The You And What Army Faction: Fixx cdr Self-release 2009 + Vent e.p., 2012 More Mars + Silk 7'', GAB Productions 2012

Σήμερα θα ασχοληθούμε με ένα καινούργιο συγκρότημα, πράγμα που δεν κάνουμε συχνά μέσω του blog μας, αφού συνεχώς και ακαταπαύστως βρισκόμαστε στο παρελθόν. Αφού λάβαμε το ενημερωτικό e-mail της ανεξάρτητης δισκογραφικής GAB Productions σχετικά με ένα νέο σχήμα τους The You And What Army Faction από την Αθήνα και τη κυκλοφορία τους σε 7'' με τίτλο "Silk". Έπειτα ακολούθησε και ένα mail του τραγουδιστή του συγκροτήματος και αναγνώστη του blog μας, που μας έκανε γνωστό ότι το σχήμα αυτό έχει κι άλλες κυκλοφορίες. Ο Dead C. (ή Raggedy Man) του οποίου το προσωπικό blog, μας έστειλε και τα links (soundcloud, bandcamp, κτλ) όπου και ακούσαμε μεγάλο μέρος από την ενδιαφέρουσα δουλειά των The You And What Army Faction. Το εν λόγω σχήμα δεν κάνει καμία εξαίρεση στις επιρροές και τις μουσικές εμπνεύσεις οι οποίες έρχονται από την σκοτεινή πλευρά του 80 και του 90. Μιλάμε για ιστορικά συγκροτήματα όπως Swans, Sonic Youth, The Fall, αλλά και τους πειραματικούς This Heat. Δεν θα αφήναμε απ' έξω τους Clock DVA, τους Cabaret Voltaire, ακόμα και τους Einsturzende Neubauten.

Όντως ο ήχος τους παραπέμπει λιγότερο ή περισσότερο στα παραπάνω συγκροτήματα. Εμείς θα τους περιγράφαμε ως πειραματικούς, σκοτεινούς και χαοτικούς, με ύφος που παραπέμπει κατευθείαν στην παράνοια της εκβιομηχανοποιημένης-απάνθρωπης καθημερινότητας. Είναι αρκετά ηλεκτρικοί ώστε να είναι φορτισμένοι και πάρα πολύ καλοί στο να δημιουργούν ατμόσφαιρα, συγκεκριμένα αυτήν της σύγχρονης παρακμής και αποσύνθεσης. Θα θέλαμε να τους δούμε στη σκηνή να δημιουργούν, και γιατί όχι, να αυτοσχεδιάζουν αποδομώντας και αναπαριστώντας εικόνες και ήχους από την καθημερινή παράνοια. Οι κυκλοφορίες τους περιλαμβάνουν το άλμπουμ "Fixx" (Νοέμβριος του 2009, self-release), μέσα στον Μάρτιο του 2012 ήρθε το e.p. "Vent" (σε cdr από την More Mars) και αργότερα τον Ιούλιο του 2012 το νεότευκτο 7-ιντσο "Silk" (από την ΓΑΒ Productions).
Το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ "Fixx" μας έκανε την μεγαλύτερη εντύπωση αφού αποτελεί και την εναρκτήρια κυκλοφορία και επαφή με το ευρύ κοινό. Στο "Fixx" διατηρούν ατόφια την "εφηβική" δυναμική και ενέργεια, όμως "προδίδουν" και τις μουσικές επιρροές τους. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, ανάμεσα στις παραπάνω συγκαταλέγονται το μπάσσο και η κιθάρα των πρώιμων Sonic Youth, τα φωνητικά και οι industrial αναζητήσεις μαζί με τα επιβλητικά φωνητικά του Michael Gira και των Swans. Μηδενός εξαιρουμένου όλα τα τραγούδια είναι χτισμένα πάνω σε ένα βασικό post punk κορμό, από όπου εξορμούν ένα προς ένα τα κλαδιά (ή πλοκάμια αν προτιμάτε) προς κάθε κατεύθυνση. Βέβαια αυτό που ακούμε εν τέλει είναι οι ίδιοι οι The You And What Army Faction που επιβάλλονται πάνω σε κάθε επιρροή και αναδύονται στην δική τους επιφάνεια... έστω και αν αυτό που περιγράφουν είναι ο βρωμερός και γλιστερός βούρκος ή ένα συναίσθημα-ορμή-παρέκκλιση από και προς την αυτοκαταστροφή. Συναισθήματα όπως η ενοχή, η ζήλεια, το μίσος έχουν την τιμητική τους στο "Fixx". Ένας κόσμος τόσο σημερινός και ταυτόχρονα βγαλμένος από τα σκοτεινά υπόγεια του Ντοστογιέβσκι, τους ιλλιγιώδεις πύργους του Κάφκα και από τα μιαρά υπόγεια του Ε. Α. Πόε αναδύεται από την πρώτη νότα. Οι ρυθμοί είναι αργοί και βασανιστικοί σαν κάτι να σέρνεται και να στοιχειώνει τη μουσική. Είναι ό,τι καλύτερο για soundtrack στον χειρότερο μας εφιάλτη, δηλαδή την πραγματικότητα. Το πρώτο άλμπουμ γιορτάζει το θάνατο και την παρακμή, άραγε να υπάρχει τίποτε πέρα από κει για τους The You And What Army Faction;
Ακούγοντας και τις πιο πρόσφατες κυκλοφορίες "Vent" και "Silk" του 2012 ανακαλύψαμε πως ναι, υπάρχει κάτι πέρα από εκεί...Καταλαβαίνει κανείς πως κάτι έχει αλλάξει στον ήχο τους και πως έχουν ωριμάσει σημαντικά, πράγμα που έχει ως αποτέλεσμα πιο οργανωμένες συνθέσεις, και προσεγμένη παραγωγή χωρίς όμως να έχει αλλάξει ουσιαστικά το σκοτεινό αντικείμενο της μουσικής τους. Επιβάλλουν ακόμα πιο ονειρικά/εφιαλτικά ηχοτοπία τα οποία στην πιο φωτεινή τους έκφανση ζωγραφίζουν με ψυχεδελικό τρόπο και με τις πιο σκοτεινές νότες αγγίζοντας την noise-industrial. Ο ήχος είναι πιο παγερός από ποτέ, εστιάζει στο απόλυτο κενό της ύπαρξης και την κατάπτωση του μοντέρνου εαυτού μας, μοιάζει με ένα υποβλητικό "θόρυβο" που εκπέμπει απευθείας από το υποσυνείδητο. Μας άρεσαν πολύ τα "When It Comes to Adultery, I Am my Own Genre" από το "Vent" και "Drag What's Left of my Body in the Mud" από το "Silk". Ελπίζουμε πως δώσαμε μια γενική εικόνα της μουσικής τους και της φιλοσοφίας που την διακατέχει, έτσι ώστε να τους ανακαλύψετε και εσείς. Δίνουμε για download μόνο τα "Fixx" και "Vent" σε ένα αρχείο, γιατί το "Silk" βρίσκεται ήδη στα δισκοπωλεία.

