Les Enfants Terribles: Another Country LP, 1990 [Midnight Music

Να και ένα συγκρότημα από την πόλη Tours της Γαλλίας, το οποίο δεν έχουμε δει να έχει ανέβει σε μπλόγκ. Ονομάζονται Les Enfants Terribles και έχουν βγάλει μόνο ένα επτάϊντσο single και ένα άλμπουμ. Αρχικά το όνομα τους ήταν Acid Brains, όμως αφού υπέγραψαν με την θρυλική Βρετανική δισκογραφική Midnight Music, το άλλαξαν σε Les Enfants Terribles, πιθανόν ως φόρο τιμής στην ομώνυμη ταινία του Φρανσουά Τρυφώ. Ίσως και να το έκαναν επειδή ήθελαν να δηλώσουν την καταγωγή τους όντες σε μια Βρετανική δισκογραφική.
Αν και το μοναδικό τους άλμπουμ "Another Country" δεν είναι ένας ακρογωνιαίος λίθος στην ανεξάρτητη ροκ μουσική σκηνή, εντούτοις καταφέρνει να περιέχει κάποια εξαιρετικά κομμάτια που ξεχωρίζουν με την πρώτη, όπως για παράδειγμα τα "In A Room Like Yours", "Paths Of Glory", "So Far From The East" and "New Beginning". Παρ' όλο που τα υπόλοιπα τραγούδια στέκουν με αξιοπρέπεια με ωραίες κιθάρες και ενορχηστρώσεις, θα μπορούσε κάποιος να κατηγορήσει τους Les Enfants Terribles πως έχουν πολλές επιρροές από τους Echo and the Bunnymen. Όχι πως αυτό είναι απαραίτητα κακό βέβαια.

ENG: Here's a band from Tours, France, which we haven't seen posted elsewhere. They are called Les Enfants Terribles and they have only released a single and an LP. Originally they were called Acid Brains, but when they signed with the legendary British label Midnight Music they changed it to Les Enfants Terribles, obviously as a tribute to Francois Truffaud's movie with the same title. It might also be that they wanted to state that they were actually a French band who had signed with a British label.
Even if their sole 1990 LP "Another Country" isn't a stepping stone of the Alternative Rock and New Wave scene, it boasts some great songs which stand out such as "In A Room Like Yours", "Paths Of Glory", "So Far From The East" and "New Beginning". Although the rest of the songs are decent with great guitar and arrangements, one could argue that the band seem to be heaviy influenced by Echo and the Bunnymen; not necessarily a bad thing after all.

Mutton Gun: Into The Hogger LP, 1991 Mint Records

Ένας από τους δίσκους που ανακαλύψαμε πρόσφατα και μας έχει κάνει εντύπωση είναι το "Into The Hogger" των Mutton Gun οι οποίοι δεν είναι ιδιαίτερα γνωστοί, αλλά ούτε και ανέβηκε καμία από τις κυκλοφορίες τους στο διαδίκτυο, από όσο γνωρίζουμε. Είναι κρίμα που και πάλι είναι λίγες οι πληροφορίες που μπορούμε να βρούμε. Όμως από ορισμένα στοιχεία που εντοπίσαμε εδώ κι εκεί συμπεράναμε πως ήταν βραχύβιο σχήμα από την Μεγάλη Βρετανία που συμπεριλάμβανε τον Justin Harwood, μέλος των Chills και τον Gordon Rutherford, μέλος των Nocturnal Projections. Το "Into The Hogger" είναι η δεύτερη μεγάλη κυκλοφορία τους κατά το 1991 μέσω της δισκογραφικής Mint (σχετικής με την Jungle Records).
Η μουσική του άλμπουμ είναι εξαιρετική και αποτελείται από την υλοποίηση πρωτότυπων ιδεών, καθώς το συγκρότημα πειραματίζεται και αυτοσχεδιάζει διακριτικά, συνδυάζοντας παράλληλα την αισθητική των 90's με την post punk, λόγου χάρη στα "Baby Born With Wooden Arm" και "Ol' One Eye", ή με την ίδια άνεση δίνουν μια νότα ebm, όπως κάνουν στο "Pussycat". Συνολικά όμως το αποτέλεσμα είναι αρκούντως ατμοσφαιρικό. Θα σας φανούν ενδιαφέροντα τα όμορφα γυναικεία και ανδρικά φωνητικά που αναδύονται μέσα από πυκνές και παραμορφωτικές κιθαριστικές πινελιές. Συνολικά το "Into The Hogger" είναι ένα ικανοποιητικό άκουσμα. Ελπίζουμε πως θα το απολαύσετε όσο και εμείς.

ENG: One of the albums we've come across recently and have been really impressed by, is Mutton Gun's "Into The Hogger". They aren't as popular, neither any of their work has been posted on blog, as far as we know. It is also a pity that very little information can be tracked down on the net. From information fragments here and there we infer that they were a short-lived band from the U.K. which included Justin Harwood, a member of The Chills and Gordon Rutherford, a member of Nocturnal Projections. "Into The Hogger" was their second Long Play release in 1991 through Mint (a label associated with Jungle Records).
The music is brilliant and utilises original concepts as the band improvises and experiments subtly with various styles; when combibining the aesthetics of 90's rock with earlier post punk ("Baby Born With Wooden Arm", "Ol' One Eye"), or loosely adding a touch of ebm on "Pussycat". Nevertheless, they provide lots of ambience that is quite effective throughout. What might also catch your attention is the range between beautiful female and male vocals, especially when they emerge through densely distorted guitars. Overall, "Into The Hogger" is a satisfying listen. Hope you'll enjoy it as much as we have.

