The Spectors: Main Tracks cdr, 1998 Self-Released

Με καθυστερημένες ευχές για τη νέα χρονιά, ξεκινάμε το 2017 με μια ξεχωριστή ανάρτηση. Έχουμε μια ελληνική γκαραζο-ψυχεδελική μπάντα τους Spectors που κατάγονται από το Αμύνταιο στον βόρειο νομό της Φλώρινας. Πρόκειται για μια ανάρτηση που μας πήρε αρκετό χρόνο, αλλά είναι και μια ευκαιρία για εμάς να 'μοιραστούμε' το cdr "Main Tracks" των Spectors μαζί σας.
Εξίσου σημαντικό είναι το γεγονός πως δεν ήταν εύκολο να εντοπίσουμε πληροφορίες για τους Spectors, οπότε το μεγαλύτερο μέρος τους προέρχεται από μια σύντομη βιογραφία στο εξώφυλλο του cdr, αλλά και από πληροφορίες που μας παρείχε ο φίλτατος blogger 'giusurum', τον οποίο και ευχαριστούμε θερμά.
Ας ξεκινήσουμε με τα μέλη της μπάντας όπως αναφέρεται στο εξώφυλλο του cdr: Κώστας Χατζής (φωνητικά και κιθάρα), Κώστας Μίχος (μπάσσο), Θεόδωρος Φιλίππου (πλήκτρα και σαξόφωνο), Χρήστος Χατζηιωάννου (φωνητικά) και Κωστής Χατζηιωάννου (κιθάρα και μπάσσο). Επιπλέον, χρησιμοποιήθηκε drum machine σε όλα τα κομμάτια. Αναφέρεται και ένας ντράμερ ονόματι Νίκος Νικολαΐδης από τα πρώτα μέλη της μπάντας αλλά δεν συμμετέχει σε κανένα τραγούδι του "Main Tracks". Αργότερα, στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του '90 ο Κώστας Χατζής δημιούργησε το garage σχήμα Unknown Passage, ενώ το 2008 πριν πεθάνει έκανε το project Dead Tymes .
Εκτός από το πασίγνωστο κομμάτι "Photogrey" που βρίσκεται στην συλλογή "Το Μαγικό Βοτάνι" της Wipe-Out, οι Spectors δεν είχαν καμία ολοκληρωμένη κυκλοφορία σε βινύλιο. Είχαν όμως κυκλοφορήσει υλικό τους σε κασέτες, όπως π.χ. τη ζωντανή ηχογράφηση του 1985 "Οι Spectors ζωντανά στο Ξινό Νερό", ένδειξη πως η μπάντα ήταν αρκετά δραστήρια κυρίως στην Βόρεια Ελλάδα. Το 1987 κυκλοφόρησαν επίσης σε κασέτα τη στουντιακή ηχογράφηση "Sorry For You".
Όσον αφορά το cdr "Main Tracks" φαίνεται να αποτελεί την ολοκληρωμένη συλλογή τραγουδιών και δείχνει την ικανότητά τους να φτιάχνουν εκπληκτική μουσική σε garage-psychedelic κατεύθυνση. Εδώ όλα τα τραγούδια έχουν γραφτεί από τους Spectors και ηχογραφήθηκαν στο σπίτι του Θόδωρου Φιλίππου στο χρονικό διάστημα από το 1986 έως το 1993. Θα ακούσετε αρκετά ενδιαφέροντα τραγούδια σε ελληνικό και αγγλικό στίχο, μεταξύ αυτών και την εκπληκτική μελοποίηση του ποίηματος του E.A. Poe "The Raven", αλλά και μια διαφορετική εκτέλεση του "Photogrey".

