Glafx: There is No Love [The 7 Gates of Punishment: 1st Gate] LP, 1997 CApp Records

Ενώ μπήκαμε σε χειμερινή ατμόσφαιρα, είπαμε να αναρτήσουμε ένα δίσκο από το ελληνικό darkwave-industrial-dark ambient σχήμα του Glafx. Πιο παλιά, το 2010, είχαμε παρουσιάσει το άλμπουμ των Viridian Green "Ηώ" σε ένα εκτενές κείμενο και για τον Στέφανο 'Γλαύκωψ' Κουκουλομάτη, ένα καλλιτέχνη που τηρεί πιστά το δόγμα του 'do it yourself'. Από το 1988 ο Κουκουλομάτης έχει ασχοληθεί με αρκετά project. Σχεδόν δέκα χρόνια μετά το "Ηώ", στα 1997, κυκλοφορεί το πρώτο LP από την γενική θεματική ενότητα "7 Gates of Punishment" με τίτλο "There Is No Love" και κάτω από το όνομα Glafx (=Γλαύκωψ=κουκουβάγια). Το project αυτό καθώς και τα επόμενα, κυκλοφόρησε μέσω του δικού του label CApp (Contemporary Anticommercial Private Piracy). Πρώτη κυκλοφορία μέσω της CApp λοιπόν, με επιμέλεια του εξωφύλλου από τον ίδιο τον Κουκουλομάτη με νέους συμβολισμούς αλλά και όσον αφορά το περιεχόμενο της μουσικής να έχει πάει ένα βήμα πιο πέρα. Η μουσική λοιπόν είναι σκοτεινή και επιβλητική, με βάθος και μυστήριο, πάντοτε δοσμένη με πρωτοτυπία. Μία από τις καλύτερες στιγμές του δίσκου είναι το "Make Me Yours In Silence", ένα ακαταμάχητο ρυθμικό άσμα με επαναλαμβανόμενη και εντυπωσιακή δουλειά στα πλήκτρα. Είναι φανερό βέβαια πως είναι το καλύτερο μέσα στο δίσκο, όμως στο δεύτερο άκουσμα ανακαλύπτει κανείς και άλλες πτυχές. Επιπλέον, υπάρχουν και άλλες συνθέσεις που ξεχωρίζουν όπως τα "Beloved Not", "There Is No Love - Pure Darkness" και το "Up-Celestial Esctasy" και προσθέτουν αρκετή ατμόσφαιρα στο LP. ENG: Already in a wintry atmosphere, we've decided to upload an album by greek darkwave-industrial-dark ambient band/project Glafx. Back in 2010 we had presented Viridian Green's album "Ηώ" with a lengthy text about Stefanos 'Glafx' Koukoulomatis, a real 'do it yourself' artist mastering various arts. Since 1988 Koukoulomatis has been occupied with more than a few projects, and almost a  decade later he's released the first of his "7 Gates of Punishment" series entitled "There Is No Love". Of course they were issued under the project name Glafx (=owl) and via his own CApp (Contemporary Anticommercial Private Piracy) label. It is the actual first LP on CApp Records and the cover artwork is also made by Koukoulomatis himself, where symbolism and music are taken a bit further, aiding the actualization of the central theme of this LP. The music is dark and imposing with depth and obscurity, but always given out in an original way. One of the greatest moments here is "Make Me Yours In Silence", a compelling and rythmic song full of repetitive and impressive synth work. It becomes apparent that it is the best song in the album, but there's more to discover when listening to it more than once. What's more, there are a few more songs that stand out, such as "Beloved Not", "There Is No Love - Pure Darkness" and "Up-Celestial Esctasy" - all of which attribute a great deal of atmosphere to the LP. Nesfindonimus: Strip Code: 030370 LP, 1992 Elfish Records

Σήμερα επιστρέφουμε σε μια από τις αγαπημένες μας ελληνικές δισκογραφικές, φιλοδοξώντας να φέρουμε στο φως ό,τι διαθέτουμε από τον πλέον δυσεύρετο κατάλογό της. Αν και η παραπάνω εισαγωγή θα μπορούσε να ισχύει για οποιαδήποτε από τις ελληνικές ανεξάρτητες δισκογραφικές εταιρείες (Enigma, Creep, Wipe Out, Happening κτλ), ο λόγος γίνεται για την Elfish Records που αν και πιο πρόσφατη σε σχέση με τις προαναφερόμενες, έχει να επιδείξει εξίσου αρκετό και ποιοτικό μουσικό υλικό.

