Minimal Man: Slave Lullabyes, 1986 Penguin Records

Το μουσικό σχήμα που δημιούργησε στα τέλη του '70 ο πολυ-καλλιτέχνης (ζωγράφος, κινηματογραφιστής, μουσικός) Patrick Miller για να φτιάχνει soundrack για τις δικές του ταινίες ήταν οι Minimal Man, πλέον ένα από τα συγκροτήματα της πειραματικής post punk/industrial σκηνής που έχουν αφήσει σημαντικό έργο πίσω τους - κυρίως λόγω της προσωπικότητας του δημιουργού τους: οι Minimal Man είναι ο Patrick Miller και αντιστρόφως... Με απαράμιλλη δημιουργικότητα ύφανε σκοτεινά ηχοτοπία που αναπαριστούν τον ψυχισμό του σημερινού ανθρώπου, ενδεχομένως και του ίδιου του Miller. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό πως η ιδέα πίσω από τo όνομα του group καθρεφτίζει την άποψη του Milller για την μοναξιά, τη φτώχεια που τον τριγύριζε.: ο "μηδαμινός άνθρωπος" είναι ο άνθρωπος που "τα πάντα είναι εναντίον του". Επιπλέον, η μουσική τους είναι κατά κάποιο τρόπο το soundtrack του "μηδαμινού ανθρώπου"... άλλοτε οργισμένη, βιομηχανική κι απόκοσμη, άλλοτε ευαίσθητη και ατμοσφαιρική. Ταυτόχρονα μοιάζει να εξερευνά το έρεβος της ανθρώπινης ψυχής, αφήνοντας στο κενό μια υπαρξιακή κραυγή. Εάν αναλογιστούμε και την συμπάθεια του Miller για την λογοτεχνία των Phillip K. Dick, William S. Burroughs, J.G. Ballard και άλλων επιφανών συγγραφέων της 'παράλληλης πραγματικότητας', από μόνη της είναι μια τεράστια πηγή έμπνευσης.

Η δισκογραφική δουλειά των Minimal Man "χωρίζεται" νοητά σε δύο περιόδους. Η πρώτη είναι από το 1979 έως το 1984 κατά την οποία ο Miller έμενε στο San Fransisco στις ΗΠΑ, όπου και κυκλοφόρησαν οι δύο πρώτοι δίσκοι: "The Shroud of..." (1981) και "Safari" (1983). Αφού μετακόμισε στην Ευρώπη (Βρυξέλλες) κυκλοφόρησαν και τα "Sex With God" (1985), "Slave Lullabyes" (1986), "Hunger Is All She Has Ever Known" (1988) και "Pure" (1988). Από όλη αυτή τη δισκογραφία έχουμε μόνο το "Slave Lullabyes" να σας προσφέρουμε το οποίο είναι πραγματικά ένα όμορφο άλμπουμ με όλα τα χαρακτηριστικά που προαναφέραμε. Στην Ελλάδα κυκλοφόρησε από την Penguin και είναι ένα πολύ καλό δείγμα πειραματικής-avant garde post punk. Η μουσική του "Slave Lullabyes" είναι γεμάτη υπαρξιακή μελαγχολία άλλες φορές δοσμένη με ποιητική-κινηματογραφική απλότητα και άλλες φορές με εφιαλτικά ξεσπάσματα απογοήτευσης και θυμού. Η φωνή του Miller αν και ακούγεται άτονη (ή παραμορφωμένη) -από τα κύρια χαρακτηριστικά του- μοιάζει και η πιο κατάλληλη να "χρωματίσει" τα ηχοτοπία που ξεδιπλώνονται ένα προς ένα στη διάρκεια του άλμπουμ. Κάπου μέσα σε όλα αυτά θα αντικρύσουμε μέρη από τις ίδιες μας τις ζωές και τα βιώματα μας, κάπου ίσως θα ακούσουμε κάτι που να έχουμε πει ή ακούσει κατά το παρελθόν. Πριν σας αφήσουμε να βυθιστείτε στον ψυχισμό των Minimal Man ας σταθούμε για λίγο στη δουλειά του εξωφύλλου που δείχνει ένα κατεστραμμένο πρόσωπο σε πολλές διαφορετικές πόζες. Ίσως είναι το πρόσωπο του "μηδαμινού ανθρώπου". Στα επιπλέον θετικά του δίσκου είναι και η συμμετοχή μουσικών όπως του Peter Principle των Tuxedomoon και άλλων της avant garde σκηνής. Σε τελική αναάλυση, αν και η μουσική τους μοιάζει αποστασιοποιημένη και παγερή, θα υποστηρίζαμε πως είναι βαθιά ανθρώπινη και ελπίζουμε πως το "Slave Lullabyes" θα σας συναρπάσει ώστε να εντρυφήσετε στον σκοτεινό κόσμο των Minimal Man. ENG: The music formation created by multi-artist (painter, musician, cinematographist) Patrick Miller in 1979, in order to serve as a vehicle for making soundtracks for his own films were Minimal Man. They were one of the most distinguished groups of the experimental post punk/industrial genre. Patrick Miller was fully responsible for the significant work they left behind. After all, Minimal Man were Patrick Miller and vice versa. He weaved dark soundscapes unparallelled in creativity and reflecting into the psyche of the modern man, most possibly his own too. Evidently, Miller's philosophy around the group's name could be summarised in the concept of the man "with everything against him". Indeed we deal with the soundtrack of the 'insignificant man'...that sometimes sounds raged, industrial and angry, sensitive and atmospheric as well. Moreover, it explores the erebus of the human soul, letting an existential outcry into its emptiness. Considering that Miller was also a fan of sci-fi literature; Phillip K. Dick, William S. Burroughs, J.G. Ballard and other prominent authors of the 'parallel reality', that alone is a huge source of inspiration, isn't it?

Minimal Man released six LPs: the first two "The Shroud of..." (1981) and "Safari" (1983) LPs when Miller lived in San Fransisco, and the rest "Sex With God" (1985), "Slave Lullabyes" (1986), "Hunger Is All She Has Ever Known" (1988), "Pure" (1988) LPs after Miller moved to Brussels, Belgium.

Unfortunately, the only LP we have available for you is "Slave Lullabyes" which is a beautifully made experimental avant-garde post punk record, released in Greece by Penguin Records (licenced from Play It Again Sam). "Slave Lullabyes" is soaked with existential melancholia that flows through poetic, cinematographic minimalism at times interrupted by nightmarish outbreaks of disappointment and anger. Miller's voice truly sounds flat (or at times artificially distorted) that is most appropriate for "colouring" this music. We ourselves could reflect our lives into some of those emotions as well. Just before we let you sink into Minimal Man's moody psyche let us mention the work on the cover; it portrays a damaged face in several poses. Maybe the faces of the 'minimal man'? Among the many positive aspects about this LP is the participation of distinguished artists, such as Peter Principle and Luc Van Lieshout of Tuxedomoon. In final analysis, even if Minimal Man's music sounds cold and detached we'd just say that it's altogether human. We hope that you'll get fascinated with Minimal Man and "Slave Lullabyes" LP and thus indulge into their obscure realm. Have a good listening to this one!!!

