Ein Jahr Garantie: Hoch/tief, 1982 AufRuhr Records

Κλείνουμε τον Ιούλιο με αυτή την ανάρτηση-συνέχεια στο διαρκές αφιέρωμα στο Νέο Γερμανικό Κύμα, το NDW. Μετά τους Schwefel, Giorbino/Eldorado, η νέα προσφορά του "The Unspeakable" που είναι ένα σπάνιο άλμπουμ από το 1982. Δεν μπορέσαμε να βρούμε πολλές πληροφορίες για τη μπάντα αυτή, παρά μόνο τα ονόματα των μελών. Tο "Hoch/tief" είναι η μοναδική τους κυκλοφορία από την AufRuhr Records οι κυκλοφορίες της οποίας κινούνται σε πειραματικό και εναλλακτικό ήχο. Πράγματι, ο ήχος είναι πειραματικός, με up-tempo διάθεση και εμφανείς επιρροές από την Kraut σκηνή. Όμως δεν είναι ελιτίστικος και σε αυτό βοηθούν αρκετά κομμάτια αρχής γενομένης με το 1+1=2 και το ομώνυμο Hoch/tief. Δώστε προσοχή στο πόσο δεμένη μπάντα είναι, πως η ντραμς κυριαρχεί στα περισσότερα κομμάτια, υποβοηθούμενη από μινιμαλιστικές πινελιές στην κιθάρα και τα πνευστά (σαξόφωνο) που δίνουν αυτή τη διαφορετική χροιά στον ήχο των Ein Jahr Garantie. Γενικότερα υπάρχει μια -θα λέγαμε- εύθυμη ατμόσφαιρα στις 12 συνθέσεις που απαρτίζουν αυτό το μικρό αριστούργημα. Όσοι έχουν τη διάθεση να πειραματιστούν και να ακούσουν κάτι διαφορετικό σίγουρα δεν έχουν τίποτα να χάσουν. Απολαύστε το !!!

It's the end of July and we decided to "close" this month by posting another sample of NDW, due to the informal tribute about this scene that we started with Schwefel and Giorbino/Eldorado. It is about a rare LP from 1982 also offered by "The Unspeakable". The truth is that we weren't able to find lots of information about this group except for the band members. "Hoch/tief" LP is their one and only release from AufRuhr Records whose releases deal with experimental/alternative music. "Hoch/tief" proves its experimental roots as each song reveals an up-tempo mood and distinct influences from the Kraut scene. However not as elitist, while some of the songs may sound 'friendlier': the intriguing guitar of "1+1=2" and the same titled "Hoch/tief". Pay attention to how tied up this band is, and how the drums is the protagonist of most of the songs, assisted by minimal guitar licks and the dominant saxophone. All these instruments together colour the music of Ein Jahr Garantie. The fun atmosphere in all 12 compositions adds to it. Whoever is in the mood of experimenting with their listening taste and want to listen to something different have nothing to lose. Enjoy !!!

VA: Random Relations 1, 1992, Elfish Records

Λυπόμαστε πολύ για τη μεγάλη καθυστέρηση στις αναρτήσεις, ήταν κυρίως λόγω κάποιων τεχνικών προβλημάτων. Επανήλθαμε όμως και σας παρουσιάζουμε μια συλλογή της Elfish Records, την Random Relations 1, με διάφορους καλλιτέχνες του ανεξάρτητου Ελληνικού μουσικού στερεώματος.

Η Elfish, ήταν μια από τις πιο "αθόρυβες" αλλά όχι ασήμαντες ανεξάρτητες δισκογραφικές εταιρείες στην Ελλάδα με δράση κυρίως στα πρώτα χρόνια της δεκαετίας του 1990, με λίγες αλλά πολύ σημαντικές πληροφορίες για την ιστορία της σκηνής. Όπως καταλάβατε αυτή είναι μια γενική εισαγωγή για την Elfish, επειδή είναι δύσκολο να προλογίσει κανείς μια συλλογή, της οποίας εξ' ορισμού το υλικό είναι ανομοιογενές (....experimental, ambient, electronic, industrial, pop). Ίσως έτσι είναι πιο εύκολο να προσεγγίσουμε το μουσικό προσανατολισμό της συλλογής αυτής, η οποία είναι πολυσυλλεκτική. Ονόματα όπως οι Sub, Raw, In Trance 95, Rehearsed Dreams (ίσως η μοναδική τους κυκλοφορία εκτός του Repulsion), Coti K., Spider's Web, Sound Device, Spiros Faros, ακόμα και De Traces σε πιο dub/reggae ακούσματα.

