VA: Red Flame... a Compilation circa 1984, Virgin-Red Flame-Ink Records

Αυτή τη φορά σας έχουμε ετοιμάσει μια συλλογή η οποία κυκλοφόρησε μόνο στην Ελλάδα περίπου το 1983 ή το 1984 από την Virgin και η οποία περιέχει συμμετοχές των ανεξάρτητων δισκογραφικών Red Flame και Ink Records με συγκροτήματα κυρίως από Μεγάλη Βρετανία και ένα από την Αυστραλία (Severed Heads). Ας πάρουμε ως αφετηρία την πρώτη πλευρά του δίσκου, δηλαδή τα κομμάτια 1-6, βλέπουμε πως κινούνται στο χώρο του κιθαριστικού new wave (Moodists, Decorators) αλλά και με funk στοιχεία (C Cat Trance από μέλη των Medium Medium) και σκοτεινό ηλεκτρονικό ήχο (David Harrow, γνωστός από τη συνεργασία του με την Anne Clark). Στην δεύτερη πλευρά (7-12) αφού ακούσουμε τους ηλεκτρονικούς Severed Heads και τους πειραματικούς Artery, μετά το τοπίο αλλάζει σε πιο jazzy-pop στυλ (Shiny Two Shiny, Cynthia Scott) αλλά και ethnic (Kabbala).
Τυπικός ο διαχωρισμός των στυλ ανά πλευρά την δεκαετία του 80, προσπαθώντας να συμπεριλάβει διάφορα ανομοιογενή είδη. Ελπίζουμε πως γενικά θα σας αρέσει η συλλογή αυτή, έστω και με τόση ποικιλία. Βέβαια ένας ακόμα λόγος που βρίσκεται εδώ κυρίως είναι για... εκθεσιακούς σκοπούς - αν και δεν πρόκειται για συλλεκτικό κομμάτι, αλλά επειδή την δεκαετία του 80 ήταν ελάχιστες οι συλλογές που κυκλοφορούσαν στην Ελλάδα. Η συγκεκριμένη μπορούμε να πούμε πως ήταν από τις πλέον αξιόλογες.

ENG: This time we have a compilation prepared. It was only released in Greece circa 1984 by Virgin Records and contained groups mainly from the U.K. and one from Australia (Severed Heads). Let's take a closer look on the first side of the record (songs 1-6). The reason why we do that is because side one is much different than side two in terms of style. So οn the first side some groups belong to the guitar oriented new wave style (Moodists, Decorators), others are more funk-oriented (C Cat Trance, once members of Medium Medium), as well as darker new wave tunes (David Harrow, also known from his collaboration with Anne Clark). On side two the musicscape is different as it begins qith somehow electronic-oriented new wave (Severed Heads) and experimental sounds (Artery). From then on it is totally different, as Shiny Two Shiny and Cynthia Scott give a much more poppish-jazzy colour and the compilation endswith an ethnic tune from Kabbala.

This was quite typical in the 80's, to mix different music styles in result to contain more heterogeneous genres in one compilation. We hope that you will like the compilation as a whole, even though it is musically diverse. However the reason we post it is also exhibitional, even though it isn't about a collector's item, those kind of compilations were rare in Greece in the 1980's. However, this particular one was one of the most notable.

De Div: Stap Voor Stap e.p. 1981 plus Open Zee mini LP 1984 both Plexus Holland Records

Συνεχίζουμε τις καλοκαιρινές μουσικές αναζητήσεις-αναρτήσεις μας με τους De Div, ένα new wave συγκρότημα από την Ολλανδία με χαρακτηριστικό ήχο και μέλωδίες τόσο φρέσκιες σαν να πρόκειται για σύγχρονη μπάντα. Επιπρόσθετα, έχουν την ωραία επιμονή να ντύνουν τη μουσική τους με στίχους στη δική τους γλώσσα (Ολλανδικά) ίσως αδιαφορώντας για την φήμη και την επιτυχία έξω από τα γεωγραφικά όρια των Κάτω Χωρών. Όλα τα παραπάνω αναδεικνύουν τους De Div ως ξεχωριστούς και κάνουν τη μουσική τους διακρίσιμη, και πλέον σχεδόν 30 χρόνια μετά αρκετά νοσταλγική. Στην πρώτη τους κυκλοφορία του 1981 το πρώτο e.p. με τίτλο "Stap Voor Stap" ("Βήμα προς Βήμα") και τους απλούς μεν αλλά και σύνθετους ρυθμούς των καλοδουλεμένων τραγουδιών (τα οποία στην εποχή τους ίσως ήταν και χορευτικά hit), συμμετέχει στην παραγωγή ο Dirk Polak των Mecano. Οι De Div αποδεικνύονται ένα πολύ δεμένο σχήμα και γι αυτό η μουσική τους είναι ατόφια και τόσο χαρακτηριστικά αβίαστη, με την rhythm section από τη μία να χτίζει αποφασιστικά τα τραγούδια και τις ωραίες ερασιτεχνικές μεν, αριστοτεχνικές δε, κιθάρες από την άλλη, να "δουλεύουν" στην λεπτομέρεια. Δεν μπορέσαμε να ξεχωρίσουμε ως καλύτερο κανένα από τα 4 τραγούδια αυτού του πρώτου τους e.p. γιατί πολύ απλά πρόκειται για ένα καταπληκτικό ντεμπούτο.

Επιπλέον, αναρτούμε και την τέταρτη κυκλοφορία τους, το μίνι-LP "Open Zee" ("Ανοιχτή Θάλασσα") του 1984, που στέκεται μερικά σκαλιά πιο πάνω από το ντεμπούτο "Stap Voor Stap", κυρίως από άποψη ωριμότητας. Στο "Open Zee" λοιπόν, ο ήχος είναι πιο "ηλεκτρικός" και ορμητικός, εστιασμένος στην κιθάρα, χωρίς βέβαια να χάνει καθόλου σε δύναμη η χαρακτηριστική rhythm section. Ακόμα και τα φωνητικά στο "Open Zee" ακούγονται πιο παθιασμένα σε σχέση με τα συγκρατημένα φωνητικά του πρώτου e.p. Δεν προσπαθούμε να συγκρίνουμε τις δύο κυκλοφορίες γιατί αντιπροσωπεύουν διαφορετικές χρονικές περιόδους, άλλωστε μεταξύ τους έχουν μεσολαβήσει και άλλες, αλλά οπωσδήποτε είναι εμφανής η ωρίμανση του συγκροτήματος, στα μεταβατικά στάδια προς την ακμή, ή ακόμα και προς την φθορά.

Πιστεύουμε πως θα σας αρέσουν αρκετά οι De Div, ιδιαίτερα όσοι δεν τους γνωρίζατε από πριν. Όπως πάντα, περιμένουμε τα σχόλιά σας και την γνώμη σας. Και οι δύο κυκλοφορίες σε ένα αρχείο ΕΔΩ.