English Subtitles: Tannoy 7'' 1981 plus Original Dialogue LP 1982, Glass Records

Ένα από τα λιγότερο γνωστά συγκροτήματα της post punk ήταν οι English Subtitles από την Μεγάλη Βρετανία. Άφησαν πίσω τους εξαιρετικά δείγματα γραφής (δύο 7ιντσα, ένα flexi και ένα LP), μικρή σχετικά δισκογραφία, αλλά αρκετά σημαντική για να περνάει απαρατήρητη. Είναι από εκείνα τα συγκροτήματα που η μουσική τους νομίζεις πως την ξέρεις από πάντα - σαν να είναι εντυπωμένη σε βαθύτερη ή παλιότερη μνήμη. Με άλλα λόγια, η μουσική τους είναι πρωτότυπη-αρχέτυπη post punk. Σήμερα έχουμε δύο "δώρα" από την δισκογραφική δουλειά των English Subtitles. Το πρώτο είναι το 7ιντσο "Tannoy/Cars On Fire" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1981 στην Glass Records και είναι μια προσφορά του φίλου bX-59cppw -τον οποίο και ευχαριστούμε για την προσφορά. Το δεύτερο "δώρο" είναι το LP τους "Original Dialogue" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1982 επίσης στην Glass Records και μας έρχεται από τον μόνιμα 'συνήθη ύποπτο' The Unspeakable ο οποίος μας πρόσφερε το δικό του rip. Αλλά ας πούμε και ένα-δύο λόγια για τη μουσική. Όπως είπαμε πιο πάνω αυτό που διαπιστώνει κανείς είναι η πρωτόλεια άποψη και η απίστευτη ενέργεια στη μουσική τους. Επιπλέον, η απλότητα της βασικής rhythm section κάνει τον ακροατή να θέλει να γίνει ένα με τον ρυθμό. Επιπλέον, οι "κοφτερές" κιθάρες πραγματικά σε στοιχειώνουν, ακούγεται τόσο παλιό όσο και νέο. Η ερμηνεία στο "Tannoy" δείχνει τις μεγάλες δυνατότητες του τραγουδιστή Roy Gordon στο να αποδίδει σχεδόν παρανοϊκά τέτοιες άρτιες συνθέσεις. Παρεπιπτόντως, στο "Tannoy/Cars On Fire" παίζει και ο ντράμερ των The Fall, Karl Burns. Όσον αφορά τη μουσική του άλμπουμ, είναι εξίσου πρωτότυπη και δυναμική και ήδη από το πρώτο κομμάτι "Lost" επιβεβαιώνεται πόσο σπουδαίοι είναι οι English Subtitles. Η μουσική γίνεται ακόμη καλύτερη στο "Water 1" και τον καταπληκτικό-post punk ύμνο "The Baby Cries". Η δεύτερη πλευρά του δίσκου περιέχει υλικό από ζωντανή ηχογράφηση (Electric Ballroom, London 29/2/1980) που αποδεικνύει πόσο καλοί ήταν και στις ζωντανές εμφανίσεις. Εδώ τα τραγούδια είναι πιο ωμά, πιο κοφτερά με αποκορύφωμα το "Machine".
Απολαύστε λοιπόν ένα από τα καλύτερα post punk συγκροτήματα, σίγουρα θα σας μείνουν αξέχαστοι (όλα μαζί σε ένα αρχείο).

ENG: One of the less-known post punk groups is English Subtitles from the UK. They left some excellent work behind (two 7inch singles, a flexi single and an LP) which is a relatively short discography, altogether too important to be unnoticed. English Subtitles are one of those groups whose music sounds familiar as if it lies deep into the memory from within an obscure past. In other words, their music is the archetypal post punk. Today we have two "gifts" for you regarding their music: the first one comes directly from our friend bX-59cppw and it is the superb 7inch "Tannoy/Cars On Fire" released on Glass Records in 1981. The second "gift" comes from the usual suspect 'The Unspeakable' and it is English Subtitles' one and only 1982 LP entitled "Original Dialogue" also on Glass Records. Let's talk about the music though. As mentioned above, the very first thing that one might discover about them is this original energy in their music combined with a simple but firm rhythm section and 'incisive' guitars. The effect really stays with you in a haunting way, as it sounds as good as old and as great as new. In addition, the singer Roy Gordon conveys skillfully some paranoia all the way through "Tannoy". By the way, Karl Burns the drummer of The Fall takes part in the 7inch as well. In the same vein, the LP proves to be original and powerful already from the first song "Lost". It gets even better in "Water 1" as well as the outstanding "The Baby Cries". The songs on side two come from a live recording on Febryary 29th 1980 at the Electric Ballroom in London, capturing their live energy at an early period. One of the best songs is the sharp and incisive "Machine" among other great songs played live.

Scoria: Both 1986, Famous Music Records

Είχαμε παρουσιάσει τους Scoria και το πρώτο τους ομώνυμο e.p. σε κάποια από τις πρώτες αναρτήσεις μας τον Αύγουστο του 2010. Σήμερα έχουμε τη δεύτερη και τελευταία αγγλόφωνη κυκλοφορία τους με τίτλο "Both" στην Famous Music (σημερινή F.M. Records). Οπωσδήποτε ήταν ένα από τα πιο χαρακτηριστικά συγκροτήματα της δεκαετίας του 1980 με δικό τους ήχο και με μεγάλη εμπειρία ζωντανών εμφανίσεων από το 1984 έως το 1987. Παρόλ' αυτά δεν συνέχισαν περαιτέρω την εμπνευσμένη και καλή πορεία τους έως ότου επανεμφανίστηκαν στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 1990 για άλλο ένα δίσκο - αυτή τη φορά με ελληνικό στίχο. Το "Both" του 1986 [με αυτό το πανέμορφο εξώφυλλο] είναι ένα άριστο LP φτιαγμένο πάνω στα χνάρια του πρώτου και καταπληκτικού ομότιτλου e.p. Το "Both" επίσης εξερευνά κυρίως τα γνώριμα σε μας post punk μονοπάτια επιμένοντας στον καυστικό στίχο. Ξεχωρίζουν με την πρώτη τα "Time is Money", "X", και το καταπληκτικό "Phobia" που ανοίγει την Β πλευρά. Επίσης υπάρχει και μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα διασκευή στο "The Passion of Lovers" των Bauhaus, την οποία οι Scoria έχουν πραγματικά φέρει στα μέτρα τους (σημειώνουν στο οπισθόφυλλο: "cause we love this song"). Τα υπόλοιπα κομμάτια δεν θα αφήσουν κανέναν ασυγκίνητο. Αν και το παρόν άλμπουμ έχει "ανέβει" και παλιότερα σε φιλικό blog, αυτό είναι ένα καινούργιο και καθαρότερο 'rip'. Καλή ακρόαση.