ENG: Today we are going to talk about a rather new band; we've never done this before, as you may've noticed we're constanly referring to the past. After receiving a newsletter from GAB Productions label about a new band from Athens called The You And What Army Faction and their brand new 7'' release entitled "Silk", we received another e-mail from the singer/leader (Raggedy Man) of the band who happens to be following our blog for sometime now. He informed us about some older releases and sent us links to soundcloud and bandcamp sites where we were able to listen to more of their interesting material. The You And What Army Faction were greatly influenced by the darkest side of the 80's and 90's music. Some of those influences include The Swans, The Sonic Youth, The Fall, This Heat, Clock DVA, Cabaret Voltaire, even Einsturzende Neubauten.
Indeed, The You And What Army Faction's music reflects on the aforementioned bands. We would describe  them as being dark, experimental, chaotic, depicting on the modern inhuman industrialised paranoia. They are so electric as long as they need to be electrified with the ability to create the atmospherics of modern social/psychological decline. We'd love to see them perform on stage, improvising, decomposing and reenacting images and sounds from everyday insanity. Except from "Silk" 7'' released on July 2012 they have also released the full length cdr "Fixx" (self-release) in November 2009 and the e.p. "Vent" (cdr on 'More Mars' label).
To be honest, the first album was a striking surprise to us because we were able to experience their early "adolescent" vitality. Their influences are coming clear throughout the whole album. Specifically, you can hear the early Sonic Youth bass style merging with the vocal style and industrial experimentations of Michael Gira and the Swans. All the songs are basic post punk with branches-extensions (or tentacles if you like) stretching towards every direction. Finally, The You And What Army Faction impose upon their influences and therefore they come up crystal clear with their own music. They still depict on the human psyche as being a slimy sludge expressing emotion-urge-deviation; hence, a two way street to self destruction. Guilt, Jealousy, Hatred are dominant throughout the album "Fixx". It looks like they have created a world similar to our present time and simultanesously very similar to the dark vaults of Dostoyevsky, the vertiginous towers of Kafka and the abhorrent vaults of E.A. Poe. In most if not all the songs, the rhythm is slow paced as if something crawls and haunts into the music. It coud be the best soundtrack for our worst nightmares; reality, that is. In a nutshell, this is what the first album about. Besides that, is there anything else further beyond for the music of The You And What Army Faction?
After listening to both releases of 2012, "Vent" and "Silk" we realised that there is more about them. Their music has evolved and matured a lot, resulting in well-arranged compositions and flawless production, however, the dark object of music remains the same.The band enforce dreamish/nightmarish soundscapes which in their brightest version seem to approach a noise/industrial style in a dark psychedelic manner. The sound is colder than before, retains focus on the absolute nothingness of our existence and the decadence of our contemporary self. Overall, it sounds as if a low level noise transmits straight from our subconscious. Some of the highlights are "When It Comes to Adultery, I Am my Own Genre" from "Vent" and "Drag What's Left of my Body in the Mud" from "Silk". We are hoping to give you a clear idea of their musical philosophy so that you can get to know their music. Since "Silk" is still being sold, we have uploaded "Fixx" and "Vent" only (one file).

The Flowers of Romance: Love Means Death 12'' e.p. 1992, Wipe Out Records

"'Ερωτας σημαίνει Θάνατος..." Με αυτή τη δήλωση ο Μ. Πούγουνας και οι Flowers of Romance ξεκίνησαν το 1992 τη δεύτερη κυκλοφορία τους ξανά μέσω της Wipe Out Records. Πρόκειται για το "Love Means Death" ένα 12-ιντσο e.p. με τρία καταπληκτικά κομμάτια. που βρίσκει τους Flowers of Romance ένα σκαλοπάτι πιο πάνω από το ντεμπούτο τους "Dorian Grey" του 1990 (ανάρτηση Ιουνίου 2012). Ήδη ακούγονται πιο ώριμοι με κατασταλαγμένο -ολόδικό- τους gothic rock ήχο και την ικανότητα να γράφουν τραγούδια-σταθμούς και ήδη έχει γίνει αλλαγή μελών αφού ο Δημήτρης Μπέης αντικατέστησε τους Πλάτωνα Παπαδημητρίου και Αχιλλέα Γερομόσχο στις κιθάρες. Η αρχή στο νέο e.p. γίνεται με ένα τραγούδι-σταθμός της gothic rock, το ομώνυμο "Love Means Death" που αποτυπώνει με ποιητικό τρόπο την ρομαντική άποψη πως ο έρωτας συνδέεται άμεσα με τον θάνατο. Ό,τι θα μπορούσε να γραφτεί σε σελίδες επί σελίδων περί αυτού, οι Flowers of Romance κατάφεραν να το πούν σε ένα τραγούδι σχεδόν 5 λεπτών. Το e.p. περιλαμβάνει άλλα δύο εξίσου δυνατά κομμάτια, εκ των οποίων το ένα είναι μια κα-τα-πλη-κτι-κή διασκευή στο πιο "μαύρο" τραγούδι που έγραψαν οι Rolling Stones, το "Paint it Black", δοσμένο με δραματική δεινότητα και μελαγχολικό τόνο. Οι διασκευές δεν είναι κάτι εύκολο, αλλά οι F.O.R. φαίνεται πως εντρύφησαν στην ουσία αυτού του κομματιού, και η συγκεκριμένη είναι ίσως η καλύτερη διασκευή που έχει γίνει από gothic rock συγκρότημα. Τέλος, το τελευταίο κομμάτι του e.p. είναι το "Autumn Kids" (βρίσκεται και στη συλλογή "Wipe Out Presents 12 Raw Greek Groups" της Wipe Out) είναι άλλο ένα διαμάντι, ένα τραγούδι που δείχνει την έμπνευση αλλά και τη ικανότητα να ολοκληρώνουν άψογες συνθέσεις. Συνολικά, το 12-ιντσο "Love Means Death" είναι μια ολοκληρωμένη (όχι σε ποσότητα, αλλά σε ποιότητα) και καλοδουλεμένη κυκλοφορία που αν μη τι άλλο προϊδεάζει τον ακροατή για την μετέπειτα δισκογραφική πορεία των Flowers of Romance. Καλή ακρόαση!

ENG: "Love Means Death..." A statement by Mike Pougounas and The Flowers of Romance that kickstarted their second release; a three song 12'' e.p. in 1992 through Wipe Out Records. The Flowers of Romance have moved a level up above 1990's "Dorian Grey" in both composition and quality terms. They have also become more mature and solidified their trade mark sound. In addition, Dimitris Beys has taken over the guitars from Platonas Papadimitriou and Achilleas Geromoschos. The outstanding song "Love Means Death" opens this e.p.with a poetic reference to the romantic idea that love is directly related to death. Pages over pages could have been written on the subject, however The F.O.R. have managed to elaborate this notion in an anthem of less than five minutes long.
Furthermore, this e.p. contains another two great songs. The first is a cover of Roling Stones' "blackest" tune, "Paint It Black", given with such dramatic skill and melancholy tone at the same time. Suppose that covering another band's song is a difficult task, but The Flowers of Romance seem to have indulged into the essence of this particular song; perhaps the best cover of "Paint It Black" made by a gothic rock band. The final song of this landmark e.p. is "Autumn Kids" which has also been included in the Wipe Out 1988 compilation "Wipe Out Presents 12 Raw Greek Groups" and it is definitely another gem that shows inspiration and mastery in putting through some flawless songs. Overall, "Love Means Death" 12'' e.p. is a full and qualitative release that absolutely presages the band's future releases. Have a good listening to this one, friends!

