Incontinents: The Call 1981, Scopa Invisible

Έχει περάσει αρκετός καιρός που ο καλός φίλος "bX-59cppw" μας έχει παραχωρήσει ένα rip του μοναδικού LP των Γάλλων Incontinents  (Inc. ονομάζονται εδώ) με τίτλο "The Call". Οπότε μετά από μια σειρά αναρτήσεων με gothic rock θέματα νομίζουμε πως κάτι πιο 'back to basics' αλλά και πιο πειραματικό, θα ήταν ό,τι έπρεπε.

Το "The Call" είναι ένα έξοχο minimal post punk άλμπουμ που κυκλοφόρησε το 1981 από την ανεξάρτητη Scopa Invisible (αμέσως μετά το σπάνιο 7-ιντσο "Politics"/"Sorrow"). Βέβαια λίγα πράγματα μπορεί κανείς να βρεί γι' αυτούς στο διαδίκτυο. Το άσχημο είναι πως οι κυκλοφορίες τους περιορίζονται μόνο στiς δύο προαναφερθείσες, αλλά σίγουρα θα είχε ενδιαφέρον εάν υπήρχαν περισσότερες. Ακούγοντας τα 9 κομμάτια του άλμπουμ απορεί κανείς πως καταφέρνουν με τόσο λιτούς ήχους να παράγουν αυτόν τον μοναδικό ήχο και με τα ελάχιστα συνηθισμένα (minimal) μέσα. Αν και όλα μοιάζουν 'πειραγμένα' εντούτοις είναι τοποθετημένα στη σωστή σειρά και στη δοσολογία που πρέπει. Σε στιγμές που μουσική τους γίνεται 'κοφτερή' και λίγο ιδιότροπη ("Politics", "I Know You") φέρνει στο νου τον ήχο των Cabaret Voltaire, αλλά άλλες φορές γίνεται πιο προσβάσιμη-σχεδόν pop όπως π.χ. στα "Mirror", "Pure As Ice", "Definitive Decision", "Friday Girls" κ.α.. Μόνο από τα παραπάνω καταλαβαίνει κανείς πως οι μουσικοί που απαρτίζουν τους Incontinents ήξεραν τι έκαναν εν έτει 1981. Μεταξύ των άλλων περιέχεται και το κομμάτι "Sorrow" από το θρυλικό πρώτο τους single. Καλή ακρόαση.

ENG: It's been quite some time since our good friend "bX-59cppw" has provided us with a rip of "The Call", sole LP of the French band Incontinents (aka Inc.). After a few gothic rock oriented entries we decided it was about time to go 'back to basics' and finally post this little gem, since it is a clear rip after all.
"The Call" is indeed an excellent minimal post punk effort which was released in 1981 on the alternative Scopa Invisible label, right after their long sought 7-inch "Politics/Sorrow" was released. However, there are very few information to be found on the net about this band and it is a pity that they haven't released anything else besides the two items we already mentioned. At the listening of this LP, one can question how the Incontinents were able to produce such unique sound with the use of such few resources. Bass, guitar, synth and drums sounds are all ground and blended into an experimental uniqueness; apparently each part then falls into place. At times their music turns edgy and cranky ("Politics", I Know You") and brings to mind the Cabaret Voltaire sound, while other times it becomes accessible, almost pop-ish ("Mirrors", "Pure As Ice", "Definitive Decision", "Friday Girls" ). Definitely one realises that those guys knew exactly what they were doing back in 1981. In addition to the album tracks, we have included the song "Sorrow" from their first 7-inch. Have a good listening to this one.

The Venus Fly Trap: Pandora's Box 1991, Danceteria Records

Για τον Alex Novak είχαμε μιλήσει παλιότερα όταν είχαμε παρουσιάσει το e.p. "Montezuma" των The Tempest. Είχαμε και τότε αναφερθεί στην ανήσυχη προσωπικότητα αυτού του ξεχωριστού μουσικού, ο οποίος αφού είχε δουλέψει κατά το παρελθόν με αρκετά new wave/post punk σχήματα (Religious Overdose, The Tempest, Attrition), κατέληξε φτιάχνοντας τους Venus Fly Trap, ένα μουσικό "όχημα" με σαφώς ανοιχτόμυαλη κατεύθυνση σε alternative rock ιδιώματα χωρίς όμως να αμελεί τις σκοτεινές post punk  ηχητικές καταβολές. Κοντολογίς, το αποτέλεσμα είναι πιο κοντά στο gothic rock με αρκετές ενέσεις φρέσκου ήχου και επαρκή ψυχεδελικά και progressive rock ψήγματα. Είναι αλήθεια βέβαια, και αυτό θα το διαπιστώσετε μόνοι σας, πως οι Venus Fly Trap είναι ένα συγκρότημα που δεν μπορείς να το κατατάξεις εύκολα σε κάποιο είδος. Το άλμπουμ που ανεβάζουμε σήμερα είναι το τρίτο τους κατά σειρά με τίτλο "Pandora's Box" και κυκλοφόρησε από την Danceteria Records το 1991. Σχετικά με την κυκλοφορία του δίσκου ο Alex Novak είχε δώσει μια ενδιαφέρουσα συνέντευξη στο περιοδικό Spiral όπου μεταξύ των άλλων μιλάει και για το παρελθόν. Το "Pandora's Box" είναι ένα καλοφτιαγμένο άλμπουμ κυρίως λόγω της ποικιλίας των επιρροών - όπως προαναφέραμε, αλλά και γιατί οι συνθέσεις δείχνουν  την ωριμότητα του Novak ως συνθέτη και μουσικού.