One of our first posts back in August 2010 was Scoria's first homonymous e.p. Today we present their second and last "English-versed" release entitled "Both" on Famous Music Records (today's F.M. Records, famous release distributor in Greece and abroad). Scoria were definitely one of the most distinctive post punk groups of the 1980's, they had their own style and a large experience of live performances from 1984 up to 1987. Despite their great reputation they disbanded in 1987 but returned in the mid 90's with a new Greek-versed release. "Both" LP released in 1986 [with this beautiful front cover] is an outstanding release upon the same infallible post punk vein of their 1985 e.p. It explores familiar new wave/post punk trails and insists on quality and caustic verse. Upon first hearing "Time is Money", "X" and the astounding "Phobia" are to be distinguished. In addition, there's a quite interesting cover of Bauhaus' "The Passion of Lovers" that Scoria have mastered into their own style (as they note in the back cover "cause we love this song"). As for the rest of the songs, they are quite interesting too. Even if this LP has been re posted by a friendly blog, we have brought a fresh rip here. Have a good listening to this excellent LP.

Libido Blume: Colours Melting 1986, Δικαίωμα Διάβασης

Πρώτη ανάρτηση και ελαφρώς καθυστερημένη για το 2012 και αποφασίσαμε να δώσουμε ένα δυναμικό ξεκίνημα με τους Libido Blume οι οποίοι είναι το σχήμα που διαδέχθηκε τους πρωτοπόρους Cpt Nefos και φυσικά συμμετείχε ο Άκης Μπογιατζής. Η πρώτη λοιπόν κυκλοφορία του "νέου" new wave σχήματος μέσω της δισκογραφικής Δικαίωμα Διάβασης (η σημερινή Di Di Music που πλέον διοργανώνει μόνο συναυλίες) το 1986 είχε τίτλο "Colours Melting" και ήταν η φυσική συνέχεια των Cpt Nefos. Οι συνθέσεις των Libido Blume αν και μοιάζουν απλοϊκές αποδεικνύονται ώριμες και ευθείς - γεμάτες post punk ενεργητικότητα, καθώς και διάσπαρτες garage αλλά και funk επιρροές. Στο άλμπουμ θα βρείτε το καταπληκτικό "In My Room" σε διαφορετική εκτέλεση από αυτή που βρίσκεται στην συλλογή Outsiders (επίσης της Δικαίωμα Διάβασης), αλλά και τα "Colours Melting #1", "Vive La Difference", πραγματικά κομμάτια-δυναμίτες. Ένα καταπληκτικό άλμπουμ... καλή ακρόαση σε όλους !!!

First post for the new year - although slightly delayed - and we decided to give a dynamical kickstart with the Libido Blume, the new music formation that succeeded the pioneers Cpt Nefos included Akis Boyatzis too. Consequently, the nouveau new wave band released their first LP via Dikaioma Diavasis [(=right of crossing) nowadays under the name Di Di Music organizing concerts] in 1986 entitled "Colours Melting" and it sounds as the natural continuation of Cpt Nefos. Although the songs seem to be simplistic, eventually they prove to be mature and direct - filled with post punk energy, as well as scattered influences from garage and/or funk. Accordingly, the album is full of great songs such as the great "In My Room" -an earlier version of the song in the legendary "Outsiders" compilation (also via Dikaioma Diavasis). Similarly in the same vein, and to name a few more explosive songs: "Colours Melting #1" and Vive La Difference". Have a good listening to this great LP !!!

Normil Hawaiians: More Wealth Than Money 2xLP, 1982 & What's Going On? LP, 1984 Illuminated Records

Σχεδόν στο κλείσιμο του 2011 ετοιμάσαμε κάτι πολύ ξεχωριστό για τους αναγνώστες μας. Η αλήθεια είναι πως το 2011 ήταν μια δύσκολη χρονιά και δυστυχώς το μέλλον δεν προβλέπεται καθόλου καλύτερο. Εμείς από τη μεριά μας ξεπροβοδίζουμε κάθε χρονιά με μπόλικη μουσική και πιο συγκεκριμένα φέτος με ένα συγκρότημα σαν τους Normil Hawaiians που δεν είναι ιδιαίτερα γνωστοί παρά μόνο σε λίγους που ασχολούνται κάπως περισσότερο με την ανεξάρτητη μουσική σκηνή. Η μεγάλη αυτή παρέα των "Family Hawaiians" (ήταν και έτσι γνωστοί) ζούσαν μαζί και έγραφαν μουσική και κατάφεραν να κυκλοφορήσουν αρκετά singles, eps και δύο άλμπουμ σε σχεδόν 5 δημιουργικά έτη από το 1979 μέχρι το 1984. Το συγκρότημα ξεκίνησε την πορεία στο άγνωστο σαν παρέα τριών φίλων, των Guy Smith, Jim Lusted, και Janet Armstrong που απολάμβαναν να ανταλάσσουν ιδέες και να δημιουργούν γράφοντας μουσική. Με την πάροδο των ετών το σχήμα άλλαζε διαρκώς και μεγάλωνε διαρκώς. Έτσι, με γρήγορους ρυθμούς εξελισσόταν μέσα από τις έντονες πολιτικές εντάσεις της εποχής (Θάτσερ) και τα μέλη του όντες μέλη καταλήψεων και ομάδων που δήλωναν με τη στάση τους αντίθετοι αλλά και διαφορετικοί στο παρόν κατεστημένο σύστημα ιδεών. Το γεγονός δε πως άλλαζαν διαρκώς (με μοναδικό σταθερό μέλος τον Guy Smith μέχρι τέλους) γέννησε δύο εξαιρετικά άλμπουμ, τα "More Wealth Than Money" και "What's Going On?", μοναδικά για ξεχωριστούς λόγους το καθένα.

Το πρώτο τους LP με τον αινιγματικό τίτλο "More Wealth Than Money" κυκλοφόρησε το 1982 και ανέδειξε αρκετό από το υλικό της πιο δημιουργικής περιόδου τους- αφού το διπλό και "χορταστικό" αυτό άλμπουμ πλέον θεωρείται πια ως ένα από τα καλύτερα LPs στο χώρο. Δυσεύρετο LP βέβαια, αλλά είναι ένας δίσκος που ικανοποιεί ίσως τα πιο απαιτητικά αυτιά και πράγματι μετά από τόσα ακούσματα μπορούμε να πούμε πως είναι δύσκολο να βρεί κανείς ελαττώματα σε αυτό το άλμπουμ. Από τη σχετικά σύντομη διάρκεια των "Red Harvest" και "Yellow Rain", τα σχεδόν δεκάλεπτα "Left Alone With Her Pipe" και "Travelling West" που ολοκληρώνουν το αριστούργημα πλέον στην 4η πλευρά, δίνουν μια άλλη αίσθηση σχεδόν ονειρική, new wave/post punk φιλτραρισμένη με ψυχεδέλεια και progressive rock από τις παλιές καλές μέρες. Το άλμπουμ βρίθει από μεγαλόπνοες ιδέες οι οποίες μετεξελίσσονται σε 7-λεπτα, 8-λεπτα και 9-λεπτά τραγούδια όπως αυτά που προαναφέραμε αλλά και τα "British Warm", "Other Ways of Knowing", και "Sally IV" που κάνουν το άλμπουμ αυτό σχεδόν επικό. Μεσολαβούν και άλλα αριστουργήματα μικρότερης διάρκειας και όχι σημασίας που συνδέουν και ενδυναμώνουν το πολυσυλλεκτικό και πολυεπίπεδο "More Wealth Than Money". Αυτό το άλμπουμ είναι μια πολύ καλή ιδέα για επανακυκλοφορία (σε βινύλιο εννοείται) γιατί η τιμή του είναι κάπως τσουχτερή.