ENG: Delayed happy new year wishes to everybody and we're kicking off 2017 with a special treat for you. Here's the greek garage/psychedelic band Spectors that originated from the city of Amyntaio in the northern prefecture of Florina. Note that this post has been a long time waiting one and an opportunity for us to share the "Main Tracks" cdr with you.
It's equally important to note that it wasn't easy to find much info about the Spectors, so all the feedback we post comes from a short biography note on the cdr cover as well as some info provided by fellow blogger 'giusurum' whom we wholeheartedly thank.
To begin with, the Spectors members according to the cdr info were Costas Hatzis (vocals, guitar), Costas Michos (bass guitar), Theodoros Filippou (keyboards, saxophone), Christos Hatziioannou (vocals) and Costis Hatziioannou (guitar, bass guitar). Additionally a drum machine was used in all the songs. A drummer by the name Nikos Nikolaides is mentioned as one of the early members but isn't present in any of the songs. It must've been late 90s when Costas Hatzis created the garage band Unknown Passage and in 2008, before he died, he had another project called Dead Tymes.
Apart from their song "Photogrey" that is featured in Wipe-Out's "Magico Votani" [Magic Herb] the band didn't have any other proper vinyl releases. They did have some tapes released though, for instance there's a live tape recorded in 1985 entitled "The Spectors live In Ksino Nero" and a studio recorded tape entitled "Sorry For You" in 1987.
As far as the "Main Tracks" cdr is concerned, it seems to cover the band's entire studio recording history and exhibits their skill at building songs in a unique style of garage-psychedelic orientation. All the songs were composed by the Spectors and were recorded in Theodoros Filippou's house from 1986 to 1993. So get ready to listen to some very interesting pieces both in Greek and English lyrics, among them an amazing version of  E.A. Poe's "The Raven" and a different version of "Photogrey". If you don't know the Spectors, this is the opportunity to find out about them. Have a good listening to "Main Tracks" and enjoy.

Jack Of All Trades: Just Before, Unfair Loss LP, 1995 Ikaros Music

Είναι ήδη Δεκέμβρης και εμείς σας παρουσιάζουμε το ολοκληρωμένο άλμπουμ των εκπληκτικών Jack of All Trades με τίτλο "Just Before Unfair Loss" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1995 από την Ikaros Music. Αν θυμάστε, η πρώτη ανάρτηση της χρονιάς αφορούσε πάλι τους Jack of All Trades και το ομώνυμο μίνι άλμπουμ.
Από μουσικής άποψης το LP είναι στο ίδιο ύφος με το μίνι άλμπουμ που προηγήθηκε, δηλαδή μιλάμε για απολαυστικές συνθέσεις που συνοδεύονται από εξίσου όμορφα αιθέρια φωνητικά. Επιπλέον, ο δίσκος περιέχει και μια διασκευή στο "Waiting for My Man" των Velvet Underground ξαθώς και στο "Another Time" των Pearls Before Swine.
Εδώ πρέπει να πούμε πως ο δίσκος αφιερώνεται στον Παναγιώτη Κυρίτση, κιθαρίστα του συγκροτήματος ο οποίος πέθανε προτού δει την κυκλοφορία αυτού του δίσκου. Συνέπεια αυτού αποτελεί το οτι κανένα από τα τραγούδια δεν έχει ηχογραφηθεί μετά το 1993. Απολαύστε λοιπόν αυτό το καταπληκτικό νεοψυχεδελικό δημιούργημα.

ENG: December is here and so are we, presenting the full length LP of the astonishing Greek band Jack of All Trades, entitled "Just Before Unfair Loss" released through Ikaros Music in 1995. If you recall, the very first post of 2015 was about their eponymous mini LP where we included a few things about the band as well.
In terms of music, the LP is in the same vein and style of it's predecessor; a few enjoyable compositions accompanied with equally beautiful ethereal vocals. What's more, it includes two well known covers; Velvet Underground's "Waiting for My Man" and Pearls Before Swine's "Another Time".
Here is the place to mention that the album is dedicated to Panagiotis Kyritsis, the guitarist of the band who died before seeing this LP released. As a consequence, none of the songs comprising this album has been recorded later than 1993. Enjoy listening to this great new-psychedelic opus!