Η πρώτη Random Relations είναι γεμάτη διαμάντια και πολύτιμα ακούσματα, όπως και η δεύτερη που θα αναρτηθεί σύντομα μαζί με άλλες κυκλοφορίες της Elfish. Μη χάσετε την ευκαιρία να τους ρίξετε μια ματιά.

We apologize for the long delay of our posts, due to certain technical issues. However we are back to bring you a compilation from Elfish Records, "Random Relations 1" compiled of various artists from the independent Greek music scene. Elfish Records was one of the most "silent" but nevertheless important independent labels in Greece, whose action was limited among the first years of the 90's releasing a few but significant numbers. You understand that this is a general introduction of the Elfish sound....experimental, ambient, electronic, industrial, pop.

It is difficult to present a music compilation of such heterogenous soundscapes. Perhaps this is the easiest way to approach the orientation of "Random Relations 1", as it includes groups(or) projects such as Sub, Raw, In Trance 95, Rehearsed Dreams (perhaps the only release except Repulsion), Coti K., Spider's Web, Sound Device, Spiros Faros, even De Traces who belong in the dub/reggae genre.

Number 1 of "Random Relations" is full of gems and valuable music. The same goes for "Random Relations 2" that we are going to post soon (along with other rare and forgotten releases by the Elfish label). Dont miss the chance of checking these out.

Spinalonga: Bid Time Return, 1990, Poeta Negra Records

Σήμερα ανεβαίνει ένας σπανιότατος, αλλά και καθόλου καλοκαιρινός δίσκος... Είναι ένας δίσκος που είτε τον μισείς ή τον αγαπάς,για να συντροφεύει τα σκοτάδια σου, και για να σε κάνει να αποφεύγεις τα σκοτεινά σοκκάκια. Στην πραγματικότητα είναι όπως το πάρει κανείς, γιατί το σκοτάδι της ψυχής και της ανθρώπινης ύπαρξης πολύ δύσκολα παίρνει μορφή, πολύ δύσκολα να το αντιπροσωπεύσει ένας ήχος... ή μια μουσική. Πάντως πιστεύουμε πως το μουσικό σχήμα της σημερινής ανάρτησης τα καταφέρνει κάπως.

Πρόκειται για τους Spinalonga, ένα συγκρότημα μυστήριο, απαρτίζεται από ένα, από δύο, είναι κανονική μπάντα; Είναι μόνο αυτός ο τύπος ο Daniel Drablow ή κι άλλος ένας ο Daliweb? Ποιός ξέρει; Πρόκειται πάντως για ένα από τα πιο μυστήρια σχήματα της Ελληνικής αντ σκηνής που παίζουν σκοτεινό και ατμοσφαιρικό ambient, με πολλά darkwave στοιχεία. Ουσιαστικά από τα οκτώ κομμάτια του δίσκου, μόνο τα δύο έχουν στίχους, και ειναι εξόχως επιβλητικά και μεγάλα σε διάρκεια (Elaine, Tide). Το Bid Time Return είναι ουσιαστικά τοπρώτο τους άλμπουμ. Οι Spinalonga πήραν το όνομά τους από ένα νησί που βρίσκεταιστα ανατολικά ανοιχτά της Κρήτης κοντά στην πασίγνωστη Ελούντα. Το νησάκι αυτό έχει μεγάλη ιστορία, είναι γεμάτη πολέμους, κατακτήσεις, και Ενετικά κάστρα, δηλάδή άλλαξε πολλές φορές χέρια στην ιστορία του, αλλά και ονομασία. Στα αρχαία χρόνια λεγόταν Καλυδώνα, στα νεότερα λέγεται πια Spinalonga - ονομασία Ενετική που σημαίνει "Μακρύ Αγκάθι". Εκεί λοιπόν υπήρξε μία από τις τελευταίες κοινότητες λεπρών στην Ευρώπη κατά τα χρόνια 1903-1957. Λέγεται πως οι λεπροί έμπαιναν στο νησί από την λεγόμενη "Πύλη του Δάντη". Πραγματικά επιβλητικό!