Το επόμενo άλμπουμ τους με τίτλο "What's Going On?" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1984 δεν μοιάζει πολύ απλόχερο μουσικά όπως το διπλό και πολύ ώριμο "More Wealth...". Στο "What's Going On?" υπάρχει μια χαλαρότητα και αφέλεια, αλλά και μια τάση για εξερεύνηση. Οπωσδήποτε έχουν αλλάξει πολλά για τους Hawaiians μέσα στα δύο χρόνια που μεσολάβησαν, κυρίως δυσκολίες για το συγκρότημα παρά δρόμοι στρωμένοι με άνθη. Αλλαγές στη σύνθεση, ίσως και κάποιες διαφωνίες να διαμόρφωσαν ένα δύσκολο και πειραματικό δίσκο, ο οποίος και πάλι για διαφορετικούς λόγους είναι μοναδικός. Αυτό που χαρακτηρίζει το δεύτερο άλμπουμ είναι μια μινιμαλιστική απλότητα, παράλληλα και μια "μη-αμεσότητα" που όμως φαίνεται πως κατέχει καλύτερα με αυτόν τον τρόπο το πνεύμα των Normil Hawaiians. Κοινό βέβαια γνώρισμα με τον πρώτο δίσκο είναι αυτή η φοβερή ικανότητα να χτίζουν ατμόσφαιρα, να στήνουν πανέμορφα ηχοτοπία σαν ταινίες μικρού μήκους, όπου η μουσική τους παίρνει σάρκα και οστά. Το "What's Going On?" θα λέγαμε πάντως πως αν και μοιάζει μισοτελειωμένο και αποτελείται κυρίως από αυτοσχεδιασμούς έρχεται πολύ κοντά στην ταυτότητά τους ως συγκρότημα που γεννήθηκε μέσα στο περιβάλλον αυθεντικών κοινωνιών που ερχόντουσαν σε ευθεία αντιπαράθεση με το κυρίαρχο κοινωνικό-πολιτικό σύστημα, αφού η κοσμοθέασή τους ήταν ασφαλώς πιο ανθρώπινη, και ασφαλώς γόνιμα αντιδραστική. Χαρακτηριστικό δε είναι το τρίτο κομμάτι με τίτλο "Louise Michel" το οποίο είναι αφιερωμένο στην αναρχική αγωνίστρια της Παρισινής Κομούνας Louise Michel και οι στίχοι του κομματιού είναι η αυτούσια κατάθεση υπεράσπισής της στη δίκη του 1871, όπου και αντιμετώπισε την απειλή της εκτέλεσης. Πανέμορφες στιγμές του δίσκου, τα "Ignorance Is Strength", "The Big Lie" και το 9 λεπτο "Market Place" το οποίο είναι ουσιαστικά δύο αυτοσχεδιασμοί μαζί.

Ελπίζουμε πως θα απολαύσετε στο έπακρο τη δημιουργικότητα των Normil Hawaiians και όσοι δεν τους έχετε ακόμα ανακαλύψει, θα συνειδητοποιήσετε πως όντως υπάρχει ακόμα κάτι εκεί έξω που δεν έχετε ακούσει. Normil Hawaiians: What's Going On? (Illuminated Records, 1984)

Only a few days before the end of 2011 and we have prepared a special upload for you. The truth is that it was a difficult period and the future doesn't seem to be any better. Nevertheless, music is our aim and we send off every year with lots of music, and this time we are posting the Normil Hawaiians. This band is not well known to everyone as they should be, except to those who dig deep into alternative music. They were also called the "Family Hawaii", they lived and wrote music together. They have released a couple 7inch singles, EPs and two LPs in almost 5 creative years from 1979 to 1984. In the beginning they were a company of three friends Guy Smith, Jim Lusted, and Janet Armstrong who enjoyed writing music together. Along the years, this "Family" grew larger and even more creative too. Thus they evolved in terms of music and in terms of ideology, as most of the members involved with the band were also involved with squats and other similar socio-political acts (against Thatcherism among other "-isms"). Besides the the fact that the only one stable member was Guy Smith the rest of the personnel was constantly changing or renewed, thus enriched the Normil Hawaiians with ideas and inspiration resulting in the release of two unique studio LPs: "More Wealth Than Money" and "What's Going On?".

The first LP with the ambiguous title "More Wealth Than Money" was released in 1982 and included material of their most creative period in its double LP length and it's considered to be one of the best LPs in the genre. This is a hard-to-find album but altogether satisfying in quality. The short-lengthed "Red Harvest" and "Yellow Rain" in the A side and the lengthy "Left Alone With Her Pipe" and "Travelling West" in the D side are mere examples of what this dreamy album is about, filtered with psychedelic and progressive rock into a new wave/post punk outfit. Moreover, more lengthy (7-8 min) masterpieces "British Warm", "Other Ways of Knowing", "Sally IV" complete this superb epic album. A re-release of this great LP is compelling since it is a hard-to-find plus expensive item.

Their 1984 LP "What's Going On?" is more sophisticated yet loose compared to their first. There have been many changes over the two years since their last release, possible disagreements among the core members and the arrival of new personnel shaped this LP which turned to be a yet another unique release for different reasons compared to the first. "What's Going On?" is mostly characterised by a minimal simplicity and thriftiness, a "negative immediacy". Although this second LP is mostly a compilation of various improvisations, it is still as atmospheric as the first LP. All the above seem to possess the Normil Hawaiians' true spirit of freedom and independence. Their engagement with socio-political and authentic radical communities bear songs such as the third track "Louise Michel" which apparently is a tribute to the French anarchist Louise Michel, a member of the Paris Comune. The recitation within the song is her defence speech from the Paris Comune trials in 1871. There are also further great moments in this album such as "Ignorance Is Strength", "The Big Lie" and the atmospheric 9-min long "Market Place".

The Palace At 4 a.m.: Untamed World 1982, Collective Ego

Για τους The Palace At 4 a.m. από το Τορόντο του Καναδά δυστυχώς δεν έχουμε βρεί καμία πληροφορία. Αρκούμαστε μόνο στην ίδια τη μουσική... Προφανώς το mini-LP "Untamed World" είναι η μοναδική τους κυκλοφορία στο μάλλον δικό τους label Collective Ego. Πρόκειται για ένα μικρό αριστούργημα από την σχετικά άγνωστη Καναδική new wave σκηνή. Ο ήχος τους βασισμένος κυρίως σε μια σπειροειδή και "κυκλοθυμική" rhythm section, αλλά και σε ισχνά samplers που θα μπορούσαν να χαρακτηριστούν σύγχρονα εν μέσω μιας λιτής και απέριττης ενορχήστρωσης. Κυρίαρχη είναι και η παρουσία των πνευστών (φλάουτο, σαξόφωνο) τα οποία δίνουν μια νωχελική νότα, προσέξτε το "Untamed World" που μοιάζει σαν να έρχεται από τη δεκαετία του 1960. Επιπλέον, το ομώνυμο "The Palace At 4 a.m." που ανοίγει το δίσκο, δεν θα αφήσει κανένα αδιάφορο με την έντονη πνευστή δύναμή του. Κλείνοντας, μετράμε στα συν του "Untamed World" και τα αποστασιοποιημένα φωνητικά (Ihor Holubizky) τα οποία προσθέτουν στην πειραματική και μινιμαλισττική προσέγγιση των The Palace At 4 a.m. μέχρι το τέλος του δίσκου, στο σχεδόν μυστηριακό "The Man Who Never Sleeps" κοντά στο ύφος των πολυαγαπημένων μας Tuxedomoon. Nα σημειωθεί ότι το συγκεκριμένο άλμπουμ δεν έχει "ανέβει" από κανένα blog. Καλή σας ακρόαση, ελπίζουμε πως θα σας αρέσει.

