαντική γιατί έφερε στην επιφάνεια 2 συγκροτήματα που ζούσαν ως τότε στην αφάνεια και στην αγάπη μόνο των (υποθέτουμε) λιγοστών φανατικών οπαδών τους. Είμαστε σίγουροι πως γνωρίζοντάς τα θα ανακαλύψετε μια ακόμα πτυχή στην ιστορία της ανεξάρτητης Ελληνικής σκηνής. Θα βρείτε το λινκ εδώ.

Amidst heatwave, today's post is a continuation of the previous one about Glafx and deals with a release from Capp Records (Glafx's own independent record company) entitled "Telepathy Series Γ+Δ". It is part of a series of released split e.p.'s constituted by similar and non similar bands/projects. Each part of this "Telepathy Series" is edited by Glafx himself - especially the cover artwork - and sometimes the music production. In "Telepathy Series - 3+4" 2 groups of the gothic rock and dark electronic local scene partcipate.

On side one there are two songs by Ding An Sich ("When Tears Have Eyes" and "Evening Wind") which is a band that comes from the 80s. These are two typical songs from the gothic genre with beautiful melodies on guitar and a robust rhythm section. As for their name now (cause it might ring a bell) its borrowed by Immanuel Kant's book "Critique of Pure Reason", and the precise meaning is "a thing to itself".

Side two is occupied by ΑΩ (pronounced Alfa Omega) and three songs "Last Night's Vision", "Silence" and "New Dark Age". ΑΩ were a dark electro group, whose sound must be familiar those who know the style: electronic sounds and samplers with a frenzy drum machine filled-in by chaotic synth effects. Although that might sound stereotypical, ΑΩ are somehow special in the way of unique altered vocals and the atmosphere enriched by distorted synthesizers and guitars. Effectively, that sound lures the unsuspected listener towards nightmarish dark soundscapes and introverse mental states, while the frenzy beat intenses the emotion of chase and isolation - we find it quite familiar as to the anxiety built in by everyday urban life.

This particular release is a rare one and important as it brings to light two unknown bands that probably existed only in knowledge of their few closest fans. We are certain that once you know them, you will discover another hidden aspect about contemporary independent Greek scene. The link is that way...

Spinalonga: Bid Time Return, 1990, Poeta Negra Records

Σήμερα ανεβαίνει ένας σπανιότατος, αλλά και καθόλου καλοκαιρινός δίσκος... Είναι ένας δίσκος που είτε τον μισείς ή τον αγαπάς,για να συντροφεύει τα σκοτάδια σου, και για να σε κάνει να αποφεύγεις τα σκοτεινά σοκκάκια. Στην πραγματικότητα είναι όπως το πάρει κανείς, γιατί το σκοτάδι της ψυχής και της ανθρώπινης ύπαρξης πολύ δύσκολα παίρνει μορφή, πολύ δύσκολα να το αντιπροσωπεύσει ένας ήχος... ή μια μουσική. Πάντως πιστεύουμε πως το μουσικό σχήμα της σημερινής ανάρτησης τα καταφέρνει κάπως.