Jih: The Shadow to Fall 1986, Jungle Records/Breadth of Vision Records

Το "The Shadow to Fall" από τους Jih είναι ένα από τα άλμπουμ που μας έκαναν ιδιαίτερη εντύπωση και το ανακαλύψαμε μέσω των αναρτήσεων του φίλου 'bx-59cppw' στο δικό του blog από τον Ιούνιο του 2010. Τα περισσότερα link στο εν λόγω blog είναι πια ανενεργά και είπαμε να προσφέρουμε ένα φρέσκο rip. Βρήκαμε κάποιες πληροφορίες για τους Jih στο retrodundee.blogspot. Φαίνεται πως βασικός πυρήνας του συγκροτήματος είναι ο Βρετανός Grant McNally (τραγουδιστής και βασικός συνθέτης) με δορυφόρους διάφορους μουσικούς μεταξύ των άλλων και μέλη των Associates. Φαίνεται δε πως υπάρχει ακόμη στενότερη σχέση με τους προαναφερθέντες γιατί ο  McNally έχει συνεργαστεί αρκετά στενά με τον Billy MacKenzie σε τραγούδια των Associates και το αντίστροφο. Το γεγονός είναι πως οι Jih υπάρχουν από το 1983 και έχουν κυκλοφορήσει εκτός από το LP του 1986 επιπλέον τρία 12'' ep από το 1985 έως το 1988. Πάντως το "The Shadow to Fall" κάνει αίσθηση με το πρώτο άκουσμα, έχει μια φρεσκάδα σαν να γράφτηκε μόλις χθες αλλά μοιάζει επίσης σαν να βρίσκεται κρυμμένη κάποια new wave σούπερ-μπάντα πίσω από το όνομα "Jih" γιατί κάθε ένα από τα τραγούδια σίγουρα θα σας θυμίσει κάτι, ίσως συγκεκριμένο (όπως τα "Big Blue Ocean" και "The Gift" θυμίζουν εμπορικούς Echo & the Bunnymen) ή και κάτι ακαθόριστο αλλά πολύ οικείο. Είναι πράγματι άξιο απορίας γιατί δεν έγιναν πιο γνωστοί. Πέρα από την προφανή ευκολία του ακούσματος θα βρείτε αρκετές από τις συνθέσεις μοναδικές με αποκορύφωμα το ορχηστρικό "As U Fall" με τον καταπληκτικό καταιγισμό κιθάρας και ντραμς. Επίσης υπάρχουν αναφορές στον David Bowie (ή μήπως στους Associates;) με το "Closer Now". Επίσης, τα "This is my House" και "Let the Sun Beat Down on Me" θα ακουστούν αρκετά οικεία - σαν θολές μνήμες από ένα μακρινό σας παρελθόν. Ευχόμαστε καλή ακρόαση!

ENG: The LP "The Shadow to Fall" by Jih is one of the albums that surprised us while discovering bx59cppw.blogspot back in June 2010. Since 'bx-59cppw' is a friend who provides us every now and then with some material and most of the links at bx59cppw blogspot are down, we decided to offer you a "fresh" digital rip of this LP and a fresh look, too. Most of the info concerning Jih came from retrodundee.blogspot and it's worth a visit. Apparently, Jih is the one-man-band musician Grant McNally, who with a little help from musician friends like Billy MacKenzie and other 'Associates' members maintained this band. There seems to be an even closer relation to The Associates since McNally and MacKenzie have written songs for each other's bands. In addition, we must say that Jih are an experienced band that dates back to 1983 and have totally four releases including this LP. In any case, one may notice the uniqueness of the "The Shadow to Fall" LP from the start, because it sounds fresh and modern and because it sounds as perfect as if it was composed by a 'new wave super group'. Most of the songs are reminiscent of the 80's period and may sound extremely familiar ("Big Blue Ocean" and "The Gift" may remind you of  commercial-era Echo & the Bunnymen). A question is raised, why didn't they ever become famous? Despite of the familiarity and the Bunnymen-like stimulation there's more to this LP as there are songs such as the astonishing instrumental "As U Fall" where you will definitely enjoy the raging guitar and drums. There are also light referencess to David Bowie (or to The Associates if you prefer) in the song "Closer Now". Also, "This is my House" and "Let the Sun Beat Down on Me" will make a familiar impression - the way memories echo through the hazy and distant past. Have a good listening to this one!

Blue Aeroplanes: Bop Art 1983, Party Records

Οι Blue Aeroplanes από το Bristol της Μεγ. Βρετανίας είναι περισσότερο γνωστοί ως ένα πολύ καλό indie/alternative rock σχήμα που μεσουράνησε κυρίως τη δεκαετία του 1990. Βέβαια το συγκρότημα εξακολουθεί ακόμη να υπάρχει και να κυκλοφορεί καινούργιο υλικό. Όταν όμως κυκλοφόρησαν το ντεμπούτο τους με τίτλο "Bop Art" εν έτει 1983 δεν είχαν αυτόν τον γνώριμο (και κάπως mainstream) ήχο. Θα μπορούσαμε να τους περιγράψουμε ως αρκετά τολμηρούς σε εκείνα τα πρώτα βήματα, ενδεχομένως δεκτικούς σε ηχητικούς πειραματισμούς. Ίσως η πρώτη τους σύνθεση που περιείχε και μέλη των Art Objects να συνετέλεσε σε αυτή την τάση για πειραματισμό καθώς σε αυτό το πρώτο άλμπουμ εξερευνούν και post punk μουσικές φόρμες, μεταξύ άλλων.

Ευχαριστούμε για ακόμα μία φορά τον φίλο The Unspeakable που μας παραχώρησε το rip του άλμπουμ. Δόθηκε και σε εμάς η ευκαιρία να το ακούσουμε και να το αξιολογήσουμε προτού το ανεβάσουμε. Δεν σας κρύβουμε πως πολύ καιρό τώρα ετοιμάζουμε αυτή την ανάρτηση -όλο αυτόν τον καιρό ακούγοντας το "Bop Art", κάθε φορά με "νέα αυτιά". Πρόκειται για ένα "ανήσυχο" άλμπουμ του οποίου η προοπτική αλλάζει σε κάθε άκουσμα και περιέχει αρκετές πειραματικές φόρμες, θραύσματα ήχων και αναζητήσεων που μοιάζουν να συγκεράστηκαν τυχαία. Επίσης θα λέγαμε πως είναι ένα μελαγχολικό άλμπουμ όμως όχι με συγκεκριμένο τρόπο και αυτός είναι ένας από τους λόγους που αυτό το LP είναι πανέμορφο. Κάθε άκουσμά του αποκαλύπτει διαφορετικά μουσικά στρώματα που το κάνουν να ακούγεται είτε υπνωτικό, είτε οργισμένο είτε μελαγχολικό, ακόμα και αδιάφορο ώσπου επιτέλους να αποκαλυφθεί στη διάθεση του ακροατή. Πρόκειται λοιπόν για ένα "δυνατό" άλμπουμ που αξίζει να ακουστεί από κάθε αναγνώστη αυτού του blog και όχι μόνο! Καλή ακρόαση!!!

ENG: The Blue Aeroplanes come from UK's Bristol and they already well known as an outstanding indie/alternative rock band that were at their zenith mostly in the 90's. Nevertheless, they are still writing music and releasing their stuf today. However, when they released their first LP "Bop Art" in 1983 they hadn't establish this settled (and somewhat mainstream) sound. We could just describe their early work as being quite bold and experimenting, at the same time. The early Blue Aeroplanes synthesis included members from another band called Art Objects and this explains why they sounded so differently. We suppose they explored all forms of independent rock music, new sounds and forms of the 80's, post punk in particular.
Once again we are thankful to The Unspeakable for offering his own rip. So, we were given the chance to listen and evaluate the music before we decided to upload it for you. It's no secret that we have been preparing this post for quite some time - constantly listening to "Bop Art" - every time with a different mood and "new ears". In every sense it contains some restless music and its perspective seems to change everytime you listen to it because it reveals a multitude of experimentation forms, like tiny fragments of sounds put together in a random manner. We could also call it somehow melancholic and moody in an unspecified and intangible way and this is one of the main reasons why we consider it as a beautifully made LP. Every hearing reveals different layers of music; hypnotic, raged, melancholic, even uninteresting until it is finally "there" for each listener. This is an album with potential that definitely deserves wide recognition. Have a good listening to this gem!!!