ENG: We continue our summertime posts/quests with De Div, a new wave group from Holland with characteristic sound features, as fresh as if they were modern. They insisted in using Dutch lyrics and perhaps this may have been an obstacle concerning their fame outside the borders of The Netherlands. All the above imply that they are a special kind of group with distinctive music, yet it becomes somehow nostalgic 30 years later... The e.p. "Stap Voor Stap" is their ever first release pulsating with simple yet complex rhythms (may have been quite danceable at that time). A great figure of the Dutch new wave, Dirk Polak of Mecano is on production as well. All in all, De Div prove to be a well bound group, their music comes solid and characteristically unconstrained; the songs are mainly built on the rhythm section, the guitars no matter how amateurish, they are well played, "knitting" in detail. Overall, it is a great debut e.p., all 4 songs are equally outstanding.

Additionally, we present their fourth release as well, the 1984 mini LP entitled "Open Zee", where De Div seem to move forward and become more mature. At the same time, their music seems to be more impulsive and electrified, focusing on the guitar play, yet the distinct rhythm section is still there, solid. Even the vocals are more passionate in the "Open Zee" mini LP, compared to the restrained vocals of the first e.p. Of course, we cannot compare those two releases since they are not time-contiguous. However the group's maturation is quite apparent in "Open Zee", no matter where the next releases got them to, either prime or decay.

We strongly believe that De Div will become one of your favourites, especially to those who never heard of this band before.

The Mirrorshades: Updated!!!

Ζητούμε συγγνώμη από όσους κατέβασαν το ντέμο των Mirrorshades, γιατί υπήρχε ένα λάθος στην αντιστοίχιση δύο τραγουδιών. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, το "Time" ήταν στη θέση του "Give Me A Chance to Change" από λάθος βέβαια και όχι σκόπιμα. Για όσους λοιπόν πήραν το ντέμο ώς την Κυριακή 5 Ιουνίου, κάντε τον κόπο απλά να αλλάξετε τα ονόματα-τίτλους των 2 τραγουδιών. Δηλαδή το "Time" είναι ουσιαστικά το "Give Me A Chance...". Για όσους το κατεβάζουν από σήμερα και μετά, η σειρά είναι σωστή. Και πάλι συγγνώμη για τον κόπο αλλά που και που συμβαίνουν και αυτά.


ENG: We apologize to those who downloaded the Mirrorshades demo tape until yesterday Sunday June 5. Apparently, 2 of the songs were repectively mistitled!!! Specifically, "Time" was in the the place of "Give Me A Chance to Change" by mistake and of course, not intentionally. So, all you friends have to do is just rename the two songs respectively (song #3 is "Give Me A Chance..." and song#4 is "Time". Sorry for getting you into this minor trouble, but these things happen. For the rest who are interested in getting the file from now on, the link is updated with the correct song order.

The Mirrorshades: Demo Tape, 1991 (Self-released)

Σήμερα θα ασχοληθούμε με κάτι που το επεξεργαζόμαστε από καιρό, παράλληλα μαζεύοντας και το κατάλληλο υλικό, έτσι ώστε η ανάρτηση αυτή να είναι όσο το δυνατόν γίνεται πιο ολοκληρωμένη. Μιλάμε για τους Mirrorshades, ένα συγκρότημα τα μέλη του οποίου γνωρίζαμε από κοντά - ήταν συγγενείς, φίλοι, συμμαθητές, τους ακολουθήσαμε και σε κάποιες ζωντανές εμφανίσεις και κάποια στιγμή ήρθε στα χέρια μας και η κασέτα τους εν έτει 1991 με 5 τραγούδια. Οπότε φίλοι και φίλες των "10.000 ματιών", καταλαβαίνετε πως αφ' ενός πρόκειται για κάτι μοναδικό, δυσεύρετο και γενικά δύσκολο για οποιονδήποτε να τους θυμάται να παίζουν, εκτός αν βέβαια έχει στα χέρια του αυτό το ντέμο. Η παρέα των φίλων που απάρτιζε το συγκρότημα ήταν: Μπάμπης Γούλας (lead guitar+vocals), Στράτος Aρχοντίτσης: (rythm guitar) (ο οποίος ήταν και ο πιο δεμένος με το συγκρότημα και που έφυγε απ' τη ζωή σε ατύχημα με μηχανή το 1996), Σταμάτης Δαδιώτης (bass guitar), Σοφοκλής Δαδιώτης (drums). Επιπλέον, συμμετείχαν σε κάποια κομμάτια στο live οι: Αλέξης Γεωργίου (secondary vocals) και ο Δημήτρης Γούλας (saxophone και keyboards). Για το live που αναφέρθηκε πιο πάνω, υπάρχει ντοκουμέντο το οποίο ηχογράφησα (σ.σ. Psychopomp) το καλοκαίρι του 1992 και θα το ανεβάσουμε εν καιρώ. Περιέχει κάποια από τα κομμάτια του ντέμο, κάποια νεότερα κομμάτια τους που δεν ηχογραφήθηκαν σε studio και πλείστες διασκευές σε κομμάτια των Sex Pistols, Joy Division, The Cure, Green on Red, U2, Pink Floyd, δηλαδή από ό,τι σχεδόν άγγιζε και επηρρέασε μουσικά τις ψυχές των Mirrorshades.

Όσον αφορά την υπόλοιπη δραστηριότητα του συγκροτήματος, πέραν της κασέτας, που υπενθυμίζουμε μοιράστηκε-αντιγράφηκε μεταξύ φίλων, έγιναν κάποιες ζωντανές εμφανίσεις και σε φεστιβάλ. Πάντως αυτό που θυμόμαστε από τις ζωντανές τους εμφανίσεις, ήταν η ενέργεια η οποία είχαν και έβγαζαν προς τα έξω, αλλά και η αγάπη προς τη μουσική που έγραφαν. Το ντέμο είναι σε σχετικά καλή ποιότητα, αν και οι κασετο-εγγραφές όπως θα θυμούνται οι παλιότεροι δεν ήταν και ό,τι καλύτερο από θέμα ηχητικής τελειότητας. Μουσικά οι Mirrorshades κυμαίνονται σε κιθαριστικού τύπου new wave με αρκετές αναφορές στους Smiths, Felt, The Cure (της εποχής των 2 πρώτων LP). Η έμφαση είναι στις κιθάρες και γι αυτό και οι αναφορές σε παγκόσμιας φήμης συγκροτήματα που ο ήχος τους είναι κυρίως κιθαριστικός. Το τελευταίο κομμάτι του ντέμο είναι μια διασκευή στο "10:15 Saturday Night" των Cure. Στα υπόλοιπα κομμάτια αποτυπώνονται ωραίες ιδέες και ενδιαφέρουσες ευκολομνημόνευτες μελωδίες. Προφανώς είχαν πολλά ακόμα να προσφέρουν, αλλά στην πραγματικότητα εκείνη την εποχή ήταν δύσκολο να διατηρεί κανείς μουσικό σχήμα. Κάποια στιγμή, είναι οι σπουδές, ο στρατός και άλλες υποχρεώσεις που γίνονται προτεραιότητες με την μουσική να έρχεται σε δεύτερη, ακόμα και σε τελευταία μοίρα. Πάντως ήταν τόσο αξιόλογη παρέα με όρεξη και θα είχε πραγματικά πολύ ενδιαφέρον να βλέπαμε την συνέχεια. Ευχαριστούμε το Μπάμπη Γούλα που μας παρείχε τις λεπτομέρειες σχετικά με τα ονόματα των μελών, αλλά και τα poster από τα live. Ελπίζουμε πως θα σας αρέσει η μουσική τους.