Πως να μην είναι στοιχειωμένο ένα τέτοιο μέρος... κουβάλησε τόση οδύνη και πόνο μέσα στο Χρόνο. Τόσο σκοτάδι... [πληροφορίες από wikipedia]. (Δείτε και φωτογραφίες που βρήκα στο διαδίκτυο).

Τώρα που γνωρίζετε αυτές τις λεπτομέρειες του ονόματός τους με την ιστορία του νησιού, ίσως είναι πιο εύκολο να φανταστεί κανείς τη μουσικήτην οποία οι λέξεις είναι δύσκολο να περιγράψουν.

Today's post is a rare to find, but not at all a summertime mood LP... It's a record that you either hate or love, to join you either way in your darkness, and make you avoid dark streets. It is really very hard to represent the darkness of the soul and human existence with sound. Yet, we believe that this group achieves it up to a certain point.

It is about Spinalonga, a mysterious group. Is one or two people part of this group? Who knows? Is it only this fellow Daniel Drablow or another one called Daliweb? However they are a Greek band associated with the underground scene and they play dark atmospheric ambientmusic with lots of darkwave treats. Technically out of the eight tracks of this LP, only two of them have lyrics, and they are exquisite, imposing and long (Elaine, Tide). "Bid Time Return" LP is their first album (on Poeta Negra Records). Their curious name has been borrowed by an island east of Crete near the famous Elouda. This little island has a long story of wars, conquests, Venetian castles that now seem totally haunted. Changed conquerors and names too, as in theancient times it was called Kalidon, the Venetians named it Spinalonga (means long thorn in Latin). The most recent shocking fact aboutSpinalonga is that it has been one of the last leper colonies in Europe in the years 1903-1957. It is said that the lepers used to enter thisisland from a gate called "Dante's Gate". Really imposing!!! How cant this place be not haunted at all?? So much suffering and so much pain. Now that you know this detail about the band's name it might be easier to visualize the music, because is is not easy to describe it with words.

Giorbino & Eldorado: Ivanhoe!, Zick Zack Records 1981

Η σημερινή ανάρτηση μοιάζει λίγο σαν συνέχεια της προηγούμενης που αφορούσε τους Schwefel ως δείγμα της NDW σκηνής. Σήμερα παραθέτουμε άλλο ένα δείγμα της underground αυτής σκηνής, επίσης προσφορά του "The Unspeakable". Πρόκειται για μια ιδιότυπη συνεργασία με λαμπρό αποτέλεσμα, ο Andy Giorbino και Jaki Eldorado, δύο "ομιχλώδεις" φιγούρες της Γερμανικής new wave σκηνής ένωσαν τις δυνάμεις τους και έμπνευση φτιάχνοντας το "Ivanhoe!", ένα (σχεδόν) instrumental LP, καθαρόαιμο post-punk, με ελάχιστα ορατά ψήγματα-πινελιές επιρροών από ψυχεδέλεια και kraut rock. Μιλάμε για ένα "επικό" άλμπουμ κομματιών τα οποία με κανένα τρόπο δεν κοιμίζουν τον ακροατή. Έντεχνα "γεννούν" συνεχώς ευρηματικές μουσικές ροές με συνοδούς τα μινιμαλιστικά riff της κιθάρας καθώς και την καθοριστική αλλά εντέχνως χαλαρή rhythm session. Κάθε ένα από τα κομμάτια αυτά δίνει την εντύπωση πως είτε είναι μια ζωντανή εκτέλεση, ή πίσω του υπάρχει μια ομάδα μουσικών που απλά "τζαμάρει" και δημιουργεί ας πούμε "τυχαία" καλοκουρδισμένα πρότυπα post-punk μουσικής. Κλείνοντας να προσθέσουμε ότι συνολικά το "Ivanhoe!" δεν είναι ένα "βαρύ" άκουσμα και δεν έχει πρόθεση να προβληματίσει τον ακροατή, αλλά αντίθετα να τον βάλει σε μια πιο 'up-tempo" διάθεση.