Libido Blume: Brilliant Names and Dames mLP 1987, Δικαίωμα Διάβασης

Έφτασε και ο Σεπτέμβριος, ο οποίος προβλέπεται να είναι αρκετά δύσκολος για τη χώρα μας και κατ' επέκταση όλους εμάς. Μακάρι να έχουμε το σθένος και το κουράγιο να αντιμετωπίσουμε τη νέα λαίλαπα των περικοπών. Επειδή εδώ ασχολούμαστε με τη μουσική δεν σημαίνει πως δεν μας επηρρεάζει η οικονομική κρίση, αντιθέτως μας έχει αλλάξει τα φώτα.
Έτσι είπαμε να ξεκινήσουμε αυτόν τον Σεπτέμβριο κάπως αισιόδοξα - όχι για να ξεχάσουμε όσα αναφέραμε πιο πάνω - αλλά για να τα εξορκίσουμε κατά κάποιο τρόπο. Γι αυτό και ανεβάζουμε τη δεύτερη κυκλοφορία των πολυαγαπημένων Libido Blume με τίτλο "Brilliant Names and Dames" μέσω της Δικαίωμα Διάβασης (DiDi Music) εν έτει 1987. Πρόκειται για ένα μίνι-LP με 5 new wave διαμάντια μικρής διάρκειας γεμάτα ενέργεια και σπιρτάδα πολύ κοντά στον ήχο του πρώτου LP "Colours Melting". Τα 5 αυτά τραγούδια είναι γεμάτα αισιοδοξία με παρούσες τις post punk καταβολές όμως με μια πιο φρέσκια άποψη. Από το καταπληκτικό ομώνυμο "Brilliant Names and Dames", στο αμφίβολο "Who Wants the Abortionists? (we are not alone)", έπειτα στο πανέμορφο ορχηστρικό "Leather Bags" και από το "No Flowers for Florita" επίσης ένα από τα καλύτερα τραγούδια τους, σε μια άψογη επανεκτέλεση του "Cadillac Dreams" - "διασκευή"-έκπληξη αφού το κομμάτι πρωτοπαίχτηκε από τους Cpt. Neφος (το συγκρότημα του Άκη Μπογιατζή που προϋπήρχε των Libido Blume). Ρίξτε και μια ματιά στους καταπληκτικούς στίχους...πραγματικά πετυχημένοι.
Καλή ακρόαση λοιπόν στους Libido Blume, πιστεύουμε πως θα έχουν μια αισιόδοξη επιρροή.

ENG: September 2012 will be a very hard time for our country (Greece) and up to an extent to all of us. Wish we have the strength and courage to deal with the upcoming storm of financial cuts and perhaps fight back. The fact that most of the time we deal with music here at Ten Thousand Eyes doesn't mean that we aren't affected by the economic recession or we don't have a say, because it's killing us the same.
Thus, we decided to start up in an optimistic manner. By no means it doesn't cancel our statement above. We see music as a sort of exorcising means. So we chose the second release by the Libido Blume entitled "Brilliant Names and Dames" issued under Dikaioma Diavasis (Today's DiDi Music) in 1987. This is a mini LP with 5 short new wave gems stuffed with energy and spirit in the same way the first LP "Colours Melting" sounded like. Those 5 songs include more optimism amidst the well-known post punk lines in a sort of fresh way. Starting with the excellent same titled track "Brilliant Names and Dames", then the doubtful "Who Wants the Abortionists? (we are not alone)", then the beautiful instrumental "Leather Bags" and next, with one of L.B.'s best songs "No Flowers for Florita". The mini LP closes with a surprising "cover", apparently "Cadillac Dreams" is being replayed here and if you all could recall, this was originally played by Cpt Neφος (the band that preexisted Libido Blume, Akis Boyatzis was a member of that band too). Don't forget to check the brilliant lyrics included in the scans.
Have a good listening to this one, we believe that L.B. will have a positive effect anyway.

Drums and Stories: The Friendly Singer Said 1996, F.M. Records

Σήμερα σας παρουσιάζουμε τους Drums & Stories, ένα σχήμα από την Θεσσαλονίκη με δύο μόνο κυκλοφορίες στο ενεργητικό τους, ένα e.p. με τίτλο "The Critical Dream Path" του 1993 και τη μεγάλη τους κυκλοφορία το "The Friendly Singer Said" του 1996 στην F.M. Records. Εκείνη την εποχή η πλέον πολυεθνική F.M. έκανε μια προσπάθεια να προσεγγίσει συγκροτήματα και κοινό από το χώρο της εναλλακτικής rock σκηνής-προφανώς για εμπορικούς λόγους. Έκανε μια συμφωνία για επανακυκλοφορία και διανομή του υλικού της θρυλικής Creep (από εκείνη την συνεργασία έχουμε ανεβάσει το πρώτο άλμπουμ των Villa 21 και την συλλογή Return of the Creeps). Οι Drums & Stories ήταν ένα από αυτά τα συγκροτήματα που ωφελήθηκαν από αυτήν την προσπάθεια.
Ας μιλήσουμε όμως για τη μουσική...Ο ήχος των D&S είναι αρκετά μελωδικός, αιθέριος και μελαγχολικός. Οι δέκα άψογες συνθέσεις είναι αποτέλεσμα της μουσικής χημείας μεταξύ των μελών του σχήματος καθώς και καλοδουλεμένων στίχων που μιλούν για έρωτα, θάνατο και καθημερινές σχέσεις -μερικές φορές μοιάζουν Καβαφικοί, ιδιαίτερα στο "Senses Don't". Η μουσική που πλαισιώνει τους όμορφους στίχους είναι κυρίως ακουστική με ηλεκτρικές εξάρσεις εδώ και εκεί. Επίσης, τα μελωδικά φωνητικά είναι ένα πλεονέκτημα που προσθέτει επιπλέον στην ατμόσφαιρα των συνθέσεων. Οπωσδήποτε τα τραγούδια που θα σας αποτυπωθούν αμέσως είναι τα "The Tree of Youth", "Senses Don't", και "A Dream I Never Had" και "Embrace", όχι πως τα υπόλοιπα απογοητεύουν.
Φίλες και φίλοι ελπίζουμε να απολαύσετε τον "Φιλικό Τραγουδιστή" και τους Drums & Stories. Είναι ένα σχετικά "ελαφρύ" αλλά απολαυστικό άκουσμα για αυτή την εποχή. Θα ξανασυναντηθούμε τον Σεπτέμβριο. Έως τότε ευχόμαστε όσοι είστε σε διακοπές, καλή ξεκούραση.

ENG: Today's post is about Drums & Stories, an alternative music formation coming from the Thessaloniki, Greece. They have released an e.p. in 1993 entitled "The Critical Dream Path" and a long play cd entitled "The Friendly Singer Said" on F.M. Records in 1996. At that period F.M. Records was in effort of approaching the alternative greek rock scene, both bands and fans (apparently for commercial reasons). The label also agreed to re-release the material of legendary Creep Records (regarding the aforementioned re-releases we have already posted the Villa 21 "A Ghost on the Move" and VA "Return of the Creeps" sometime ago). Drums & Stories were also benefited and thus had the chance to release their material via a large label that F.M. Records was at the time.
Let us talk about the music now. Drums & Stories are melodious, ethereal and melancholic at the same time. The good chemistry among the members of the group resulted in making ten flawless songs about love, death, and everyday human relations. The lyrics have got a poetic edge, at times similar to Cavafy's themes, especially in "Senses Don't". Moreover, the music is appropriate; mostly acoustic with random electric outbreaks here and there. Also, the melodic vocals prove to be a great advantage too, as they help make the atmosphere more effective. Absolutely some of the songs you'll enjoy and familiarize with are "The Tree of Youth", "Senses Don't", "A Dream I Never Had" and "Embrace". The rest of the songs aren't dissapointing either.
We hope you will enjoy the "Friendly Singer" and Drums & Stories. They are certainly a light-weight listen for August, too. We will 'meet' again in September. Until then, we hope you'll get lots of rest especially if you are on vacation.

