Neo Arya: Entre L'Amour Et La Haine mLP, 1984 Play It Again Sam

Η αναζήτηση πληροφοριών για αυτή την ανάρτηση του Βελγικού post punk σχήματος Neo Arya αποδείχθηκε σχετικά άκαρπη, εκτός από ελάχιστα δεδομένα με τα οποία θα προσπαθήσουμε να ολοκληρώσουμε την εικόνα του συγκροτήματος.
Προφανώς ο κιθαρίστας Eric Delcroix πρώην μέλος του επίσης Βελγικού punk σχήματος Spermicide σχημάτισε τους Neo Arya μαζί με τους Chris Altree στο μπάσσο και τον Paul Hamesse στα τύμπανα. Μοναδική τους κυκλοφορία ήταν το μίνι άλμπουμ "Entre L'Amour Et La Haine" μέσω της θρυλικής 'Play It Again Sam' το 1984 και αποτελεί μία από τις πρώτες κυκλοφορίες της δισκογραφικής.  Κάτι παράξενο που κάνει τον δίσκο να ξεχωρίζει είναι πως η πρώτη πλευρά παίζει στις 45 στροφές και περιέχει τα δύο πρώτα κομμάτια, η δεύτερη πλευρά παίζει στις 33 στροφές και περιέχει τα υπόλοιπα πέντε.
Παρ' όλα αυτά ο δίσκος περιέχει κλασικά post punk κομμάτια, που ενίοτε μοιάζουν κάπως πρόχειρα. Το παίξιμο του μπάσσου είναι χαρακτηριστικό και δικαίως αποτελεί τη ραχοκοκκαλιά κάθε κομματιού με την κιθάρα να είναι σε δεύτερη μοίρα.
Αν και οι Neo Arya ήταν ένα βραχύβιο σχήμα, τα μέλη του πρόσφεραν ακόμη περισσότερα στην Βελγική punk και rock σκηνή. Την επόμενη χρονιά της κυκλοφορίας του "Entre L'Amour Et La Haine", οι Chris Altree και Paul Hamesse προχώρησαν στη δημιουργία των Revenge (είχαμε κάνει σχετική ανάρτηση) και αργότερα το 1989 τους Chainsaws.

ENG: Searching for info on Belgian punk rock/post punk band Neo Arya, there wasn't much to find other than scattered fragments of data which we'll try to put together.
Apparently, it was guitarist Eric Delcroix, a former member of Belgian punk band Spermicide who formed Neo Arya with Chris Altree on bass and Paul Hamesse on drums. They released only the mini album "Entre L'Amour Et La Haine" through the legendary 'Play It Again Sam' label in 1984. In fact it was one of the first releases of the label. Similarly, the band must've been creative if you consider that the mini LP has two songs on the first side playing at 45 rpm and five songs on the second side playing at 33 rpm. That's an oddity, isn't it?
Nevertheless, the album contains a few classic post punk songs that are enjoyable, even though they sound somewhat rudimentary. The bass line is being played in a distinct way while the guitar is a runner up.
Despite Neo Arya having a short life they were an important part of the Belgian punk and rock scene. A year after the release of "Entre L'Amour Et La Haine", Chris Altree and Paul Hamesse went on to form Revenge (remember them from an earlier post?) and The Chainsaws in 1989.

Sativa Luv Box: The Bad Sleep Well LP 1989, Splat-Co Records

Χωρίς την ακούραστη συνεισφορά του Unspeakable, αυτό το blog θα ήταν σίγουρα φτωχότερο. Ένα από πιο πρόσφατα που μάς έστειλε ήταν το άλμπουμ "Bad Sleep Well" του 1989 από τους Sativa Luv Box. Αυτό το Καλιφορνέζικο σχήμα με το παράξενο όνομα δημιουργήθηκε από τον μουσικό (τραγουδιστή και κιθαρίστα) Patrick Mata μετά την διάλυση των Kommunity FK. Λέγεται πως Sativa ήταν και το όνομα της κοπέλας του Mata εκείνο τον καιρό. Οι Sativa Luv Box συχνά χαρακτηρίζονται ως acid-punk, κατά κάποιο τρόπο ψυχεδελικό punk σχήμα. Πράγματι, η μουσική τους έχει αναφορές σε punk, psychedelic rock, hard rock, ακόμα και glam rock γενικά της δεκαετίας του '70.