Unfortunately, we haven't found any information about the Canadian group The Palace At 4 a.m., however, their music alone will have to do. The mini-LP "Untamed World" is their sole release in the -most probably- self created Collective Ego label. This mini-LP is a tiny gem out of the Canadian new wave and alternative rock scene, of which we are totally unfamiliar with. The Palace At 4 a.m.'s sound is mostly based on a spiraling and moody rhythm section as well as some mild samplers and sounds. Because of this and their thrifty arrangement, they could be mistaken for a contemporary band. Saxophone and flute are dominant as well, as they apparently sound somehow indolent, but listen closely to the song "Untamed World", it sounds as if was composed in the sixties. Also, the homonymous opening song "The Palace At 4 a.m." will surely intrigue you with its wind intensity. In conclusion, Ihor Holubizky's detached vocals are certainly a plus to the whole minimalisic approach leading us all the way to the superb -almost sacramental- "The Man Who Never Sleeps", reminiscent of Tuxedomoon. Villa 21: Men Of Clay 1985, Creep Records

Πριν από ένα χρόνο -ίσως και περισσότερο- είχαμε παρουσιάσει τον πρώτο δίσκο των Villa 21 με τίτλο "A Ghost On the Move". Σήμερα θα παρουσιάσουμε το δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους που κυκλοφόρησε επίσης στην Creep Records το 1985 με τον τίτλο "Men Of Clay". Το εν λόγω άλμπουμ είναι κατά την ταπεινή μας γνώμη ισάξιο, αν όχι καλύτερο από το πρώτο. Ηχογραφήθηκε ζωντανά στο στούντιο και διατηρεί την ενέργεια μιας ζωντανής εμφάνισης σε όλη του τη διάρκεια. Άψογη ενορχήστρωση και εκτέλεση των τραγουδιών αρχής γενομένης από το ομώνυμο "Men Of Clay" που κυριολεκτικά 'σπάει κόκκαλα': "Men of clay fear not to pray..." και μόλις μια ανάσα μας χωρίζει από το το επίμονο τρέμολο στο μπάσο και τα χειμαρρώδη τύμπανα που καθοδηγούν αυτόν τον καταπληκτικό post punk δίσκο. Οι κιθάρες στριγγλίζουν από αγωνία ενώ ο Κώστας Ποθουλάκης ο οποίος απαγγέλει τους στίχους του σχεδόν σαν να προσπαθεί να εξορκίσει τον θάνατο, τη ζωή, τον έρωτα, την προδοσία, την μοναξιά... Μετά τα εξίσου καταπληκτικά "Meaning" και "Creature" έρχεται μιά ακόμη έκπληξη. Η επανεκτέλεση του δεύτερου τους single "Move" σε σχεδόν επτάλεπτη διάρκεια. Η ενέργεια που περιγράψαμε πιο πάνω διακατέχει και το νέο "Move", Ακούγοτάς το λίγο-πολύ καταλαβαίνουμε πως θα ήταν οι Villa 21 στη σκηνή, όσοι δεν προλάβαμε να τους δούμε ποτέ. Κι όμως εξήμισυ λεπτά περνούν πολύ γρήγορα...και το θορυβώδες "Still Can Burn" παίρνει τη σκυτάλη, φιλοδοξώντας να δώσει περισσότερη ενέργεια στον δίσκο. Όλα τα όργανα μοιάζουν σαν να παραβγαίνουν, με το μπάσο να είναι νικητής, έπειτα τα φωνητικά στη δεύτερη θέση, γεμάτα οδύνη. Γνώριμες μελωδίες επανέρχονται με το "New Days" που χαλαρώνει κάπως τους ρυθμούς σε ένα αργόσυρτο χορό με ξαφνικές μα παροδικές "εκρήξεις". Στο ίδιο μοτίβο κινείται και το "Birth". Τέλος, το πένθιμο "Damnation" ξεκινά με την κιθάρα που δεν ξεχωρίζει από την επίσης θρηνητική κραυγή του Ποθουλάκη η οποία μεταμορφώνεται σιγά σιγά σε τραγούδι...

Πρέπει εδώ να πούμε πως το LP "Men Of Clay" στέκεται στο χρονικό σημείο της μετέπειτα εξέλιξης του συγκροτήματος σε ένα καθαρόαιμο rock 'n' roll σχήμα με έντονες garage αποχρώσεις. Από εδώ και μετά οι Villa 21 ακούγονται αρκετά διαφορετικοί, καθόλου κακοί βέβαια και εννοείται πως θα ξανατιμήσουν το blog μας με τις υπόλοιπες κυκλοφορίες τους. Καλή ακρόαση λοιπόν, σίγουρα θα απολαύσετε αυτή τη δισκάρα.

Villa 21: Men Of Clay (Creep Records, 1985)

ENG: About a year ago or even more, we presented Villa 21's first album "A Ghost On the Move". Today we bring their second LP also released by Creep records in 1985 and entitled "Men Of Clay". By the way, we humbly support the idea that this second LP is equivalent to the first if not better than the first. The album was recorded in one day live session at the studio, preserving the energy of a live performance all the way through. Nevertheless, the arrangement is effective in conveying the original style of Villa 21 even from the homonymous track "Men Of Clay" that literally "kicks ass": "Men of clay fear not to pray..." and just a breath away here comes the persistent trembling yet powerful sound of the bass guitar along with the roar of drums leading this excellent post punk music. The guitars scream in agony following the voice of Costas Pothulakis. He recites his verses almost as if he is trying to exorcise life, death, pain, love, betrayal, loneliness... After the equally great "Meaning" and "Creature" follows a surprise; there's a new version of their second single "Move"rambling on for almost 7 minutes. We believe that Villa 21 had been a great live band, too bad we never had the chance to enjoy them, yet this record should be reminiscent of their legendary stage performances. Nevertheless, seven minutes go by very fast and the noisy and violent post punk anthem "Still Can Burn" enters side Two. One might think that the instruments are involved in some kind of a race and the bass guitar is the winner, then Pothulakis' voice comes next striving with agony. Some familiar tunes swirl around as "New Days" and "Birth" are slowing down a bit. Finally, the mournful "Damnation" begins with the shrieking vocals which eventually become singing..."Ow-how, Ow-how"....