Πρόκειται για τους Spinalonga, ένα συγκρότημα μυστήριο, απαρτίζεται από ένα, από δύο, είναι κανονική μπάντα; Είναι μόνο αυτός ο τύπος ο Daniel Drablow ή κι άλλος ένας ο Daliweb? Ποιός ξέρει; Πρόκειται πάντως για ένα από τα πιο μυστήρια σχήματα της Ελληνικής αντ σκηνής που παίζουν σκοτεινό και ατμοσφαιρικό ambient, με πολλά darkwave στοιχεία. Ουσιαστικά από τα οκτώ κομμάτια του δίσκου, μόνο τα δύο έχουν στίχους, και ειναι εξόχως επιβλητικά και μεγάλα σε διάρκεια (Elaine, Tide). Το Bid Time Return είναι ουσιαστικά τοπρώτο τους άλμπουμ. Οι Spinalonga πήραν το όνομά τους από ένα νησί που βρίσκεταιστα ανατολικά ανοιχτά της Κρήτης κοντά στην πασίγνωστη Ελούντα. Το νησάκι αυτό έχει μεγάλη ιστορία, είναι γεμάτη πολέμους, κατακτήσεις, και Ενετικά κάστρα, δηλάδή άλλαξε πολλές φορές χέρια στην ιστορία του, αλλά και ονομασία. Στα αρχαία χρόνια λεγόταν Καλυδώνα, στα νεότερα λέγεται πια Spinalonga - ονομασία Ενετική που σημαίνει "Μακρύ Αγκάθι". Εκεί λοιπόν υπήρξε μία από τις τελευταίες κοινότητες λεπρών στην Ευρώπη κατά τα χρόνια 1903-1957. Λέγεται πως οι λεπροί έμπαιναν στο νησί από την λεγόμενη "Πύλη του Δάντη". Πραγματικά επιβλητικό!

Πως να μην είναι στοιχειωμένο ένα τέτοιο μέρος... κουβάλησε τόση οδύνη και πόνο μέσα στο Χρόνο. Τόσο σκοτάδι... [πληροφορίες από wikipedia]. (Δείτε και φωτογραφίες που βρήκα στο διαδίκτυο).

Today's post is a rare to find, but not at all a summertime mood LP... It's a record that you either hate or love, to join you either way in your darkness, and make you avoid dark streets. It is really very hard to represent the darkness of the soul and human existence with sound. Yet, we believe that this group achieves it up to a certain point.

It is about Spinalonga, a mysterious group. Is one or two people part of this group? Who knows? Is it only this fellow Daniel Drablow or another one called Daliweb? However they are a Greek band associated with the underground scene and they play dark atmospheric ambientmusic with lots of darkwave treats. Technically out of the eight tracks of this LP, only two of them have lyrics, and they are exquisite, imposing and long (Elaine, Tide). "Bid Time Return" LP is their first album (on Poeta Negra Records). Their curious name has been borrowed by an island east of Crete near the famous Elouda. This little island has a long story of wars, conquests, Venetian castles that now seem totally haunted. Changed conquerors and names too, as in theancient times it was called Kalidon, the Venetians named it Spinalonga (means long thorn in Latin). The most recent shocking fact aboutSpinalonga is that it has been one of the last leper colonies in Europe in the years 1903-1957. It is said that the lepers used to enter thisisland from a gate called "Dante's Gate". Really imposing!!! How cant this place be not haunted at all?? So much suffering and so much pain. Now that you know this detail about the band's name it might be easier to visualize the music, because is is not easy to describe it with words.