Incontinents: The Call 1981, Scopa Invisible

Έχει περάσει αρκετός καιρός που ο καλός φίλος "bX-59cppw" μας έχει παραχωρήσει ένα rip του μοναδικού LP των Γάλλων Incontinents  (Inc. ονομάζονται εδώ) με τίτλο "The Call". Οπότε μετά από μια σειρά αναρτήσεων με gothic rock θέματα νομίζουμε πως κάτι πιο 'back to basics' αλλά και πιο πειραματικό, θα ήταν ό,τι έπρεπε.

Το "The Call" είναι ένα έξοχο minimal post punk άλμπουμ που κυκλοφόρησε το 1981 από την ανεξάρτητη Scopa Invisible (αμέσως μετά το σπάνιο 7-ιντσο "Politics"/"Sorrow"). Βέβαια λίγα πράγματα μπορεί κανείς να βρεί γι' αυτούς στο διαδίκτυο. Το άσχημο είναι πως οι κυκλοφορίες τους περιορίζονται μόνο στiς δύο προαναφερθείσες, αλλά σίγουρα θα είχε ενδιαφέρον εάν υπήρχαν περισσότερες. Ακούγοντας τα 9 κομμάτια του άλμπουμ απορεί κανείς πως καταφέρνουν με τόσο λιτούς ήχους να παράγουν αυτόν τον μοναδικό ήχο και με τα ελάχιστα συνηθισμένα (minimal) μέσα. Αν και όλα μοιάζουν 'πειραγμένα' εντούτοις είναι τοποθετημένα στη σωστή σειρά και στη δοσολογία που πρέπει. Σε στιγμές που μουσική τους γίνεται 'κοφτερή' και λίγο ιδιότροπη ("Politics", "I Know You") φέρνει στο νου τον ήχο των Cabaret Voltaire, αλλά άλλες φορές γίνεται πιο προσβάσιμη-σχεδόν pop όπως π.χ. στα "Mirror", "Pure As Ice", "Definitive Decision", "Friday Girls" κ.α.. Μόνο από τα παραπάνω καταλαβαίνει κανείς πως οι μουσικοί που απαρτίζουν τους Incontinents ήξεραν τι έκαναν εν έτει 1981. Μεταξύ των άλλων περιέχεται και το κομμάτι "Sorrow" από το θρυλικό πρώτο τους single. Καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: It's been quite some time since our good friend "bX-59cppw" has provided us with a rip of "The Call", sole LP of the French band Incontinents (aka Inc.). After a few gothic rock oriented entries we decided it was about time to go 'back to basics' and finally post this little gem, since it is a clear rip after all.
"The Call" is indeed an excellent minimal post punk effort which was released in 1981 on the alternative Scopa Invisible label, right after their long sought 7-inch "Politics/Sorrow" was released. However, there are very few information to be found on the net about this band and it is a pity that they haven't released anything else besides the two items we already mentioned. At the listening of this LP, one can question how the Incontinents were able to produce such unique sound with the use of such few resources. Bass, guitar, synth and drums sounds are all ground and blended into an experimental uniqueness; apparently each part then falls into place. At times their music turns edgy and cranky ("Politics", I Know You") and brings to mind the Cabaret Voltaire sound, while other times it becomes accessible, almost pop-ish ("Mirrors", "Pure As Ice", "Definitive Decision", "Friday Girls" ). Definitely one realises that those guys knew exactly what they were doing back in 1981. In addition to the album tracks, we have included the song "Sorrow" from their first 7-inch. Have a good listening to this one.

The Venus Fly Trap: Pandora's Box 1991, Danceteria Records

Για τον Alex Novak είχαμε μιλήσει παλιότερα όταν είχαμε παρουσιάσει το e.p. "Montezuma" των The Tempest. Είχαμε και τότε αναφερθεί στην ανήσυχη προσωπικότητα αυτού του ξεχωριστού μουσικού, ο οποίος αφού είχε δουλέψει κατά το παρελθόν με αρκετά new wave/post punk σχήματα (Religious Overdose, The Tempest, Attrition), κατέληξε φτιάχνοντας τους Venus Fly Trap, ένα μουσικό "όχημα" με σαφώς ανοιχτόμυαλη κατεύθυνση σε alternative rock ιδιώματα χωρίς όμως να αμελεί τις σκοτεινές post punk  ηχητικές καταβολές. Κοντολογίς, το αποτέλεσμα είναι πιο κοντά στο gothic rock με αρκετές ενέσεις φρέσκου ήχου και επαρκή ψυχεδελικά και progressive rock ψήγματα. Είναι αλήθεια βέβαια, και αυτό θα το διαπιστώσετε μόνοι σας, πως οι Venus Fly Trap είναι ένα συγκρότημα που δεν μπορείς να το κατατάξεις εύκολα σε κάποιο είδος. Το άλμπουμ που ανεβάζουμε σήμερα είναι το τρίτο τους κατά σειρά με τίτλο "Pandora's Box" και κυκλοφόρησε από την Danceteria Records το 1991. Σχετικά με την κυκλοφορία του δίσκου ο Alex Novak είχε δώσει μια ενδιαφέρουσα συνέντευξη στο περιοδικό Spiral όπου μεταξύ των άλλων μιλάει και για το παρελθόν. Το "Pandora's Box" είναι ένα καλοφτιαγμένο άλμπουμ κυρίως λόγω της ποικιλίας των επιρροών - όπως προαναφέραμε, αλλά και γιατί οι συνθέσεις δείχνουν  την ωριμότητα του Novak ως συνθέτη και μουσικού.

Ο μύθος λέει πως κάποτε το "Κουτί της Πανδώρας" άνοιξε για να ελευθερώσει τα καλά και τα κακά του κόσμου. Ας δώσουμε την προσοχή μας στα καλά που περιέχει η πολλά υποσχόμενη κυκλοφορία. Ήδη από το εισαγωγικό gothic rock "Shadow Ministry", ένα επιβλητικά ενορχηστρωμένο κομμάτι, όπως άλλωστε και το εξίσου μεγαλόπρεπο "Monument to the Sublime" γίνεται ξεκάθαρο πως πρόκειται για ένα ωραίο άλμπουμ. Προσέξτε πως κλείνει το κομμάτι με το θέμα του "Persuaders" (συνθ. John Barry) από το ομώνυμο σήριαλ. Φρέσκος ήχος με επίσης ψυχεδελικές πινελιές και στα "World Turned Upside Down", "Jewel Encrusted Hands". Το ατμοσφαιρικό space rock "Ruby Revisited" μετράει ως μία από τις καλύτερες στιγμές του δίσκου, μουσική που πάει πιο μακριά από το post punk στυλ των Tempest.. Σε σκοτεινά ψυχεδελικά τεχνάσματα επικεντρώνεται και το "Side Winder" και αμέσως στη συνέχεια και το πικρόγλυκο "Deathwatch a Beatle" Επίσης, ένα από τα καλύτερα είναι και το "Achilles Heel" με τον Ορφικό Ύμνο (?!?) στην εισαγωγή. Από κει και μετά το κομμάτι εξελισσεται σε ένα progressive-space rock πρότυπο εφορμώντας σε πλήθος από λαβυρινθώδεις μελωδίες και εναλλαγές. Κλείνοντας, συνειδητοποιούμε πως όλη η ενέργεια που εκλύεται αρχής γενομένης από το "Shadow Ministry" ως το "Achilles' Heel" φαίνεται πως καταλαγιάζει στο πιάνο του "Shedding Another Skin" δίνοντας τέλος σε ένα αληθινά μεγαλοπρεπή δίσκο. ENG: We firstly mentioned Alex Novak when we presented The Tempest's "Montezuma" e.p. back in August 2011. We also referred to his restless personality, that of a musician/composer who had previously worked with several new wave/post punk groups such as Religious Overdose, The Tempest, Attrition, and redounded creating The Venus Fly Trap which was a music formation with open-minded likeness for the alternative rock sound, however not without the moodiness of post punk. In short, the outcome of The Venus Fly Trap was closer to the gothic rock idiom with a few "injections" of modern sound as well as psychedelic and progressive rock music elements. It is true and you are about to see for yourselves that VTF are hard to be categorized. Today's post is about the third LP entitled "Pandora's Box" released on Danceteria in 1991. Overall, "Pandora's Box" is a well-crafted LP mainly due to the diversity of influences combined with Novak's ability to build (more) mature compositions. Novak was interviewed by Spiral Magazine regarding the release of "Pandora's Box" and among all he refers to his work prior to VTF.
With reference to the myth the Pandora's Box if opened all good and evil of this world is to be released, the VTF album sets our attention only to the good stuff...starting with the gothic rock masterpiece "Shadow Ministry", an impressive arrangement as well as the equally great "Monument to the Sublime" is. Note how the latter ends blending with the beautiful tune of John Barry's "The Persuaders", the theme from the same-titled 70's serial. There's also fresh sound with psychedelic hues in both, "World Turned Upside Down"and "Jewel Encrusted Hands". "Ruby Revisited" is an atmospheric space rock masterpiece, one of this album's greatest, nevertheless far from the post punk style of The Tempest. "Side Winder" focuses on certain psychedelic treatments along with the bittersweet "Deathwatch a Beatle". "Achilles' Heel" is again one of the greatest songs to appear in "Pandora's Box". The recitation of an Orphic Hymn (?!?) introduces what primarily appears to be a space-progressive rock anthem and eventually transforms in a complex and elaborative epic, apparently attuned with the style of the album. In the end, all this built-up energy settles down with the piano of "Shedding Another Skin" and closing another great album. We hope you like it