Jack of All Trades: Jack of All Trades m-LP, 1990 Pegasus Records

Ήρθε και η νέα χρονιά και σας ευχόμαστε να είναι ευτυχισμένη και δημιουργική. Αργήσαμε κάπως για την πρώτη ανάρτηση, αλλά είναι έτοιμη! Με την ευκαιρία της κυκλοφορίας του άλμπουμ "Around and Away" από τους Jack of All Trades θυμηθήκαμε πως είχαμε ξεχάσει εντελώς αυτό το Αθηναϊκό σχήμα.
Φτιάχτηκαν στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 80 και έμειναν ενεργοί για περίπου μια δεκαετία. Οι κυκλοφορίες τους ήταν κάπως σπάνιες και απαριθμούν δύο, το ομώνυμο μίνι άλμπουμ του 1990 και το κανονικό άλμπουμ "Just Before Unfair Loss" του 1995 (από την θρυλική δισκογραφική Pegasus Records και την Ikaros Music αντίστοιχα). Οι Jack of All Trades δημιούργησαν σπουδαία μουσική εξερευνώντας την ψυχεδελική ροκ σε βάθος και άφησαν εξαιρετικά τραγούδια στις επόμενες γενιές. Τα μέλη του συγκροτήματος ήταν οι Βίκυ Βαρύτη (φωνητικά), Νίκος Βαρύτης (φωνητικά-ηλεκτρική και ακουστική κιθάρα), Παναγιώτης Κυρίτσης (ηλεκτρική κιθάρα) και Ηλίας Πορτοκαλάκης (τύμπανα). Πληροφορίες λένε πως το συγκρότημα αναγκάστηκε να διαλυθεί μετά από το θάνατο του κιθαρίστα Παναγιώτη Κυρίτση σε αυτοκινητιστικό δυστύχημα.
Δύο λόγια για τη σημερινή ανάρτηση. Το μίνι άλμπουμ "Jack of All Trades" περιέχει τέσσερα εκπληκτικά τραγούδια, τα "Freedom", "Confusion", "Part Time Rebel" και "We Are the World". Καλά να περάσετε.

ENG: Here's the new year 2015, we wish you all a happy and creative one. We're somewhat late for the first post, but here it is. Grabbing the opportunity of the release of Jack of All Trades' "Around and Away", an album which contains only previously unreleased material, we've come to realise that we'd totally forgotten all about this great band from Athens, Greece. They were formed in the mid-80s and lasted for a decade or so. Their releases were scarce; a same titled mini-LP in 1990 and a full LP entitled "Just Before Unfair Loss" in 1995, through the legendary Pegasus Records and Ikaros Music respectively. Apparently, they created great music and explored the psychedelic rock style in depth and delivered some excellent songs to later generations. Jack of All Trades comprised Vicky Varitis on female vocals, Nick Varitis on male vocals, electric & acoustic guitar, Panagiotis Kiritsis on electric guitar and Ilias Portokalakis on drums. The info around the internet says they had to disband because of the unexpected death of their guitarist Panagiotis Kiritsis in a car accident.
A couple lines for today's upload. Their first release, the "Jack of All Trades" mini-LP contains four outstanding songs, "Freedom", "Confusion", "Part Time Rebel" and "We Are the World". Have Fun!