Ο μύθος λέει πως κάποτε το "Κουτί της Πανδώρας" άνοιξε για να ελευθερώσει τα καλά και τα κακά του κόσμου. Ας δώσουμε την προσοχή μας στα καλά που περιέχει η πολλά υποσχόμενη κυκλοφορία. Ήδη από το εισαγωγικό gothic rock "Shadow Ministry", ένα επιβλητικά ενορχηστρωμένο κομμάτι, όπως άλλωστε και το εξίσου μεγαλόπρεπο "Monument to the Sublime" γίνεται ξεκάθαρο πως πρόκειται για ένα ωραίο άλμπουμ. Προσέξτε πως κλείνει το κομμάτι με το θέμα του "Persuaders" (συνθ. John Barry) από το ομώνυμο σήριαλ. Φρέσκος ήχος με επίσης ψυχεδελικές πινελιές και στα "World Turned Upside Down", "Jewel Encrusted Hands". Το ατμοσφαιρικό space rock "Ruby Revisited" μετράει ως μία από τις καλύτερες στιγμές του δίσκου, μουσική που πάει πιο μακριά από το post punk στυλ των Tempest.. Σε σκοτεινά ψυχεδελικά τεχνάσματα επικεντρώνεται και το "Side Winder" και αμέσως στη συνέχεια και το πικρόγλυκο "Deathwatch a Beatle" Επίσης, ένα από τα καλύτερα είναι και το "Achilles Heel" με τον Ορφικό Ύμνο (?!?) στην εισαγωγή. Από κει και μετά το κομμάτι εξελισσεται σε ένα progressive-space rock πρότυπο εφορμώντας σε πλήθος από λαβυρινθώδεις μελωδίες και εναλλαγές. Κλείνοντας, συνειδητοποιούμε πως όλη η ενέργεια που εκλύεται αρχής γενομένης από το "Shadow Ministry" ως το "Achilles' Heel" φαίνεται πως καταλαγιάζει στο πιάνο του "Shedding Another Skin" δίνοντας τέλος σε ένα αληθινά μεγαλοπρεπή δίσκο. ENG: We firstly mentioned Alex Novak when we presented The Tempest's "Montezuma" e.p. back in August 2011. We also referred to his restless personality, that of a musician/composer who had previously worked with several new wave/post punk groups such as Religious Overdose, The Tempest, Attrition, and redounded creating The Venus Fly Trap which was a music formation with open-minded likeness for the alternative rock sound, however not without the moodiness of post punk. In short, the outcome of The Venus Fly Trap was closer to the gothic rock idiom with a few "injections" of modern sound as well as psychedelic and progressive rock music elements. It is true and you are about to see for yourselves that VTF are hard to be categorized. Today's post is about the third LP entitled "Pandora's Box" released on Danceteria in 1991. Overall, "Pandora's Box" is a well-crafted LP mainly due to the diversity of influences combined with Novak's ability to build (more) mature compositions. Novak was interviewed by Spiral Magazine regarding the release of "Pandora's Box" and among all he refers to his work prior to VTF.
With reference to the myth the Pandora's Box if opened all good and evil of this world is to be released, the VTF album sets our attention only to the good stuff...starting with the gothic rock masterpiece "Shadow Ministry", an impressive arrangement as well as the equally great "Monument to the Sublime" is. Note how the latter ends blending with the beautiful tune of John Barry's "The Persuaders", the theme from the same-titled 70's serial. There's also fresh sound with psychedelic hues in both, "World Turned Upside Down"and "Jewel Encrusted Hands". "Ruby Revisited" is an atmospheric space rock masterpiece, one of this album's greatest, nevertheless far from the post punk style of The Tempest. "Side Winder" focuses on certain psychedelic treatments along with the bittersweet "Deathwatch a Beatle". "Achilles' Heel" is again one of the greatest songs to appear in "Pandora's Box". The recitation of an Orphic Hymn (?!?) introduces what primarily appears to be a space-progressive rock anthem and eventually transforms in a complex and elaborative epic, apparently attuned with the style of the album. In the end, all this built-up energy settles down with the piano of "Shedding Another Skin" and closing another great album. We hope you like it

Into the Abyss: Martyrium [with extra songs] 1993/1995 Spectre Records

Επιμένουμε στον gothic rock ήχο παρουσιάζοντας ένα συγκρότημα απαρτιζόμενο κατά τα 2/3 από Έλληνες και με βάση του το Darmstadt της Γερμανίας. Όντας φοιτητές εκεί, ο Γιάννης Καλιφατίδης (κιθάρα/φωνητικά) και ο Κώστας Τζέρας (μπάσσο) μαζί με τον Jens Gellner (τύμπανα) δημιούργησαν τους Into the Abyss, ένα ιδιότυπο gothic rock σχήμα με κύριες επιρροές τους New Model Army και Joy Division, αλλά και τους Cult, Sisters of Mercy και Fields of the Nephilim. Το άλμπουμ που παρουσιάζουμε σήμερα είναι το πρώτο τους και έχει τον τίτλο "Martyrium". Είχε αρχικά κυκλοφορήσει σε κασσέτα το 1993, και αργότερα το 1995, σε cd από την Spectre Records. Ακολούθησαν τα "The Feathered Snake" (1995), "Cosmogonia" (1998), και τέλος, το "Adrenochrome" (2000), ηχογραφημένο στο An Club στην Αθήνα από τη μία και μοναδική τους ιστορική, θα λέγαμε, εμφάνιση στην Ελλάδα. Αν και πιο πάνω αναφέραμε τις πολλές επιρροές των Into the Abyss, εντούτοις το αποτέλεσμα είναι ηχητικά μοναδικό και διαφορετικό από τα παραπάνω. Ο τρόπος που παντρεύεται η κιθάρα αλά-Fields of the Nephilim με το "δαιμονισμένο" βιολί (Helmut Eckstein), αλλά και συναγωνίζονται και παίζουν μεταξύ τους σαν δύο φλογεροί εραστές είναι απαράμιλλος. Οι συχνότητες φτάνουν σε ιλλιγγιώδη ύψη ενώ μαζί τους 'ανεβαίνει' και ο ακροατής, το αποτέλεσμα είναι άκρως θετικό που σχεδόν αγγίζει το θείο. Είναι φανερό πως η μουσική τους περιέχει και στοιχεία από psychedelic rock, progressive rock, αλλά και παραδοσιακούς ήχους (κυρίως ελληνικούς). Δεν χρειάζεται να επιμένουμε στο πόσο ξεχωριστή είναι για μας η μουσική των Into the Abyss, αυτό ήδη το έχετε καταλάβει. Κρύβει τόσο πάθος μέσα της, δονείται σαν επαναστατικός ύμνος και είναι με κάθε έννοια επική. Σε αυτό θα προσθέσουμε και την συνθετική δουλειά και την εκτέλεση, αλλά και τα διαπεραστικά φωνητικά του Καλιφατίδη τα οποία τελικά είναι αυτά που σε στοιχειώνουν μετά από κάθε άκουσμα.

Γι αυτούς τους λόγους το "Martyrium" ως ντεμπούτο είναι μοναδικό, οπωσδήποτε η μουσική των Into the Abyss είναι εξαιρετική ως μείγμα διαφορετικών επιρροών, αλλά τελικά δεν είναι μόνο αυτή που σε προσκαλεί στο σπειροειδές ταξίδι στο άγνωστο και τις περίπλοκες μελωδίες για να σε εξυψώσει μέσα από αυτό. Είναι και η θεματολογία των επίκαιρων και διαχρονικών στίχων -κάθε τραγούδι ένα μανιφέστο- θα λέγαμε πως είναι σχεδόν προφητική εάν στην ίδια την ανθρώπινη Ιστορία δεν επαναλαμβανόντουσαν τα ίδια λάθη σαν κακόγουστο αστείο: πόλεμοι, πείνα, δίψα για εξουσία και χρήμα, απληστία και θεοκρατία. Διαβάστε τους στίχους, απορροφήστε τους μαζί με τη μουσική. Αν σταθούμε σε μερικά από τα κομμάτια οπωσδήποτε ξεχωρίζουν τα "Martyrs", "...They spent their whole lives on the run/never cared about careers/while others became fat/in the governments of blood", "Banner of the Fray", "...In school they cultivate the narrowness/and teach us wars the kings commanded/but never fightings of the poor/their education is based on rivalry and control", "Just Another Voice", "...But on this night the secret doubts/fill you with a righteous hate/you turn the barrel on your idols now...". "Research Without Conscience", "...We are the engineers/Dressed our disgusting stench/in a brand-new silken suit/the firms we work for/are rolling in money by the arms trade/with the countries of the Third World", "Dumb Crutches", "...In our whole lives we have never tried/to find the reasons why/why we have to hunger/why we watch our children die/saying there is nothing we could do/to rise and see our future in our own point of view".