SOMETHING ABOUT THE ALBUM....

Today's post is a continuation of the last concerning Schwefel as our first NDW specimen. Today we are presenting another sample of this underground scene, again offered by "The Unspeakable". It is about an odd collaboration with a brilliant outcome between Andy Giorbino and Jaki Eldorado two "obscure" characters of the German new wave scene, as they joined forces and inspiration in making "Ivanhoe!", an (almost) instrumental LP of pure post punk, with a few distinctive traces of psychedelia and kraut rock. We are talking about an "epic" music album of songs which don't let the listener get bored, because they are constantly give birth to imaginative music flows accompanied by the minimal guitar riffs as well as the determined but arty loose rhythm section. Each one of the tracks gives either the impression of being a live act, or that the musicians are just "jamming" along, creating random well-tuned standards of post punk music. On the whole, "Ivanhoe!" isn't a "heavy" listening and it's not intendedto make the listener concerned of anything in particular, but instead to introduce them into an up-tempo mood.

Morever, we have re-uploaded all the previously posted LPs with the Mediafire platform, also in the same 192 kbps quality. The reason for this upgrade is that we are doing a great deal of serious work in removing (hiss, clicks and pops) from the original vinyl LPs, aiming in better sound quality and finally it is a pity to lose quality from digital compression (mp3).

Film Noir: Never Ending Dream, 1986 Wipe Out Records

Ο δίσκος που θα παρουσιάσουμε σήμερα, μας έρχεται από τις δοξασμένες ημέρες της Ελληνικής ανεξάρτητης new wave σκηνής. Δεν θα μπούμε σε ιστορικά στοιχεία για το συγκρότημα, γιατί άλλοι φίλοι bloggers τα έχουν ήδη αναρτήσει εδώ και πολύ καιρό (θα τα βρείτε εδώ κι εδώ).

Το σημερινό ποστ αφορά τους Film Noir και την πρώτη τους κυκλοφορία με τίτλο "Never Ending Dream" στην Wipe Out Records το 1986, πιο συγκεκριμένα, είναι η 3η κυκλοφορία της Wipe Out. Το "Never Ending Dream".... είναι ένα mini-LP με 6 λιτές συνθέσεις, όλες τους ξεχωριστές, πανέμορφες, που μοιάζουν επιμελώς ατημέλητες στο πρώτο άκουσμα. Από το δεύτερο και μετά, δεν τα αποχωρίζεσαι ποτέ. Νοιώθει κανείς τη συναισθηματική φόρτιση κάθε κομματιού, τη μουσική, τη λιτή ενορχήστρωση, μπασο-κιθάρα-ντραμς-φωνή, που και που και κάποιες πινελιές από synth. Η μουσική αυτή μοιάζει απόηχος του παρελθόντος σαν παραμύθι, σαν όνειρο που δεν τελειώνει από τις ξέγνοιαστες μέρες της δεκαετίας του 80. Σε αυτό βοηθάει και το εξώφυλλο του δίσκου που προϊδεάζει για ένα ονειρεμένο άκουσμα....το κάστρο δίπλα στην θάλασσα (ή λίμνη) είναι κλασικό ρομαντικό θέμα. Υπάρχει μια διαχρονικότητα σε αυτά τα 6 τραγούδια που έρχεται και μένει στην καρδιά του ακροατή. Ο στίχος στο Excuses μένει χαραγμένος "How can anyone know me when I don't even know myself....", πραγματικά πολύ ενδοσκοπικός. Το πιο αξιοπρόσεκτο εκτός βέβαια από τα ίδια τα τραγούδια βέβαια είναι τα φωνητικά της Μαριέλλας Λουκάκη, η οποία μοιάζει (και στις φωτογραφίες) αναμφισβήτητη περσόνα της new wave, χαρακτηριστική της εποχής, και είναι κρίμα που δεν συνέχισε - μετά από αυτό το άλμπουμ - να ασχολείται με την μουσική και το τραγούδι. Από πηγές κυρίως στο ίντερνετ (βλ. πιο πάνω) η Μαριέλλα Λουκάκη, άφησε το μάταιο κόσμο πολύ νέα (33), πράγμα που προσθέτει στη μπάντα μια κάλτ ταυτότητα. Η φωνή της άλλοτε παγερή, άλλοτε αποστασιοποιημένη, άλλοτε θλιμμένη ή πονεμένη δίνει μια γκρίζα και αμφιλεγόμενη απόχρωση στις συνθέσεις.