The Astronauts: The Seedy Side of The Astronauts mLP, 1987 All The Madmen

Να ένα ασυνήθιστο άκουσμα για το κλείσιμο του 2014. Οι Astronauts ανήκουν σε εκείνα τα συγκροτήματα που είτε σου αρέσουν ή όχι. Υπάρχουν ήδη από το 1977, την απαρχή του Βρετανικού punk, και δημιουργήθηκαν από τον Mark Astronaut (το αληθινό του όνομα είναι Mark Wilkins) στη γενέτειρά του, την πόλη Welwyn Garden City. Το συγκρότημα είχε ισχυρούς δεσμούς με τους Zounds και τους Mob και εμφανίστηκαν πολλές φορές μαζί. Επίσης, ήταν πολιτικοί ενεργά με προφανώς αριστερή ταυτότητα, μάλιστα έχουν συμμετάσχει σε αρκετά free αντιφασιστικά-αντιρατσιστικά φεστιβάλ. Όσον αφορά το μουσικό ύφος, δεν είναι αμιγώς punk/post punk, αλλά εμπεριέχει αρκετά στοιχεία folk. Κάποιοι οπαδοί τους, τούς αποκαλούν "hippie anarcho-punk", πράγμα που επίσης ισχύει. Ακόμα κι έτσι, ο ήχος τους δεν έπαψε να εξελίσσεται συνεχώς με κάθε νέο άλμπουμ. Έτσι, αποφασίσαμε να σας παρουσιάσουμε την τέταρτη κυκλοφορία τους, το mini LP με τον τίτλο "The Seedy Side of The Astronauts" από το 1987 που βγήκε από την ανεξάρτητη δισκογραφική All The Madmen.
Η μουσική στο "The Seedy Side of..." λίγο-πολύ συμφωνεί με τον τίτλο του, είναι δηλαδή η ψυχεδελική άποψη ενός σχήματος που ποτέ δεν έμελλε να συμβιβαστεί. Στα "Fiona" και "Seedy Side of Paul" είναι έντονα εμφανείς οι ψυχεδελικές αποχρώσεις, ενώ είναι λιγότερο φανερές στο πιασάρικο "Political" το οποίο είναι τραγούδι διαμαρτυρίας καθώς και στο "Indisputable Fact". Η δεύτερη πλευρά αποτελείται μόνο από το "Semaphore Men" χωρισμένο σε δύο μέρη, ένα ωραίο τραγούδι στο οποίο επίσης ενυπάρχουν ψυχεδελικοί τόνοι - περισσότερο δε στο πρώτο μέρος. Οπωσδήποτε διαβάστε το κείμενο του Mark Astronaut σχετικά με το "The Seedy Side of...". Ελπίζουμε πως θα το απολαύσετε αρκετά την ακρόαση του. Τέλος, σας ευχόμαστε ένα ευτυχισμένο 2015.

ENG: Here's an irregular treat for the end of 2014. The Astronauts are one of those bands that you either like or dislike. They are as old as British punk, created in 1977 by Mark Astronaut (real name Mark Wilkins) in his hometown, Welwyn Garden City. The band had strong bonds with The Zounds and The Mob and often toured together. Also, the Astronauts were politically active with an apparent left wing attitude and played in numerous free anti-fascist festivals. Their style isn't all that punk or post punk, but had a rather folk-ish style altogether. Some fans call their style "hippie anarcho-punk" which applies also. Nevertheless, their sound evolved even further with every album they released. Out of an extended discography we chose to present you their fourth release, a mini LP entitled "The Seedy Side of The Astronauts" issued in 1987 through All The Madmen label.
"The Seedy Side of The Astronauts" mLP is more or less what its title implies, a more psychedelic outlook of a band that was never meant to conform. This psychedelic hue is more evident in songs like "Fiona" and "Seedy Side of Paul", but less evident in "Political" which is a catchy protest song and "Indisputable Fact". The second side of the album is taken by the amazing two-part "Semaphore Men" which also contains a few experimental psychedelic clolours - at least the first part. Must read Mark Astronaut's notes regarding this release. We hope you enjoy listening to the "Seedy Side of the Astronauts". We wish you a happy new year 2015.