The Mirrorshades: Demo tape, 1991 (self released)

Today's post is something special that we've been working upon for a long time now, trying to gather all the material and the information for a complete post. This is about the Mirrorshades, whose group members we used to know, as they were friends, relatives, schoolmates. We followed them to a few live appearances, and sometime we found out about the 1991 demo tape containing 5 songs. So friends of the "10.000 eyes" blog, we suppose that you understand that this is unique and hard to find demo tape, from a band that only a few might remember, unless they obtain this tape. The company of friends called the Mirrorshades were: Babis Goulas (lead giotar+vocals), Stratos Archontitsis (rhythm guitar) - he was closer to the group in an emotional way - unfortunately, he had a deadly motorcycle accident in 1996 - Stamatis Dadiotis (bass guitar), Sofoklis Dadiotis (drums). Additionally, Alexis Georgiou (secondary vocals) and Dimitris Goulas (saxophone+keyboards) aided in some live appearances too. One of those aforementioned live appearances was bootlegged by the Psychopomp, back in the summer of 1992 and eventually we will upload it for you. This recording contains some of the songs included in the demo tape, some newer ones and many covers of songs from Sex Pistols, Joy Division, The Cure, Green on Red, U2, Pink Floyd, as those were the musical influences of the group at that time.
Generally, the Mirrorshades apart from recording this demo tape in 1991 (which was actually given away among friends), had a lot of live appearances including some festivals. What we recall from their performances is that they were energetic and showed great love for the music they produced. The demo is in a relatively good condition, regardless of the fact that home taping at that time wasn't of any great quality. In the music department now, the Mirrorshades were a new wave band guitar-oriented, clearly influenced by the Smiths, Felt and The Cure (first two LP's era). The emphasis is in the use of guitar and that is why we refer to the previous well-known groups. The fifth track of the demo is a Cure cover, the "10:15 Saturday Night". As for the rest of the tracks, some interesting ideas are raised and elaborated up to a point, making tunes easy to remember. Apparently, they had more to offer, but it must've been difficult to keep up with the needs of a rock group. At some point there's studies, army service, family and other obligations that become priorities. However they were a notable group of friends and it'd have been interesting to see what would happen, musically speaking.

VA: Something About Joy Division, Vox Pop 1990

Για τους περισσότερους που τους αρέσει η post punk, new/dark wave και παρεμφερή μουσικά είδη, ο μήνας Μάϊος είναι γνωστός για την αυτοκτονία του Ian Curtis (15/08/1956 – 18/05/1980), την ηγετική φιγούρα των Joy Division, ενός από τα πιο επιδραστικά συγκροτήματα της μετα-πάνκ περιόδου, από την δεκαετία του 80 και μέχρι σήμερα. Αποφασίσαμε λοιπόν και μείς σε ανάμνηση της μουσικής των Joy Division - επειδή ως γνωστόν με το τέλος του Ian Curtis ήρθε και το τέλος των Joy Division - να ανεβάσουμε ένα μάλλον άγνωστο άλμπουμ με διασκευές, ένα αφιέρωμα στον Curtis και τους J.D. με τίτλο "Something About Joy Division". Από την γειτονική μας Ιταλία, 12 συγκροτήματα που μουσικά φαίνονται πως ανήκουν περισσότερο στον new wave ήχο, σαφώς ελαφρύτερο από αυτόν των J.D. καταθέτουν την άποψή τους πάνω σε 12 αντίστοιχα γνωστά τραγούδια. Αυτό ακριβώς είναι που κάνει αυτό το Tribute ενδιαφέρον, η διαφορετική άποψη και όχι απαραίτητα η πιστή εκτέλεση σε τραγούδια που για πολλούς από εμάς είναι κλασικά, απαραίτητα και λίγο πολύ τα θεωρούμε ως ακρογωνιαίους λίθους της μουσικής αυτής. Aκούγοντας την πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα ακουστική εκτέλεση του "Atrocity Exhibition" από τους Subterranean Dining Rooms, ή τους The Carnival of Fools που διασκευάζουν το "Love Will Tear Us Apart" ή τους Allison Run στο "Ceremony", μπορούμε να δούμε ίσως και μια διαφορετική πλευρά στα τόσο αγαπημένα μας τραγούδια. Ακούστε το και κρίνετέ το ανάλογα.

ENG: For most people into post punk, new/dark wave music and the familiar genres the month of May is known for the suicide of Ian Curtis (15/08/1956 – 18/05/1980), singer and leader of Joy Division, one of the most influential groups of the post punk period through the 1980's and up to today. Unfortunately, the suicide of Ian Curtis was inevitably the death of J.D. as well. So in memory of their music we decided to post a rather unknown tribute to Joy Division and Ian Curtis entitled "Something About Joy Division". Twelve new wave bands from Italy not quite in the same vein as J.D's music offer their point of view upon certain well-known Joy Division songs. That exactly is what makes this tribute so interesting, because it is not about 'faithful' versions of these songs, that most of us love and consider them to be classic, elementary, more or less cornerstones of this kind of music. When listening to a most interesting version of "Atrocity Exhibition" by the Subterranean Dining Rooms, or The Carnival of Fools covering "Love Will Tear us Apart", or even Allison Run on "Ceremony", then we can see a somewhat different side to those beloved songs. Listen to it and jugde for yourselves.

Michael Gira: I Am Not Insane, 20 drawings plus Swans: I Am the Sun 7''

Σήμερα δεν θα ασχοληθούμε ευθέως με μουσική, αλλά με μια διαφορετικού είδους δημιουργία ενός από τους μουσικούς που αγαπάμε. Προκειται για 20 σκίτσα-ζωγραφιές του Michael Gira (Circus Mort, Swans, World of Skin, Angels of Light). Ο M. Gira είναι από τους πιο επιδραστικούς μουσικούς των Η.Π.Α. όσον αφορά την ανεξάρτητη σκηνή. Η έντονη προσωπικότητά του και το βάθος της καλλιτεχνικής ευφυΐας που τον κάνουν να ξεχωρίζει κυρίως για τη δουλειά του με τους Swans, αποτυπώνονται και εδώ σε 20 ζωγραφιές με τίτλο "I am not Insane" που κυκλοφόρησαν το 2009. Οι ζωγραφιές αυτές συνοδεύονται και από χαρακτηριστικές ρήσεις του Gira, όπως "Love is a completely natural force, like the wind or the tides of the sea". Τα scans είναι προσφορά του φίλου psyauto, τον οποίο και ευχαριστούμε, που είχε την ευγένεια να μας κάνει γνωστή τη δουλειά του M. Gira, αλλά και να τα παραχωρήσει ώστε να τα δείξουμε μέσα από το blog μας. Τελευταία στιγμή, προσθέσαμε και μουσική μαζί με τις ζωγραφιές, ένα 7-αράκι των Swans, το "I am the Sun" του 1996, ζωντανά ηχογραφημένο. Διπλό κέρασμα λοιπόν, εικόνες μετά μουσικής.