Οι Mushrooms ανήκουν στα συγκροτήματα για τα οποία μπορεί κανείς να βρεί πλείστες πληροφορίες στο διαδίκτυο. Πολλά μουσικά blog έχουν ήδη αναφερθεί σε αυτή την θρυλική garage rock μπάντα, εμείς όμως δεν κάνουμε την ανάρτηση για να προσθέσουμε κάτι καινούργιο, απλά καταγράφουμε την άποψη μας για τη μουσική τους. Ειλικρινά το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ θα μπορούσε και θα έπρεπε να ήταν στις πρώτες αναρτήσεις μας το 2010. Δεν είμαστε σίγουροι γιατί έμεινε απέξω, όμως κάποια στιγμή συνειδητοποιήσαμε πως η μουσική τους ήδη λατρευόταν από χιλιάδες οπαδούς. Οπαδοί τους και εμείς, πιστεύουμε πως τώρα είναι η στιγμή να αναρτήσουμε τον πρώτο τους δίσκο με τίτλο "Taste Of ..." που πρωτοκυκλοφόρησε το 1986 για να ανανεώσουμε το ενδιαφέρον των παλιών οπαδών του group και να μυήσουμε νέους οπαδούς παγκοσμίως.
Οι Mushrooms λοιπόν ήταν ένα πολλά υποσχόμενο Θεσσαλονικιώτικο σχήμα που κυκλοφόρησε δύο ολοκληρωμένους δίσκους και μερικά τραγούδια σε συλλογές όπως η "Cicadas (An Electric Guide To The Greek Underground)". Παρεπιπτόντως, στο blog των urban aspirines θα βρείτε και το "Scarecrow Princes" το δεύτερο άλμπουμ των Mushrooms. Σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες από το ένθετο του "Taste Of ..." το συγκρότημα απαρτιζόταν από τους Purple Jelly ή Pluto (Γιώργο Αντωνιάδη) στα φωνητικά και τους στίχους, τους Ασκληπιό (Ασκληπιό Ζαμπέτα) και Grandfather (Γιώργο Κυριάκο) στις κιθάρες και τα δεύτερα φωνητικά, τον Tripmaker (Κώστα Τρυψάνη) στο μπάσσο και τέλος τον Atmas (Γιώργο Ατματζίδη) στα τύμπανα. Μη νομίσετε όμως πως οι παραπάνω μουσικοί ήταν άπειροι, αφού είναι γεγονός πως πριν από τους Mushrooms είχαν ήδη θητεύσει σε σχήματα όπως οι International Comedy, Silent Moves, κ.α. Με τη διάλυση των Mushrooms κατά το 1991, τα περισσότερα μέλη προχώρησαν σε νέες μουσικές συνεργασίες. Δυστυχώς ο τραγουδιστής-στιχουργός Γιώργος Αντωνιάδης που είχε χρόνιο πρόβλημα με τα ναρκωτικά πέθανε από υπερβολική δόση το 2004.
Ακούγοντας προσεκτικά το "Taste Of ..." συνειδητοποιεί κανείς πως συνδυάζει ποικιλόμορφα στυλ και επιρροές σε μόλις δέκα αυθεντικά garage rock τραγούδια, κάποια από αυτά με ψυχεδελική θεματολογία (π.χ. "Child Of The Tide", "Yard Of My Head"). Η μουσική τους έχει διαχρονική απόχρωση και αποπνέει τη φρεσκάδα του καινούργιου ακόμη και σήμερα αφού βρίθει από καταπληκτικές ιδέες που διαποτίζουν ολόκληρο το άλμπουμ με ενέργεια και πάθος. Επιπλέον διαβάστε και τους στίχους του Γιώργου Αντωνιάδη όπου ενώ υπάρχει η αναμενόμενη ψυχεδελική θεματολογία, τα περισσότερα τραγούδια μιλούν και για το (υποκριτικό) ήθος της κοινωνίας, την μοναξιά και την αποξένωση. Είμαστε σίγουροι πως η πλειοψηφία των αναγνωστών μας θα συμμεριστεί τις απόψεις και θα αγαπήσει τη μουσική τους αν δεν το έχετε ήδη κάνει. Καλή ακρόαση!

ENG: The Mushrooms are a band about which you can find a lot on the web. Several music blogs have already mentioned this legendary Greek garage rock band, yet we're not adding anything new but our own perspective on their music. Honestly, their first album should have been one of our first posts back in 2010. For what reason we left it aside we can't really say now, but at some point we realised that The Mushrooms' two albums had already been celebrated by thousands of fans. We ourselves love their music too, so we think that the present could be the time to bring a new rip of their first LP "Taste Of ..." that was released in 1986 and in this way we renew the interest of old fans and initiate new fans worldwide.
The Mushrooms were a promising garage rock band from Thessaloniki, Greece and survived enough to deliver two full LPs and a few songs scattered among various artists compilations such as "Cicadas (An Electric Guide To The Greek Underground)". In the same blog you'll find "Scarecrow Princes", the band's second LP too. As noted on the first album's inner sleeve, the band consisted of Purple Jelly/Pluto (Giorgos Antoniadis) on vocals and lyrics, Asklipios (Asklipios Zampetas) and Grandfather (Giorgos Kyriakos) on guitars and backing vocals, Tripmaker (Kostas Trypsanis) on bass and finally Atmas (Giorgos Atmatzidis) on drums. Do not concider the aforementioned musicians to be amateurs because by the time they assembled The Mushrooms, they had already been members of other known bands like International Comedy and Silent Moves among few. After The Mushrooms' demise in 1991 they went on to form new or join existing bands. Unfortunately, the singer Giorgos Antoniadis who had chronic drug abuse issues died in 2004.
Upon listening to the "Taste Of ..." it really grabs you because it combines several music styles and influences into ten original and authentic garage-driven songs, few of which deal with psychedelic themes (e.g. "Child Of The Tide", "Yard Of My Head"). The music sounds fresh even today and the songs are all-time classics with great ideas that permeate the album throughout, vibrating with energy and passion. Additionally, the lyrics written by Giorgos Antoniadis (Purple Jelly/Pluto) are worth mentioning too. Besides the expected psychedelic-related themes, the songs speak of the (hypocritical) morals, loneliness and alienation. We believe that most of you will relate to their ideas and love their music if you haven't done so already! Enjoy The Mushrooms!