We must say here that after releasing the "Men Of Clay" LP Villa 21 gradually mutated into a rock n' roll/garage band. No matter what, we will post more of their work in the near future. Have a good listening to this one, we are certain that you will enjoy this great music.

Spider's Web: The Wonderful Weaver mLP 1991, Elfish Records

Δεν έχει περάσει πολύς καιρός από τότε που φιλοξενήσαμε δίσκο της Elfish. Και βέβαια εννοείται πως είναι μία από τις πιο αγαπημένες μας δισκογραφικές, αλλά αυτός δεν είναι ο μόνος λόγος που την αναφέρουμε ξανά και σε τόσο σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα. Σήμερα λοιπόν, παρουσιάζουμε την πρώτη της κυκλοφορία, το μίνι-LP "The Wonderful Weaver" του 1991 από τους Spider's Web. Το συγκρότημα είναι δημιουργία του Σπύρου Φάρου, ο οποίος υπήρξε βασικό μέλος των θρυλικών Yell-o-Yell, των Headleaders, των Rehearsed Dreams και αργότερα των This Fluid. Ο Γιάννης Παπαϊωάννου ιδρυτής της Elfish επίσης συμμετέχει στο συγκρότημα. Τα υπόλοιπα μέλη είναι Μάκης Φάρος (This Fluid, Headquake, Raw) και Λεωνίδας Παπαδάκης (Melting Ashes, Headquake), δηλαδή μουσικοί με μεγάλη πείρα και θητεία σε επίσης αξιόλογα σχήματα. Το "The Wonderful Weaver" λοιπόν απαρτίζεται από 6 κομμάτια με προφανείς new wave επιρροές και προσμίξεις από άλλα παρεμφερή μουσικά είδη. Είναι έντονη η διαφοροποίηση από τα συνηθισμένα ακούσματα των αρχών της δεκαετίας του 1990 και οπωσδήποτε δεν θυμίζει σε πολλά τον ήχο άλλων ελληνικών συγκροτημάτων της εποχής. Η μουσική ιδιοφυϊα του Σ. Φάρου μαζί και η αναζήτηση μουσικών δρόμων μέσω του πειραματισμού μετατρέπουν το "The Wonderful Weaver" από ένα απλό άκουσμα σε ένα πολύπλοκο αριστούργημα. Κατά κάποιο τρόπο η μουσική τους επιβεβαιώνει το όνομά τους: πρόκειται για ένα λεπτεπίλεπτο και λεπτομερές δημιούγημα, καλοφτιαγμένο σαν ιστός αράχνης. Το "The Wonderful Weaver" σε "πιάνει" σχεδόν με την πρώτη στον ασπρόμαυρο ιστό του, ειδικά το εντυπωσιακό Spirit of the Night και το γλυκόπικρο Cheap Wine-Cheap Trip, αλλά και το εισαγωγικό Jolly Fat Fellow. Τέλος, το λευκό χρώμα που κυριαρχεί στο artwork δίνει επίσης μια μινιμαλιστική χροιά, αλλά και μια κατεύθυνση που ακολουθήθηκε στα περισσότερα άλμπουμ της Elfish. Καλή ακρόαση λοιπόν...

Spider's Web: The Wonderful Weaver (Elfish, 1992)

ENG: It hasn't been very long since we posted another Elfish release. Indeed, Elfish Records is one of our favourite labels, however, this isn't the only reason why we mention it again so soon. Today we have the ever first release of the label, a mini-LP entitled "The Wonderful Weaver" by the Spider's Web, released in 1991. Spider's Web is a creation of Spiros Faros who used to be involved with the legendary Yell-o-Yell, the Headleaders, Rehearsed Dreams and with This Fluid later on. Giannis Papaioannou the founder of Elfish Records is also involved with the group - he was involved with Rehearsed Dreams and Raw, too!! The other members were Makis Faros (This Fluid, Headquake, Raw) and Leondidas Papadakis (Melting Ashes, Headquake), all of them experienced musicians. "Wonderful Weaver" is comprised of 6 songs with a definite new wave-ish backbone as well as other influences. Spider's Web do differenciate themselves from other Greek indie bands of the 1990's. The experienced genius of Spyros Faros who seeks for new ideas by means of minimal experimentation transforms this mini LP to a greatly-crafted masterpiece. Nevertheless proving the band's name at the same time. "The Wonderful Weaver" "gets" the listener into its blackandwhite web, especially the introductory "Jolly Fat Fellow", the impressive "Spirit of the Night" and the bittersweet "Cheap Wine-Cheap Trip". Last but not least, check out the minimalistic white colour of the artwork which from then on became dominant in most Elfish releases. Happy listening then...

MAL: Compendium Maleficarum 1981, Physiocrat Productions

Σιγά σιγά καθώς ο χειμώνας πλησιάζει αρεσκόμαστε στο να προτιμάμε τα πιο σκοτεινά ηχοχρώματα, πιο παγερές και μινιμαλιστικές μουσικές. Από χειμώνα σε χειμώνα λοιπόν αφηνόμαστε σε μουσικές που αποτυπώνουν όσο καλύτερα μπορούν τον θνητό κόσμο, το ανθρώπινο σκοτάδι, εξερευνώντας το ώσπου καταφτάνουν οι πρώτες ηλιαχτίδες της άνοιξης ή του καλοκαιριού. Μέχρι τότε φτάνουμε κοντά, πάρα πολύ κοντά στο να δούμε την αληθινή αντανάκλαση του εαυτού μας σαν όνειρο ή σαν εφιάλτη. Ο δίσκος που παρουσιάζουμε σήμερα μας φέρνει επίσης κοντά σε αυτή την εμπειρία, με παγερή μινιμαλιστική απλότητα. Από τις πρώτες νότες του "Compendium Maleficarum" και το "Murder In Paradise" κατανοούμε πως κάτι απόκοσμο αλλά ταυτόχρονα γνώριμο λαμβάνει μέρος. Ο Martin Arthur Lucas ή αλλιώς MAL, δημιούργησε αυτό το ολοκληρωτικά μυστηριώδες δημιούργημα με λιτά μέσα, λιτές νότες και ενορχήστρωση και το παρέδωσε στον κόσμο το 1981 μέσα από το ολόδικό του label 'Physiocrat Productions'. Ένα προς ένα τα υπόλοιπα κομμάτια ξεδιπλώνουν το ίδιο σκοτεινό μοτίβο, "Student of Prague", "A Manual of Human Dissection", "Camera Obscura" με τη φωνή αλλά και τη μουσική του Lucas να λειτουργούν το ίδιο αποστασιοποιημένα, παγερά αλλά και ατμοσφαιρικά σε όλη τη διάρκεια του άλμπουμ. Ηλεκτρικοί-ηλεκτρονικοί ήχοι "δουλεύουν" στο βάθος, υπόκωφα samplers που απλά προσθέτουν μυστήριο στα τραγούδια. Ο ίδιος ο τίτλος του LP, "Compendium Maleficarum" παραπέμπει στο ομότιτλο εγχειρίδιο περί μαγισσών και δαιμονολογίας του Ιταλού Francesco Maria Guazzo και σε εποχές επίσης σκοτεινές όπου ο χειμώνας ήταν πνευματικός και κρατούσε χρόνια ολόκληρα ενώ άνθρωποι 'θυσιαζόντουσαν' για δήθεν σχέσεις τους με τον διάβολο. Όμως σήμερα αναγνωρίζουμε πως πέρα από την θρησκευτικό φανατισμό, ένα τέτοιο έργο είναι γεμάτο φαντασία και δη, μελαγχολική μέσα από το έρεβος της ανθρώπινης ψυχής. Έτσι μελαγχολική είναι και η μουσική του MAL, και ίσως υπερβολικά σοβαρή, παρολ' αυτά είναι αρκετά αποτελεσματική στο να μεταδίδει αυτή τη χειμερινή και σχεδόν υπερφυσική ατμόσφαιρα. Είναι οπωσδήποτε ένα άλμπουμ που θέλει προσοχή και όχι μόνο ένα άκουσμα. Πιστεύουμε πως θα αρέσει σε πολλούς το "Compendium Maleficarum" και ελπίζουμε πως θα το απολαύσετε ιδιαίτερα οι λάτρεις του πειραματικού και μίνιμαλ ήχου. Κατευθείαν (όπως και το προηγούμενο Camberwell Now: The Ghost Trade) από τη δισκοθήκη του φίλου μας The Unspeakable...