Ας πούμε λοιπόν ότι υπάρχει κάτι από όλα: ένα μείγμα από το παλιό και το καινούργιο, από όπου αναδύεται μια αίσθηση οικειότητας όσον αφορά τον ήχο τους συνολικά. Φυσικά υπάρχει μεγάλη απόκλιση από ο,τιδήποτε θα μπορούσε να θυμίζει τους Kommunity FK, καθώς οι S.L.B. δεν ακούγονται σαν καμία άλλη σύγχρονή τους μπάντα. Όντες ανοιχτόμυαλοι δεν έμειναν προσηλωμένοι σε κάποιο συγκεκριμένο ύφος, πράγμα που μας κάνει να τους αποδίδουμε σεβασμό. Ακούγοντας το άλμπουμ ίσως να τα αναρωτιέστε και εσείς αυτά. Πιστεύουμε πως πρέπει να τους ακούσετε χαλαρά και να μην τους παρεξηγήσετε. Είναι ενα παράξενο άλμπουμ που οπωσδήποτε θα απολαύσετε.

ENG: If it wasn't for The Unspeakable's tireless supply, the blog wouldn't have as much to offer. One of the vinyl-rips he's sent us recently, is Sativa Luv Box's 1989 LP entitled "Bad Sleep Well". The peculiar named California band was created in Los Angeles, U.S., by the vocalist/guitarist Patrick Mata after the demise of Kommunity FK. Rumor has it that Sativa was the name of Mata's girlfriend at that time. Sativa Luvbox are often portrayed as an acid-punk group, sort of a psychedelic act. In fact, their music style is based on punk, psychedelic rock, hard rock, glam rock and generally 70's rock music references.  Similarly, there's some of everything; a mixture of the old and the new, but altogether there's a deep sense of familiarity with their sound. They are much diverse than Kommunity FK, and it seems that Patrick Mata and his gang were trying hard not to sound like any other contemporary act. They spread out to a wide range of styles without any solid dedication to genres; that's why we respect them. Upon listening to "Bad Sleep Well" you may find yourselves pondering all that. We think you should just take it easy and don't get them wrong. It's an odd one that you'll definitely enjoy.

The Astronauts: The Seedy Side of The Astronauts mLP, 1987 All The Madmen

Να ένα ασυνήθιστο άκουσμα για το κλείσιμο του 2014. Οι Astronauts ανήκουν σε εκείνα τα συγκροτήματα που είτε σου αρέσουν ή όχι. Υπάρχουν ήδη από το 1977, την απαρχή του Βρετανικού punk, και δημιουργήθηκαν από τον Mark Astronaut (το αληθινό του όνομα είναι Mark Wilkins) στη γενέτειρά του, την πόλη Welwyn Garden City. Το συγκρότημα είχε ισχυρούς δεσμούς με τους Zounds και τους Mob και εμφανίστηκαν πολλές φορές μαζί. Επίσης, ήταν πολιτικοί ενεργά με προφανώς αριστερή ταυτότητα, μάλιστα έχουν συμμετάσχει σε αρκετά free αντιφασιστικά-αντιρατσιστικά φεστιβάλ. Όσον αφορά το μουσικό ύφος, δεν είναι αμιγώς punk/post punk, αλλά εμπεριέχει αρκετά στοιχεία folk. Κάποιοι οπαδοί τους, τούς αποκαλούν "hippie anarcho-punk", πράγμα που επίσης ισχύει. Ακόμα κι έτσι, ο ήχος τους δεν έπαψε να εξελίσσεται συνεχώς με κάθε νέο άλμπουμ. Έτσι, αποφασίσαμε να σας παρουσιάσουμε την τέταρτη κυκλοφορία τους, το mini LP με τον τίτλο "The Seedy Side of The Astronauts" από το 1987 που βγήκε από την ανεξάρτητη δισκογραφική All The Madmen.
Η μουσική στο "The Seedy Side of..." λίγο-πολύ συμφωνεί με τον τίτλο του, είναι δηλαδή η ψυχεδελική άποψη ενός σχήματος που ποτέ δεν έμελλε να συμβιβαστεί. Στα "Fiona" και "Seedy Side of Paul" είναι έντονα εμφανείς οι ψυχεδελικές αποχρώσεις, ενώ είναι λιγότερο φανερές στο πιασάρικο "Political" το οποίο είναι τραγούδι διαμαρτυρίας καθώς και στο "Indisputable Fact". Η δεύτερη πλευρά αποτελείται μόνο από το "Semaphore Men" χωρισμένο σε δύο μέρη, ένα ωραίο τραγούδι στο οποίο επίσης ενυπάρχουν ψυχεδελικοί τόνοι - περισσότερο δε στο πρώτο μέρος. ENG: Here's an irregular treat for the end of 2014. The Astronauts are one of those bands that you either like or dislike. They are as old as British punk, created in 1977 by Mark Astronaut (real name Mark Wilkins) in his hometown, Welwyn Garden City. The band had strong bonds with The Zounds and The Mob and often toured together. Also, the Astronauts were politically active with an apparent left wing attitude and played in numerous free anti-fascist festivals. Their style isn't all that punk or post punk, but had a rather folk-ish style altogether. Some fans call their style "hippie anarcho-punk" which applies also. Nevertheless, their sound evolved even further with every album they released. Out of an extended discography we chose to present you their fourth release, a mini LP entitled "The Seedy Side of The Astronauts" issued in 1987 through All The Madmen label.
"The Seedy Side of The Astronauts" mLP is more or less what its title implies, a more psychedelic outlook of a band that was never meant to conform. This psychedelic hue is more evident in songs like "Fiona" and "Seedy Side of Paul", but less evident in "Political" which is a catchy protest song and "Indisputable Fact". The second side of the album is taken by the amazing two-part "Semaphore Men" which also contains a few experimental psychedelic clolours - at least the first part. 1. Zarkadakis: Wild Love mLP (Wipe Out!-1990)