Set Fatale: Set Fatale LP 1987, Independance

Οι Set Fatale ήταν ένα σχήμα από την Γερμανία, πιθανότατα από το Αμβούργο. Οι ελάχιστες πληροφορίες που έχουμε στη διάθεσή μας προέρχονται κυρίως από το οπισθόφυλλο παρά το διαδίκτυο. Το συγκρότημα αποτελούνταν από τρία μέλη: τους αδελφούς Can και Cem Oral και τον Roger Cobernus οι οποίοι παρέμειναν μουσικά ενεργοί και τις επόμενες δεκαετίες. Εκτός από το ομώνυμο άλμπουμ που παρουσιάζουμε σήμερα, το συγκρότημα δεν ήταν ιδιαίτερα δραστήριο δισκογραφικά. Οι κυκλοφορίες τους αποτελούνται από μια split κασέτα με τους Poison Dwarfs το 1986, και ένα 12ιντσο single -μάλλον εμπορικής/χορευτικής κατεύθυνσης το 1988.
Συνολικά το άλμπουμ "Set Fatale" είναι το άθροισμα εννέα ατμοσφαιρικών post punk τραγουδιών, επιβλητικά δοσμένα στα Γερμανικά αλλά και στα Αγγλικά. Η μουσική τους είναι ένα δυναμικό πάντρεμα post punk, new wave και industrial rock. Σχετικά με το τελευταίο, ίσως θα έπρεπε να αναφέρουμε πως την παραγωγή του δίσκου έκανε ο Rodney Orpheus των αγαπημένων μας Cassandra Complex. Ο Orpheus βοήθησε επίσης κάνοντας δεύτερα φωνητικά σε τρία τραγούδια.
Όσα αναφέραμε πιο πάνω συνιστούν ένα δίσκο φτιαγμένο για να τον απολαύσουν και να τον αξιολογήσουν οι επερχόμενες γενιές. Ελπίζουμε πως και εσείς θα εκτιμήσετε τη μουσική των Set Fatale.

ENG: Set Fatale were a band from Germany, most likely from Hamburg. There isn't much about them online, so most information comes from the back cover of the album. It seems that Set Fatale consisted of three members; brothers Can and Cem Oral and Roger Cobernus, all of whom remained active until later in the 90's and 00's. Apart from the homonymous LP we're presenting today, Set Fatale seem to have released a split cassette with a band called Poison Dwarfs in 1986 and a 12'' single in 1988 which appears to be some sort of commercial dance release.
Overall, "Set Fatale" LP is a sum of atmospheric post punk songs delivered in an imposing manner both in German and English lyrics. The music is a powerful amalgam of post punk, new wave and fragments of industrial rock. Especially for that last part, we should mention here that Rodney Orpheus of our favourites The Cassandra Complex did the production of the album and took part in three of the songs helping with the backing vocals.
All the above constitute a record made for later generations to enjoy and evaluate. We hope you'll appreciate the music of Set Fatale yourselves.

Next To Nothing: Long Way to the Sun mLP 1988, Wipe Out! Records

Από το ξεκίνημα αυτού του blog, αναλάβαμε να αναδείξουμε θαυμάσιους δίσκους της post punk/new wave/alternative της Ελληνικής -και όχι μόνο- underground σκηνής. Ένας δίσκος που είχε ανάγκη μια ανανέωση στη συνείδηση των αναγνωστών μας είναι η μοναδική κυκλοφορία των Next To Nothing, το μίνι LP με τίτλο "Long Way to the Sun" (1988), άλμπουμ που υπήρξε ένα από τα αγαπημένα μας, την ανάρτηση του οποίου συνεχίζαμε να αναβάλλουμε επ' αόριστον μέχρι και σήμερα.
Οι Next To Nothing ήταν μια μπάντα από την Αθήνα και είναι γεγονός πως είχαν σχέση με τους Headleaders καθώς ο Ζοζέφ Μπασελιέ χρημάτισε ντράμερ και τραγουδιστής και των Headleaders. Το βασικό ύφος των Next To Nothing είναι ένα μελωδικό rock με αυστραλέζικες και αμερικάνικες alternative αναφορές. Οι ποικίλες αποχρώσεις των τραγουδιών δεν προκαλούν έκπληξη δεδομένου πως πρόκειται για συγκρότημα που άνοιξε συναυλίες για τους Gun Club αλλά και για τους Celibate Rifles το 1988.
Αξιολογώντας το μίνι άλμπουμ τους, δεν μπορούμε να εξαιρέσουμε ούτε ένα κομμάτι από τα επτά που περιέχονται. Αναμφισβήτητα είναι στο σύνολό τους προϊόν σκληρής δουλειάς, έμπνευσης και πρωτοτυπίας. Πάντως δεν είναι εύκολο ενώ εξυμνούμε μια τέτοια εξαιρετική κυκλοφορία να επιλέξουμε τις καλύτερες στιγμές απλούστατα γιατί πρόκειται για αγαπημένες μουσικές από τα παλιά. Είμαστε βέβαιοι πως εσείς θα επιλέξετε από μόνοι σας ποιά κομμάτια σάς ταιριάζουν. Απλά είναι να αναρωτιέται κανείς πόσες προσδοκίες έφερε η κυκλοφορία αυτού του καταπληκτικού δίσκου τότε. Προς το παρόν ευελπιστούμε πως θα απολαύσετε τη μουσική τους. Καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: Ever since we started this blog, we've undertaken the task of bringing out great albums from the post punk/new wave/alternative etc underground scene of Greece and elsewhere. Here's a record that our readers needed to be reminded of. Next To Nothing's sole release, the "Long Way to the Sun" (1988) mini LP has been one of those favourites we've always been planning to post, but kept postponing indefinitely until now...
Next To Nothing was a band from Athens, Greece and in fact was related to The Headleaders (Josef Baselier on drums was the singer and the drummer of The Headleaders). Next To Nothing's main focus is melodic rock influenced by the Australian and U.S. alternative scene. This musical diversity may not come as a surprise given that the band supported live The Gun Club and The Celibate Rifles in 1988.
There isn't a single song to be excluded among the seven of this mini LP. They are all undoubtedly the product of hard work, inspiration and originality. However, it is not an easy task to praise such an outstanding release and pick the best song(s) due to all of them being long time favourites. We're sure that all of you will find your own favourites among them after lots of listens. Just wondering, "Long Way to the Sun" was a promising release that must've created expectations to music lovers and fans at that time. For now, we hope you will enjoy their music. Have a good listening to this one.