Into the Abyss: Martyrium [with extra songs] 1993/1995 Spectre Records

Επιμένουμε στον gothic rock ήχο παρουσιάζοντας ένα συγκρότημα απαρτιζόμενο κατά τα 2/3 από Έλληνες και με βάση του το Darmstadt της Γερμανίας. Όντας φοιτητές εκεί, ο Γιάννης Καλιφατίδης (κιθάρα/φωνητικά) και ο Κώστας Τζέρας (μπάσσο) μαζί με τον Jens Gellner (τύμπανα) δημιούργησαν τους Into the Abyss, ένα ιδιότυπο gothic rock σχήμα με κύριες επιρροές τους New Model Army και Joy Division, αλλά και τους Cult, Sisters of Mercy και Fields of the Nephilim. Το άλμπουμ που παρουσιάζουμε σήμερα είναι το πρώτο τους και έχει τον τίτλο "Martyrium". Είχε αρχικά κυκλοφορήσει σε κασσέτα το 1993, και αργότερα το 1995, σε cd από την Spectre Records. Ακολούθησαν τα "The Feathered Snake" (1995), "Cosmogonia" (1998), και τέλος, το "Adrenochrome" (2000), ηχογραφημένο στο An Club στην Αθήνα από τη μία και μοναδική τους ιστορική, θα λέγαμε, εμφάνιση στην Ελλάδα. Αν και πιο πάνω αναφέραμε τις πολλές επιρροές των Into the Abyss, εντούτοις το αποτέλεσμα είναι ηχητικά μοναδικό και διαφορετικό από τα παραπάνω. Ο τρόπος που παντρεύεται η κιθάρα αλά-Fields of the Nephilim με το "δαιμονισμένο" βιολί (Helmut Eckstein), αλλά και συναγωνίζονται και παίζουν μεταξύ τους σαν δύο φλογεροί εραστές είναι απαράμιλλος. Οι συχνότητες φτάνουν σε ιλλιγγιώδη ύψη ενώ μαζί τους 'ανεβαίνει' και ο ακροατής, το αποτέλεσμα είναι άκρως θετικό που σχεδόν αγγίζει το θείο. Είναι φανερό πως η μουσική τους περιέχει και στοιχεία από psychedelic rock, progressive rock, αλλά και παραδοσιακούς ήχους (κυρίως ελληνικούς). Δεν χρειάζεται να επιμένουμε στο πόσο ξεχωριστή είναι για μας η μουσική των Into the Abyss, αυτό ήδη το έχετε καταλάβει. Κρύβει τόσο πάθος μέσα της, δονείται σαν επαναστατικός ύμνος και είναι με κάθε έννοια επική. Σε αυτό θα προσθέσουμε και την συνθετική δουλειά και την εκτέλεση, αλλά και τα διαπεραστικά φωνητικά του Καλιφατίδη τα οποία τελικά είναι αυτά που σε στοιχειώνουν μετά από κάθε άκουσμα.

Γι αυτούς τους λόγους το "Martyrium" ως ντεμπούτο είναι μοναδικό, οπωσδήποτε η μουσική των Into the Abyss είναι εξαιρετική ως μείγμα διαφορετικών επιρροών, αλλά τελικά δεν είναι μόνο αυτή που σε προσκαλεί στο σπειροειδές ταξίδι στο άγνωστο και τις περίπλοκες μελωδίες για να σε εξυψώσει μέσα από αυτό. Είναι και η θεματολογία των επίκαιρων και διαχρονικών στίχων -κάθε τραγούδι ένα μανιφέστο- θα λέγαμε πως είναι σχεδόν προφητική εάν στην ίδια την ανθρώπινη Ιστορία δεν επαναλαμβανόντουσαν τα ίδια λάθη σαν κακόγουστο αστείο: πόλεμοι, πείνα, δίψα για εξουσία και χρήμα, απληστία και θεοκρατία. Διαβάστε τους στίχους, απορροφήστε τους μαζί με τη μουσική. Αν σταθούμε σε μερικά από τα κομμάτια οπωσδήποτε ξεχωρίζουν τα "Martyrs", "...They spent their whole lives on the run/never cared about careers/while others became fat/in the governments of blood", "Banner of the Fray", "...In school they cultivate the narrowness/and teach us wars the kings commanded/but never fightings of the poor/their education is based on rivalry and control", "Just Another Voice", "...But on this night the secret doubts/fill you with a righteous hate/you turn the barrel on your idols now...". "Research Without Conscience", "...We are the engineers/Dressed our disgusting stench/in a brand-new silken suit/the firms we work for/are rolling in money by the arms trade/with the countries of the Third World", "Dumb Crutches", "...In our whole lives we have never tried/to find the reasons why/why we have to hunger/why we watch our children die/saying there is nothing we could do/to rise and see our future in our own point of view".