The Venus Fly Trap: Pandora's Box 1991, Danceteria Records

Για τον Alex Novak είχαμε μιλήσει παλιότερα όταν είχαμε παρουσιάσει το e.p. "Montezuma" των The Tempest. Είχαμε και τότε αναφερθεί στην ανήσυχη προσωπικότητα αυτού του ξεχωριστού μουσικού, ο οποίος αφού είχε δουλέψει κατά το παρελθόν με αρκετά new wave/post punk σχήματα (Religious Overdose, The Tempest, Attrition), κατέληξε φτιάχνοντας τους Venus Fly Trap, ένα μουσικό "όχημα" με σαφώς ανοιχτόμυαλη κατεύθυνση σε alternative rock ιδιώματα χωρίς όμως να αμελεί τις σκοτεινές post punk  ηχητικές καταβολές. Κοντολογίς, το αποτέλεσμα είναι πιο κοντά στο gothic rock με αρκετές ενέσεις φρέσκου ήχου και επαρκή ψυχεδελικά και progressive rock ψήγματα. Είναι αλήθεια βέβαια, και αυτό θα το διαπιστώσετε μόνοι σας, πως οι Venus Fly Trap είναι ένα συγκρότημα που δεν μπορείς να το κατατάξεις εύκολα σε κάποιο είδος. Το άλμπουμ που ανεβάζουμε σήμερα είναι το τρίτο τους κατά σειρά με τίτλο "Pandora's Box" και κυκλοφόρησε από την Danceteria Records το 1991. Σχετικά με την κυκλοφορία του δίσκου ο Alex Novak είχε δώσει μια ενδιαφέρουσα συνέντευξη στο περιοδικό Spiral όπου μεταξύ των άλλων μιλάει και για το παρελθόν. Το "Pandora's Box" είναι ένα καλοφτιαγμένο άλμπουμ κυρίως λόγω της ποικιλίας των επιρροών - όπως προαναφέραμε, αλλά και γιατί οι συνθέσεις δείχνουν  την ωριμότητα του Novak ως συνθέτη και μουσικού.

Ο μύθος λέει πως κάποτε το "Κουτί της Πανδώρας" άνοιξε για να ελευθερώσει τα καλά και τα κακά του κόσμου. Ας δώσουμε την προσοχή μας στα καλά που περιέχει η πολλά υποσχόμενη κυκλοφορία. Ήδη από το εισαγωγικό gothic rock "Shadow Ministry", ένα επιβλητικά ενορχηστρωμένο κομμάτι, όπως άλλωστε και το εξίσου μεγαλόπρεπο "Monument to the Sublime" γίνεται ξεκάθαρο πως πρόκειται για ένα ωραίο άλμπουμ. Προσέξτε πως κλείνει το κομμάτι με το θέμα του "Persuaders" (συνθ. John Barry) από το ομώνυμο σήριαλ. Φρέσκος ήχος με επίσης ψυχεδελικές πινελιές και στα "World Turned Upside Down", "Jewel Encrusted Hands". Το ατμοσφαιρικό space rock "Ruby Revisited" μετράει ως μία από τις καλύτερες στιγμές του δίσκου, μουσική που πάει πιο μακριά από το post punk στυλ των Tempest.. Σε σκοτεινά ψυχεδελικά τεχνάσματα επικεντρώνεται και το "Side Winder" και αμέσως στη συνέχεια και το πικρόγλυκο "Deathwatch a Beatle" Επίσης, ένα από τα καλύτερα είναι και το "Achilles Heel" με τον Ορφικό Ύμνο (?!?) στην εισαγωγή. Από κει και μετά το κομμάτι εξελισσεται σε ένα progressive-space rock πρότυπο εφορμώντας σε πλήθος από λαβυρινθώδεις μελωδίες και εναλλαγές. Κλείνοντας, συνειδητοποιούμε πως όλη η ενέργεια που εκλύεται αρχής γενομένης από το "Shadow Ministry" ως το "Achilles' Heel" φαίνεται πως καταλαγιάζει στο πιάνο του "Shedding Another Skin" δίνοντας τέλος σε ένα αληθινά μεγαλοπρεπή δίσκο. ENG: We firstly mentioned Alex Novak when we presented The Tempest's "Montezuma" e.p. back in August 2011. We also referred to his restless personality, that of a musician/composer who had previously worked with several new wave/post punk groups such as Religious Overdose, The Tempest, Attrition, and redounded creating The Venus Fly Trap which was a music formation with open-minded likeness for the alternative rock sound, however not without the moodiness of post punk. In short, the outcome of The Venus Fly Trap was closer to the gothic rock idiom with a few "injections" of modern sound as well as psychedelic and progressive rock music elements. It is true and you are about to see for yourselves that VTF are hard to be categorized. Today's post is about the third LP entitled "Pandora's Box" released on Danceteria in 1991. Overall, "Pandora's Box" is a well-crafted LP mainly due to the diversity of influences combined with Novak's ability to build (more) mature compositions. Novak was interviewed by Spiral Magazine regarding the release of "Pandora's Box" and among all he refers to his work prior to VTF.
With reference to the myth the Pandora's Box if opened all good and evil of this world is to be released, the VTF album sets our attention only to the good stuff...starting with the gothic rock masterpiece "Shadow Ministry", an impressive arrangement as well as the equally great "Monument to the Sublime" is. Note how the latter ends blending with the beautiful tune of John Barry's "The Persuaders", the theme from the same-titled 70's serial. There's also fresh sound with psychedelic hues in both, "World Turned Upside Down"and "Jewel Encrusted Hands". "Ruby Revisited" is an atmospheric space rock masterpiece, one of this album's greatest, nevertheless far from the post punk style of The Tempest. "Side Winder" focuses on certain psychedelic treatments along with the bittersweet "Deathwatch a Beatle". "Achilles' Heel" is again one of the greatest songs to appear in "Pandora's Box". The recitation of an Orphic Hymn (?!?) introduces what primarily appears to be a space-progressive rock anthem and eventually transforms in a complex and elaborative epic, apparently attuned with the style of the album. In the end, all this built-up energy settles down with the piano of "Shedding Another Skin" and closing another great album. We hope you like it