Phillip Boa & The Voodoo Club: Thirty Years of Blank Expression LP 1988, Di Di Music

Ο Phillip Boa είναι ένας Γερμανός πολυπράγμων μουσικός με ευρεία δραστηριότητα. Ίδρυσε το alternative rock/new wave/avantgarde σχήμα Phillip Boa & The Voodoo Club το 1985 και από τότε κυκλοφόρησε αρκετούς δίσκους.

Το 1989 η ελληνική ανεξάρτητη δισκογραφική Di Di Music έβγαλε μια συλλογή με τίτλο "Thirty Years Of Blank Expression" που περιέχει σκόρπια κομμάτια από τα άλμπουμ "Philister" (1985) και "Aristocracie" (1986). Στη συλλογή περιέχεται και ένα κομμάτι-συνεργασία ("Spike Milligans Tape Recorder") με τους Membranes από το 12'' miniLP "Spike Milligans Tape Recorder".
Η μουσική των Phillip Boa & The Voodoo Club κυμαίνεται από πιασάρικη, ατμοσφαιρική, μέχρι και rock ή punk rock. Είναι δηλαδή γεμάτη με αντιθέσεις. Αυτό δείχνει μια δυναμική πειραματισμού που είναι έκδηλη σχεδόν σε όλα τα κομμάτια της συλλογής. Το "Thirty Years Of Blank Expression" μπορεί να είναι όλα τα παραπάνω, δηλαδή ένα άλμπουμ που συνδυάζει την ποικιλία, την τελειότητα και την ιδιοτροπία. Οπότε η αξιολόγηση εξαρτάται από τον ακροατή. ENG: Phillip Boa is a German musician of varied skill and activity. He founded the alternative rock/new wave/avantgarde band Phillip Boa & The Voodoo Club in 1985 and released a number of records ever since.
In 1989, the Greek label Di Di Music issued a compilation entitled "Thirty Years Of Blank Expression" that contained songs taken from the albums "Philister" and "Aristocracie" released in 1985 and 1986 respectively. The compilation also contains a collaboration song ("Spike Milligans Tape Recorder") with the Membranes from their 12'' miniLP "Spike Milligans Tape Recorder".
Phillip Boa & The Voodoo Club's music can be catchy, atmospheric and rocky too. In other words, it is full of contrasts. This manifests from lots of experimental potential, apparent in most of the songs here. "Thirty Years Of Blank Expression" may be all the above; an album of diversity,  excellence and oddity. Therefore, it appeals to your senses to appreciate the songs. Enjoy!