ENG: Today we will not deal so much with music, but with a different creation of one of our favourite artists. This is about 20 drawings by Michael Gira (Circus Mort, Swans, World of Skin, Angels of Light). Michael Gira is one of the most influential musicians in the U.S., mostly in the independent scene. His intense personality and the depth of artistic genious that are obvious in his work with Swans, are also dominant here in the 20 drawings entitled "I am not Insane" and published in 2009. Every drawing has a characteristic Michael Gira quote, such as "Love is a completely natural force, like the wind or the tides of the sea". The scans are offered by our friend psyauto, whom we thank for being so kind to let us know about Gira's work. At the very last moment as we write these words we decided to add music too...Swans' 7inch "I am the Sun" live recording back from 1996. A double treat of both, sound and vision.

The Greek Part of the Australian Underground: Lemon Avenue, The Straw Men, The Moffs

Φίλοι και φίλες, πολλές υποχρεώσεις κυρίως επαγγελματικής φύσης μας έχουν αναγκάσει να απέχουμε για λίγο καιρό από συχνές αναρτήσεις. Ελπίζουμε πως αυτό θα αλλάξει σύντομα.

Σε αυτή την μακροσκελή και φιλόδοξη ανάρτηση θα ασχοληθούμε με 3 συγκροτήματα από την Αυστραλία, αυτή την μακρινή (γεωγραφικά) αλλά τόσο κοντινή χώρα (μουσικά). Αυτά τα συγκροτήματα δεν είναι ιδιαίτερα διάσημα παγκοσμίως, αλλά οπωσδήποτε αξίζουν να αναφερθούν και φυσικά να ακουστούν μέσα από το blog μας. Κοινό χαρακτηριστικό είναι πως και στα 3 από αυτά συμμετέχουν Αυστραλοί καλλιτέχνες, Ελληνικής καταγωγής, οπότε η σχέση τους με την Ελλάδα είναι άμεση. Δεν κρύβεται κάποια εθνικιστική προτροπή πίσω από αυτή την ανάρτηση, παρά μόνο η τάση μας για ενημέρωση, διαφωτισμό και να μοιραστούμε τη μουσική.

1. Lemon Avenue: Love and Necromancy (Left As In Sinister, 1991)

Ξεκινάμε με τους Lemon Avenue, ένα ιδιότυπο gothic rock σχήμα με αρκετά στοιχεία folk και psychedelia στον ήχο του. Αναφερόμαστε στην μοναδική τους μεγάλη κυκλοφορία με τον μυστικιστικό τίτλο "Love and Necromancy" του 1991, στην ανεξάρτητη δισκογραφική με το επίσης παράξενο όνομα Left Αs Ιn Sinister (LAIS), δημιουργός της οποίας είναι το μέλος των Lemon Avenue, Αυστραλός Ελληνικής καταγωγής, Valerios Calocerinos (μπάσο).Είναι δύσκολο να περιγράψει κανείς επακριβώς τη μουσική των Lemon Avenue. Το "Love and Necromancy" είναι ένας λαμπρός δίσκος, ένα έργο διάχυτο από εμπνεύσεις και επιρροές, και μέσα από αυτές οπωσδήποτε διαφαίνεται η αναγνωρίσιμη πλέον σφραγίδα του συγκροτήματος. Υπάρχουν κομμάτια που διακατέχονται απο μια σκοτεινή gothic διάθεση όπως τα "Cancer Come Cancer" και "Over and Over" (από τα καλύτερα κομμάτια του δίσκου), ενώ άλλα βρίσκονται σε μια πιο αιθέρια/ακουστική έως και ψυχεδελική φλέβα, ο συνδυασμός και των δύο επιρροών κάνει τη μουσική τους να έχει ελαφρώς μια υποχθόνια και μυστηριακή διάσταση. Είναι χαρακτηριστική η συνέντευξη του V.C. στο blog του φίλου tribe4mian και την οποία αξίζει να διαβάσετε γιατί είναι άκρως διαφωτιστική σχετικά με την ανεξάρτητη σκηνή της Αυστραλίας και όχι μόνο. Μεταξύ των άλλων ο Β.Κ. αναφέρει σχετικά με τη μουσική των L.A. και τη σχέση της με το εξώφυλλο του "Love and Necromancy" (από πίνακα του Ιερώνυμου Μπος), πως η μουσική κατεύθυνση του συγκροτήματος μοιάζει πολυεπίπεδη (και πολυδιάστατη) όπως ακριβώς είναι αυτός ο πίνακας, άλλωστε αυτός είναι και ο λόγος που επιλέχθηκε για εξώφυλλο. Μνημονεύεται και αφιερώνεται ο δίσκος στον Ιερώνυμο Μπος (αλλά και στους Marc Bolan και Kahlil Gibran). Ας σημειωθεί τέλος, πως η παραγωγή είναι του επίσης Ελληνο-Αυστραλού Tom Kazas από το νεο-ψυχεδελικό σχήμα The Moffs. Το "Love and Necromancy" πιστεύουμε πως αξίζει πραγματικά να ακουστεί κυρίως από φίλους/ες που αναζητούν διαφορετικά ακούσματα. Σας ενθαρρύνουμε να το ακούσετε φυσικά.

ENG: Friends of this blog, there have been several obligations of professional nature that slowed us down a bit from posting our favourite music. We hope that this will change soon.

In the following long and ambitious post we will deal with 3 groups from Australia, this distant (in geographic terms) and at the same time so close (in terms of music). This is about three not so popular groups in a worldwide scale, but we believe that they should have a chance through our blog. Common characteristic is that in all three of them, there are Australian artists, of Greek origin. Therefore, these groups and their music (and they are not the only ones) are directly related to Greece. This post has nothing to do with cultivating nationalistic ideas, nothing else but our urge to inform, enlighten and share music with other people.

First group in the row of three is Lemon Avenue, a peculiar gothic rock formation with a few folk and psychededelic elements. We refer mainly to their one and only LP with the mystic title "Love and Necromancy" released in 1991 under the oddly named label Left as in Sinister (LAIS). Founder of LAIS Records is Valerios Calocerinos, also founder of Lemon Avenue. It is kinda hard to describe in detail the facts in the music of Lemon Avenue, they don't actually belong to a specific genre. "Love and Necromancy" LP is a brilliant record, a project full of inspiration and influence, through which surfaces the trademark music of the group. There are songs of dark gothic mood, with edgy guitars and fast tempo such as the great "Cancer Come Cancer" and "Over and Over", there also ethereal/folkish as well as psychedelic songs. Needless to say that the combination of both makes their music much more sacramental and underground-like. One may find quite interesting an interview of Valerios Calocerinos in tribe4mian's blog because he somehow enlightens the obscurity of Lemon Avenue, as he mentions that their music is multileveled and multidimensional just like the front cover of the LP (taken from a painting by Hieronymous Bosch, the famous middle ages painter). Bosch's name as well as Marc Bolan's and Kahlil Gibran's names are mentioned in the back cover. Closing the Lemon Avenue part, let us note that "Love and Necromancy" was produced with the aid of another Australian musician of Greek origin named Tom Kazas, founder of The Moffs, a distinctive neo-psychedelic Australian group (we will cover them later on). Nevertheless, "Love and Necromancy" is an album that most of you will like - especially those who like atmospheric, yet ambivalent music - we encourage you, of course.