Το "Wild Love" του Γιώργου Ζαρκαδάκη αναρτάται εδώ μετά από παράκληση αναγνώστη. Ελάχιστες οι πληροφορίες σχετικά με το μίνι άλμπουμ του Γ. Ζαρκαδάκη, του οποίου οι δραστηριότητες τα τελευταία χρόνια είναι κυρίως λογοτεχνικές. Είναι μια κυκλοφορία προσανατολισμένη σε new wave στυλ και ήχο Βρετανικής επιρροής όπως π.χ. David Bowie, όμως με βασικά ατού τις πρωτότυπες συνθέσεις και τα χαρακτηριστικά φωνητικά του Ζαρκαδάκη. Έχει σημασία να πούμε πως η πρώτη πλευρά του mini-LP ηχογραφήθηκε στο Λονδίνο ενώ η δεύτερη στην Αθήνα. Κατά τη γνώμη μας ξεχωρίζουν τα "Ride High"και "Omega City" αντίστοιχα από κάθε πλευρά.

ENG: One of our readers asked if we could post Zarkadakis' "Wild Love". Needless to say it was hard to find anything about this mini LP, except for the fact that George Zarkadakis is at present a poet and author. As for the music of the mini LP, the style is british new wave, e.g. David Bowie. What makes it unique though, is the original compositions and Zarkadakis' characteristic vocals. We should note that the first side of the album was recorded in London and the second one in Athens. In our opinion, the best songs of the album are "Ride High"and "Omega City" from each side respectively.

2. Childrens Day: A Message to Pretty mLP (The Vodka Label/Posh Boy-1986)
Οι Childrens Day κατάγονται από την Καλιφόρνια των Η.Π.Α. και παίζουν παθιασμένο indie rock διανθισμένο με νεο-ψυχεδελικές και post punk επιρροές. Ενώ το συγκεκριμένο mini LP κυκλοφόρησε το 1986, οι φρέσκιες ιδέες και η μουσική του μοιάζει σαν να γράφτηκε τουλάχιστον μια δεκαετία αργότερα. Το "A Message to Pretty" απαρτίζεται από 6 δυναμικές συνθέσεις (συν μία μεγαλύτερη εκτέλεση του "Bad Train Ride") τόσο ευρηματικές και μελωδικές που πραγματικά δεν θα μπορούμε να ξεχωρίσουμε κάποια ως λιγότερο απολαυστική.
ENG: Childrens Day originate from California, U.S. and play passionate indie rock music garnished with neo-psychedelic and post punk influences. Even if "A Message to Pretty" mini LP was released in 1986, it is full of the kind of music not seen until a decade after. "A Message to Pretty" consists of 6 powerful songs (plus one longer version of "Bad Train Ride"). Every one of the songs is so inspired and melodic that it is difficult for us to choose which is the best one.