Μέσα στα πέντε χρόνια που λειτουργούμε το blog, σκεφτήκαμε αρκετές φορές να μνημονεύσουμε τον Ian Kevin Curtis (1957-1980) ανεβάζοντας μια ανάρτηση, σχεδόν ο,τιδήποτε. Πράγματι το πράξαμε μία φορά, αν και είναι ήδη φανερός ο θαυμασμός στο πρόσωπο του "ιδανικού αυτόχειρα" κάθε φορά που παρουσιάζουμε τη μουσική άλλων παρόμοιων καλλιτεχνών που -αναμφίβολα- επηρρεάστηκαν από τη δουλειά των Joy Division. Όμως ο Ian Curtis ως τραγουδιστής και στιχουργός τους ήταν μια εξέχουσα περίπτωση και χωρίς αυτόν οι J.D. ίσως να μην ήταν όπως τους γνωρίσαμε, ή και να μην υπήρχαν καθόλου. Αυτός όπως και ο Jim Morrisson έζησαν "κατά τον δαίμονα εαυτού" ("Possessed by a fury that burns from inside"). Ο πρόωρος θάνατος του τόν έκανε ήρωα στα μάτια κάθε έφηβου και έφηβης που ψιθύρισε, τραγούδησε τους στίχους που συνεχίζουν και θα συνεχίσουν να στοιχειώνουν τις ζωές μας.
Ο Ian Curtis ανέβηκε πρόωρα στο πάνθεον της αθανασίας για να μείνει εκεί για πάντα, μέσα από τα "The Eternal", "Decades", "Twenty-Four Hours", "Disorder", "Atmosphere", και πολλά άλλα τραγούδια, άφθαρτα στο διάβα του καιρού γιατί αφηγούνται βαθιά ανθρώπινες ιστορίες και όχι τον αυτοκτονικό παροξυσμό ενός επιληπτικού όπως κάποιοι υποστηρίζουν. Η καινοτόμος μουσική των J.D. και οι προσωπικοί στίχοι του Curtis θα είναι παντοτινά μαζί μας, κυρίως μέσω των μουσικών στους οποίους επέδρασαν άμεσα τα παραπάνω. Τέλος, υπάρχουν και αυτοί που διασκεύασαν μερικά από τα τραγούδια, κάποια από αυτά με εξαιρετικά καλό αποτέλεσμα.
Στην προηγούμενη ανάρτησή μας για τον Ian Curtis ανεβάσαμε μια συλλογή με διασκευές από Ιταλικά συγκροτήματα, η οποία τότε "κατέβηκε" κάπως απότομα (τώρα όμως την ανεβάσαμε ξανά). Σήμερα, ανεβάζουμε άλλη μία συλλογή με διασκευές από δώδεκα συγκροτήματα, αυτή τη φορά από τη Νορβηγία. Ανάμεσά τους βρίσκονται και κάποια αναγνωρίσιμα σχήματα όπως οι Beyond Dawn και οι Theatre of Tragedy που δίνουν τη δική τους ενδιαφέρουσα εκδοχή στις συνθέσεις των Joy Division. Καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: Running this blog for the past five years, it has been our intent to mention Ian Kevin Curtis (1957-1980) in a relevant post. Indeed, we have done this once. Nevertheless, our admiration towards such an outstanding "ideal suicide" cannot be subtle even when we post about similar artists who have undoubtedly been influenced by Joy Division. Ian Curtis as J.D's lead singer and lyricist was an exceptional figure; Joy Division may not have been the same without him, or they may not have been at all. He lived his short life like Jim Morrisson, true to his own spirit (Kata ton Daimona Eaftou/"Possessed by a fury that burns from inside"). Curtis' premature passing turned him into a hero for lots of people, mostlly adolescents; it is possible they have whispered or sung Curtis' haunting verses sometime in their life. Needless to say, these lyrics will keep on "haunting" our lives.
Ian Curtis rose up the pantheon of immortality to stay there forever; songs like "The Eternal", "Decades", "Twenty-Four Hours", "Disorder", "Atmosphere" and others witness that. These songs will remain timeless because the lyrics narrate true human tales and emotions and not the suicidal fits of an epileptic man, as some people argue.
Curtis' verses and Joy Division's novel music will always be here. Ever since the band's rename to New Order, there have been numerous musicians who were influenced by them. Also, there have been others who have covered J.D's songs with a few being successful at doing that.
On that previous post on Ian Curtis we had uploaded a compilation made of Italian artists who covered some Joy Division songs. You know that the link didn't stay up for too long-but now it's back on. Today, we have another Joy Division related compilation, this time including twelve bands from Norway. Some of them like Beyond Dawn and Theatre of Tragedy are better known. Despite fame or success, these bands transmit their own interesting versions of (now) classic Joy Division songs. Enjoy.

Less Words/More Music Issue #7

Βρισκόμαστε στην έβδομη ενότητα του "Less Words/More Music" και ασχολούμαστε με διαφορετικούς ήχους, κυρίως προερχόμενους από τις Η.Π.Α. και την Αυστραλία. Έχουν περάσει περίπου δύο μήνες χωρίς καμία ανάρτηση. Έχουν υπάρξει πολλές αλλαγές τριγύρω από τότε. Διατηρούμε την ελπίδα αλλά και την επιφύλαξη πως οι αλλαγές στην Ελλάδα θα είναι για το καλύτερο.
We're on the seventh issue of Less Words/More Music and we're dealing with a variety of sounds, mainly from the U.S. and Australia. It's been a couple of months since we haven't posted anything. There have been a lot of changes around since our last post. We hope that the changes in Greece will be for the better despite any reservations we might have.


1. Clay Idols: Every Day Starts Like This mLP (Glass Records-1988)
Οι Clay Idols έρχονται από το Los Angeles (ΗΠΑ) και το μίνι LP "Every Day Starts Like This" αποτελεί την πρώτη τους κυκλοφορία στην Glass Records το 1988. Ο ήχος τους είναι εναλλακτικός με γλυκά και ακουστικά κομμάτια. Όμως εκτός από τις πληροφορίες που συνοδεύουν το δίσκο, δεν γνωρίζουμε τίποτε άλλο για τους Clay Idols.
ENG: The Clay Idols come from Los Angeles, U.S.A., and "Every Day Starts Like This" mLP is their first release on Glass Records in 1988. Their music is alternative rock style with mellow and acoustic songs. Apart from the Glass Records release notes, we haven't found anything else on the band.

2. The Shy Strangers: Indian Name mLP (Pravda Records-1986)
Άλλο ένα συγκρότημα από τα Μεσοδυτικά των Η.Π.Α, οι The Shy Strangers με μία και μοναδική κυκλοφορία στην Pravda Records αυτό το μίνι LP "Indian Name" του 1986. Το ύφος τους είναι εναλλακτικό και ελαφρώς νεο-ψυχεδελικό και θυμίζουν παλιούς R.E.M. Και πάλι, χωρίς άλλες πληροφορίες.
ENG: Here's another U.S. band from the Midwest. "Indian Name" is The Shy Strangers' sole release on Pravda Records. They have an alternative rock and neo-psychedelic outlook and they sound similar to early R.E.M. Again, no further information available. Enjoy.

3. Olympic Sideburns: I've Been Away 12'' (New Rose-1985)

Οι Olympic Sideburns αποτελούν ένα σημαντικό τμήμα της Αυστραλέζικης garage-punk σκηνής και έρχονται από την Μελβούρνη. Το 12 ιντσο "I've Been Away" δινόταν δωρεάν μαζί με το πρώτο ομώνυμο άλμπουμ του συγκροτήματος. Η Γαλλική New Rose το κυκλοφόρησε ξεχωριστά το 1985. Επίσης, περιέχει και μια καταπληκτική διασκευή στο "7 And 7 Is" των Love.
ENG: The Olympic Sideburns comprise a seminal part of Australia's garage-punk rock scene and they come from Melbourne. "I've Been Away" twelve-inch single was given free with their first omonymous LP. The French label New Rose has released this 12'' separately in 1985. Includes a great cover on Love's "7 And 7 Is", too. Enjoy!