2. The Straw Men: Inland Sea (Strawmen, 1988)
Οι Straw Men από το Sydney είναι επίσης άλλο ένα συγκρότημα που απαρτιζόταν από Έλληνο-Αυστραλούς μουσικούς. Το στυλ τους είναι κιθαριστικό new wave, πιο κοντά στο ύφος των Crime and the City Solution, Porcelain Bus, These Immortal Souls, Beasts of Burbon, Died Pretty, Sacred Cowboys. Εδώ παρουσιάζουμε τον δεύτερο δίσκο των Straw Men του 1988, με τίτλο "Inland Sea". Σύμφωνα και με τη σημείωση που υπάρχει στη σελίδα τους στο myspace, οι Straw Men ήταν πολυμελές συγκρότημα, ίσως μια μεγάλη παρέα φίλων που τους άρεσε να παίζουν μαζί μουσική και να γράφουν τραγούδια. Ανάμεσά τους υπήρχαν και Ελληνικής καταγωγής μουσικοί, ο ντράμερ Nick Nickolaidis (πέθανε το 1991) ο οποίος παίζει σε κάποια κομμάτια του δίσκου, επίσης οι Chris Shakallis και Yianni Manu (σε άλλες εποχές). Ελπίζουμε πως τα στοιχεία είναι σωστά, από τη στιγμή που είναι δύσκολο να βρεί κάποιος πληροφορίες σχετικά με το αξιόλογο αυτό new wave συγκρότημα. Οι δίσκοι τους είναι σε δική τους παραγωγή, διανομή και κυκλοφορία, πράγμα που τους διατήρησε σε underground αναγνωρισιμότητα. Ας πούμε και κάτι για τη μουσική τους όμως η οποία είναι γεμάτη και αρκετά ώριμη. Χαρακτηριστικές δυνατές ντράμς και τραχιές γραμμές μπάσου που δένουν άψογα με τα βραχνά φωνητικά (που παραπέμπουν στις μπάντες που προαναφέραμε), όμως και το αριστοτεχνικό παίξιμο της κιθάρας ανεβάζει τη μουσική τους ένα επίπεδο πιο πάνω και την κάνει ακόμη πιο ενδιαφέρουσα. Σίγουρα ένα συγκρότημα που αξίζει να το ψάξει κανείς.

ENG: Second group in this peculiar tribute is Straw Men from Sydney, also comprised of Australian Greek musicians. Their style is mainly new wave, near the sounds of Crime and the City Solution, Porcelain Bus, These Immortal Souls, Beasts of Burbon, Died Pretty, Sacred Cowboys and so on. This is their second LP entitled "Inland Sea" released in 1988. According to the (very few information on the internet) note on their myspace page, the Straw Men were a full member group, perhaps a large company of friends and colleagues who liked to play and write music together. Among the members of the Straw Men there were Australian-Greek musicians such as Nick Nickolaidis the drummer (took part in making "Inland Sea") who died in 1991, see pictures of him on myspace site (maybe no longer available). There were also Chris Shakallis and Yianni Manu (from other time-periods). Hoping that the clues are correct, since we had a hard time finding almost anything about this remarkable new wave band. As a band they were involved with all aspects of their own music, recording, producing, and releasing their own material, thus staying in the underground scene.
Le us note a few things about their music too, which is full and quite mature and that shows that they must've been a well tied group of friends. Characteristics were loud drums and distinctively rough bass lines well combined with throaty vocals. All of the above stemmed by a masterful guitar play finally adds to the music of the Straw Men and elevates them from the underground new wave formation they appear to be into a fully mature and interesting rock music group. They are certainly worth of listening to their music, as well as any effort in seeking their material.



3. The Moffs: Same titled mini-LP (Citadel Records, 1986)
Οι Moffs είναι το τελευταίο από τα τρία συγκροτήματα του αφιερώματός μας στην Ελληνική συμμετοχή της Αυστραλέζικης underground rock σκηνής, και ίσως είναι το πιο γνωστό από όλα κυρίως λόγω της σχετικά μεγάλης δισκογραφίας του (δύο δίσκοι, τρία 7ιντσα singles και μερικές συλλογές). Από τα ιδρυτικά και σημαντικά μέλη των Moffs είναι ο Tom Kazas - τον συναντήσαμε πιο πάνω στην παραγωγή του "Love and Necromancy" των Lemon Avenue, που είναι μία από τις πολλές παραγωγές που έχει κάνει - είναι σημαντική προσωπικότητα στην εκεί ανεξάρτητη σκηνή. Οι Moffs λοιπόν είναι ένα νεο-ψυχεδελικό σχήμα με new wave αλλά και progressive rock επιρροές (King Crimson, Pink Floyd, κ.α.), το σύνολο των παραπάνω είναι ξεκάθαρο σε όποιον ακούσει τον δίσκο που παρουσιάζουμε σήμερα, το ομότιτλο mini LP "The Moffs" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1986 από την Citadel Records. Πρόκειται ουσιαστικά για ένα πραγματικά κατασταλαγμένο, άρτιο, επικό και μεγαλοπρεπές άλμπουμ, γεμάτο έμπνευση και φαντασία, μέσο ικανό να ταξιδέψει τον ακροατή. Ο τίτλος ενός από τα 5 κομμάτια που περιέχει "I'll Lure you In" τα λέει όλα, γιατί είναι ένας δίσκος που σε μαγεύει και σε παρασύρει στην όμορφη δίνη του, η μουσική του είναι γεμάτη εικόνες, περιπετειώδη μουσικά περάσματα, αλλά και αρκετή μελαγχολία. Παρά την μελαγχολική διάθεση όμως, υπάρχει μια παγανιστική αισιοδοξία και μια διαχρονικότητα καθώς κανείς κοιτάζει την φωτογραφία που υπάρχει στο εσώφυλλο, όπου το συγκρότημα φαίνεται καθισμένο σε ένα αρχαίο πέτρινο κτίσμα που μοιάζει με φρυκτωρία ή απομεινάρι αρχαίου ναού. Από την αρχή έως και το τελευταίο κομμάτι, το πολύπλοκο και 12-λεπτο "The Meadowsong" αποδεικνύεται πως είναι ένας δίσκος που προσφέρει ομορφιά και μεγαλειότητα. Απολαύστε τον.