The Melting Ashes: Green Fuzz 1987, 1991, Wipe Out Records

Σήμερα έχουμε κάτι το διαφορετικό -ηχητικά- και το οποίο έρχεται επίσης από τα σκοτεινά χρόνια της δεκαετίας του 80 και θα ήταν κρίμα ένα τέτοιο διαμάντι να μείνει στην αφάνεια του Χρόνου.

Πρόκειται για τους Melting Ashes, μια ανεξάρτητη garage-psychedelic r'n'r μπάντα που έδρασε μεταξύ 1986-1990. Κυκλοφόρησε κάποια demo, έκανε αρκετά live, συμμετείχε στις συλλογές της Wipe Out "12 Raw Greek Bands" (1988) και "Double Shot" (1991) με το κομμάτι "The Midnight Bar" (και στις δύο). Τελικά, μετά τη διάλυση του συγκροτήματος το 1991, κυκλοφόρησε από την Wipe Out και το LP (ηχογραφημένο σε 4-κάναλο από το 1988) με τίτλο"Green Fuzz 1987", αυτό δηλαδή που σήμερα σας παρουσιάζουμε. Σύμφωνα και με το σημείωμα (στο οπισθόφυλλο) του Θοδωρή "The Whip" Κρίθαρη, φίλου, μάνατζερ των Melting Ashes (και συνιδρυτή της Wipe Out), ο οποίος έχει χρησιμοποιήσει αρκετά ποιητική γλώσσα για να περιγράψει και να εξιστορήσει την εμπειρία του με το συγκρότημα, λέει πως "πρόκειται για πηγαίο συναισθηματικό rock 'n' roll". Ο ήχος του συγκροτήματος χαρακτηρίζεται από την καθαρόαιμη r'n'r ραχοκοκκαλιά και την ήπια ψυχεδελική παρουσία, επιτρέποντας να συνυπάρχουν δύναμη και ηρεμία μαζί. Today's post is slightly different - sound wise - and it comes from Greece's past: the 'dark' years of the 80's. It’d be a pity if we left this jewel get lost in time. We are talking about Melting Ashes, an independent garage-psychedelic r'n'r group that was active among 1986-1990. They self-released some demos, had plenty live shows, participated in Wipe Out's compilations with the song "The Midnight Bar"

in "12 Raw Greek Bands" (1988) and in "Double Shot" (1991) too. Finally the LP "Green Fuzz 1987" came out in 1991 after the group disbanded and it costituted of ten songsrecorded in a 4-channel, back in 1988. According to the back cover poetic note written by the group's manager and friend (and co-creator of Wipe Out Records) Thodoris "the whip' Kritharis explaining the Melting Ashes experience as a "rock 'n' roll sound-emotional source". Indeed their sound consists of a raw rock n roll backbone and a mild psychedelic presence, which allows power and serenity at the same time.