4. Vicious Kites: Sold mLP (Fire and Hope-1988)
Άλλη μία Αυστραλέζικη μπάντα για σήμερα, οι Vicious Kites που προέρχονται από την πόλη Brisbane και το στυλ τους είναι  new wave/post punk. Αφού πρώτα κυκλοφόρησαν δύο ενδιαφέροντα 7ιντσα, έβγαλαν και το μίνι άλμπουμ "Sold" to 1988. Συγκεκριμένα το "Sold" δεν αναφέρεται στο Discogs. Ευχαριστούμε τον φίλο "ForeignAffairs" που μας έδωσε το μίνι LP στην ψηφιακή του μορφή.
ENG: Another Australian band for today, Vicious Kites come from Brisbane and their style is new wave/post punk. They had already released two 7'' interesting singles by the time they released "Sold" mLP in 1988. Apparently, there's no info on Discogs about "Sold" mLP. Thanks to "ForeignAffairs", a friend of ours who sent it to us in digital form.

Less Words/More Music Issue #4

1. Whipping Boy: Whipping Boy 12'' e.p. (Cheree Records-1990) 

Οι Whipping Boy έρχονται από το Δουβλίνο (Ιρλανδία) και πράγματι είναι το συγκρότημα που έκανε μεγάλη εμπορική επιτυχία με το single "We Don't Need Nobody Else" το 1995. Το e.p. που παρουσιάζουμε εδώ κυκλοφόρησε το 1990 και αποτυπώνει τις προφανείς επιρροές από τους Velvet Underground, τους Sonic Youth και τους The Fall. Στο ομώνυμο αυτό e.p. ο ήχος των Whipping Boy προσομοιάζει με ένα κιθαριστικό τείχος στο οποίο ενυπάρχουν διάσπαρτοι ψυχεδελικοί χρωματισμοί, οι οποίοι είναι κάπως πιο ακατέργαστοι σε σχέση με τους The Jesus And Mary Chain που είναι της ίδιας εποχής. Καλή ακρόαση!
ENG: Irish band Whipping Boy come from Dublin and they are the very same group that made a success with the single "We Don't Need Nobody Else" in 1995. Despite that posterior success, the earlier e.p. we present today was released in 1990 and apparently shows how the band was heavily influenced by The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth and The Fall. In the same titled e.p. the music of the W.B. seems like a guitar-wall-of-sound imprinted with scattered psychedelic configurations. Altogether, their sound is somewhat crude related to similar bands of the period such as The Jesus And Mary Chain. Enjoy!

2. Venus In Furs: Love Lies 12'' e.p. (Backs Records-1986)
Οι Venus In Furs είναι λίγο-πολύ γνωστοί στους οπαδούς της new wave/post punk αλλά και στους αναγνώστες των Δέκα Χιλιάδων Ματιών. Είναι το μουσικό όχημα  μέσω του οποίου οι Emery Times και Skot Lucy εξέφρασαν τις εκπληκτικές μουσικές τους ανησυχίες απαριθμώντας συνολικά πέντε ολοκληρωμένα άλμπουμ και αρκετά singles και e.ps. από 1983 έως 1990. Το κομμάτι "Love Lies" προέρχεται από το τρίτο τους LP "Real Moral Fibre" του 1986 και είναι ένα τυπικό δείγμα του ύφους των V.I.F. Για τους μη γνώστες, ο ήχος τους ακόμη και σε γρήγορους ρυθμούς είναι μελαγχολικός και υπνωτικός και σχεδόν εθιστικός. Καλή ακρόαση!
ENG: Venus In Furs are well known among the fans of new wave/post punk and the readers of Ten Thousand Eyes. The main members of the band, Emery Times and Skot Lucy expressed their musical intellect through V.I.F., counting a total of five LP's and several singles and e.ps from 1983 to 1990. "Love Lies" is a typical song from V.I.F. and comes from the third album "Real Moral Fibre" of 1986. For those who aren't familiar with V.I.F., their sound is melancholic and hypnotic, almost addictive even at fast tempos. Enjoy!

3. The Wasp Factory: Bait 12'' e.p. (Midnight Music-1989)
Από τον πολυποίκιλο κατάλογο της βρετανικής Midnight Music έχουμε τους The Wasp Factory και το ιδιότροπο e.p. τους "Bait". Για τους The Wasp Factory δεν έχουμε βρει απολύτως καμία πληροφορία. Εικάζουμε πως είναι Βρετανοί και πως ενδεχομένως πήραν το όνομα τους από την ομότιτλη νουβέλα του -επίσης Βρετανού- Iain Banks που κυκλοφόρησε το 1984. Η μουσική πάντως των Wasp Factory είναι ένα είδος πειραματικής post punk.
ENG: Out of the varied roster of the british label Midnight Music here's The Wasp Factory and their cranky "Bait" e.p. We haven't unearthed any info on them. We guess they are British and most probably got their name after Iain Banks' same titled novel of 1984 release. Now for the band's music style, they experiment with post punk throughout. Enjoy!