Εδώ πρέπει να πούμε πως  έχουμε προσθέσει τέσσερα επιπλέον τραγούδια που φιλοξενήθηκαν σε συλλογές ή ανήκουν σε συνεργασίες. Πρώτα-πρώτα είναι η διασκευή στο καταπληκτικό "Waiting for the Sun" των Doors, θα δείτε πόσο άψογα εκτελούν το κομμάτι και το φέρνουν στα μέτρα τους.... περιέχεται στη συλλογή "Various-Gothic Spirit Vol.1" του 1995. Στη συνέχεια, το "Banner of the Fray" σε εκτέλεση του 1995 από τη συλλογή "Various-Gothic Rock 2" επίσης του 1995. Ακολουθεί το "On the Run (the batcave version)" που είχε φιλοξενηθεί στην συλλογή "Various-Metal Holocaust Vol.1" και αυτή του 1995. Τελευταίο στα bonus κομμάτια είναι το "Dragon Snake (the crimson version)" σε διαφορετική εκτέλεση απ' ότι υπάρχει στο δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους. Η συγκεκριμένη εκτέλεση έρχεται από το split με τους Grass Harp εποχής 1995 και αυτό. Νομίζουμε πως τα επιπλέον κομμάτια πλαισιώνουν το άλμπουμ με τον καλύτερο τρόπο. ENG: Insisting on the gothic rock sound we bring you a band that consisted by 2/3 of Greek musicians and was based in Darmstadt, Germany. While studying there Yannis Kalifatidis (voice, guitar) and Costas Tzeras (bass) met Jens Gellner (drums) and created Into the Abyss, a unique gothic rock formation. They were influenced by New Model Army, Joy Division, as well as The Cult, The Sisters of Mercy and The Fields of the Nephilim. We have their first album for you entitled "Martyrium". It was firstly self-released on tape in 1993 and re-issued on cd in 1995 through Spectre Records. Then the rest followed: "The Feathered Snake" (1995), "Cosmogonia" (1998) and finally "Adrenochrome" (2000) a live recording from their one and only -historical- appearance in Athens at An Club. Into the Abyss were indeed influenced by so many groups from the past, however their sound is a lot different from all the above. The combination of the Nephilimesque guitar with the passionate violin (Helmut Eckstein) as they are both intertwined as two fiery lovers is an incomparable achievement. The frequencies rise in a dizzying way overtaking the listener's mood, that has an ultimately positive outcome, almost divine. After listening to the album it is obvious that they weren't an average gothic rock group and we realise that their influences also include psychedelic and progressive rock as well as traditional sounds (mostly Greek). We don't really have to insist on how special their music is to us, that must be quite clear by now. Into the Abyss' songs are vibrant passionate revolution hymns, epic in every sense. In addition to the compositions and delivery of the songs, there is also the penetrating and haunting voice of Yannis Kalifatidis which seems to haunt you all the way.
For all the good reasons, "Martyrium" is a unique debut album and definitely its music a blend of diverse influences, however, there's more to that invite into the unknown spiral trip of elaborate melodies... It is the topics the lyrics deal with; temporal, everlasting, turn every song into a protesting manifest. Each song would be a prophesy unless human history itself didn't repeat the same mistakes the way bad jokes appear: war, famine, thirst for power and money, greed and theocracy. Browse through the lyrics, absorb them simultaneously with music. Certain songs that stand out are "Martyrs", "...They spent their whole lives on the run/never cared about careers/while others became fat/in the governments of blood", "Banner of the Fray", "...In school they cultivate the narrowness/and teach us wars the kings commanded/but never fightings of the poor/their education is based on rivalry and control", "Just Another Voice", "...But on this night the secret doubts/fill you with a righteous hate/you turn the barrel on your idols now...". Then, there's "On the Run (the batcave version)" (from "Various-Metal Holocaust Vol.1" compilation). Last extra song is "Dragon Snake (the crimson version)" (from the split m-LP with Grass Harp. The Flowers of Romance: Dorian Grey, 1990 Wipe Out Records

Οι Flowers of Romance είναι ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά και από τα παγκοσμίως πιο γνωστά σχήματα της εγχώριας ανεξάρτητης ροκ σκηνής. Ξεκίνησαν ως punk σχήμα από το 1981 με τον ήχο τους να εξελίσσεται διαρκώς και να ωριμάζει μέχρι και την τελευταία τους κυκλοφορία. Στη διάρκεια αυτών των ετών οι F.O.R. κυκλοφόρησαν αρκετό υλικό σε βινύλιο και cd και συμμετείχαν σε πολλές εγχώριες και διεθνείς συλλογές και έκαναν πολλές ζωντανές εμφανίσεις. Το πρώτο τους LP κυκλοφόρησε από την Wipe Out Records το 1990 με τίτλο "Dorian Grey" και κατέχει τα πρωτεία του πρώτου gothic rock άλμπουμ στην ιστορία της ελληνικής ανεξάρτητης σκηνής. Η ανήσυχη "ψυχή" και φωνή των F.O.R., ο Μιχάλης Πούγουνας είναι ο κύριος συνθέτης, στιχουργός, κοντολογίς ο ιθύνων νους του συγκροτήματος στη διάρκεια ολόκληρης της ιστορίας τους. Το "Dorian Grey" ολοκληρώνεται με την εξαιρετική συνεισφορά του Πλάτωνα Παπαδημητρίου και Αχιλλέα Γερομόσχο στις κιθάρες και του Θόδωρου Μποτίνη στο μπάσσο και Μπάμπη Ευθυμίου στα τύμπανα. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, το "Dorian Grey" βρίθει από πανέμορφα και δυναμικά goth rock τραγούδια τα οποία οπωσδήποτε ικανοποιούν τους λάτρεις του είδους και όχι μόνο. Ήδη από το εκρηκτικό μεν, συγκρατημένο δε "Shooting a Love Fix" που ανοίγει το δίσκο διαφαίνονται οι τάσεις τους για τελειότητα. Φυσικά, οι άψογες συνθέσεις δεν περιορίζονται και δεν εξαντλούνται από το πρώτο κιόλας κομμάτι. Τα "In Her House", "Christmas in A Cunthouse" αποτυπώνουν ενδιαφέρουσες μελωδίες και "καυστική" θεματολογία επίσης. Προς το τέλος της πρώτης πλευράς το ύφος γλυκαίνει με μια κλασική μελαγχολική μπαλάντα, το "1000 Dying Words", τραγούδι που αποπνέει νοσταλγία και που θυμίζει 70's. Κατά τη γνώμη μας στη συνέχεια υπάρχει ένα από τα καλύτερα κομμάτια του άλμπουμ, το επιβλητικό "There is Nothing We Can't Solve Together", όπου διαφαίνεται η συνθετική αλλά και εκφραστική δεινότητα του Πούγουνα αλλά και η ικανότητα του να γράφει πανέμορφους στίχους. Ακολουθεί το επικό "Kashmir" που είναι ενδεχομένως το πιο διάσημο τραγούδι τους, έχει δε φιλοξενηθεί σε συλλογές ανά τον κόσμο, και είναι από τα καλύτερα τραγούδια της gothic rock σκηνής -ένα 'all-times-classic'. Δεν υπάρχει κανένα κομμάτι που να απογοητεύει, έτσι και τα  "Picture Pillow" και "Opium" το καθένα με μοναδικό τρόπο ενισχύει την άποψη πως το "Dorian Grey" είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα άλμπουμ του είδους. Το πικρόγλυκο -ως αποχαιρετιστήριο- και αντιπολεμικό, οικολογικό "The Last Summer Night (on Earth)", κλείνει το δίσκο ως ελεγεία απαισιοδοξίας και καταστροφής αλλά και ταυτόχρονα αναγέννησης και ελπίδας.
Πρέπει εδώ να προσθέσουμε πως ένα από τα πράγματα για τα οποία ξεχωρίσαν οι F.O.R. από την αρχή είναι οι μοναδικές συνθέσεις και φυσικά τα φωνητικά του Μιχάλη που είναι γεμάτα οργή, μελαγχολία, δυναμισμό - καμμιά φορά όλα αυτά μαζί σε μια "βελούδινη" χροιά. Είναι από τις φωνές που μπορούν να τραγουδήσουν τα πάντα και αυτό το συνειδητοποιεί κανείς ακόμα και σήμερα στα live των New Zero God (το σημερινό σχήμα πολύ κοντά στον ήχο των F.O.R.). Επιπλέον, ακούγοντάς τους για πρώτη φορά θα εντοπίσετε και εσείς τις επιρροές από τους Cult, Mission αλλά και την δεκαετία του '70, αφού με άψογο και αριστοτεχνικό τρόπο αποτίουν φόρο τιμής στους T-Rex και τον Marc Bolan με τη διασκευή στο "Children of the Revolution" θέλοντας ίσως να δώσουν και το 'στίγμα' τους με ένα παλιό καλό επαναστατικό κάλεσμα. Ιδού λοιπόν ένα άλμπουμ που παραμένει νέο μετά από 22 χρόνια. Απολαύστε!!!