ENG: The Moffs are the last of the 3 groups of our small tribute to the Greek part of the Australian underground rock scene, and perhaps they are the most known of the 3, mainly because of relatively extended discography (two LPs, three 7-inch singles and a few compilations). Australian-Greek, Tom Kazas is the co-founder of the Moffs, and perhaps one of the most important figures in the Australian underground scene, since he has been quite busy making music, producing music and making films too (among all he produced Lemon Avenue's "Love and Necromancy" too).
Now regarding the Moffs and their music, they are actually a neo-spychedelic group with new wave and progressive rock influences (King Crimson, Pink Floyd, etc). All the above are balanced and evenly combined into making this excellent same titled mini LP (released by Citadel Records in 1986). It is actually a fully developed, epic, grand album, full of inspiration and fantasy, a vehicle οn which the listener can travel with. One of the songs entitled "I'll Lure you In" speaks for the whole album, as it is additionally enchanting, drifting the mind into its whirl, depicting musical images, adventurous melodic passages and melancholy. Besides that melancholic mood, there is a somehow pagan optimism and timelessness, epecially when one sees the inner sleeve photo of the group, sitting upon some ancient building, that resembles the remains of a watchtower or an ancient temple. Even to the final song, the multilayered 12-min epic "The Meadowsong" this mini LP proves all the grandeur and the beauty. Enjoy!!

Three 12'' eps/mlps for the end of March 2011 (Neon Judgement, The Passion of A Primitif, Hula)

1. Neon Judgement: Cockerill Sombre 12'' (Anything But Records, 1983)

Οι Neon Judgement από την μικρή πόλη Leuven του Βελγίου, πρωτοπόροι σε dark wave, ebm, επιθετικούς industrial ρυθμούς και σκοτεινές μελωδίες φτιαγμένες από ψυχρά synthesizer και drum-machine, αλλά και τα ιδιοφυή μυαλά του συγκροτήματος. Επιρροές κυρίως από Suicide, Cabaret Voltaire, Wire. Αν και πέρασαν αρκετές μεταμορφώσεις, και η αλήθεια είναι πως τα κλισέ δεν τους ταίριαζαν ποτέ, με τη διάρκεια των ετών έχουν πειραματιστεί πάνω σε πολλές φόρμες της "βιομηχανικής", και όχι μόνο, μουσικής. Εδώ έχουμε το πρώτο τους 12'' από το 1983 στο οποίο ήδη διαφαίνεται η πρωτοπόρα ορμή τους. Ανάμεσα στα 4 κομμάτια, σίγουρα αυτό που θα σας τραβήξει την προσοχή είναι το παγερό "Too Cold to Breathe", όχι πως τα υπόλοιπα πάνε πίσω από έμπνευση και δύναμη. Αναλόγως τη διάθεση λοιπόν...

ENG: Neon Judgement come from a Belgian smalltown called Leuven. They are pioneers of dark wave, ebm, aggressive industrial rythms and obscure tunes born out of cold synths and drum machines, as well as the geniouses of the band. They were mainly influenced by Suicide, Cabaret Voltaire and Wire. Even though they have transformed and evolved along the years, they never matched with cliches because they constantly experimented with their sound on the terms of more than one music genre. Here is their first 12'' from 1983, where one can feel the primal urge of inspiration, constituted of 4 songs. The chilling "Too Cold to Breathe" will draw your attention at once. The rest are quite powerful, depending on the mood....

2. The Passion of A Primitif: Songs from the Ant-Hill 12'' mLP (Antler, 1987)

Επίσης συγκρότημα με καταγωγή τις Κάτω Χώρες και συγκεκριμένα το Βέλγιο. Οι Passion of A Primitif ήταν δημιούργημα του Herman Gillis, ενός πολυτάλαντου, παραγωγικού και ιδιοφυούς μουσικού ο οποίος ασχολήθηκε και με τη σύνθεση συμβατικών new wave κομματιών, αλλά αργότερα πειραματίστηκε και με πιο ηλεκτρονικούς ήχους. Η μετέπειτα πορεία του περιλαμβάνει μεταξύ των άλλων τους Company of State, τους Poesie Noire (στους οποίους ακόμα συμμετέχει). Από τις λίγες πληροφορίες που κυκλοφορούν στο διαδίκτυο, φαίνεται πως το "Songs from the Ant-Hill" πρέπει να είναι η πρώτη δισκογραφική δουλειά στην οποία συμμετέχει. Είναι ένα mini-LP με δυνατές new wave/post punk συνθέσεις με πολύ καλή rhythm secction, καλές κιθάρες και με στοιχεία πειραματισμού. Δώστε του την ευκαιρία...

ENG: This is also a group that comes from Belgium. The Passion of A Primitif were a creation of Herman Gillis, a multi-talented, productive and ingenious musician, who produced merely conventional new wave music in the beginning, but later he devoted himself to electronics. Later on he worked with Company of State and Poesie Noire (until the present). Few information coming from the internet tell us that "Songs from the Ant-Hill" 12'' mini-LP must be his first released work. This is a powerful 12'', all new wave/post punk music with great rhythm section and nice guitars, even with some elements of experimentation. Give it a chance...

3. Hula: Black Pop Workout (Red Rhino, 1982)

Οι Hula έρχονται από Sheffield της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας και είναι ένα επίσης πρωτοπόρο σχήμα στην new wave και industrial σκηνή. Με επιρροές και συναναστροφές από Cabaret Voltaire, μέχρι They Must be Russians και Clock DVA, αυτό το πρώτο 12'' δεν θα μπορούσε να περάσει απαρατήρητο. Με τον ωραίο τίτλο "Black Pop Workout" έδωσαν το έναυσμα στην δισκογραφική τους πορεία που συνεχίστηκε για ακόμα 10 χρόνια, κατά τη διάρκεια των οποίων άλλαξαν σε πιο χορευτικές και σύνθετες φόρμες αλλά και σε pop και funky στοιχεία. Το "Black Pop Workout" είναι πολύ διαφορετικό σχεδόν από ο,τιδήποτε άλλο έχουν κάνει, καθώς πρόκειται για ένα "ωμό" σκοτεινό αριστούργημα, όπου πίσω από τον βασικό new/dark wave μουσικό σκελετό, διαφαίνεται η διάθεση να πάει η μουσική τους ένα βήμα πιο πέρα. Τα παρανοϊκά φωνητικά και οι καταιγιστικές drums προσθέτουν στην ατμόσφαιρα που διαχέεται μέσα από τα αυλάκια του "Feeding the Animal" αλλά και των άλλων μικρών διαμαντιών. Μάλλον θα το λατρέψετε...

Associated and influenced by The Cabaret Voltaire, They Must be Russians and Clock DVA, thus this first 12'' of 1982 could not be unnoticed. Entitled "Black Pop Workout" marks the beginning of a 10-year discography. During this period they evolved and changed constantly by adding danceable or complex industrial forms in their style as well as pop or funky aspects. "Black Pop Workout" stands out because it is a dark, 'raw' masterpiece where one can see potential behind the music. Paranoid vocals and tempestuous drumming add to the diffusing atmosphere of the first track "Feeding the Animal" and the rest of the songs that follow its lead. We believe that you will love it...