Έτσι λοιπόν σειρά έχουν οι Nesfindonimus από τις Σέρρες, το project του onemanband John Dark StoneJohn (Γιάννης Πετρακογιάννης), το οποίο είναι οπωδήποτε ένα μείγμα ηλεκτρονικού μουσικού πειραματισμού, μεταξύ minimal synth, dark ambient, αλλά ακόμα και στοιχείων κλασικής και μπαρόκ μουσικής. Το "Strip Code 030370" του 1992 είναι συνολικά ένα D.I.Y. αριστούργημα που ηχογραφήθηκε αρχικά σε στούντιο στις Σέρρες και η επεξεργασία του έγινε στην Αθήνα από τον αξιόλογο και πολυτάλαντο Coti K. (Film Noir, Dada Data, Raw, κ.α.). Το LP αυτό είναι γεμάτο σκοτεινά ηχοτοπία, samples που ταξιδεύουν τον ακροατή μέσα από διαφορετικές εκφάνσεις της ανθρώπινης υπόστασης. Είχαμε ξαναδεί τους Nesfindonimus και στη συλλογή "Random Relations 2" του 1992 με το τραγούδι "Suzanne" που κινείται στο ίδιο ύφος. Όλα τα κομμάτια του δίσκου αυτού είναι είναι αξιόλογα και όσο περισσότερο τα ακούει κανείς θα ξεχωρίζει κάθε φορά ένα διαφορετικό τραγούδι ως αγαπημένο. Όμως... πως να μην εκφράσει κανείς το θαυμασμό του για κομμάτια όπως το "X-Day" (βασισμένο σε θέμα του Klaus Schulze), ή το "Lament" με την επαναλαμβανόμενη μελωδία της οποίας το κρεσέντο καταλήγει σε samples από ψαλμωδίες Ελληνορθόδοξης κηδείας (μακάβριο μεν, έξυπνο δε). Από την άλλη, πιο ηλεκτρονικά κομμάτια όπως το πολλά υποσχόμενο που ανοίγει το δίσκο "Drive my Heart" με τα πανέμορφα αιθέρια γυναικεία φωνητικά, ή το ομώνυμο kinky "Strip Code 030370" ή και ακόμα τα μινιμαλιστικά synth "Dance of Life","All the Stars" και "Password" έχουν μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον. Το "Silent Run" που κλείνει το LP μέσα σε φοβερή ατμόσφαιρα μένει αξέχαστο, δίνοντας την εντύπωση πως δεν άκουσες απλά ένα δίσκο, αλλά ένα soundtrack για το μυστήριο, το πάθος και το μαρτύριο της ανθρώπινης ύπαρξης. Today we return with one of our most favourite Greek Alternative labels, since we have the ambition to bring to light whatever we can out of its hard-to-find catalogue. This could apply to the case of any Greek Alternative label (Enigma, Creep, Wipe Out, etc), here however we mention Elfish Records which may be one of the most recent ones, yet one of rich and quality material.

Thus we bring up a group called Nesfindonimus from Serres (an area in Macedonia, Northern Greece) which is a one-man-band project of John Dark StoneJohn (Giannis Petrakogiannis), musically a mixture of electronic experimentation among minimal synth, dark ambient and even classical and baroque elements. "Strip Code 030370" LP of 1992 is altogether a D.I.Y. masterpiece principally recorded in Serres and eventually been worked in Athens by the remarkable and multitalented Coti K. (Film Noir, Dada Data, Raw, etc). The music of the LP introduces the listener into dark soundscapes and sound samples through various manifestations and aspects of human estate. We had met Nesfindonimus in the "Random Relations 2" Elfish Collection of 1992 with the song "Suzanne" similar to the style of the LP. Each and every song is remarkable, and becoming more with every additional listening and attention. Take our word for it, each time there will have a new favourite one!! How one should not express an admiration about such music: "X-Day" (based on a theme by Klaus Schulze), or "Lament" with the repeated spiral-like theme which climaxes into a sample of chants taken by a Greek-Orthodox funeral (macabre, yet quite clever). Moreover, there are electronically upbeat oriented pieces such as the promising opening song "Drive my Heart" including beautiful ethereal female vocals, or the same-titled kinky "Strip Code 030370". Furthermore, the minimal synth tracks "Dance of Life", "All the Stars" and "Password" are interesting as well. It is not easy to forget the closing track "Silent Run" because its strong atmosphere won't let it be forgotten, as it gives the impression that it is a soundtrack of the mystery, the passion and the agony of human existence. Spinalonga: 13th Relation mini-LP, 1994 Poeta Negra