ENG: The Flowers of Romance were one of the most important and well-known alternative rock bands of Greece. They started in 1981 as a punk band with their sound changing and evolving constantly even up to their last release. During those years the Flowers of Romance released a lot of material in any form (cassette, LP, cd), participated in lots of Greek and International compilations and had numerous live performances as well. For further information and a detailed history of the F.O.R. you may visit this page -and this one too.
Their debut LP was released by Wipe Out Records in 1990 and was entitled "Dorian Grey". It is the first gothic rock to be released in Greece. Michalis Pougounas was the uneasy 'heart and soul' of the band, singer, main composer and in short, the mastermind behind F.O.R. the whole time. With the excellent contribution of Platon Papadimitriou and Achilleas Geromoschos on guitars, Theodore Botinis and Babis Efthimiou on bass and drums respectively, F.O.R. are a complete band and "Dorian Grey" became real. More specifically, this LP is full of great beautiful and dynamic gothic rock songs for the pleasure of everybody; fans or not. Even with the kick off of the opening song "Shooting a Love Fix" one can tell the group's aim for perfection. Naturally, great songs continue..."In Her House" and "Christmas in A Cunthouse" depict some interesting and intriguing tunes as well as caustic themes, too. Towards the end of the A side the tunes are softer with the classic style ballad entitled "1000 Dying Words", a rather nostalgic song reminder of the 70's. One of the best songs (to our opinion) of this LP comes next, the imposing "There Is Nothing We Can't Solve Together" that defines Michael Pougounas' great composing and delivering skills. Next comes "Kashmir" an epic, perhaps their most well-known song and one of the most beautiful songs of gothic rock; what is known as an "all times classic" as it has appeared in numerous compilations all over the world. Truly, there isn't even one dissapointing tune here, thus "Opium" and "Picture Pillow" continue to prove that "Dorian Grey" is one of the greatest LPs of the genre. The record closes with the bittersweet anti-war, ecologic "The Last Summer Night (on Earth)" which is an elegy of pessimism and destruction as well as rebirth and hope.
Let us note here that the Flowers of Romance stand out for making great songs and delivering them thoroughly, for Michalis' great vocal ability and skill. He delivers the songs with anger, melancholy, dynamism -sometimes all those at the same time- in a a 'velvet' tone. He has a unique voice that can sing almost anything and if one finds him/herself in a live performance of New Zero God (Pougounas' latest music vehicle similar to F.O.R.) can realise that. To those who aren't familiar with the music of the Flowers of Romance you might feel familiar with The Cult and The Mission influences as well as the 70's references when they pay tribute to Marc Bolan and T-Rex with an excellent cover of "Children of the Revolution" which apparently marks a good old revolutionary call. Here's an album that is still young after 22 years. By all means, enjoy!

Shrinking Violets: Mask mini-LP & Everything 7'', 1988 Phantom Records

Φαίνεται πως έχουμε μια μικρή αδυναμία στην ανεξάρτητη σκηνή της Αυστραλίας κι έτσι αποφασίσαμε να ποστάρουμε τις δύο μοναδικές κυκλοφορίες των Shrinking Violets, ενός τετραμελούς συγκροτήματος από το Sydney. Πρόκειται για ένα mini-LP με τίτλο "Mask" και για ένα 7-ιντσο με τίτλο "Everything", τα οποία κυκλοφόρησαν το 1988 στο ανεξάρτητο label Phantom Records. Επίσης συμμετείχαν και στην συλλογή "Assorted Desecrations and Magnificent Mutations" της ίδιας εταιρείας-θα την βρείτε εδώ. Όπως πάντα, οι πληροφορίες για πολλά από τα σχήματα που φιλοξενούμε εδώ -και οι S.V.δεν αποτελούν εξαίρεση- είναι από ανεπαρκείς έως ανύπαρκτες, οπότε βασιζόμαστε στην ίδια τη μουσική. Παρ' όλα αυτά βρήκαμε πως μερικά από τα μέλη της μπάντας είχαν ασχοληθεί και με άλλα σχήματα-projects. Ο Andrew Clement με τους αξιόλογους Other Voices και ο Julian Knowles με τους Even as we Speak και τους Social Interiors. Η μουσική των S.V. είναι ένα μείγμα new wave και νεο-ψυχεδέλειας με μια μοντέρνα "indie" κατεύθυνση. Στο mini-LP "Mask" τα πιο δυνατά κομμάτια είναι τα "Never Too Late" (υπάρχει στη συλλογή που αναφέραμε παραπάνω), "Small Talk" και "Colours of Ecstasy", τα οποία κάπως 'προδίδουν' τις post punk ρίζες των S.V. Στα δε "Roman Hammer" και "Mask" υπάρχει μια υποψία ψυχεδελικών επιρροών. Το ομώνυμο "Everything" από το 7-ιντσο είναι επίσης ένα απο τα καλύτερα τραγούδια τους σε new wave στυλ. Μπορεί κάποιος να δει τους Shrinking Violets συμπληρωματικά με  τα συγκροτήματα στα οποία είχαμε κάνει το αφιέρωμα με γενικό τίτλο: "The Greek Part of the Australian Underground". It seems that we have a soft spot for the Australian Independent music scene, so we decided to post the two record rips from the Shrinking Violets which were a four-member band from Sydney. They released a mini-LP entitled "Mask" and a 7-inch single entitled "Everything", both in 1988 on the Independent label Phantom Records. Also, the Shrinking Violets took part in the "Assorted Desecrations and Magnificent Mutations" compilation (also on Phantom Records)-you will find it here. As it is always the case, there aren't enough information around the Web and the Shrinking Violets aren't an exception to that. However, we found that a couple band members have worked with other groups/projects in the past. For your information, Andrew Clement has worked with a band called Other Voices and Julian Knowles with Even As We Speak and Social Interiors.
The music of the Shrinking Violets is a nice blend of new wave and neo-psychedelia, given a modern "indie" touch. In the "Mask" mini-LP the most prominent songs are "Never Too Late" (which you will also find in the compilation we mentioned above), "Small Talk" and "Colours Of Ecstasy" as they reveal the post punk roots of the Violets, whereas in "Roman Hammer" and "Mask" there's a light overtone of psychedelia added as well. The song "Everything" from the 7-inch is an equally strong piece of work. You might consider the Shrinking Violets post as an appendix of a previous tribute to the Australian Independent music scene entitled "The Greek Part of the Australian Underground".