Korova Milkbar: Super Sonic Death Trip mLP 1988, KMM Records

Για πρώτη φορά ακούσαμε τους Σουηδούς Korova Milkbar στο ελληνικό κρατικό ραδιόφωνο κάπου στα 1990, και από τότε δεν έχουμε ξεχάσει το όνομα του συγκροτήματος που μας έκανε τεράστια εντύπωση. Όταν μάλιστα συνειδητοποιήσαμε πως το όνομα αυτό προέρχεται από τις σελίδες του "A Clockwork Orange" ("Κουρδιστό Πορτοκάλι") του Anthony Burgess, ήταν δύσκολο να αγνοήσουμε όλες τις συμπτώσεις.
Η μουσική των Korova Milkbar που μας κέντρισε αρχικά το ενδιαφέρον είναι δυναμική και συνάμα ατμοσφαιρική, είναι εν ολίγοις ένας συναρπαστικός συνδυασμός new wave/post punk, garage, ψυχεδέλειας και space rock ζυμωμένα σε ένα δυναμικό σύνολο έξι τραγουδιών με τον υπέρτατο τίτλο "Super Sonic Death Trip" δικής τους κυκλοφορίας έν έτει 1988.
Από το θαυμάσιο "Happy" που ξεκινά το μίνι LP, οι ΚΜ επιδεικνύουν την επιβλητική φύση της μουσικής τους. Ο ξεχωριστός τους ήχος μοιάζει βελούδινος, όμως είναι τραχύς και ηλεκτρικός, με τα φωνητικά να παραπέμπουν σε κάτι μεταξύ Peter Murphy ή Iggy Pop, αποδίδοντας όσο "παρανοϊκά" γίνεται την προσωπική θεματολογία των στίχων. Το καταιγιστικό "Downtown Beirut (X-City)", το γεμάτο "Phoenix (Arizona)", το "Inner Space Sightseeing" που θυμίζει Stooges και το "5 O' Clock Soda" που ανεβαίνει σιγά σιγά -πραγματικά το ένα καλύτερο από το άλλο- αποδεικνύονται άψογα ως συνθέσεις και ως εκτελέσεις. Στο τέλος, βρίσκεται το κομμάτι που μας έκανε να ερωτευτούμε το δίσκο και στη συνέχεια να τον αναζητήσουμε, το "Psychotonic Love Reaction", στροβιλίζεται ηλεκτρισμένο και ύπουλο, έτοιμο να συνεπάρει και να στοιχειώσει κάθε ακροατή.
Συνολικά, αυτό το αριστούργημα διατηρεί τα ποιοτικά χαρακτηριστικά του από την αρχή ως το τέλος, ως μια εθιστική επανάληψη στην αιωνιότητα. Κοντολογίς, είναι ένας δίσκος που δημιουργήθηκε για να αρέσει, επειδή ό,τι σας συναρπάζει μπορεί να βρίσκεται εδώ. Καλή ακρόαση σε όλους!

ENG: The first time we ever listened to the music of the Swedish band Korova Milkbar was on the greek state-owned radio in the early 90's. We got so impressed that it's been impossible to forget the band's name especially after we found out that it was inspired by Anthony Burgess' novel "A Clockwork Orange". Then we figured that it involved too much to ignore.
The music of Korova Milkbar is both powerful and atmospheric, in short it is a combination of new wave/post punk, garage, psychedelia and space rock melted into an ensemble of six songs entitled "Super Sonic Death Trip", and self-released in 1988.
The magnificent "Happy" introduces the imposing nature of KM's music. Even if they sound catchy, they are actually quite electrifying and rough. In addition to the music, the lyric themes deal with everyday and personal paranoia sung by a voice which is reminiscent to that of Peter Murphy and/or Iggy Pop. The raging "Downtown Beirut (X-City)", the dense "Phoenix (Arizona)", the Stooges-like "Inner Space Sightseeing" and the slow-building "5 O' Clock Soda" prove to be flawless in every aspect. Finally, there's the song that made us fall for this record at first; the sneaky, electrifying "Psychotonic Love Reaction", a song that overwhelms and haunts the listener.
Overall, "Super Sonic Death Trip" is an mini masterpiece from beginning to end; it keeps playing in your head like an addictive repetition to eternity. In short, this is a record that was made to like, as it is composed of elements that may lift your spirit. Have a good listening to it, everyone!

Drums and Stories: The Friendly Singer Said 1996, F.M. Records

Σήμερα σας παρουσιάζουμε τους Drums & Stories, ένα σχήμα από την Θεσσαλονίκη με δύο μόνο κυκλοφορίες στο ενεργητικό τους, ένα e.p. με τίτλο "The Critical Dream Path" του 1993 και τη μεγάλη τους κυκλοφορία το "The Friendly Singer Said" του 1996 στην F.M. Records. Εκείνη την εποχή η πλέον πολυεθνική F.M. έκανε μια προσπάθεια να προσεγγίσει συγκροτήματα και κοινό από το χώρο της εναλλακτικής rock σκηνής-προφανώς για εμπορικούς λόγους. Έκανε μια συμφωνία για επανακυκλοφορία και διανομή του υλικού της θρυλικής Creep (από εκείνη την συνεργασία έχουμε ανεβάσει το πρώτο άλμπουμ των Villa 21 και την συλλογή Return of the Creeps). Οι Drums & Stories ήταν ένα από αυτά τα συγκροτήματα που ωφελήθηκαν από αυτήν την προσπάθεια.
Ας μιλήσουμε όμως για τη μουσική...Ο ήχος των D&S είναι αρκετά μελωδικός, αιθέριος και μελαγχολικός. Οι δέκα άψογες συνθέσεις είναι αποτέλεσμα της μουσικής χημείας μεταξύ των μελών του σχήματος καθώς και καλοδουλεμένων στίχων που μιλούν για έρωτα, θάνατο και καθημερινές σχέσεις -μερικές φορές μοιάζουν Καβαφικοί, ιδιαίτερα στο "Senses Don't". Η μουσική που πλαισιώνει τους όμορφους στίχους είναι κυρίως ακουστική με ηλεκτρικές εξάρσεις εδώ και εκεί. Επίσης, τα μελωδικά φωνητικά είναι ένα πλεονέκτημα που προσθέτει επιπλέον στην ατμόσφαιρα των συνθέσεων. Οπωσδήποτε τα τραγούδια που θα σας αποτυπωθούν αμέσως είναι τα "The Tree of Youth", "Senses Don't", και "A Dream I Never Had" και "Embrace", όχι πως τα υπόλοιπα απογοητεύουν.
Φίλες και φίλοι ελπίζουμε να απολαύσετε τον "Φιλικό Τραγουδιστή" και τους Drums & Stories. Είναι ένα σχετικά "ελαφρύ" αλλά απολαυστικό άκουσμα για αυτή την εποχή. Θα ξανασυναντηθούμε τον Σεπτέμβριο. Έως τότε ευχόμαστε όσοι είστε σε διακοπές, καλή ξεκούραση.