Εδώ πρέπει να πούμε πως  έχουμε προσθέσει τέσσερα επιπλέον τραγούδια που φιλοξενήθηκαν σε συλλογές ή ανήκουν σε συνεργασίες. Πρώτα-πρώτα είναι η διασκευή στο καταπληκτικό "Waiting for the Sun" των Doors, θα δείτε πόσο άψογα εκτελούν το κομμάτι και το φέρνουν στα μέτρα τους.... περιέχεται στη συλλογή "Various-Gothic Spirit Vol.1" του 1995. Στη συνέχεια, το "Banner of the Fray" σε εκτέλεση του 1995 από τη συλλογή "Various-Gothic Rock 2" επίσης του 1995. Ακολουθεί το "On the Run (the batcave version)" που είχε φιλοξενηθεί στην συλλογή "Various-Metal Holocaust Vol.1" και αυτή του 1995. Τελευταίο στα bonus κομμάτια είναι το "Dragon Snake (the crimson version)" σε διαφορετική εκτέλεση απ' ότι υπάρχει στο δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους. Η συγκεκριμένη εκτέλεση έρχεται από το split με τους Grass Harp εποχής 1995 και αυτό. Νομίζουμε πως τα επιπλέον κομμάτια πλαισιώνουν το άλμπουμ με τον καλύτερο τρόπο. Μπορείτε να βρείτε επιπλέον πληροφορίες για το συγκρότημα στο -όπως πάντα- άψογα ενημερωμένο blog Tribe4mian, σε δύο αναρτήσεις, εδώ και εδώ. ENG: Insisting on the gothic rock sound we bring you a band that consisted by 2/3 of Greek musicians and was based in Darmstadt, Germany. While studying there Yannis Kalifatidis (voice, guitar) and Costas Tzeras (bass) met Jens Gellner (drums) and created Into the Abyss, a unique gothic rock formation. They were influenced by New Model Army, Joy Division, as well as The Cult, The Sisters of Mercy and The Fields of the Nephilim. We have their first album for you entitled "Martyrium". It was firstly self-released on tape in 1993 and re-issued on cd in 1995 through Spectre Records. Then the rest followed: "The Feathered Snake" (1995), "Cosmogonia" (1998) and finally "Adrenochrome" (2000) a live recording from their one and only -historical- appearance in Athens at An Club. Into the Abyss were indeed influenced by so many groups from the past, however their sound is a lot different from all the above. The combination of the Nephilimesque guitar with the passionate violin (Helmut Eckstein) as they are both intertwined as two fiery lovers is an incomparable achievement. The frequencies rise in a dizzying way overtaking the listener's mood, that has an ultimately positive outcome, almost divine. After listening to the album it is obvious that they weren't an average gothic rock group and we realise that their influences also include psychedelic and progressive rock as well as traditional sounds (mostly Greek). We don't really have to insist on how special their music is to us, that must be quite clear by now. Into the Abyss' songs are vibrant passionate revolution hymns, epic in every sense. In addition to the compositions and delivery of the songs, there is also the penetrating and haunting voice of Yannis Kalifatidis which seems to haunt you all the way.
For all the good reasons, "Martyrium" is a unique debut album and definitely its music a blend of diverse influences, however, there's more to that invite into the unknown spiral trip of elaborate melodies... It is the topics the lyrics deal with; temporal, everlasting, turn every song into a protesting manifest. Each song would be a prophesy unless human history itself didn't repeat the same mistakes the way bad jokes appear: war, famine, thirst for power and money, greed and theocracy. Browse through the lyrics, absorb them simultaneously with music. Certain songs that stand out are "Martyrs", "...They spent their whole lives on the run/never cared about careers/while others became fat/in the governments of blood", "Banner of the Fray", "...In school they cultivate the narrowness/and teach us wars the kings commanded/but never fightings of the poor/their education is based on rivalry and control", "Just Another Voice", "...But on this night the secret doubts/fill you with a righteous hate/you turn the barrel on your idols now...". "Research Without Conscience", "...We are the engineers/Dressed our disgusting stench/in a brand-new silken suit/the firms we work for/are rolling in money by the arms trade/with the countries of the Third World", "Dumb Crutches", "...In our whole lives we have never tried/to find the reasons why/why we have to hunger/why we watch our children die/saying there is nothing we could do/to rise and see our future in our own point of view".
We have also included four extra songs from various compilations around 1995. Must've been quite a creative period for ITA. First of all, there's a Doors cover "Waiting for the Sun" (from the "Various-Gothic Spirit Vol.1" compilation). Next, there's "Banner of the Fray" (from "Various-Gothic Rock 2" compilation). Then, there's "On the Run (the batcave version)" (from "Various-Metal Holocaust Vol.1" compilation). Last extra song is "Dragon Snake (the crimson version)" (from the split m-LP with Grass Harp. The Flowers of Romance: Dorian Grey, 1990 Wipe Out Records

Οι Flowers of Romance είναι ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά και από τα παγκοσμίως πιο γνωστά σχήματα της εγχώριας ανεξάρτητης ροκ σκηνής. Ξεκίνησαν ως punk σχήμα από το 1981 με τον ήχο τους να εξελίσσεται διαρκώς και να ωριμάζει μέχρι και την τελευταία τους κυκλοφορία. Στη διάρκεια αυτών των ετών οι F.O.R. κυκλοφόρησαν αρκετό υλικό σε βινύλιο και cd και συμμετείχαν σε πολλές εγχώριες και διεθνείς συλλογές και έκαναν πολλές ζωντανές εμφανίσεις. Το πρώτο τους LP κυκλοφόρησε από την Wipe Out Records το 1990 με τίτλο "Dorian Grey" και κατέχει τα πρωτεία του πρώτου gothic rock άλμπουμ στην ιστορία της ελληνικής ανεξάρτητης σκηνής. Η ανήσυχη "ψυχή" και φωνή των F.O.R., ο Μιχάλης Πούγουνας είναι ο κύριος συνθέτης, στιχουργός, κοντολογίς ο ιθύνων νους του συγκροτήματος στη διάρκεια ολόκληρης της ιστορίας τους. Το "Dorian Grey" ολοκληρώνεται με την εξαιρετική συνεισφορά του Πλάτωνα Παπαδημητρίου και Αχιλλέα Γερομόσχο στις κιθάρες και του Θόδωρου Μποτίνη στο μπάσσο και Μπάμπη Ευθυμίου στα τύμπανα. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, το "Dorian Grey" βρίθει από πανέμορφα και δυναμικά goth rock τραγούδια τα οποία οπωσδήποτε ικανοποιούν τους λάτρεις του είδους και όχι μόνο. Ήδη από το εκρηκτικό μεν, συγκρατημένο δε "Shooting a Love Fix" που ανοίγει το δίσκο διαφαίνονται οι τάσεις τους για τελειότητα. Φυσικά, οι άψογες συνθέσεις δεν περιορίζονται και δεν εξαντλούνται από το πρώτο κιόλας κομμάτι. Τα "In Her House", "Christmas in A Cunthouse" αποτυπώνουν ενδιαφέρουσες μελωδίες και "καυστική" θεματολογία επίσης. Προς το τέλος της πρώτης πλευράς το ύφος γλυκαίνει με μια κλασική μελαγχολική μπαλάντα, το "1000 Dying Words", τραγούδι που αποπνέει νοσταλγία και που θυμίζει 70's. Κατά τη γνώμη μας στη συνέχεια υπάρχει ένα από τα καλύτερα κομμάτια του άλμπουμ, το επιβλητικό "There is Nothing We Can't Solve Together", όπου διαφαίνεται η συνθετική αλλά και εκφραστική δεινότητα του Πούγουνα αλλά και η ικανότητα του να γράφει πανέμορφους στίχους. Ακολουθεί το επικό "Kashmir" που είναι ενδεχομένως το πιο διάσημο τραγούδι τους, έχει δε φιλοξενηθεί σε συλλογές ανά τον κόσμο, και είναι από τα καλύτερα τραγούδια της gothic rock σκηνής -ένα 'all-times-classic'. Δεν υπάρχει κανένα κομμάτι που να απογοητεύει, έτσι και τα  "Picture Pillow" και "Opium" το καθένα με μοναδικό τρόπο ενισχύει την άποψη πως το "Dorian Grey" είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα άλμπουμ του είδους. Το πικρόγλυκο -ως αποχαιρετιστήριο- και αντιπολεμικό, οικολογικό "The Last Summer Night (on Earth)", κλείνει το δίσκο ως ελεγεία απαισιοδοξίας και καταστροφής αλλά και ταυτόχρονα αναγέννησης και ελπίδας.
Πρέπει εδώ να προσθέσουμε πως ένα από τα πράγματα για τα οποία ξεχωρίσαν οι F.O.R. από την αρχή είναι οι μοναδικές συνθέσεις και φυσικά τα φωνητικά του Μιχάλη που είναι γεμάτα οργή, μελαγχολία, δυναμισμό - καμμιά φορά όλα αυτά μαζί σε μια "βελούδινη" χροιά. Είναι από τις φωνές που μπορούν να τραγουδήσουν τα πάντα και αυτό το συνειδητοποιεί κανείς ακόμα και σήμερα στα live των New Zero God (το σημερινό σχήμα πολύ κοντά στον ήχο των F.O.R.). Επιπλέον, ακούγοντάς τους για πρώτη φορά θα εντοπίσετε και εσείς τις επιρροές από τους Cult, Mission αλλά και την δεκαετία του '70, αφού με άψογο και αριστοτεχνικό τρόπο αποτίουν φόρο τιμής στους T-Rex και τον Marc Bolan με τη διασκευή στο "Children of the Revolution" θέλοντας ίσως να δώσουν και το 'στίγμα' τους με ένα παλιό καλό επαναστατικό κάλεσμα. Ιδού λοιπόν ένα άλμπουμ που παραμένει νέο μετά από 22 χρόνια. Απολαύστε!!!