The Gothics: Richie's Back In Town 7'' [1990] & Monsters 10'' [1992] (Susstones Records)

 Μένοντας για λίγο στο μουσικό ύφος της πρόσφατης ανάρτησης εκπληρώνουμε σχετική παράκληση φίλου του blog, για ανάρτηση δύο δίσκων που ο ίδιος μας παραχώρησε εδώ και καιρό, ενός 10-ιντσου και ενός 7-ιντσου του νεοψυχεδελικού garage punk σχήματος The Gothics από τις Η.Π.Α. Ο φίλος θέλησε να διατηρήσει την ανωνυμία του και εμείς οφείλουμε τουλάχιστον να τον ευχαριστήσουμε για αυτή την προσφορά. Ελάχιστες οι πληροφορίες για τους Gothics στο διαδίκτυο, αλλά υπάρχουν κάποια στοιχεία σχετικά με τον επικεφαλής John Francovich ο οποίος  παλιότερα υπήρξε μέλος των Plasticland, γνωστό cult σχήμα στους γνωρίζοντες την νεοψυχεδελική σκηνή παγκοσμίως. Στους Gothics ο Francovich αναλαμβάνει κυρίως τα φωνητικά, το μπάσσο αλλά και το μπουζούκι(??).
Το 7-ιντσο "Richie's Back In Town" κυκλοφόρησε μέσα στο 1990 από την Susstones Records και περιέχει δύο τραγούδια σε νεο-ψυχεδελικό garage punk στυλ ιδιαίτερα το ομώνυμο "Richie's...". Το άλλο κομμάτι με τίτλο "Little Goldfish in a Bowl" μας πάει ένα μικρό ψυχεδελικό ταξίδι στο παρελθόν θυμίζοντας μας το...1968.
Απεναντίας, το 10-ιντσο "Monsters" αποτελεί μια ολοκληρωμένη δουλειά σε διάρκεια mini-LP (μέσω της Susstones δύο χρόνια αργότερα, το 1992) ενώ διατηρεί επαφή με τις 'ρίζες', δείχνει την τάση για "άνοιγμα" σε πιο μοντέρνο ήχο. Για παράδειγμα, το ομώνυμο τραγούδι "Monsters" περιέχει και deathrock στοιχεία παρόμοια με των Cramps, Sunglasses After Dark και είναι το μοναδικό κομμάτι του δίσκου που ξεχωρίζει κατ' αυτόν τον τρόπο. Όμως, κομμάτια σαν το αργό και υπνωτικό "Beatrice" θα μοιάζουν άκρως απολαυστικά ιδιαίτερα στους εντρυφήσαντες στην πρώιμη punk περίοδο της δεκαετίας του '70. Ομοίως και τα "Communicable Disease", "You Want", "Alone Again". Τέλος, στο ίδιο κλίμα βρίσκεται και το όμορφο "Crog" που κλείνει το 10-ιντσο εγχείρημα με ένα σχεδόν "επικό" στυλ. Απολαύστε τα.

ENG: Insisting in terms of style, we decided to fulfill a request of one of our friends for uploading/posting two record rips that he kindly offered some time ago. These are a 10-inch and a 7-inch of a U.S. neo-psychedelic garage punk formation by the name of The Gothics. Our friend wanted to preserve anonymity, nevetheless, we are obliged to thank him for his offering. There aren't much to be found for the Gothics around the web, however, there are some info for the leader of the band John Francovich, who appeared to be part of the cult neo-psychedelic band Plasticland (those of you acquainted with the genre must have heard them before). As far as The Gothics are concerned, Francovich is in charge taking over the lead vocals, the bass guitar and the bouzouki, too (??).
The 7-inch is entitled "Richie's Back In Town" and was released under Susstones Records in 1990. Contains two songs focused on the neo-psychedelic/garage punk style, especially the first homonymous A-side track. As for the B-side track entitled "Little Goldfish in a Bowl", it takes us way back to the psychedelic past, around...1968.
On the contrary, the 10-inch "Monsters" is altogether a complete work (again via Susstones Records) released two years later, in 1992. "Monsters" is also based on garage 'roots', but this time The Gothics have a tendency for a modern sound. For instance, the same titled song really makes a difference as it contains some deathrock elements in the style of The Cramps or Sunglasses After Dark. However, there are songs such as the extremely enjoyable and hypnotising "Beatrice" reminiscent of the early punk period of the 70's. In the same vein (faster in pace) the songs "Communicable Disease", "You Want", "Alone Again" etc. Finally, "Crog" flirts with an almost "epic"-like style in the end. Enjoy these two.

7-inch singles, April 2012 part four: Permanent Show 7'' & Personality Crisis 7'' & The Hydes: Hard Lovin 7'' e.p.

Και τώρα κάτι λιγάκι διαφορετικό... το φυλάξαμε για το τελευταίο μέρος του Απριλιάτικου αφιερώματος σε κάποιες σημαντικές 7-ιντσες κυκλοφορίες. Παρουσιάζουμε τρία συγκροτήματα του garage/garage punk ιδιώματος με "επιθετική" και παθιασμένη παρουσία στο χώρο της ανεξάρτητης Ελληνικής ροκ μουσικής. Σε αυτή την αναζήτηση που κάναμε για τα τρία παρακάτω συγκροτήματα, ήταν δύσκολο-μάλλον ακατόρθωτο να βρούμε περαιτέρω στοιχεία εκτός από αυτά που υπάρχουν ήδη στα ένθετα των δίσκων, οπότε θα αρκεστούμε κυρίως στη μουσική. Ευχαριστούμε ιδιαίτερα τον Joe που μας παρείχε τους δίσκους.

Ξεκινάμε με το πιο παλιό από τα 7-ιντσα, τους Αθηναίους Permanent Show στο Big Nose Trip/Paris που κυκλοφόρησε από την Wipe Out εν έτει 1993. Οι Permanent Show, παίζουν μελωδικό νεο-ψυχεδελικό garage όπου η farfissa παίζει πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο ιδιαιτέρως στο "Big Nose Trip" όπου η μελωδία σιγά σιγά κλιμακώνεται θυμίζοντας πρωτογενείς ψυχεδελικές φόρμες. Όμως το "Paris" είναι αυτό που "μένει" με το πρώτο άκουσμα στον ακροατή, κι αυτό συμβαίνει λόγω του κολλητικού riff της κιθάρας. Από όσο γνωρίζουμε, οι Permanent Show δεν κυκλοφόρησαν τίποτε άλλο πέρα από αυτό το απολαυστικό 7-ιντσο.