Μπήκε ο Νοέμβριος και επίσημα...ο χειμώνας λοιπόν. Ας τον καλωσορίσουμε ακούγοντας το δεύτερο πόνημα των Spinalonga με τίτλο "The 13th Relation" που κυκλοφόρησε επίσης από την Poeta Negra εν έτει 1994. Είναι ένας δίσκος μικρότερης διάρκειας απ΄ ότι το "Bid Time Return", αλλά οπωσδήποτε όχι και μικρότερης σπουδαιότητας. Εξ' ίσου το "The 13th..." είναι μια εμπνευσμένη και σκοτεινή παρέα μουσικών κομματιών, μπορούμε να πούμε - το ένα καλύτερο από το άλλο. Από άποψη στυλ κινείται επίσης στο χώρο του dark ambient και dark wave, αποτελείται δε από ιδέες που προϋπήρχαν στο προηγούμενο άλμπουμ και εδώ βρίσκονται ένα βήμα πιο πέρα, αλλά και από μια πιο σύγχρονη χροιά στον ήχο με την χρήση του επαναλαμβανόμενου μοτίβου στα τύμπανα (ή drum-machine;). Άπλετο μυστήριο και σκοτάδι ξεχύνεται καθώς μπαίνει το πρώτο κομμάτι - χωρισμένο σε δύο ενότητες: 1a) "Elevation", 1b) "Phantom Supply". Το πρώτο λειτουργεί ως εισαγωγή στο δεύτερο. Η ατμόσφαιρα συνεχίζεται στο ογκώδες “Despair” με τα ταιριαστά βαθιά φωνητικά, αλλά και στο "Dalmatia". Τα υπόλοιπα 3 κομμάτια κινούνται στον ίδιο σκοτεινό και ομιχλώδη ήχο, ξεχωρίζει το "Culprits" και το ομώνυμο "The 13th Relation" με τα ψιθυριστά και αργόσυρτα φωνητικά. Το "Crusoe" είναι ουσιαστικά η εισαγωγή του "The 13th Relation" και μαζί κλείνουν το δίσκο χρησιμοποιώντας ένα κοινό θέμα, παρόμοιο με τον τρόπο που και τα "Elevation/Phantom Supply" ανοίγουν το δίσκο. Ας σημειωθεί πως όλα τα κομμάτια κρύβουν μια δυναμική που δεν αποκαλύπτεται από το πρώτο άκουσμα Τέλος, μην ξεχνάμε πως το εγχείρημα που λέγεται Spinalonga εδώ αποτελείται από ένα one-man-band άτομο με το όνομα Danny Drablow, όπως σημειώνεται στο οπισθόφυλλο.

Η Spinalonga δεν έχει δείξει όλες τις πτυχές και τα μυστικά της, μένει να ανακαλύψουμε πολλά ακόμα. Καλή ακρόαση.

It's already November… and officially winter, let us welcome this winter by listening to the second album by Spinalonga, entitled "The 13th Relation" also released by Poeta Negra Records in 1994. Compared to their first LP, "Bid Time Return" the "The 13th Relation" is shorter in length, but not shorter in quality. Just like their previous release, this mini-LP is an inspired and dark compilation of songs, each one better than the other along the way. Speaking of Style it is a dark ambient/dark wave mini-LP, full of ideas that seemed to exist dormant in the first LP and/or evolved here for the first time, forcing one step beyond into an up-to-date enrichment of sound, such is for example the repeated drum motif (or drum machine?). There's a pouring dark and mysterious atmosphere in their music even from the beginning of this record with the 2-unit first song: 1a) "Elevation" and 1b) "Phantom Supply". Same atmosphere continues even more massively on “Despair” with equally matching deep vocals. "Dalmatia" draws along in the same vein, too. The rest of the songs are in the same obscure and distinctive dark sound, both "Culprits" and "The 13th Relation" stand out, with "Crusoe" being the actual intro for the homonymous track. This couplet of songs closes the album more or less in the way "Elevation/Phantom Supply" open the album. Let’s note here that all the songs will revealed themselves progressively, but not too soon. Last, but not least that Danny Drablow is credited as the one-man-band, creator and composer of all songs, as you can see in the back cover notes.