With the winter drawing nearer we are likely to prefer darker coloursounds, colder and more minimalistic music, too. Thus winter after winter we let ourselves go deeper into music that is able to depict our mortal world, our human darkness, and explore through it at the same time until the first reborn sunray arrives at Spring or Summertime. Until then we come closer to the true reflection of ourselves portrayed as a dream or a nightmare accordingly. The album we are presenting today also brings us closer to this experience, via a minimal icy plainness. Ever from the first tunes of "Compendium Maleficarum" and the stunning first track "Murder in Paradise" we realize that something familiar and eerie at the same time takes place. Martin Arthur Lucas, a.k.a. MAL created this absolutely mysterious album with thriftiness and austerity in terms of means and arrangement and then delivered it to the world in the year 1981 through his own label 'Physiocrat Productions'. The rest of the songs unfold within a similar dark motif, "Student of Prague", "A Manual of Human Dissection", "Camera Obscura" with MAL's voice and music as detached as the first opening song, in a chilling and atmospheric manner throughout the rest of the LP. Both electric and electronic sounds fill in the background and dull samplers add to the mystery of each crafted song.

In addition to the above, the title of the album refers to the 1608 compendium about witchcraft and demonology written by the Italian Fransesco Maria Guazzo. Those were dark times of humanity and a spiritual winter that lasted for decades and hundreds people were 'sacrificed'for allegedly being associated with the devil. Nevertheless, today we recognize that beyond religious extremities, such a literary work could as well become an inspiration. Perhaps a sad and melancholic one, however full of imagination that's coming alive from within the darkness of the soul.

MAL's music is indeed melancholic and perhaps too serious, however, it is most effective in conveying this icy and almost supernatural scenery. It is definitely an album that needs your attention - not just one listen. We believe that many will love "Compendium Maleficarum" and especially those whose attention is drawn by experimental and/or minimal sounds. Ας πάμε σε κάτι εντελώς διαφορετικό, κάτι εξαιρετικό. Όσοι γνωρίζουν την μουσική των Βρετανών This Heat πιθανώς γνωρίζουν και την "φυσική" συνεχειά τους που ήταν οι Camberwell Now. Οι δεύτεροι αποτελούν άξια συνέχεια, εξερεύνησαν παραπέρα μουσικές περιοχές. Η τύχη και η ύπαρξη των δύο συγκροτημάτων περνάει μέσα από τον κοινό παρονομαστή-ιδρυτή Charles Hayward (ντράμερ) στη μουσική του οποίου "συνδέεται" το παρελθόν της μουσικής παράδοσης του Camberwell αλλά και του κοντινού Canterbury, οι επιρροές από το kraut και progressive ροκ, αλλά και το πέρασμα στην ανανεωμένη μουσική της δεκαετίας του 80. Οι Camberwell Now ήταν λοιπόν ένα βραχύβιο σχήμα που κυκλοφόρησε μόνο 2 ep και ένα άλμπουμ, το μεγαλοπρεπές "The Ghost Trade" το οποίο και σας παρουσιάζουμε σήμερα.

Το "The Ghost Trade" από το πρώτο άκουσμά του ξαφνιάζει με την ενέργεια που περικλείει. Κανείς συνειδητοποιεί πως αυτό που ακούγεται είναι ουσιαστικά η μουσική του σήμερα πρωτοπαιγμένη σχεδόν 30 χρόνια πριν. Αν προσέξει κανείς τη φρενήρη rhythm section, τα επαναλαμβανόμενα samplers, tapes, ουσιαστικά θυμίζει ένα πολύ πρώιμο είδος trip-hop. Πρόκειται για μουσική γεμάτη από αστείρευτες φρέσκιες ιδέες και από μουσικούς που δεν φοβούνται να πειραματιστούν. Ο πειραματισμός είναι δεδομένος αν και πρόκειται για ένα απόλυτα βατό και κατανοητό άλμπουμ, και κάθε φορά που το ακούς μοιάζει καινούργιο. Αληθινά έξυπνα φτιαγμένη μουσική για αυτούς που πραγματικά την αναζητούν. Από άποψη ενορχήστρωσης-εκτέλεσης είναι επίσης τέλειο, καθώς κάθε ένα από τα 6 κομμάτια αυτού του δίσκου είναι δοσμένο με απίστευτη συνέπεια στην εντέλεια, πράγμα που κάνει το "The Ghost Trade" ένα απολαυστικό άκουσμα μέχρι το τέλος. Μην το χάσετε αυτό!!! Καλή ακρόαση!!!

Let's see something entirely different and extraordinary too. Those who are familiar with the music of the British act This Heat also know The Camberwell Now. The latter explored futher music realms in a wothy manner, they went further than This Heat did. For both groups there was this common denominator, the drummer Charles Hayward whose music connects the tradition of Camberwell (and Canterbury), influences from kraut and progressive rock and finally the coming of the renewed music of the 80s. If one can't imagine what all the above sound like, The Camberwell now is the answer. They were a short-lived act producing only two eps and one full LP, the great "The Ghost Trade" that we are presenting today.

"The Ghost Trade" is a surprising album, as it is full of energy. Another thing that you might realize just by listening to it is that it sounds like a fresh and quite modern piece of work, only that it was issued almost thirty years ago. Pay attention to the frenzy and punctual rhythm section, the repeatedly played samplers/tapes and one might recognize a primitive trip-hop sound. This is music full of fresh ideas by musicians that aren't afraid to experiment. In fact, experimentations is given. Nevertheless, this is a quite easy-to-handle album that sounds brand new everytime one listens to it. Truly brightly made music for those who seek for it. From arrangement point of view "The Ghost Trade" is a perfect and enjoyable LP all the way to the end. Don't miss this one!!! Enjoy listening to this one!!!