3. Korova Milkbar: Like Chewing Electricity mLP (Joker Records-1990)
Φαίνεται πως οι Σουηδοί Korova Milkbar αρέσκονται στο να κυκλοφορούν την καταπληκτική μουσική τους σε μικρές δόσεις... Το δεύτερο μίνι άλμπουμ τους με τίτλο "Like Chewing Electricity" κυκλοφόρησε δύο χρόνια μετά το καταπληκτικό "Super Sonic Death Trip" και μοιράζεται εξίσου την ίδια ενέργεια και δυναμική με τη διαφορά πως οι συνθέσεις δεν είναι τόσο πρωτότυπες. Πάντως οι κιθάρες επιμένουν να είναι τόσο πυκνές και σαρωτικές όσο και πριν.
ENG: It appears that the Swedish Korova Milkbar had the habit of releasing their music in small doses, as in mini LPs. Their second mini album entitled "Like Chewing Electricity" was released two years after the astounding "Super Sonic Death Trip" and it shares the same powerful dynamic, except that the compositions aren't that original. The guitar sound, is as dense and sweeping as it was before.

4. The Mindblowers: Fear of Fantasy (Normal Records-1986)
Οι Mindblowers είναι ένα post punk/gothic σχήμα από την (πρώην Δυτική) Γερμανία κατά πάσα πιθανότητα από την πόλη Osnabruck. Δεν γνωρίζαμε την ύπαρξη του άλμπουμ, αλλά ο φίλος f@NdY μας δάνεισε την κόπια του για να το ακούσουμε, και το οποίο έχει τον ευφάνταστο τίτλο "Fear of Fantasy" και είναι ίσως το μοναδικό που κυκλοφόρησαν. Είναι ένα από τα πιο ωραία post punk/gothic άλμπουμ που ακούσαμε πρόσφατα, καθώς είναι γεμάτο από έμπνευση και πειραματισμό, με εμφανείς επιρροές από Christian Death, Bauhaus, Birthday Party και άλλα συναφή σχήματα. Προσέξτε ιδιαίτερα τα "Lonesome Hobo", "Four Dead Horses", "Love of a Simple Man" και "Fear of Fantasy".
ENG: The Mindblowers are a post punk/gothic group from (former West) Germany, most probably originating from the city of Osnabruck. We couldn't possibly know the existence of this LP, but it was on loan from our friend f@NdY, so we eventually listened to it. First, the title is quite imaginable "Fear of Fantasy" and it's the band's sole release. It proved to be one of the most enjoyable post punk/gothic LPs we have come across recently, and it is full of inspiration as well as experimentation. Most obviously The Mindblowers have been influenced by Christian Death, Bauhaus, Birthday Party and other similar groups. Pay special attention to "Lonesome Hobo", "Four Dead Horses", "Love of a Simple Man" and "Fear of Fantasy".

5. Beton Combo: Perfektion Ist Sache Der Gotter LP (Aggressive Rockproduktionen-1981)
Αυτό το άλμπουμ έχει ήδη αναρτηθεί και στο 'musicnotnoize.blogspot.com', όμως θεωρήσαμε πως χρειαζόταν καινούργια ψηφιοποίηση. Οι Beton Combo παίζουν punk/post punk και έρχονται από το (Δυτικό) Βερολίνο. Μας αρέσει ιδιαίτερα το μελωδική punk ύφος των τραγουδιών του "Perfektion Ist Sache Der Gotter". Από εκεί και μετά, οι επόμενες κυκλοφορίες τους είναι σε hardcore punk στυλ. Μας αρέσει και το γεγονός πως τα θέματα που πραγματεύονται είναι κοινωνικά και πολιτικά. Το "Perfektion Ist..." είναι το μοναδικό μεγάλο άλμπουμ που κυκλοφόρησαν και περιέχει εξαιρετικές στιγμές όπως τα "Reich", "Der Langste Ritt", "Hohle Schweine" και το δικό μας αγαπημένο "N.R." (Nazis Raus). Απολαύστε το πιο κάτω...
ENG: This LP has already been posted on 'musicnotnoize.blogspot.com', but we felt that there was a need for a new rip. Beton Combo play punk/post punk and originate from (West) Berlin, Germany. What makes them special to us is the way they melodify punk music all through the "Perfektion Ist Sache Der Gotter" LP. In latter releases they went on to play in a much more hardcore style. We also like that their lyrics deal with socialand political issues. Anyway, the album "Perfektion Ist...." is their sole LP and contains some excellent songs such as "Reich", "Der Langste Ritt", "Hohle Schweine" and our personal favourite "N.R." (Nazis Raus). Enjoy it further down this post.