ENG: The Flowers of Romance were one of the most important and well-known alternative rock bands of Greece. They started in 1981 as a punk band with their sound changing and evolving constantly even up to their last release. During those years the Flowers of Romance released a lot of material in any form (cassette, LP, cd), participated in lots of Greek and International compilations and had numerous live performances as well. Their debut LP was released by Wipe Out Records in 1990 and was entitled "Dorian Grey". It is the first gothic rock to be released in Greece. Michalis Pougounas was the uneasy 'heart and soul' of the band, singer, main composer and in short, the mastermind behind F.O.R. the whole time. With the excellent contribution of Platon Papadimitriou and Achilleas Geromoschos on guitars, Theodore Botinis and Babis Efthimiou on bass and drums respectively, F.O.R. are a complete band and "Dorian Grey" became real. More specifically, this LP is full of great beautiful and dynamic gothic rock songs for the pleasure of everybody; fans or not. Even with the kick off of the opening song "Shooting a Love Fix" one can tell the group's aim for perfection. Naturally, great songs continue..."In Her House" and "Christmas in A Cunthouse" depict some interesting and intriguing tunes as well as caustic themes, too. Towards the end of the A side the tunes are softer with the classic style ballad entitled "1000 Dying Words", a rather nostalgic song reminder of the 70's. One of the best songs (to our opinion) of this LP comes next, the imposing "There Is Nothing We Can't Solve Together" that defines Michael Pougounas' great composing and delivering skills. Next comes "Kashmir" an epic, perhaps their most well-known song and one of the most beautiful songs of gothic rock; what is known as an "all times classic" as it has appeared in numerous compilations all over the world. Truly, there isn't even one dissapointing tune here, thus "Opium" and "Picture Pillow" continue to prove that "Dorian Grey" is one of the greatest LPs of the genre. The record closes with the bittersweet anti-war, ecologic "The Last Summer Night (on Earth)" which is an elegy of pessimism and destruction as well as rebirth and hope.
Let us note here that the Flowers of Romance stand out for making great songs and delivering them thoroughly, for Michalis' great vocal ability and skill. He delivers the songs with anger, melancholy, dynamism -sometimes all those at the same time- in a a 'velvet' tone. He has a unique voice that can sing almost anything and if one finds him/herself in a live performance of New Zero God (Pougounas' latest music vehicle similar to F.O.R.) can realise that. To those who aren't familiar with the music of the Flowers of Romance you might feel familiar with The Cult and The Mission influences as well as the 70's references when they pay tribute to Marc Bolan and T-Rex with an excellent cover of "Children of the Revolution" which apparently marks a good old revolutionary call. Here's an album that is still young after 22 years. By all means, enjoy!

Αυτούς λοιπόν τους χαλεπούς καιρούς που δεν γνωρίζουμε εάν το μπλόγκ μας θα βρίσκεται στη θέση του την επόμενη μέρα, αποφασίσαμε με τη βοήθεια του Radiodada που κυκλοφόρησε διαδικτυακά τον "Οδηγό επιβίωσης για Bloggers" να διατηρήσουμε επαφή με τους αναγνώστες μας και άλλους bloggers μέσω μιας λίστας εγγραφής την οποία θα βρείτε στην δεξιά στήλη με τον τίτλο "Για να μη χαθούμε". Για να μη χαθούμε λοιπον, έχουμε φτιάξει KAI ένα "ομοίωμα" του '10.000 Eyes' στην πλατφόρμα της wordpress και πιο συγκεκριμένα στην διεύθυνση "dekaxiliadesmatia.wordpress.com". Shrinking Violets: Mask mini-LP & Everything 7'', 1988 Phantom Records

Φαίνεται πως έχουμε μια μικρή αδυναμία στην ανεξάρτητη σκηνή της Αυστραλίας κι έτσι αποφασίσαμε να ποστάρουμε τις δύο μοναδικές κυκλοφορίες των Shrinking Violets, ενός τετραμελούς συγκροτήματος από το Sydney. Πρόκειται για ένα mini-LP με τίτλο "Mask" και για ένα 7-ιντσο με τίτλο "Everything", τα οποία κυκλοφόρησαν το 1988 στο ανεξάρτητο label Phantom Records. Επίσης συμμετείχαν και στην συλλογή "Assorted Desecrations and Magnificent Mutations" της ίδιας εταιρείας-θα την βρείτε εδώ. Όπως πάντα, οι πληροφορίες για πολλά από τα σχήματα που φιλοξενούμε εδώ -και οι S.V.δεν αποτελούν εξαίρεση- είναι από ανεπαρκείς έως ανύπαρκτες, οπότε βασιζόμαστε στην ίδια τη μουσική. Παρ' όλα αυτά βρήκαμε πως μερικά από τα μέλη της μπάντας είχαν ασχοληθεί και με άλλα σχήματα-projects. Ο Andrew Clement με τους αξιόλογους Other Voices και ο Julian Knowles με τους Even as we Speak και τους Social Interiors. Η μουσική των S.V. είναι ένα μείγμα new wave και νεο-ψυχεδέλειας με μια μοντέρνα "indie" κατεύθυνση. Στο mini-LP "Mask" τα πιο δυνατά κομμάτια είναι τα "Never Too Late" (υπάρχει στη συλλογή που αναφέραμε παραπάνω), "Small Talk" και "Colours of Ecstasy", τα οποία κάπως 'προδίδουν' τις post punk ρίζες των S.V. Στα δε "Roman Hammer" και "Mask" υπάρχει μια υποψία ψυχεδελικών επιρροών. Το ομώνυμο "Everything" από το 7-ιντσο είναι επίσης ένα απο τα καλύτερα τραγούδια τους σε new wave στυλ. Μπορεί κάποιος να δει τους Shrinking Violets συμπληρωματικά με  τα συγκροτήματα στα οποία είχαμε κάνει το αφιέρωμα με γενικό τίτλο: "The Greek Part of the Australian Underground". Shrinking Violets: Everything 7'' (Phantom Records, 1988)

It seems that we have a soft spot for the Australian Independent music scene, so we decided to post the two record rips from the Shrinking Violets which were a four-member band from Sydney. They released a mini-LP entitled "Mask" and a 7-inch single entitled "Everything", both in 1988 on the Independent label Phantom Records. Also, the Shrinking Violets took part in the "Assorted Desecrations and Magnificent Mutations" compilation (also on Phantom Records)-you will find it here. As it is always the case, there aren't enough information around the Web and the Shrinking Violets aren't an exception to that. However, we found that a couple band members have worked with other groups/projects in the past. For your information, Andrew Clement has worked with a band called Other Voices and Julian Knowles with Even As We Speak and Social Interiors.
The music of the Shrinking Violets is a nice blend of new wave and neo-psychedelia, given a modern "indie" touch. In the "Mask" mini-LP the most prominent songs are "Never Too Late" (which you will also find in the compilation we mentioned above), "Small Talk" and "Colours Of Ecstasy" as they reveal the post punk roots of the Violets, whereas in "Roman Hammer" and "Mask" there's a light overtone of psychedelia added as well. The song "Everything" from the 7-inch is an equally strong piece of work. You might consider the Shrinking Violets post as an appendix of a previous tribute to the Australian Independent music scene entitled "The Greek Part of the Australian Underground".