South of No North, Live@Grava Lyceum 1984

Τί να πει κανείς για τους South of No North;;; Κατά τη γνώμη μου είναι το μεγαλύτερο darkwave συγκρότημα που έβγαλε αυτή η χώρα. Κυριάρχησαν σε δύσκολους καιρούς κατά τους οποίους ήταν δύσκολες οι οποιεσδήποτε διαφορετικές "φωνές" εκτός κατεστημένου ήχου και στη ρόκ αλλά και στην εγχώρια μουσική...βιοτεχνία γενικότερα. Μπορεί να πει κανείς πολλά για αυτούς...πως είναι παραγνωρισμένοιαλλά και υπερτιμημένοι, και τα περισσότερα μπορεί και να ισχύουν, αλλά είναι η μουσική τους τέτοια που αναπτύχθηκε από δίσκο σε δίσκο με πολύ ωραίο και δημιουργικό τρόπο. Ώσπου έβγαλαν το ομώνυμο άλμπουμ τους το 1990, το οποίο είναι το τελειότερο και τους έκανε γνωστούς στο ευρύ κοινό. Όχι βέβαια πως τα 2 προηγούμενα δεν ήταν αξιόλογα. Προσωπική μας άποψη είναι πως το καλύτερο - πιο "θανατερό" άλμπουμ είναι το δεύτερο "Fell Frozen", αλλά το πιο ολοκληρωμένο μουσικά είναι το τρίτο (ομώνυμο και τελευταίο). Όσο για το πρώτο "La Crimae Christi", είναι η τραχιά και πρωτόλεια μορφή με τις καταφανείς επιρροές τους. Η σημερινή ανάρτηση δεν αφορά κανένα από τα μεταγενέστερα άλμπουμ, αλλά μια πειρατική κυκλοφορία που αφορά το πρώτο τους live, την πρώτη τους ζωντανή εμφάνιση στο Λύκειο της Γκράβας (μαζί με άλλα συγκροτήματα της εποχής Art of Parties, Cpt Nefos, Metro Decay) το Μάρτιο του 1984, υποθέτω λίγο πριν την κυκλοφορία του πρώτου La Crimae Christi. Περιέχει κομμάτια τα οποία βρίσκονται στον πρώτο τους δίσκο αλλά και κομμάτια τα οποία δεν βρίσκονται πουθενά αλλού και είναι τιτλοφορημένα ως "Unreleased" - και κάποιος μπορεί να αναρωτηθεί γιατί ποτε δεν κυκλοφόρησαν το υλικό αυτό. Το πρώτο .... ίσως λέγεται "The Other Side (of the room)", το δεύτερο δεν αναγνωρίζεται, αλλά το τρίτο είναι μια ιδιότυπη διασκευή στο "Exercise One" των Joy Division με ίδια τη μουσική αλλά στίχους των South. Το κομματι αυτό υπάρχει στην επανέκδοση του Fell Frozen από την Dead Scarlet Records.

Πάντως ξεδιπλώνουν όλο το ταλέντο τους και την ικανότητά τους για ζωντανές εμφανίσεις. Όσοι τους είδαν (με ελαφρά αλλαγμένη σύνθεση) στη επανασύνδεσή τους το 2003 (Elfentanz 2), αλλά και όσοι τυχεροί τους είχαν δει σε οποιαδήποτε εμφάνιση κατά τα χρόνια της ακμής τους σίγουρα ξέρουν γιατί μιλάμε.

Λοιπόν οι South of No North σε πρωτόλεια ζωντανή εμφάνιση εδώ... απολαύστε τους.

What is there to say about South of No North??? In our opinion, they are the greatest darkwave band of Greece. They dominated in those difficult years, where any difference from the "established" culture (and sub-culture) in rock and local music scene was difficult to handle.

One can say a lot about South of No North...for example that they were unrecognized or even overvalued, and most of the above might be true, but their music evolved from one record to the other nicely and smoothly. In 1990 they released their Omonymous LP which is their finest and made them known to a wider audience. That doesn't mean that the previous 2 LPs were not worthy at all. Our personal opinion is that their "deadliest" LP is their 2nd entitled "Fell Frozen" (Creep Records, 1986), but their most complete is their 3rd omonymous "South of No North" (Wipe out, 1990). As for the first -but not least- "La Crimae Christi" (Creep Records, 1984), it is actually the amateur effort with all the obvious influences (Joy Division, Bauhaus). Today's post isn't about any of their official releases, but about a pirate release of their first live appearance ever at the Grava Lyceum (along with other legendary bands of the era, the Art of Parties, Cpt Nefos, Metro Decay) , supposedly before they ever released "La Crimae Christi". This live recording contains songs from their 1st LP, as well as 3 more "unreleased" songs - wonder why they never released those great extras. The possible title for the first of those unreleased might be "The Other Side (of the room)", the second can't be recognized, but the third is a special cover of Joy Division's "Exercise One" but with lyrics changed by the South of No North. There is a studio version of this track added to the re-release of "Fell Frozen" by Dead Scarlet Records.

The band unfolds their talent and ability to perform live. Whoever saw their live reunion appearance at the Elfentanz 2 festival in 2003 and those really lucky ones who have seen them playing live along the years of their heyday, really know what we are talking about.