VA: The Fundamental Hymnal 1989, Fundamental Recordings

Οι 3-4 τελευταίες αναρτήσεις μας αφορούσαν συλλογές γνωριμίας με κάποιες ανεξάρτητες δισκογραφικές εταιρείες. Έτσι και αυτή η ανάρτηση δεν θα αποτελέσει έκπληξη αφού θα ασχοληθούμε με μία από τις πιο αντιπροσωπευτικές δισκογραφικές στην άλλη πλευρά του Ατλαντικού Ωκεανού, την Fundamental και πιο συγκεκριμένα την συλλογή με τίτλο "The Fundamental Hymnal" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1989 και περιέχει την αφρόκρεμα των συγκροτημάτων της. Η Fundamental έχει δώσει αρκετά δείγματα γραφής. Ας μην ξεχνάμε πως και οι πρωτοπόροι του αμερικάνικου post punk και πολύ αγαπημένοι στην Ελλάδα Savage Republic είναι ένα από τα συγκροτήματά της και οπωσδήποτε συμμετέχουν στην συλλογή. Επίσης συμμετέχουν και οι επίσης γνωστοί Shiva Burlesque, Naked Prey και Butthole Surfers, αλλά και οι λιγότερο γνωστοί Shock Therapy, Sylvia Juncosa και Eugene Chadbourne. Οι δε περισσότεροι από αυτούς σε indie-post punk-garage punk ύφος. Από την άλλη σε κάτι ιδιαίτερο, οι Drowning Pool με τις φαινομενικά-ατέλειωτες σπειροειδείς ηχομορφές δίνουν ένα ατμοσφαιρικό και ταυτόχρονα μελαγχολικό τόνο. Τέλος, κλείνοντας το δίσκο, οι "σύγχρονοι σαμάνοι" Red Temple Spirits που ακροβατούν μεταξύ new wave και progressive rock αναζητήσεων, κλείνουν την πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα αυτή συλλογή.

ENG: The last 3-4 posts were about compilations that help us get to know some alternative labels. This post will be no surprise since we are going to talk about one of the most representative labels across the Atlantic Ocean and that is Fundamental. The compilation's title is "The Fundamental Hymnal" and was released in 1989, compiling the elite of the label's catalogue. Fudamental is a label that has brought great bands to light. Let's not forget that the pioneers of the u.s. post punk Savage Republic are also one of the distinctive groups of Fundamental and they appear in this compilation too. The "Fundamental Hymnal" is also comprised of some well known groups; Shiva Burlesque, Naked Prey and Butthole Surfers and some less known ones; Shock Therapy, Sylvia Juncosa και Eugene Chadbourne, most of the above in indie-post punk-garage punk styles. In addition, there is a special treat, an unreleased song by the Drowning Pool whose seemingly-endless spiraling soundforms are distinctive of their excellent moody atmospherics. Finally, Red Temple Spirits end this interesting compilation, like "modern shamans" exploring new wavish prog rock and vice versa. Hope you like it!! Enjoy!!

VA: 4AD Dark Paths 1982, WEA Greece

Η επιρροή της ανεξάρτητης δισκογραφικής 4AD στην σημερινή ανεξάρτητη rock (και όχι μόνο) μουσική σκηνή είναι αδιαμφισβήτητη. Μέσα από τον μεγάλο κατάλογο της αναδείχθηκε πλήθος καλλιτεχνών και συγκροτημάτων με δύο κύρια χαρακτηριστικά: πρώτον, την υψηλή ποιότητα έκφρασης τόσο σε μουσικό αλλά και σε εικαστικό επίπεδο, και δεύτερον τον πρωτοποριακό συχνά ατμοσφαιρικό και ονειρικό ήχο που έγινε "σήμα κατατεθέν".

Στην Ελλάδα γνωρίσαμε την 4AD κυρίως μέσα από ελάχιστες ραδιοφωνικές εκπομπές και παρουσιάσεις δίσκων στα λίγα μουσικά περιοδικά (Ήχος, Ποπ+Ροκ), Επίσης σημαντική υπήρξε και η κυκλοφορία της συλλογής που παρουσιάζουμε σήμερα και έχει τον "διαφωτιστικό" τίτλο "Dark Paths". Ως μία κυκλοφορία μοναδική για την εποχή της αποτέλεσε το sampler-πυξίδα των μουσικά ανήσυχων, αφού αποτύπωσε επιτυχημένα περισσότερες από τις φαινομενικά διαφορετικές μουσικές τάσεις της 4AD.

Επίσης η μοναδικότητα της "Dark Paths" έγκειται και στο γεγονός πως κυκλοφόρησε το 1982 μόνο στην Ελλάδα από την WEA (η οποία τότε πρέπει να διένειμε το υλικό της 4AD). Περιέχει 13 τραγούδια από 7 συγκροτήματα: Οι Bauhaus, Rema-Rema, Modern English, Colin Newman, Dance Chapter συμμετέχουν με δύο κομμάτια, ενώ οι Mass μόνο με ένα. Επιπλέον, συμμετέχει ο David Jay (Bauhaus) με δύο κομμάτια από την καταπληκτική συνεργασία του με τον ποιητή Rene Halkett - ο ίδιος ο ποιητής απαγγέλει. Τέλος, να επισημάνουμε πως στα δύο κομμάτια των Dance Chapter έχει γίνει λάθος στους τίτλους, δηλαδή το 'Demolished Sanctuary' είναι στην πραγματικότητα το 'She' και το 'Backwards Across Thresholds' λέγεται 'Attitudes'.

Φανταζόμαστε πως οι περισσότεροι έχετε ήδη γνωρίσει την 4AD. Πιστεύουμε πως η συλλογή αυτή, αν και δεν προσφέρει κάτι καινούργιο, οπωσδήποτε δίνει μια πιο "φρέσκια' εντύπωση.

The fact that independent label 4AD influenced modern independent rock music (and not only) is undisputed. Throughout its entire long catalogue emerged a multitude of artists and groups with at least two common features. First of all, there was a higher quality of expression in both musical and artistic fields (sleeve art and presentation). Secondly, there is the avantgard-ish atmospheric and dreamy sound that became 4AD's trademark over the years. Greece got to know about 4AD mostly through a few radio shows and record presentations in a couple music magazines (Sound, Pop+Rock). Also equally important was the release of the record we present today which has the "enlightening" title "Dark Paths". This was a unique release at the time came to be a guiding sampler for those who favoured this music genre, since it depicted successfully most of the diverse trends the label expressed.

This compilation is also unique because it was released solely in Greece in 1982 through the label WEA (probably a distributor for 4AD material at the time). "Dark Paths" contains 13 songs from 7 bands-artists: Bauhaus, Rema-Rema, Modern English, Colin Newman, Dance Chapter participate with two songs each, whereas Mass have only one song. In addition, there are two songs taken from the collaboration of David Jay (Bauhaus) and the poet Rene Halkett who actually recites the poems! Closing, let's also note that the two Dance Chapter titles were mispelled and the actual titles are 'She' instead of 'Demolished Sanctuary' and 'Attitudes' instead of 'Backwards Across Thresholds'.

Most probably most of our readers already know about 4AD and what it represented back in the 1980's. Perhaps this compilation doesn't serve as a new thing, but definitely gives a "fresher" impression.