Spinalonga has not shown all its aspects and secrets yet, lot more is expected along the way. Have a good listening to this one!!!

Spinalonga: Bid Time Return, 1990, Poeta Negra Records

Σήμερα ανεβαίνει ένας σπανιότατος, αλλά και καθόλου καλοκαιρινός δίσκος... Είναι ένας δίσκος που είτε τον μισείς ή τον αγαπάς,για να συντροφεύει τα σκοτάδια σου, και για να σε κάνει να αποφεύγεις τα σκοτεινά σοκκάκια. Στην πραγματικότητα είναι όπως το πάρει κανείς, γιατί το σκοτάδι της ψυχής και της ανθρώπινης ύπαρξης πολύ δύσκολα παίρνει μορφή, πολύ δύσκολα να το αντιπροσωπεύσει ένας ήχος... ή μια μουσική. Πάντως πιστεύουμε πως το μουσικό σχήμα της σημερινής ανάρτησης τα καταφέρνει κάπως.

Πρόκειται για τους Spinalonga, ένα συγκρότημα μυστήριο, απαρτίζεται από ένα, από δύο, είναι κανονική μπάντα; Είναι μόνο αυτός ο τύπος ο Daniel Drablow ή κι άλλος ένας ο Daliweb? Ποιός ξέρει; Πρόκειται πάντως για ένα από τα πιο μυστήρια σχήματα της Ελληνικής αντ σκηνής που παίζουν σκοτεινό και ατμοσφαιρικό ambient, με πολλά darkwave στοιχεία. Ουσιαστικά από τα οκτώ κομμάτια του δίσκου, μόνο τα δύο έχουν στίχους, και ειναι εξόχως επιβλητικά και μεγάλα σε διάρκεια (Elaine, Tide). Το Bid Time Return είναι ουσιαστικά τοπρώτο τους άλμπουμ. Οι Spinalonga πήραν το όνομά τους από ένα νησί που βρίσκεταιστα ανατολικά ανοιχτά της Κρήτης κοντά στην πασίγνωστη Ελούντα. Το νησάκι αυτό έχει μεγάλη ιστορία, είναι γεμάτη πολέμους, κατακτήσεις, και Ενετικά κάστρα, δηλάδή άλλαξε πολλές φορές χέρια στην ιστορία του, αλλά και ονομασία. Στα αρχαία χρόνια λεγόταν Καλυδώνα, στα νεότερα λέγεται πια Spinalonga - ονομασία Ενετική που σημαίνει "Μακρύ Αγκάθι". Εκεί λοιπόν υπήρξε μία από τις τελευταίες κοινότητες λεπρών στην Ευρώπη κατά τα χρόνια 1903-1957. Λέγεται πως οι λεπροί έμπαιναν στο νησί από την λεγόμενη "Πύλη του Δάντη". Πραγματικά επιβλητικό!

Today's post is a rare to find, but not at all a summertime mood LP... It's a record that you either hate or love, to join you either way in your darkness, and make you avoid dark streets. It is really very hard to represent the darkness of the soul and human existence with sound. Yet, we believe that this group achieves it up to a certain point.

It is about Spinalonga, a mysterious group. Is one or two people part of this group? Who knows? Is it only this fellow Daniel Drablow or another one called Daliweb? However they are a Greek band associated with the underground scene and they play dark atmospheric ambientmusic with lots of darkwave treats. Technically out of the eight tracks of this LP, only two of them have lyrics, and they are exquisite, imposing and long (Elaine, Tide). "Bid Time Return" LP is their first album (on Poeta Negra Records). Their curious name has been borrowed by an island east of Crete near the famous Elouda. This little island has a long story of wars, conquests, Venetian castles that now seem totally haunted. Changed conquerors and names too, as in theancient times it was called Kalidon, the Venetians named it Spinalonga (means long thorn in Latin). The most recent shocking fact aboutSpinalonga is that it has been one of the last leper colonies in Europe in the years 1903-1957. It is said that the lepers used to enter thisisland from a gate called "Dante's Gate". Really imposing!!! How cant this place be not haunted at all?? So much suffering and so much pain.