ENG: Today's post is about Drums & Stories, an alternative music formation coming from the Thessaloniki, Greece. They have released an e.p. in 1993 entitled "The Critical Dream Path" and a long play cd entitled "The Friendly Singer Said" on F.M. Records in 1996. At that period F.M. Records was in effort of approaching the alternative greek rock scene, both bands and fans (apparently for commercial reasons). The label also agreed to re-release the material of legendary Creep Records (regarding the aforementioned re-releases we have already posted the Villa 21 "A Ghost on the Move" and VA "Return of the Creeps" sometime ago). Drums & Stories were also benefited and thus had the chance to release their material via a large label that F.M. Records was at the time.
Let us talk about the music now. Drums & Stories are melodious, ethereal and melancholic at the same time. The good chemistry among the members of the group resulted in making ten flawless songs about love, death, and everyday human relations. The lyrics have got a poetic edge, at times similar to Cavafy's themes, especially in "Senses Don't". Moreover, the music is appropriate; mostly acoustic with random electric outbreaks here and there. Also, the melodic vocals prove to be a great advantage too, as they help make the atmosphere more effective. Absolutely some of the songs you'll enjoy and familiarize with are "The Tree of Youth", "Senses Don't", "A Dream I Never Had" and "Embrace". The rest of the songs aren't dissapointing either.
We hope you will enjoy the "Friendly Singer" and Drums & Stories. They are certainly a light-weight listen for August, too. We will 'meet' again in September. Until then, we hope you'll get lots of rest especially if you are on vacation.

Outland: Demo 1996 (self produced)

Οι Outland ήταν ένα indie συγκρότημα που δημιουργήθηκε στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1990. Η σύνθεση του συγκροτήματος το 1996 ήταν Τάκης "traveller" Κορορος (ακουστική και ηλεκτρική κιθάρα), Ντέμης Μπίθας (ηλεκτρικό μπάσσο), Δημήτρης Δερβεντλής (τύμπανα), Οδυσσέας Ζαφειροπουλος (ακουστικό και ηλεκτρικό βιολί), Ορέστης Ζαφειρόπουλος (ακουστικό τσέλο), και Ειρήνη Maggel-Συμεωνίδου (στίχοι και φωνητικά). Είχαν μία συμμετοχή στην συλλογή του φανζίν "Σκιές του Β23" : "Fragmenta IV" το 1992 με το κομμάτι "Still".

Το ντέμο που παρουσιάζουμε σήμερα, κυκλοφόρησε το 1996, τότε μάλιστα είχαν κάνει και μια παρουσίαση στον ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό Ρόδον FM 94,4. Η μουσική τους μπορεί να χαρακτηριστεί ως alternative rock με αρκετά new wave στοιχεία. Περιέχει τρία πανέμορφα κομμάτια που αποτελούνται από ακουστικά και ηλεκτρικά μέρη, και φυσικά συνοδεύονται από τα χαρακτηριστικά και πανέμορφα αλλά και μελαγχολικά φωνητικά της Ειρήνης. Απολαύστε τη γαλήνη που αποπνέει το "Fantasy", αναμετρήστε τον Χρόνο που χτυπάει με το ρυθμό του "Time", και τέλος, αισθανθείτε την αγωνία που υποβόσκει στο "Last Chance". Υποθέτουμε πως η παραγωγή θα ήταν δική τους, ωραία θα ήταν να υπήρχε συνέχεια, αλλά δυστυχώς για δικούς τους λόγους, το συγκρότημα έμεινε ανενεργό από κει και μετά. Έκτοτε μόνο για την Ειρήνη Συμεωνίδου γνωρίζουμε πως συμμετέχει στους Terra Libera, ένα επίσης αξιόλογο συγκρότημα (για τους Terra Libera μπορείτε να βρείτε πληροφορίες στη σελίδα τους στο myspace).

Outland were an indie band activated c.a. 1990. By 1996 the band were: Takis "traveller" Kororos (acoustic, electric & lead guitars), Demis Mpithas (electric bass), Dimitris Derventlis (drums), Odysseas Zafeiropoulos (acoustic & electric violin), Orestis Zafeiropoulos (acoustic cello) and Irene Maggel-Simeonidou (lyrics, vocals). They participated in "Fragmanta IV" LP compilation of the "Shades of B-23" fanzine with their song "Still".

The demo that we are presenting to you today came out in 1996, they presented it on air through Rodon FM 94,4 radio station. Their music style is alternative rock with plenty of new wave elements. The demo consists of three acoustic and electric songs ornamented by Irene's beautiful and melancholic voice. Enjoy the serenity of "Fantasy", count the time ticking with "Time", and finally feel the lurking suspence of "Last Chance". We suppose that they did the production themselves, and since they had potential it'd be nice to have a continuation, however they remained inactive ever since. Only for Irene Symeonidou we know that she's part of Terra Libera which are a new notable group (Terra Libera info and samples here).