Film Noir: Portrait of the Child, 1990 Aural Art

Η σημερινή ανάρτηση αφορά τη δεύτερη και τελευταία κυκλοφορία των Film Noir, από τους οποίους είχαμε παρουσιάσει παλιότερα το πρώτο τους mini-LP "Never Ending Dream" (1986). Εδώ στην -ουσιαστικά- πρώτη τους μεγάλη κυκλοφορία (1990) με τίτλο "Portrait of the Child", δεν συμμετέχει η Μαριέλα Λουκάκη, η οποία έδωσε και το cult στίγμα στο "Never Ending Dream" του 1986, με αποτέλεσμα μουσικά οι Film Noir του 1990 να είναι ένα τελείως διαφορετικό συγκρότημα. Χωρίς να γνωρίζουμε τι άλλο μεσολάβησε εκτός από την αποχώρηση (το 1987) της Μαριέλας Λουκάκη έως το 1990, παρολ' αυτά υποθέτουμε πως το συγκρότημα μπήκε σε κάποια φάση πειραματισμού και εξερεύνησης άλλων ακουσμάτων. Το αποτέλεσμα που αποτυπώνεται σε αυτόν το δίσκο δεν είναι κακό, είναι απλά διαφορετικό και πολύ ενδιαφέρον.

Η μουσική του "Portrait..." βρίσκεται μεταξύ μιας ελαφριάς jazz διάθεσης και τεχνοτροπίας α-λά David Sylvian (Japan) στο ύφος των προσωπικών του άλμπουμ ("Secrets of the Beehive", κ.α.), με πλήρως ατμοσφαιρικές, μελαγχολικές και μινιμαλιστικές μουσικές φράσεις, με διάθεση κυριολεκτικά "film noir", σαν από soundtrack ταινίας που δεν έχει γυριστεί ακόμα. Επίσης η επιρροή του (μακαρίτη) Mick Karn (Japan, Dali's Car) είναι εμφανής (ειδικά στο "Behind the Scenes").

Όπου υπάρχουν φωνητικά, αυτά είναι ανδρικά και δίνουν περισσότερη έμφαση στην ήρεμη αλλά και ταυτόχρονα πειραματική απόδραση του "Portrait of the Child". Ας μην ξεχάσουμε να αναφέρουμε πως η κυκλοφορία αυτή διαθέτει ένα πανέμορφο εξώφυλλο, από αυτά που τραβούν ιδιαίτερα την προσοχή. Αξιοσημείωτο ίσως είναι το γεγονός πως κυκλοφόρησε στην νεότευκτη ανεξάρτητη εταιρεία Aural Art η οποία είχε σχετικά pop προσανατολισμό, όπως επίσης και άλλο ένα μουσικό project που σχετίζεται με τους εναπομείναντες Film Noir και είχε την ονομασία Aural Posse. Film Noir: Portrait of the Child, 1990 Aural Art

Today's post is about the second and last release from Film Noir (the legendary new wave group from Greece) whose first mini LP "Never Ending Dream" (1986) we presented some time ago. Here we deal with their 1990 LP "Portrait of the Child", where Mariella Loukaki is no longer member of the group (if you recall her distinctly passionate vocal work in the essential "Never Ending Dream"). Since we don't really know what occurred between 1987 (Loukaki left the group) and 1990, we suppose that the rest of the group entered a period of experimentation and exploration of various listenings. The result in this LP is different and interesting, however, not bad at all.

The music style in the "Portrait of the Child" LP is something among light jazz moods and David Sylvian-like musical forms (Sylvian's personal releases e.g. "Secrets of the Beehive"), with fully atmospheric, melancholic and minimal music phrases, literally film noir music as if making a soundtrack for an unrecorded film. The influence by (the late) Mick Karn (Japan, Dali's Car) is obvious too.

Moreover, male vocals emphasize in the calm and experimental escapism of "Portrait...". Let us not forget to mention that this LP has a most beautiful front cover photo, it is one of those that really draw attention. Also notable is that the "Portrait of a Child" LP as well as Aural Posse's 12inch "Deputy of Love" (a project also related to Film Noir) were both released under the independent label "Aural Art" of pop-ish orientation. Σήμερα επιστρέφουμε σε μια από τις αγαπημένες μας ελληνικές δισκογραφικές, φιλοδοξώντας να φέρουμε στο φως ό,τι διαθέτουμε από τον πλέον δυσεύρετο κατάλογό της. Αν και η παραπάνω εισαγωγή θα μπορούσε να ισχύει για οποιαδήποτε από τις ελληνικές ανεξάρτητες δισκογραφικές εταιρείες (Enigma, Creep, Wipe Out, Happening κτλ), ο λόγος γίνεται για την Elfish Records που αν και πιο πρόσφατη σε σχέση με τις προαναφερόμενες, έχει να επιδείξει εξίσου αρκετό και ποιοτικό μουσικό υλικό.

Έτσι λοιπόν σειρά έχουν οι Nesfindonimus από τις Σέρρες, το project του onemanband John Dark StoneJohn (Γιάννης Πετρακογιάννης), το οποίο είναι οπωδήποτε ένα μείγμα ηλεκτρονικού μουσικού πειραματισμού, μεταξύ minimal synth, dark ambient, αλλά ακόμα και στοιχείων κλασικής και μπαρόκ μουσικής. Το "Strip Code 030370" του 1992 είναι συνολικά ένα D.I.Y. αριστούργημα που ηχογραφήθηκε αρχικά σε στούντιο στις Σέρρες και η επεξεργασία του έγινε στην Αθήνα από τον αξιόλογο και πολυτάλαντο Coti K. (Film Noir, Dada Data, Raw, κ.α.). Το LP αυτό είναι γεμάτο σκοτεινά ηχοτοπία, samples που ταξιδεύουν τον ακροατή μέσα από διαφορετικές εκφάνσεις της ανθρώπινης υπόστασης. Είχαμε ξαναδεί τους Nesfindonimus και στη συλλογή "Random Relations 2" του 1992 με το τραγούδι "Suzanne" που κινείται στο ίδιο ύφος. Όλα τα κομμάτια του δίσκου αυτού είναι είναι αξιόλογα και όσο περισσότερο τα ακούει κανείς θα ξεχωρίζει κάθε φορά ένα διαφορετικό τραγούδι ως αγαπημένο. Όμως... πως να μην εκφράσει κανείς το θαυμασμό του για κομμάτια όπως το "X-Day" (βασισμένο σε θέμα του Klaus Schulze), ή το "Lament" με την επαναλαμβανόμενη μελωδία της οποίας το κρεσέντο καταλήγει σε samples από ψαλμωδίες Ελληνορθόδοξης κηδείας (μακάβριο μεν, έξυπνο δε). Από την άλλη, πιο ηλεκτρονικά κομμάτια όπως το πολλά υποσχόμενο που ανοίγει το δίσκο "Drive my Heart" με τα πανέμορφα αιθέρια γυναικεία φωνητικά, ή το ομώνυμο kinky "Strip Code 030370" ή και ακόμα τα μινιμαλιστικά synth "Dance of Life","All the Stars" και "Password" έχουν μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον. Το "Silent Run" που κλείνει το LP μέσα σε φοβερή ατμόσφαιρα μένει αξέχαστο, δίνοντας την εντύπωση πως δεν άκουσες απλά ένα δίσκο, αλλά ένα soundtrack για το μυστήριο, το πάθος και το μαρτύριο της ανθρώπινης ύπαρξης. Today we return with one of our most favourite Greek Alternative labels, since we have the ambition to bring to light whatever we can out of its hard-to-find catalogue. This could apply to the case of any Greek Alternative label (Enigma, Creep, Wipe Out, etc), here however we mention Elfish Records which may be one of the most recent ones, yet one of rich and quality material.