Περνάμε τώρα στους παθιασμένους rock 'n' rollers Personality Crisis από την Κατερίνη της Πιερίας και την μοναδική 7-ιντση ομότιτλη κυκλοφορία τους από την Swallow it All Records, ένα label που ειδικεύεται σε garage και garage punk υλικό. Έχουν επιπλέον κυκλοφορήσει και δύο cd στην ίδια εταιρεία. Αυτό που κάνει εντύπωση με τους Personality Crisis είναι η απίστευτη ενέργεια που εξαπολύουν μέσα από τη μουσική τους. Τα δύο κομμάτια του 7-ιντσου ("Lost Case"/"Dead Fun") είναι το ένα καλύτερο από το άλλο. Εντοπίζουμε εύκολα τις δημιουργικές επιρροές από τους παππούδες Stooges αλλά και τους μπαμπάδες Ramones. Συνολικά η μουσική τους δεν είναι τίποτε άλλο από αγνό και ασυμβίβαστο rock 'n' roll που θυμίζει το παλιό γνωμικό "ζήσε γρήγορα, πέθανε νέος" και που φαίνεται πως έκανε πράξη ένας εκ των μελών του συγκροτήματος, ο 'Fuzzy' Παπαχρόνης που χάθηκε πρόωρα σε αυτοκινητιστικό δυστύχημα και που θήτευσε και στους Rocking Bones ενώ παράλληλα έκανε καριέρα ηθοποιού, ήταν δηλαδή ένα πραγματικό ταλέντο.

Τέλος, θα κλείσουμε αυτή τη σειρά αναρτήσεων με τους Hydes από την Θεσσαλονίκη και το 7-ιντσο e.p. τους με τίτλο "Hard Lovin" του 1997. Όπως και οι Personality Crisis, έτσι και οι Hydes κυκλοφόρησαν το υλικό τους μέσω της Swallow it All Records. Να πούμε επίσης πως η πρώτη τους κυκλοφορία (το 7-ιντσο "Out Tonite") ήταν στην Αυστραλέζικη Corduroy. Οι Hydes ξεχύνουν τον παθιασμένο, "βρώμικο", rock 'n' roll ήχο μιας garage μπάντας, είναι δηλαδή ατίθασοι, φευγάτοι, ακριβώς όπως θα έπρεπε να είναι ένα τέτοιο συγκρότημα. Έχουν μελωδικές, καλοδουλεμένες και ολοκληρωμένες συνθέσεις, αλλά είναι πιο σκοτεινοί από τα παραπάνω συγκροτήματα της ανάρτησης μας. Επιπλέον, εικάζουμε πως το όνομα τους είναι αναφορά στον Mr. Hyde, το σκοτεινό alter ego του Dr. Jekyll, από τη νουβέλα του Robert Lewis Stevenson "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde". Οπωσδήποτε είναι ένα σχήμα που θα αγαπήσετε. Ευχόμαστε καλή ακρόαση στα τρία αυτά 7-ντσα. Θα τα πούμε τον επόμενο...μήνα με περισσότερη μουσική.

ENG: And now here's something slightly different...which we kept for the last part of this April's tribute to notable 7-inch releases. Here are three bands from the garage/garage punk genre, all ready and passionate, and coming from Greece. Any quest for further information returned fruitless, it was almost impossible to find anything about the following bands. Guess the music will do (it's work). Credits and thanks to Joe for providing us with the three 7-inch records to rip.

First things first and we begin with the oldest 7-inch of the three, the only release by the Athenian band Permanent Show, "Big Nose Trip"/"Paris" issued on Wipe Out Records in 1993. Permanent Show are into melodic new psychedelic/garage with the intense and farfissa organ escalating during "Big Nose Trip's" psychedelic built-up. As for the flipside track "Paris", the guitar riff will get you into listening to it again and again.

Now, let's see the passionate rock 'n' rollers Personality Crisis from Katerini of Pieria (Northern Greece) and their one and only vinyl release on Swallow It All Records. They also have two more releases (on cd) on the same garage label. What's great about Personality Crisis is that they manage to launch an incredible musical energy through their songs. The two songs contained here ("Lost Case"/"Dead Fun") are equally strong and are distinctively influenced by the grandfathers called The Stooges and the fathers called The Ramones. Personality Crisis deal uncompromisingly with genuine rock 'n' roll, this summarized in the old motto "live fast, die young". "Fuzzy" Papachronis the band's guitarist is an example of that, he died quite young (he lost his life in a car accident). He was a talented person, among other things he was also involved with another band called Rocking Bones and pursued a part-time acting career, too).

Finally, we're closing this post with The Hydes from Thessaloniki (Northern Greece) and their 1997 "Hard Lovin" 7-inch e.p. on Swallow It All Records. Their first ever release ("Out Tonite" 7-inch) was on the Australian label Corduroy. The Hydes spit out music in a genuine, passionate, "dirty" rock 'n' roll manner. Consequently, they are untamed, rebellious as a garage band should be. Their well-worked compositions reveal a darker shade garage music compared to the previous bands of this post. Likewise, their name must be a reference to the character of Mr. Hyde, the alter ego of Dr. Jekyll, taken from R.L. Stevenson's novel "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde". They are definitely the kind of music that you'll love.

VA: Return of the Creeps - The Singles, 1995 Creep Records

Αναμφισβήτητα η Creep Records ήταν μία από τις πρώτες και ίσως η σημαντικότερη δισκογραφική εταιρεία στο χώρο του ανεξάρτητου Ελληνικού Rock. Σε πέντε δημιουργικά χρόνια από το 1982 έως το 1987 κυκλοφόρησε το υλικό μερικών από τα πιο σημαντικά συγκροτήματα στην κατηγορία του new wave-post punk. Μέσα από αρκετές δυσκολίες και ιδιοτροπίες της εποχής η Creep Records ανέδειξε τη σκοτεινή πλευρά του Ελληνικού ανεξάρτητου ροκ έτσι ώστε να δώσει και βήμα έκφρασης σε κάποιες μπάντες που σήμερα θεωρούνται πλέον "βασικές" από τους ανθρώπους που ακούν και ασχολούνται με το συγκεκριμένο είδος μουσικής. Δεν είναι καθόλου τυχαίο ονόματα σαν τους The Reporters, Villa 21, South of No North, Yell-O-Yell, Cpt Nefos, Metro Decay και άλλα, σήμερα να αποτελούν τον ακρογωνιαίο λίθο της μοντέρνας ανεξάρτητης ροκ μουσικής στην Ελλάδα, αλλά και στην Ευρώπη. Για εμάς εδώ στο 10.000 eyes blog, οι μουσικές αυτές ήταν και είναι η αφετηρία για ένα πανέμορφο μουσικό ταξίδι σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα και θέλουμε να ευχαριστήσουμε με την ευκαιρία όλους τους συντελεστές της Creep για την καταπληκτική μουσική που μας έδωσαν.

Όσον αφορά την συλλογή "Return of the Creeps, The Singles" που ανεβάζουμε σήμερα, αποτελεί την "κληρονομιά" των 7-ιντσων κυκλοφοριών της Creep. ENG: Undoubtedly, one of the first and perhaps the most important record label in the independent Greek Rock scene was Creep Records. Surviving five creative years from 1982 to 1987 Creep Records released the material of some of the most significant Greek new wave and post punk bands. Throughout the difficulties and the whims of an era, this particular label highlighted the dark side of the local independent scene by giving the initiation to some once insignificant but nowadays essential bands such as The Reporters, Villa 21, South of No North, Yell-O-Yell, Cpt Nefos, Metro Decay, etc. Today some of those bands are considered to be the cornerstones of the local as well as the European new wave/post punk scene. For us the people behind Ten Thousand Eyes Blog the music released through Creep Records was and still is the beginning of a great musical journey on a worldwide scale and we'd like to thank all the people who worked with Creep for this.