Όσοι δεν έχουν ακούσει αυτό το δίσκο ως τώρα, σίγουρα θα τους συναρπάσει, όσοι τον ξέρουν θα συγκινηθούν και θα βρεθούν στο δρόμο για ένα ακόμα ταξίδι πάλι στην δεκαετία της εφηβείας μας και των πρώιμων ονείρων (που δεν τελειώνουν ποτέ).

Friends outside Greece.....

The record we are presenting today comes back from the days of the unknown glory of the Greek Independent new wave scene. We are not going to mention historical facts about the band, other fellow-bloggers have dealt with it here and here.

Today's post is about Film Noir and their debut mini-LP "Never Ending Dream" released on Wipe Out Records in 1986 (actually the 3rd number of Wipe Out). "Never Ending Dream".... is a 6-track mLP, each track distinctive, simply composed, and beautiful, and they sound like demos the very first time one listens to them. The second time and on, one does never let them go. You can feel fully charged by the music and the emotions, the simple arrangement (bass-guitar-drums-voice and a few touches of synth here and there). This music echoes from the past like a fairy tale and it really has the sound of a never ending dream of the carefree days of the 80's. The front cover adds to that with the photo of a castle by the sea (or lake)... altogether a classic romantic theme. There is a timeless feeling in each and every one of the six songs that comes to stay in the listener's heart. The verse from "Excuses" ("how can anyone know me when I don't even know myself....") is really very self reflecting. The most notable however about this debut is the voice quality of Mariella Loukaki (in pictures she is an indisputable new wave persona of the era). It is a pity that she didn't continue with making music, and the fact that she died at the age of 33 labels the band and herself as "cult". Her voice sounds either cold or detached, sad or hurt, gives a grey and ambiguous colour to all the songs.

We are sure that it will excite those who have not listened to this gem yet, and the ones who already stumbled upon it, will be touched again and find themselves towards a trip into the decade of our puberty and early dreams (that never end).

"Εφυγε" ο Γιώργος Μακρίδης των F.M.Q.

Μια είδηση από το χώρο της ανεξάρτητης new/dark wave σκηνής την οποία αναμεταδίδουμε από το blog "20thcenturyjunks", και η οποία αφορά τους λιγοστούς οπαδούς αυτής της σκηνής, συμπεριλαμβάνοντας και εμάς τους Ten Thousand Eyes...

Στις 7 Ιουνίου "εφυγε" ο Γιώργος Μακρίδης, στους πολλούς γνωστός από τη δουλειά του σε μεταφράσεις-αποδόσεις των υποτίτλων σε πολλές ταινίες. Στους λίγους είναι γνωστός από την συμμετοχή του σε συγκροτήματα όπως Parthenogenesis και το πολύ σημαντικό σχήμα της σκηνής Forward Music Quintet. O "shaman" του Vanishing Soldiers άφησε το μάταιο αυτό κόσμο.

Striking news from the area of independent new/dark wave scene in Greece. We re-transmit them from the fellow-blog "20thcenturyjunks.blogspot.com". The news concern the few fans of this scene including Ten Thousand Eyes...

Giorgos Makridis died on June 7 (2010), he was commonly known from translating and subtitling foreign films. He was not so well known about his involvement in music with Parthenogenesis and the very important Forward Music Quintet. The "shaman" of Vanishing Soldiers has left the cruel world.