Thus we bring up a group called Nesfindonimus from Serres (an area in Macedonia, Northern Greece) which is a one-man-band project of John Dark StoneJohn (Giannis Petrakogiannis), musically a mixture of electronic experimentation among minimal synth, dark ambient and even classical and baroque elements. "Strip Code 030370" LP of 1992 is altogether a D.I.Y. masterpiece principally recorded in Serres and eventually been worked in Athens by the remarkable and multitalented Coti K. (Film Noir, Dada Data, Raw, etc). The music of the LP introduces the listener into dark soundscapes and sound samples through various manifestations and aspects of human estate. We had met Nesfindonimus in the "Random Relations 2" Elfish Collection of 1992 with the song "Suzanne" similar to the style of the LP. Each and every song is remarkable, and becoming more with every additional listening and attention. Take our word for it, each time there will have a new favourite one!! How one should not express an admiration about such music: "X-Day" (based on a theme by Klaus Schulze), or "Lament" with the repeated spiral-like theme which climaxes into a sample of chants taken by a Greek-Orthodox funeral (macabre, yet quite clever). Moreover, there are electronically upbeat oriented pieces such as the promising opening song "Drive my Heart" including beautiful ethereal female vocals, or the same-titled kinky "Strip Code 030370". Furthermore, the minimal synth tracks "Dance of Life", "All the Stars" and "Password" are interesting as well. It is not easy to forget the closing track "Silent Run" because its strong atmosphere won't let it be forgotten, as it gives the impression that it is a soundtrack of the mystery, the passion and the agony of human existence. The Gathering: The Gathering mLP, 1986 Damaged Product Records

Σήμερα έχουμε τους Βρετανούς The Gathering και το ομώνυμο mLP τους από την -κατά πάσα πιθανότητα δική τους δισκογραφική- Damaged Product. Δυστυχώς δεν έχουμε βρεί τίποτα στο internet για το συγκρότημα αυτό, εκτός από την πληροφορία πως έχουν κυκλοφορήσει και ένα e.p. δύο χρόνια αργότερα με τίτλο "Rant" στην Final Records.

Μουσικά βρίσκονται σε new wave ύφος κάπου ανάμεσα στα στυλ των Cure, των Echo and the Bunnymen, και των Chameleons χωρίς όμως να ακούγονται σαν κανέναν τους. Χαρακτηριστικό του ήχου των Gathering είναι το πομπώδες αλλά μελαγχολικό παίξιμο της κιθάρας με τη βοήθεια του echo effect, που τους κάνει να ακούγονται σχεδόν goth, η δυνατή rhythm section, αλλά και τα πολύ καλά φωνητικά. Άγνωστο τι απέγιναν μετά το e.p. (το οποίο δυστυχώς δεν έχουμε να προσφέρουμε μαζί με το mLP), αλλά θα ήταν ίσως ενδιαφέρον να ακούγαμε κάτι από αυτούς, κάτι θα είχαν ακόμη να δώσουν. Το σχετικά δυσεύρετο mLP "The Gathering" είναι ένα μικρό διαμάντι, όπως και νάχει αντιπροσωπεύει μια καλή εποχή της Βρετανικής new wave σκηνής. Ελπίζουμε κάποιοι να το ψάχνατε... και άλλοι μόλις τώρα να το ανακαλύπτετε.

Today we bring to you the British new wavers The Gathering and their same titled mini-LP released through -perhaps their own label- Damaged Product. Unfortunately there isn't much on the Internet about them, except that they have also released an e.p. two years later entitled "Rant", through Final Records.

Their musical style is new wave between the likes of The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, and The Chameleons, but they don't sound like any of the above. Their sound is characteristic, because of their pompous (almost gothic) but melancholic echoeffect-driven guitar, their strong and firm rhythm section, as well as the great vocals. Don't know whatever happened to them after the release of "Rant" e.p., nevertheless it would be quite interesting to have a clue of later works. However this hard-to-find miniLP is a small jewel as it comes from Britain's finest new wave period. We hope some of you might be already looking for "The Gathering".... and others discovering it just now.

Miners Of Muzo: In Surf Of Fish mLP, 1984 Eksakt Records

Στο σημερινό post έχουμε τους Miners of Muzo από την Ολλανδία και την πρώτη τους κυκλοφορία με τίτλο "In Surf of Fish". Οι Miners of Muzo είναι ένα συγκρότημα περισσότερο οικείο και αγαπημένο στους οπαδούς της garage ή garage punk μουσικής (που και εμείς απολαμβάνουμε που και που), μάλιστα από τα καλύτερα του είδους. Αυτό όμως δεν φαίνεται πως ίσχυε πάντα γιατί σε αυτή την πρώτη τους κυκλοφορία, αυτό το (σχετικά δυσεύρετο) mini LP του 1984 περιέχει εκτός από τα ψήγματα της μετέπειτα garage punk πορείας τους, μερικά από τα πιο "δυνατά" post punk κομμάτια που έχουμε ακούσει. Η ροπή προς το garage punk είναι εμφανής, αλλά οι οπαδοί της post punk μουσικής σίγουρα θα ξεχωρίσουν τα "Love & Laughter", "Make Me A Puppet", "Days of Drums" για την φλέβα της αλά Birthday Party παράνοιας που ρέει ανάμεσα τους. Το "In Surf of Fish" κυκλοφόρησε από την Ολλανδική ανεξάρτητη δισκογραφική Eksakt Records η οποία φιλοξένησε πολλά ονόματα της ανεξάρτητης σκηνής όπως Mick Ness, Exploiting the Prophets, και LUL. Ανεξάρτητα ποιό είναι το δικό σας μουσικό στυλ, garage punk, post punk, gothic, είμαστε βέβαιοι πως θα απολαύσετε τους Miners of Muzo στην πρώτη τους δισκογραφική δουλειά.

In today's post we present the Miners of Muzo from Holland and their first release entitled "In Surf of Fish". The fans of garage/garage punk music are more familiar with them, as they are considered to be one of the best and beloved Dutch groups of the genre.

However, as it seems from this (hard to find) fist mini LP dated back in 1984, they have not always been a purely devoted garage punk group; this mini release proves the garage punk elements co-existing with some of the most powerful post punk songs we ever heard. Their tendency towards garage punk is obvious in their music, but post punk fans will surely recognize among "Love & Laughter", "Make Me A Puppet" and "Days of Drums" Birthday Party's vein of paranoia. "In Surf of Fish" was released through Eksakt Records, an independent Dutch label, home of other independent artists such as Mick Ness, Exploiting the Prophets, and LUL.

Regardless of what your music style is (garage, post punk, gothic), we are certain that you will enjoy the fist release of the Miners.