Now about today's post, the compilation "Return of the Creeps - The Singles" is the "legacy" of all the 7inch releases, except for South of No North, Rehearsed Dreams and Angelo & His Egos. Those three bands never released a 7" single. Let's not forget to mention the introductory note by the founder of Creep Records Babis Dalidis in both Greek and English inside the cd booklet. Finally, this compilation is a tribute to Filotas Vaskalis (Yell-o-Yell) and Kostas Pothoulakis (The Reporters, Villa 21) who died at early age. Have a good listening to this one!!!

7-inch singles, April 2012 part three: Moist Device: 7'' & Dada Data split 7'' e.p. with In Trance 95

Αισίως φτάσαμε και στο τρίτο πακέτο 7-ιντσων "προσφορών"... όπου επανερχόμαστε στην Ελληνική new wave σκηνή με δύο σημαντικές -σήμερα πια δυσεύρετες- κυκλοφορίες. Αυτή τη φορά υπ' ευθύνη του -Psychopomp.

Για αρχή λοιπόν έχουμε τους Moist Device, post punk μπάντα από την Αθήνα, οι οποίοι κυκλοφόρησαν μόνο αυτό το ομώνυμο 7-ιντσο single το 1985 μέσα από την αγκαλιά της Enigma Records η οποία ήταν label που είχε κυρίως punk σχήματα στο ενεργητικό της. Οι Moist Device -σύμφωνα και με τις πληροφορίες που παίρνουμε από τη σελίδα της "Ανεξάρτησης", ήταν ένα σχήμα που έκανε πολλές ζωντανές εμφανίσεις και είχε μεγάλη αποδοχή από το κοινό. Κάποια από τα μέλη της μπάντας θήτευσαν πριν και μετά σε σχήματα της new wave/post punk σκηνής όπως οι Χωρίς Περιδέραιο, Libido Blume, Venericna Bolest, Γενιά του Χάους. Δυστυχώς, παρ' όλη την αποδοχή του κοινού δεν κυκλοφόρησαν τίποτε άλλο πέρα από αυτό καταπληκτικό 7-ιντσο, εννοείται πως θα ήταν πολύ ενδιαφέρον να βλέπαμε περισσότερα από τη δουλειά τους σε δίσκο. Επιπλέον, στη σελίδα τους στο myspace μπορείτε να ακούσετε τα 2 κομμάτια του singe ["Six Days (don't make a week)", "Youth Can Never Die"] σε live εκτελέσεις καθώς και 2 επιπλέον κομμάτια. Κάπου εδώ να πούμε πως το 7-ντσο single των Moist Device έχει παρουσιαστεί και παλιότερα από το φιλικό blog 'Tape Recorder'. Πρόκειται για ολοκαίνουργο 'rip'. Ελπίζουμε να το απολαύσετε.

Το δεύτερο 7-ιντσο single που φιλοξενούμε σήμερα είναι ένα θρυλικό 'split' e.p. στο οποίο συμμετέχουν δύο από τα σημαντικότερα σχήματα της εγχώριας ηλεκτρονικής ή "minimal synth" σκηνής, αν προτιμάτε. Πρόκειται για μια άτυπη συνεργασία μεταξύ των Dada Data και των In Trance 95 που αποτυπώθηκε σε βινύλιο από την Wipe Out το 1989. Οι Dada Data ήταν σχήμα του πρωτοπόρου παραγωγού-ηχολήπτη κτλ Coti K (βλ. Film Noir, Stereo Nova, The Flowers of Romance, κτλ). Οι Dada Data συμμετέχουν εδώ με το πανέμορφο-σχεδόν ανατολίτικο και σκοτεινό "Flesh In Blue". Ομοίως, και οι In Trance 95 έκαναν αισθητή την παρουσία τους στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1980 στο χώρο της ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής (έχουμε έμμεσα αναφερθεί σε αυτούς στις αναρτήσεις μας σε 2 συλλογές της θρυλικής Elfish Records: "Random Relations 1" και "Crash-A Tribute to J.G. Ballard"). Εδώ συμμετέχουν με το επιβλητικό "21st Century European Temptation" το οποίο ακολουθείται από μια πιο σύντομη version του με τίτλο "Temptation Two". Αυτό που θα ακούσετε είναι πανέμορφος minimal synth ήχος με ανάλογα σκοτεινά φωνητικά και παγερή ατμόσφαιρα. Ευχόμαστε καλή σας ακρόαση.

ENG:Fortunately, we have fulfilled the third packet of 7-inch rips for April 2012 and it's a good chance to re-visit the Greek new wave and post punk scene of the 80's by the means of two important releases, now scarce. This is a -Psychopomp's rip by the way.

Firstly, there's Moist Device, an Athenian post punk group who released their one and only 7-inch single in 1985 through Enigma Records -mostly a punk rock label. Moist Device -according to the info we got from the credible "Anexartisi" network- were a group who had lots of live appearances and was well received by the audience. Some of the band members have also worked with some prominent new wave/post punk bands of the period such as Choris Perideraio (=Without Necklace), Libido Blume, Venericna Bolest, Genia tou Chaous (=Chaos Generation). It was unfortunate that even though they were so well received, they never released anything further this homonymous single. It would be most insteresting if they released more material. They have a fan page at 'myspace' where you can listen to the 2 songs of the 7-inch ["Six Days (don't make a week)", "Youth Can Never Die"] plus a couple more songs -taken from a live performance circa 1985. Let's also note that the Moist Device 7-inch has been posted on the Tape Recorder's blog. Today we offer you a brand new rip. Hope you enjoy the music.

Today's second rip is of a split 7-inch e.p. whereas two of the most important formations in the electronic/minimal synth genre happen to meet. It is about an informal collaboration among Dada Data and In Trance 95, printed on vinyl through Wipe Out Records in 1989. Dada Data was the music vehicle of Coti K., the well-known musician-producer (etc) who has worked with Film Noir, Stereo Nova, The Flowers of Romance and more... They perform "Flesh In Blue" on 'A' side of the e.p., a beautiful, dark -almost oriental gem. In the same vein, In Trance 95 were perceived in the late 80's (we have already mentioned them indirectly in our posts about the Elfish Records compilations: "Random Relations 1" and "Crash-A Tribute to J.G. Ballard"). They perform one of their greatest songs; the impressive "21st Century European Temptation" and it's follow-up version "Temptation Two". This is great electronic/minimal synth music with proportionable dark vocals and chilling atmospherics. Enjoy this one too!!

7-inch singles, April 2012 part two: Blue Orchids: Symbolscrash 7'' & Poppi UK: Hip-Hop Lobotomy 7'' e.p.

Ελπίζουμε πως απολαύσατε τα 7-ιντσα των Normil Hawaiians και Modern English!

Σήμερα ανεβάζουμε το δεύτερο πακέτο 7-ιντσων singles το οποίο αυτή τη φορά είναι προσφορά του Unspeakable, τον οποίο και ευχαριστούμε θερμά.

Έχουμε λοιπόν για αρχή την πρώτη-πρώτη κυκλοφορία των ιστορικών Blue Orchids (βιογραφία εδώ) από το Manchester ο δημιουργικός πυρήνας των οποίων ήταν δύο πρώην-ιδρυτικά μέλη των The Fall, ο Martin Bramah και η Una Baines. To single τους αυτό με τίτλο "Symbolscrash" κυκλοφόρησε από την Rough Trade το 1980. Περιέχει δύο πανέμορφα, πλέον κλασικά post punk κομμάτια, το "The Flood" και "Disney Boys" η μουσική των οποίων περικλείει δύο φαινομενικά ανομοιογενείς επιρροές: την δυναμική της ανερχόμενης post punk μουσικής και την ωριμότητα της ψυχεδελικής δεκαετίας του 1960 ταυτόχρονα. Δεν είναι τυχαίο πως συμπαραγωγός του καταπληκτικού αυτού ντεμπούτου ήταν ο Mayo Thomson των Pere Ubu, η επιρροή των οποίων είναι έκδηλη στο κάπως άναρχο και παράφωνο χαρακτήρα των 2 κομματιών. Οπωσδήποτε είναι ένα άκουσμα που δεν θα'πρεπε να προσπεράσετε.

Στη συνέχεια, το δεύτερο 7-ιντσο που μας έστειλε ο Unspeakable είναι από ένα Ολλανδικό σχήμα που φιλοξενήσαμε παλιότερα, τους Poppi UK που ελπίζουμε πως θυμάστε από το ντεμπούτο τους "Walk on the Water" (ανάρτηση Οκτωβρίου 2010). Η μουσική προοπτική των Poppi UK ήταν πάντα αντισυμβατική. Ακόμα και στο 7-ιντσο e.p. με τίτλο "Hip Hop Lobotomy" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1990 (5 χρόνια μετά από το αξεπέραστο "Walk on the Water") παράγουν τέχνη και μουσική χωρίς να φοβούνται να εκδηλώσουν όποιες ηχητικές αντιρρήσεις προκύπτουν. Ορισμένες φορές ακούγονται τόσο φορτισμένοι συναισθηματικά που νομίζει κανείς πως θα εκραγούν εάν δεν αποδώσουν τη μουσική τους κατ' αυτόν τον τρόπο. Το "Hip Hop Lobotomy" περιέχει 4 κομμάτια τα οποία διατηρούν την προσοχή του ακροατή σε διαρκή εγρήγορση. Κυρίως για φανατικούς οπαδούς.

Και τα δύο 7-ιντσα βρίσκονται σε ένα αρχείο.

ENG: Hoping that you've already enjoyed the first part of our posts about some notable 7-inch releases (Normil Hawaiians, Modern English), we're ready to move onto the second packet of the same sort. This time the donation comes from The Unspeakable-whom we greatly thank...

First of all, there's the very first release of the Blue Orchids (their bio) from Manchester UK in 7-inch format entitled "Symbolscrash" through the legendary Rough Trade Records. The Blue Orchids were mainly consisted of Martin Bramah and Una Baines both former members of The Fall. "Symbolscrash" contains two post punk classics, "The Flood", "Disney Boys" both deriving through diverse influences; one is the uprising post punk dynamism and the other is a 60's psychedelic era maturity. We suppose that it wasn't by chance that Mayo Thomson of Pere Ubu co-produced this masterpiece. Moreover, Pere Ubu's influence is obvious resulting in the discordant and chaotic style of the songs. "Symbolscrash" is a must to listen to. Don't pass it by.

Also, Unspeakable's second donation for today is a rip of Holland's Poppi UK, whose debut "Walk on the Water" LP we've posted back in Oct 2010. This band's point of view had always been unconventional. Even in this 7-inch e.p. entitled "Hip Hop Lobotomy" released 5 years after their debut LP they still produce music and art combined. Definitely they aren't afraid of demonstrating whatsoever musical objection or controversy. Sometimes they are so much overloaded with emotion that it makes you think that they will explode unless they convey their music in that unconventional way. Four songs work towards that direction, keeping the listener's attention in full vigilance. Mostly for fans...

7-inch singles, April 2012 part one: Normil Hawaiians:Still Obedient 7'' & Modern English: Drowning Man

Αν και καθυστερήσαμε κάπως αυτή την καινούργια ανάρτηση, είμαστε διατεθειμένοι να "κερδίσουμε" τον χαμένο χρόνο μέσα στον Απρίλιο κυρίως με αναρτήσεις αξιόλογων 7-ιντσων από την Ελλάδα και τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο.

Το πρώτο "πακέτο" περιλαμβάνει δύο 7-ιντσα από τον καλό μας φίλο 'bX-59cppw', τα οποία δεν χρειάζονται ιδιαίτερες συστάσεις. Ιδιαίτερα όταν πρόκειται για μία από τις πρώτες πρώτες κυκλοφορίες των αγαπημένων μας Normil Hawaiians. Μόλις ένα χρόνο πρίν από το διπλό αριστούργημα "More Wealth than Money" κυκλοφόρησαν το 7-ιντσο single "Still Obedient/Should You Forget?" μέσω της Illuminated Records. Τα 2 κομμάτια που περιέχονται, συμβαδίζουν με τον πρωτόλειο και ακατέργαστο post punk ήχο, όμως κάπου διαφαίνεται πως υπήρχε γόνιμο έδαφος για τον πειραματισμό και την καινοτομία που επικρατεί στις μετέπειτα κυκλοφορίες. Απλά, πανέμορφο.

Το δεύτερο δώρο του φίλου 'bX-59cppw' για σήμερα είναι και το πρώτο single των πρωτοπόρων Modern English, οι οποίοι επίσης δεν χρειάζονται συστάσεις. Όσοι ακούν τη μουσική που αναρτείται σε αυτό το blog είναι σίγουρα υποψιασμένοι σχετικά με τους Modern English, οι οποίοι είναι επίσης καινοτόμοι στο είδος τους όσον αφορά την περίοδο μέχρι τα δύο πρώτα άλμπουμ ("Mesh And Lace", "After the Snow" 1981 και 1982 αντίστοιχα). Ήταν δε, ένα από τα πρώτα συγκροτήματα της θρυλικής 4AD και ήταν χαρακτηριστικός ο βαρύς, μοναδικός post punk ήχος τους, αρκετά εμφανής και στο "Drowning Man/Silent World" που παρουσιάζουμε σήμερα. Το 7ιντσο αυτό κυκλοφόρησε το 1979 στην Limp Records λίγο πριν ενσωματωθούν στην τότε ανεξάρτητη 4AD. Πράγματι ένα πανέμορφο δείγμα του πρώιμου σκοτεινού και δυναμικού ήχου των Modern English.

ENG: Even if this post took longer than expected, we are willing to catch up within April with some new posts regarding a few notable 7-inch releases from Greece and the rest of the world.

The first packet of 7-inches is actually a gift from our good friend 'bX-59cppw' and they don't need too long an introduction, especially when it comes to the first 7-inch release by the Normil Hawaiians. It was released in 1981 under Illuminated Records, just a year before the great double gem "More Wealth than Money" was released. The title of the single is "Still Obedient/Should You Forget?" and both its songs are close to an early rough post punk sound. It seems that through this primal roughness there was fertile ground for the experimentation and novelty of their latest material, though. Simply, a great release.

BX-59cppw's second gift is the very first release of the pioneer band Modern English, who also don't need any special introduction. Those of you who are familiar with our blog must know what the sound of Modern English is like -at least was, up until the first two LPs ("Mesh And Lace", "After the Snow", 1981 and 1982 respectively). They were one of the first to sign with the legendary 4AD label and their sound was altogether characteristic; heavy and dark post punk that is also evident in the "Drowning Man/Silent World" 7-inch single. Let us note that the 7-inch was released through Limp Records in 1979 just before they become incorporated in the (at that time) independent 4AD. Truly, a beautiful specimen of the early dark and powerful music of Modern English.
